One of the most breathtaking finches to keep in an aviary in Australia is the exquisite Purple Grenadier Finch (Uraeginthus ianthinogaster). Native to Africa, this stunning bird was last officially imported into Australia in the mid-1940s. From Investor to Climate-Tech VisionaryMarta Sjögren spent over a decade as a venture capitalist, but a desire to make a meaningful impact drove her to co-found Paebbl. “I wanted to look my kids in the eyes and say, ‘I did my part,'” she shares. Marta's transition into climate tech was fueled by her desire to use her expertise to scale transformative solutions, ultimately creating a company focused on turning CO2 into sustainable building materials.Scaling Sustainability with SciencePaebbl's groundbreaking technology chemically accelerates a natural process, turning CO2 gas into carbonate rock. As Marta explains, “We just chemically accelerate a process that has existed since the beginning of time.” By using biogenic sources of CO2 and combining them with crushed minerals, water, and non-toxic chemical accelerants, Paebbl is creating sustainable materials for the construction industry. This innovative process is a game-changer for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors like concrete production.Building a Diverse and Agile TeamWith a team of 45 people spanning 22 nationalities, Paebbl prioritizes diversity in skills and backgrounds. Marta notes that many employees come from industries like oil and gas, mining, and advanced materials, making the company a leader in green job transitions. “We're hiring for the future,” she says, highlighting the role of generative AI in streamlining operations and reducing costs. This approach enables Paebbl to stay competitive while scaling its impact.A Collaborative Vision for DecarbonizationMarta emphasizes the importance of partnerships to decarbonize the built environment, stating, “It's going to take a movement.” Through strategic collaborations with industry leaders like Holcim and Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund, Paebbl is driving adoption of sustainable building materials. The company's mission is clear: to make flagship construction projects, such as Saudi Arabia's Neom city, massive carbon sinks rather than emitters.Paebbl exemplifies how innovation and collaboration can tackle one of the world's most pressing challenges: climate change. By turning CO2 into sustainable materials, the company is not only reducing emissions but also paving the way for a greener future. As Marta puts it, “What if the most ambitious construction projects could be the world's largest carbon stores?” Find Marta on:LinkedIn: Marta SjögrenTwitter/X: @martasjogren Find Ben on:LinkedIn: Ben CostantiniTwitter/X: @bencostantini --Be sure to follow Sesamers on Instagram, LinkedIn, and X for more cool stories from the people we catch during the best Tech events!

Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today! The worlds of cyberpunk stories provide their characters the ability to be whoever they want to be, freed from the prison of biology by body modification technology and virtual experiences. But the origin and first steps of the publishing reality of cyberpunk were primarily filtered through the pens of white, male, and straight authors. How has the future of cyberpunk kept pace with our present in the representation of queer bodies in the 21st century? And is there something intrinsic about cyberpunk fiction that mirrors the LGBT+ experience? In this episode, we discuss the "queerness" of cyberpunk fiction in all its forms, and we try to set the table for an ongoing examination of the evolution of LGBT+ representation in cyberpunk, both on the page and behind the pen. We also talk about whalepunk, identity vs. sexuality, the seeming inherent machismo of cyberpunk protagonists, the influence of LGBT writers on early cyberpunk scribes, gay characters as signifiers of "danger", the liminal spaces of cyberpunk, the marginalized fans of sci-fi, quantum computing is gay computing, the absence of trans protagonists, Glen or Gren?, the false "essentialism" of the body in cyberpunk, stanning for Switch, the triumph of the mind over the meat, and Pride Month in Night City!Ten percent is not enough!Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. Starting a career with the ambition of becoming a medical doctor and ending up a technical leader for a major automaker might seem an unlikely path, but for Anders Sjögren, who leads data and AI innovation projects for Volvo Cars, it was a perfect trajectory. On this episode, Anders joins Sam and Shervin to explain the ways the carmaker uses data and artificial intelligence to inform manufacturing — ensuring that parts are made consistently and as efficiently as possible — as well as driver experience and safety. He also outlines some specific ways smart technology keeps drivers alert and aware of conditions around them and describes Volvo's approach to technology-driven innovation.
