Send us a textThis June, I sat down with bestselling author Tracey Enerson Wood to talk about her newest historical novel, Katharine, the Wright Sister: A Novel (2024). The book shines a spotlight on Katharine Wright, the often-overlooked sister of Wilbur and Orville Wright—whose contributions were vital to the invention and promotion of the airplane.Tracey and I talk about her path from registered nurse to novelist, her love of writing about “hidden women in history,” and her other works: The Engineer's Wife, The War Nurse, The President's Wife, Homefront Cooking, and Life Hacks for Military Spouses.Since recording this, I've begun work on my women in aviation history textbook—and Katharine  appears in Chapter One, in a sidebar about the hidden women who shaped early flight.Listen in for a lively, inspiring conversation about writing, research, and the women who changed history.Buy the book: Katharine, the Wright Sister#AviationHistory #WomenInAviation #BookClub #PodcastDid you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? The war rages. The newly launched WASP program is recruiting. And barnstormer fan Georgeanne “George” Ector's dream is to take to the skies. Grit is what she inherited from her mother, an Oklahoma farm girl at the turn of the century who preferred taking apart an engine to stitching linens for a hope chest. She taught her daughter well. George isn't the only woman about to follow her calling.Vivian Shaw, so similar to George they're like sisters, also longs for a career flying the fastest planes in the American arsenal. For a time, George and Vivian triumph. But at war's end, the adventurous women are grounded by the expectations of others: to get married, have children, and raise a family. Vivian has other plans. So, eventually, do George's daughters, Ruth and Ivy, who embark on very different paths of their own.Three generations of women staring down a vast horizon of possibilities are determined to navigate whatever comes their way―from the hardships of war and home to love and loss, and to the fallout of a long-held secret that could change their lives forever.Did you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? In her novel, "The Pretender," Harkin elevates Simnel from the footnotes to an imagined history, filling in with fiction what written history might have left out. KMUW's Beth Golay talked to Harkin.

Ojai: Talk of the Town

We sit down with author Howard Smith to discuss his latest novel, "Viva Verdi & Violetta." This immersive historical tale dives deep into the life and struggles of Giuseppe Verdi, his muse Giuseppina Strepponi, and the revolutionary fervor of the Italian Risorgimento of the mid-19th century. Told through the watchful, and witty, mind of his close friend, a restaurateur and retired opera singer, the novel brings to life Verdi's rise as a composer, the artistic and political battles of 19th-century Italy, and the resistance against Austrian occupation. Smith takes us behind the curtain, revealing Verdi's encounters with freedom fighters like Garibaldi and the dramatic cultural shifts that shaped his operatic masterpieces. There's also a lot of about food and culture in this transformative time. Tune in for a captivating discussion on music, history, and the timeless power of storytelling!

On the podcast this week, Elizabeth Fremantle is interviewed about her historical novel Disobedient, which is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. She is in conversation with Sarah Meyrick. Natalie K. Watson has written this month's book club essay about Disobedient. Disobedient is an enthralling historical novel that retells the turbulent life of the great Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentileschi. As a young artist in Rome in the early 17th century, Artemisia outstrips her brothers and contemporary male artists in talent. Her initial struggle as a painter in a male-dominated society is nothing compared with the dramatic turn of events that occur when a handsome male tutor is employed by her father to teach her linear perspective. Her rage against the trauma that she experiences at the hands of her tutor and the way in which law and society then fail her is expressed through her art. The story centres on her motivation for creating the brutal painting Judith Slaying Holofernes — a critical point, at which her art takes a dark turn. Disobedient is published Penguin Books at £9.99 (Church Times Bookshop £8.99). https://chbookshop.hymnsam.co.uk/books/9781405952811/disobedient?vc=CT203 Sarah Meyrick is a novelist. Sorry, Captain Natraj! ” She just turned her face and replied without showing her full face and not reducing the irritation in her voice, both of them went near him knowing her father was getting down from the train. Station manager introduces himself as a gentle smile. No emotion on his face though. How much important vehicle is this Howrah mail. Won't you buy by fighting by looking at some good wooden boxes.. The hole cart.. Heavy rain from Naduvule Ongole station to Nellore.. Just flowing. If my box is like this, the other beds would be very bad. ” "Sorry sir! We are also trying. Good good passengers have sent the boxes to Europe as African.. Talked too much.. This is war season.. Order coming from Delhi before packing the existing vehicles.. ” "That is also right.. What will you do.. Which place.. Is it a magician? ” "Sir.. How did you find out sir. Yes, Mayavaram side is good.. ' "Snake's foot and snake.. Tanjavur man will put the truth about tuck tuck and break it.. Gotta be careful with him.. Hey plant.. The vehicle has been told to come to the Waltex road itself" Whether Natarajan's anger is valid to Kalyani or not, he knows that it will not happen to his uncle. He held his hand and made him sit in the cement seat. "Yes.. Let all this stuff get down.. Is Ganesha uncle inside?. When he gets down, he can take everything and get down. ” Kalyani deliberately interrupted. She called her name by pressure. "The plantation has changed a lot.. Let's go to Vizac.. All the collector and board chairman there honored us with beautiful bouquets of flowers.. Do you remember.. But your son-in-law doesn't have a bouquet of flowers.. Something else.. ” Natarajan looked at her again a little angry. But he realized in a moment that anger doesn't help and turned that look into begging. She showed beauty as different. Another voice heard from the train box to follow this fun. “Hey plant.. Are you looking good? ' Ganesan spotted near railway door.. Distance relationship between him and his uncle. Old man jumped down from the train door like a young bull folding his whore without diminishing excitement. Kalyani laughed with satisfaction after hearing the word Nattu. Even though her fake smile was bitter, the person who put a smile on his face nicely. Plant like this in front of everyone in the foreign world.. The question that when they are going to stop calling Bolt is what a question raises in his mind. But Kalyani never left him. https://youtu.be/mvXRHXJA7yU?feature=shared

Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. In our fifty-third episode, we cover the first proper Historical Novel™, Sir Walter Scott's extremely boring, Ren Faire-style medieval romp, Ivanhoe (1819). In this episode, Abby gets ghosted by her best friend and medieval scholar, Justine. Scott talks about nothing but clothing, pork, and boobs, and Daniel enjoys (?) all the invented names, the porn parody that would write itself, and all the tournaments which are really just medieval versions of Super Smash Bros.Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: 'The Ballad of Robin Hood'. On Weekend Edition Sunday, Perkins-Valdez told Ayesha Roscoe about her decision to tell this story from a nurse's perspective, the double-edged sword of birth control for Black women, and her goals on writing from real life.
