Hark, Void! Middle-Earth's 007, Gamgee, Samwise Gamgee, saves the world from ring-obsessed Gollum while Frodo staggers into danger constantly. Literally, Elrond will only let Arwen marry Aragorn AFTER he's defeated ultimate evil in the world. Now THAT'S a father-in-law. ORCS HAVE NAMES TOO!! And feelings! No one hates orcs more than other orcs! Aragorn runs like a Muppet, Gandalf acts like a dad on a road trip, wraith tractor-beams, Jennifer Coolidge has thoughts on Minas Morgul, and Osgiliath is such a pleasant word to say. But really, this movie is about the Rohirrim and Theoden's epic speech. But also, they should just have armies of women to fight the Nazgûl. DEEEAAAAATTHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Cue tears)

Link to charity fundraiser and socials: https://linktr.ee/lotradhome This week we take a look at the Lord of the Nazgûl and his very long history. This guy is like 4000 years old, and we only see him for a short time in Lord of the Rings. Criminal. Let's look at why he was the chief of Sauron's servants.
Ever wondered about the untold epilogues of your favorite "Lord of the Rings" characters? We're not just stopping at the end of the third age; our episode traverses the enduring bond between Legolas and Gimli, the noble roles Merry and Pippin embrace in the Shire, and of course, the beauty and tragedy of Aragorn and Arwen's tale. It's a celebration of the paths walked by Tolkien's beloved characters after the fall of Sauron, and an invitation to those enchanted by the lore of Middle-earth.Are you ready to put your Middle-earth knowledge to the test? Our co-host Tom steps up to the plate in a thrilling trivia quiz that spans the intricate details of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe. As he tackles questions about the White Tree of Gondor and the steeds of the Nazgûl, you'll be reminded of the profound mythology that has captured the hearts of fans worldwide. Meanwhile, we switch lanes and dive into the immersive experiences of the latest PS5 exclusives, dissecting a top-tier horror title and the creature-collecting craze of "Palworld." The episode is a treasure trove of information for both the Tolkien aficionado and the avid gamer. This episode is not just about trivia and games; we confront the real issues gamers face, from hit registration woes to bugs that developers overlook. We also get into the latest buzz from the world of movies and TV, including exciting updates on a Halo board game and the potential return of Cillian Murphy on the project "28 Years Later." The episode wraps up with a discussion on the rocky launch of the "Suicide Squad" game and a scoop on an "Among Us" animated TV show. So, if you're in for a ride through the post-war destinies of iconic characters, challenging quizzes, and the latest in gaming and screen news, our show is your one-stop entertainment hub.Support the show
Mount Doom threatens to burn the land and boil the sea; Matt threatens more “where there's a whip” references. Join us as we're joined by Tom Hillman to talk about his book Pity, Power, and Tolkien's Ring just in time for said ring to be destroyed in our final episode on the chapter Mount Doom. Sam finally feels pity for Gollum, the Phial of Galadriel's batteries die, and Frodo thinks he has a better idea for the Ring after all. We discuss the many alternate endings that Tolkien envisioned here, speculate about how quickly the Nazgûl could arrive, and confirm that Santa Claus is Eärendil. Also, Matt coins a new word which is really just an old word.
Embark on a profound exploration of Middle-earth as Tom and I, sans our third musketeer Hayden, immerse you in the mystical world of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." Revel in the rich tapestry woven by J.R.R. Tolkien, from the eerie transformation of men into the Nazgûl to Frodo's perilous journey with the One Ring. Our discussion spans the ancient origins of Gandalf the Grey to the thunderous battle between Gandalf and the Balrog, inviting you to uncover the layers of complexity within Tolkien's universe.Feel the palpable tension as we scrutinize the strategic formation of the Fellowship, the weight of secrecy, and their daunting mission to thwart Sauron. We consider the mystical might of elves, the dwarves' storied past, and the legendary figures that loom large in Tolkien's epic saga. The poignant last stand of Boromir and the Fellowship's heart-wrenching decision to part ways are recounted with fervent detail, setting the stage for the ensuing chapters of the trilogy. As our journey through Middle-earth concludes for the moment, Tom and I confront the contentious notion of a "Lord of the Rings" film series reboot. We share candid thoughts on the cinematic legacy of the original trilogy, the artistry of sword master Bob Anderson, and the delicate balance of honoring a masterpiece while entertaining the prospect of reimagination. We may not have mystical rings or elvish cloaks, but we've certainly woven an episode brimming with passion for one of the greatest fantasy tales ever told.Support the show

