The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring concludes in such a beautiful way. Sam and Frodo, Merry and Pippin, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, and then of course, the tragedies of Boromir and Gandalf. The 7 who remain of the fellowship must go their separate ways. And while the movie tells us time and time again that Frodo must do this alone, Sam comes with him. J.R.R. Tolkien chose to hinge his works on certain beautiful truths that seem evident in the world around him, and explained the sadness and sorrow, and the goodness and beauty, in ways that no fictional writers have been able to do since. What an absolute beast. It can't be overstated how much good he has done for the world. Peter Jackson tries and largely succeeds in living up to Tolkien's high, high standards in this film. After the Council, the hobbits gather to talk about the situation. Merry and Pippin insist that if Sam is going to accompany Frodo, they want to come, too. Meanwhile, Elrond is sending out scouts to gather intelligence, and they are returning with news. It looks as if Frodo and whoever goes along will set out just as winter begins. In particular, it is important they not set out until they get news of what became of the Black Riders, because they lost their horses at the ford. Once it seems clear the Black Riders—the Nine—are at least temporarily out of the picture, Elrond summons the hobbits and asks Frodo if he is still willing to go to Mordor. Besides Sam, Elrond appoints Gandalf, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir, and finally, Merry and Pippin. This makes a Company of nine: "the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil." They are to leave in seven days. In preparation for the journey, the Elves forge the broken pieces of Narsil into a new sword for Aragorn named Andúril. Bilbo gives Frodo a sword—Sting—and a Dwarf-made shirt of mail made of mithril, a rare metal prized by Dwarves. Frodo puts the mail under his clothing. Boromir blows a great horn. Bill, the pony bought from Bill Ferny, is made ready. The Fellowship sets off and soon comes to a mountain range. They plan to cross by climbing the Redhorn Gate—a pass through the mountains on the far side of one high peak—Caradhras. They are overtaken by a flock of crows of a particular type known to be from Fangorn Forest. As they ascend, they find the going more and more cold and snowy. Finally, they must turn back, or risk freezing to death. The Fellowship of the Ring: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Phil Dragash. Art by Jian Guo.

Today Chase & Josh close out The Fellowship of the Ring in it's entirety as we compare the second half of the novel (as well as the first chapter of The Two Towers) to the Extended Edition Part 2 film!   Tag along as we discuss some of the notable differences found between the movie and the book such as; The reforging of Elendil's sword and Aragorn taking it straight from Rivendell, who the Crebain report to, who manipulates the weather on the mountain Caradhras, the Fellowship being attacked by a pack of wolves prior to their trip into Moria, who it was that disturbs the lake before the mountain's entrance, which creature spears Frodo, how the company enters Lothlórien, the incorporation of a lead Uruk-hai, and an all out battle scene that we get to visually witness.   With The Riddikulus Crew notating the main differences that stood out to them individually, providing their thoughts on the second half of The Fellowship of the Ring, giving their takeaways on the first installment of the series as a whole and providing a numeric ranking score for both the novel and the film, stay tuned!   'At that moment there was a twang of bowstrings: several arrows whistled over them, and some fell among them.  One smote Frodo between the shoulders and he lurched forward with a cry, letting go his paddle: but the arrow fell back, foiled by his hidden coat of mail.  Another passed through Aragorn's hood; and a third stood fast in the gunwale of the second boat, close by Merry's hand.  Sam thought he could glimpse black figures running to and fro upon the long shingle-banks that lay under the eastern shore.  They seemed very near.'

Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Jared’s choice of topic: magic. It may seem strange given that one of Tolkien’s most central and indelible characters, Gandalf, is a wizard, but magic plays a more understated role in Middle-earth than it might seem on first blush. Starting with the famed exchange between Galadriel, Frodo and Sam about whether her mirror is magic—a question Galadriel seems not to understand—we consider magic’s role as an at once strong and yet sublimated element throughout Tolkien’s Middle-earth work. What does it mean that Gandalf often seems reluctant to do anything magical to start with? Is magic something intrinsic to certain characters, things and places, or is it a matter of craft and study? How does Tolkien’s use of magic differ or resemble magic as portrayed in other fantasy authors’ work? Does the off-hand mention of Queen Berúthiel in The Lord of the Rings contain a larger clue to how widespread magic itself might be? And which of us confessed to trying to use Gandalf’s fire-creating spell on the slopes of Caradhras to set sticks on fire in their backyard when they were 12 years old?

Gandalf beat the mini boss, leveled up, got new gear, and now he can fight Saruman. 17:30 Gandalf is the jerk that sends the party away and claims all the loot and experience points. Frank the balrog! 18:00 What’s the story Frank? 18:13 Hot dogs for balrogs 18:28 We don’t want to know what balrogs want. 18:45 Sauron is not an Istari?!?! Aren’t they just maia sent by a vala? Nope! 19:10 Istari means a thing 19:19 Bringer of hot dogs to balrogs? 19:33 It means wizard. 20:04 Istari is an order of Maia. There are some that didn’t leave valinor. 20:33 It’s not just these 5. Erica starts humming for no reason while Dan loses his mind for a while. 20:49 Number unknown but 5 chiefs came to the northeast of middle earth. UT p 389 there may be more. 21:26 Saruman is the chief of the order according to Gandalf. The order=all Istari! 21:40 When Gandalf breaks the staff, Saruman mentions the staffs of the 5 wizards. Do only 5 have staffs? 22:07 What do staffs do?!?! Breaking them? Collecting them? *if you know anything about this let us know so Erica can research it! 22:24 Norse mythology. Erica loves Sam. 24:00 Gandalf thought of differently in different places, like Rivendell 24:21 Elrond’s attitude toward Gandalf 24:38 Elrond seems unhappy to see him. Is that Elrond or just Hugo Weaving’s acting? 25:03 Gandalf’s activities mean change. Sauron falling, the destruction of the ring may cause the other rings to lose power. The elves power diminishing. 26:58 Maybe Gandalf is more powerful than Saruman.
