For at least the past 200 years or so, there's been a lot of debate about women and the role we're supposed to play in society. Historically, we've been expected to be the nurturers, the caregivers—the gentler sex, as we used to be called. We cook the food, we nurse the sick, we mind the children. Some of us are perfectly content in that role. But all throughout history, there have also been women who've chafed against these expectations. Some of them rebelled in a healthy, heroic way—fighting for women's right to vote, to manage our own money, to pursue careers. And some have rebelled in a darker, more toxic way, using the very tools of stereotypical womanhood—food and drink—to commit the deadliest crimes. Today we'll tell you about two of those women. Case 1: Tillie Klimek. Case 2: The Marquise de Brinvilliers.Join Katie and Whitney, plus the hosts of Last Podcast on the Left, Sinisterhood, and Scared to Death, on the very first CRIMEWAVE true crime cruise! So in the 17th Century, in Rome, Giulia Tofana led a group of women who made devotional oils, cosmetic liquids and of course, poison. This poison was a famed untraceable and undetectable poison for it's time and it was dubbed Aqua Tofana. 4 doses they said, could put any man in his grave. It was a way for women, who could not get a divorce to get out of some very bad situations and over 20 years, these women claimed to have killed over 600 men, We discuss the poison, the time, the place and famous folks who felt they were victims of this strange brew. We also talk bodily autonomy, the trend 'Make Aqua Tofana Great Again', Dandy's World, The Princess Bride, (Princess Buttercup has entered the chat), iocaine powder and just plain being decent to one another in this, wait, they REALLY did that episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

After a brief hiatus we are back ! We ventured to the 1600's this week. Marie wanted to have her cake and eat it too and when her father put a stop to this she launched an extensive revenge plot. This is the Story of Marie Madeline The Marquise De Brinvilliers .

Sorcerer and fortune-teller Catherine "La Voisin" Monvoisin was sentenced to death on 22nd February, 1680. She had supplied poisons and potions to clients including Madame de Montespan, official mistress to King Louis XIV. Monvoisin's punishment was the climax of the witchcraft hysteria that rocked the Parisian court, triggered by the confessions of Madame de Brinvilliers, who'd been executed for conspiring to poison her father. The scandal became known as ‘The Affair of the Poisons'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how a ‘black mass' actually worked; ponder how it was such a seemingly small jump from chiromancy to murder in Voisin's backstreet clinics; and consider what La Voisin's career would look like if she was around these days… Further Reading: • ‘La Voisin and the Scandalous Affair of the Poisons' (SciHi, 2019): http://scihi.org/affair-poisons-voisin/ • ‘The Bizarre Life Of The Murderous French Fortuneteller La Voisin' (Grunge, 2020): https://www.grunge.com/246131/the-bizarre-life-of-the-murderous-french-fortuneteller-la-voisin/ • ‘The Terror of History: The Witch Hunt in Early Modern Europe' (UCLA, 2007): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOQND4fVF_w #1600s #Witchcraft #France #Macabre Love the show? On a hot humid Parisian July day, the aristocratic Marie, Marquise de Brinvilliers was carted out to the scaffold before a seething crowd. Marie was accused of poisoning over 50 people, including her own father and brothers. The massive crowd on July 17, 1676, had come to witness a common entertainment, an execution. Marie de Brinvilliers has run the gambit of public opinion, from femme fatale to hapless victim to hysterical woman to feminist icon. There may be partial truth in all these, but the real Marie never got to tell her own story, the legacy we have today has come to us through a tortured confession and journalistic flair. Today about 85% of all serial killers are male. On the rare occasions when a woman commits murder, it is far more shocking to society. But history reveals a handful of femme fatals who took the lives of others to gain power or even for their own sadistic pleasure. Royal and noble women were particularly well positioned to indulge their evil impulses. Wealth and power gave them nearly limitless freedom to prey on peasants, who in turn had little means of seeking justice. Today we'll investigate the cases of 5 female aristocratic serial murderers from history: Anula, Queen of Anuradhapura, ? – 44 BCE Elizabeth Báthory, Hungarian Countess 1560 – 1614 Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer, “La Quintrala”, Spanish & Chilean Noblewoman 1604 – 1665 Marie-Madeleine d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers 1630 – 1676 Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, 1755–1762 Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! The Man in the Iron Mask - Alexandre Dumas - Book 6, Part 9 Title: The Man in the Iron Mask Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan. Dumas based the character and attributes of d'Artagnan on the captain of musketeers Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan (c. 1611–1673) and the portrayal was particularly indebted to d'Artagnan's semi-fictionalized memoirs as written 27 years after the hero's death by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (published 1700). The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later (French: Le Vicomte de Bragelonne ou Dix ans plus tard) is the third and last of The d'Artagnan Romances, following The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. It appeared first in serial form between 1847 and 1850. In the English translations, the 268 chapters of this large volume are usually subdivided into three, but sometimes four or even six individual books. In three-volume English editions, the volumes are entitled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Each volume is roughly the length of the original The Three Musketeers (1844). Set in the 1660s and concerned with the early reign of Louis XIV, the novel has been called an "origins" story of the King, "a tale about the education of a young man who went on to rule for over 70 years and become one of France's most beloved monarchs." Naturally, in a novel about Dumas' musketeers, the characters play an important role in Louis' education. The story of d'Artagnan is completed in Louise de la Vallière in the last of the Musketeer novels and the penultimate book in the set of d'Artagnan Romances novels. Louise de la Vallière - Alexandre Dumas - Book 5, Part 6 Title: Louise de la Vallière Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan. The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Louise de la Vallière. The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later - Alexandre Dumas - Book 4, Part 1 Title: The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan. Set in the 1660s and concerned with the early reign of Louis XIV, the novel has been called an "origins" story of the King, "a tale about the education of a young man who went on to rule for over 70 years and become one of France's most beloved monarchs." Twenty Years After - Alexandre Dumas - Book 3, Part 9 Title: Twenty Years After Overview: The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), telling the story of the 17th-century musketeer d'Artagnan. Twenty Years After (French: Vingt ans après) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, first serialized from January to August 1845. A book of The d'Artagnan Romances, it is a sequel to The Three Musketeers (1844) and precedes the 1847–1850 novel The Vicomte de Bragelonne (which includes the sub-plot Man in the Iron Mask). The novel follows events in France during the Fronde, during the childhood reign of Louis XIV, and in England near the end of the English Civil War, leading up to the victory of Oliver Cromwell and the execution of King Charles I. Through the words of the main characters, particularly Athos, Dumas comes out on the side of the monarchy in general, or at least the text often praises the idea of benevolent royalty. His musketeers are valiant and just in their efforts to protect young Louis XIV and the doomed Charles I from their attackers.
