Cette histoire nous montre que l'on ne badine pas avec l'amour et que certaines liaisons peuvent s'avérer fatales. On découvre la Marquise de Merteuil. Pour se venger d'une ancienne infidélité, elle demande à son ancien amant le Vicomte de Valmont de déflorer avant son mariage la jeune Cécile de Volanges qui sort du couvent. Quant à Valmont, il s'est mis en tête de séduire Madame de Tourvel, une femme pieuse et mariée. Valmont va parvenir à ses fins.
