In 1980, Jane Fonda and her producing partner Bruce Gilbert, took a serious issue — women in the workforce not receiving equal pay — and made it into the accessible and smash-hit comedy “9 to 5.” Starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton, it became a pop culture hit.
British post-punk superstars Wire always seem to be ahead of their time, no matter what time they exist in. Returning guest Garry Messick (American Doom Podcast) brings us their twelfth studio album, 2011's mysteriously diverse, surprisingly melodic 'Red Barked Tree'. 34 years into their career at the time of its release, Colin Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey STILL manage to make quite a racket, and it's a beautiful racket indeed... RockerMike and Rob discuss the band Wire. Wire are an English rock band, formed in London in October 1976 by Colin Newman (vocals, guitar), Graham Lewis (bass, vocals), Bruce Gilbert (guitar) and Robert Grey (drums). They were originally associated with the punk rock scene, appearing on The Roxy London WC2 album, and were later central to the development of post-punk, while their debut album Pink Flag was influential for hardcore punk. Wire are considered a definitive art punk and post-punk band, due to their richly detailed and atmospheric sound and obscure lyrical themes. They steadily developed from an early noise rock style to a more complex, structured sound involving increased use of guitar effects and synthesizers (1978's Chairs Missing and 1979's 154). The band gained a reputation for experimenting with song arrangements throughout its career. http://pinkflag.com/ https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/wire-reflect-on-40-years-as-punks-ultimate-cult-band-128633/amp/ https://www.facebook.com/WIRE.pinkflag?__cmr=1&refsrc=deprecated&_rdr https://mobile.twitter.com/wirehq https://www.billboard.com/amp/articles/columns/rock/8462176/wire-interview-reissues Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #punkstyle #punk #punkrock #punkfashion #punkgirl #punkmusic #punkhair #rockmusic #rock #rockstar #rockandroll #tokyorocknroll #rocknrollchurch #rockhound --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support
Welcome to episode 8 of season 2 of The Lavender Menace, where your cohosts Sunny and Renaissance are finally in the same city, house, room! Our sunnaissance in St. Louis era has been documented extensively on @thelavenderpod on Twitter, our personal Twitters (@asunnybooknook & @rxnaissance), and Renaissance's Instagram @renaissancemarie, if you want to go check that out... anyways today we discuss Lorde's highly anticipated third album, Solar Power. As usual with music (re: our SOUR review episode), Renaissance is a hater and Sunny loves it. Then, we discuss a listener submitted hot take from Jules about the discourse going on with Twitter fighting about Hasan, a "socialist' internet streamer, buying a multimillion dollar house in Los Angelos, and consider the impossible future of this podcast blowing up and becoming rich. Basically, we are Hasan haters and Alexis @lexi4prez on Twitter stans. We watched Assassination Nation (2018) directed by Sam Levinson and have thoughts about the hypersexualization of teenage girlhood, American fascist violence, and the melodrama of cinema about high schoolers. Finally, for recommendations, Sunny recommends the translated book An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten, and Renaissance recommends the movie 9 to 5 (1980) directed by Bruce Gilbert. When Jane Fonda and her producing partner Bruce Gilbert brought Colin Higgins on to rewrite Patricia Resnick's workplace drama, they knew they were going to shift the story to a comedy instead. They also knew that Higgins would flesh out the three female protagonists at the core of the story. What they also got was an incredibly well-structured script that was full of wild humor while also keeping the characters honest and grounded. Considering these were features that Higgins consistently wrote into his scripts, it really didn't come as a surprise, but what did surprise everyone is how much audiences connected to this story. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Colin Higgins series with his 1980 comedy classic Nine to Five. We talk about how smart this script was for its time and how sadly relevant it is today still. We look at Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton and chat about how perfect they are as an on-screen trio. We look at the perfect Dabney Coleman as their nemesis and chat about the awful crimes he commits in the workplace, and how it's viewed through today's eyes. We discuss how Parton's title song became such an iconic anthem for a cultural movement at the time. And we look at elements in the film that we can point to that define Higgins' style of storytelling (not to mention his love for comedy tropes). It's an absolute comedy classic that everyone should see, so stop what you're doing, watch it, then tune in to this week's show. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. 9 to 5 (listed in the opening credits as Nine to Five) is a 1980 American comedy film produced by Bruce Gilbert, story by Patricia Resnick, screenplay by Resnick and Colin Higgins, and directed by Higgins. It stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with, and their overthrow of, the company's autocratic, "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss, played by Dabney Coleman. The film grossed over $103.9 million and is the 20th highest-grossing comedy film. As a star vehicle for Parton—already established as a successful singer, musician and songwriter—it launched her permanently into mainstream popular culture. A television series of the same name based on the film ran for five seasons, and a musical version of the film (also titled 9 to 5), with new songs written by Parton, opened on Broadway on April 30, 2009. 9 to 5 is number 74 on the American Film Institute's "100 Funniest Movies" and has an 82% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. We listened to Wire's, Pink Flag from 1977. An art school band to the core who got serious with punk and six months later they record this kind of genius. Everything mashed together, no hierarchy, constant reinvention, don't copy the Sex Pistols, create a new genre for christ sakes. Everyone else, give up. Stay glued to you TV set. Gren Wells is a badass -- whether rocking haute couture on the film-festival circuit, getting Hollywood's attention with a script about cancer (A Little Bit of Heaven starring Kate Hudson), or writing and directing last year's The Road Within with Robert Sheehan, Dev Patel, Zoe Kravitz, and Kyra Sedgwick. True to form, Gren doesn't disappoint in this episode, coming in hot and never taking her foot off the gas as we cuss, guzzle 19-year-old Barolo, and enjoy nuggets about her psychotic non-stop writing binges and how getting uncomfortably aggressive at a party with On Golden Pond producer Bruce Gilbert helped kickstart her career.
If one of the criteria for 'ambient' music is that you can comfortably fall asleep to it, I guess you'd better skip this particular mix. Although it starts quiet and reassuring with soothing vocal chords from Silvestrov's "The Lord's Prayer", the mood disintegrates and sometimes can become rather unsettling - depending on your own personal 'incidental memories', of course. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- For reasons I can't really explain, this mix works better if you listen on speakers instead of headphones - just let the airwaves flow for maximum immersion. "Autumn is here. Darkness slowly creeps up just a little bit earlier. Clouds get grayer and swell up with rain. Trees shed their colors and tighten their belts.