Frodo and Sam get out of the predicament in the Tower only to have to head further into Mordor, as Alan and Matt get out of their QAN predicament only to have to… well, do this. Join us as Sam exaggerates the lengths of thorns while we begin our four-part walk through The Land of Shadow. Nazgûl cries just don't hold the same terror anymore, Shagrat is not delivering water despite Sam's professed interest, and we spend way too much time talking about the wind. Also, we laugh at the Rankin-Bass RotK Witch-king. "So you have chosen death." In this episode we pick up right where we left off - on the banks of the River Bruinen. The Nazgûl have been washed away and we are left with pledges, poetry and sacred pathways. The second half of the Fellowship begins with many meetings, strangers from distant lands, friends of old... gathered together to discuss the fate of the one ring. The characters we know and love declare their allegiance to Frodo and his dharma. And off they set, on a journey to Mount Doom that is doomed from the first footsteps. Sometimes, the road to dharma is fraught and tangled. We also step back in time for some respite in the house of Tom Bombadil, the original Fool. Finally, we honour the sweet sacrifices we make to one another, when it is our dharma to follow those we love on the path of darkness, despair and Death. May Lórien always be the place that holds us and the pains which are too great to carry alone. “I made a promise, Mr. Frodo. A promise. Don't you leave him, Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to, I don't mean to." Please let us know what you think, follow us and find us on instagram @fortheshire.pod
In this chapter of For the Shire we shine a light on a much beloved character, Eowyn. She is the Shieldmaiden of Rohan who rides to war with a broken heart, slays the Lord of the Nazgûl and is plunged into the realm of the unconscious. On awakening, she faces two choices: to follow her despair to The Black Gate of Mordor, or allow her decades of grief to transmute into softness. Eowyn is a complex, complicated and rather contemporary expression of the female experience. We loved celebrating her journey from prophecy to reality, and hope you will too.
Or, for our friends across the pond, ‘Maths Are Hard'. The Man of the West begins this week with a question: how many Nazgûl does it take to change a lightbulb on Amon Sûl?This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5854727/advertisement

Discussion of The Time of Contempt, Chapter 2 After what feels like years of teasing, the Wild Hunt has finally made its appearance! And boy is she scary. Sapkowski has managed yet again to take traditional Tolkien-y tropes and flip them on their heads – the Nazgûl, armies of the undead, and weather-controlling wizards to name a few. Our central characters are finally reunited, and primed to move forward on their quest – but where to? We certainly don't know, and we love it. We also discuss the uncomfortably eerie familiarity of the rising (and increasingly normalized) fascism in the wake of Nilfgaard's takeover. Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Oriana's choice of topic: Legolas Greenleaf. Not originally planned as a member of the Fellowship – the honor was going to go to Glorfindel, who helps Aragorn and the hobbits evade the Nazgûl en route to Rivendell – Legolas ended up as a classic retcon character, introduced as the son of Thranduil, the Elvenking featured in The Hobbit, even though no such character was ever mentioned or described in that book. A brilliant archer who makes light of burdens, literally can walk on snow and isn't above teasing his suffering companions – but someone who can react badly if his own privilege is ever questioned – he's at once fascinating and more than a little infuriating, though his unique relationship with Gimli is one of The Lord of the Rings's more intriguing subplots. What kind of universality can be read into the character as maybe representing what Elves are like – or is he simply his own individual self? How does he come across to the hobbits, who are the ones ‘telling' the story in Tolkien's own construction of it, and is he truly relatable to them at all? What does his profound change of mood when he nears the sea say about Tolkien's deeper conception of not only Elves but how they considered time? And just what do we think of Orlando Bloom's performance of the character in the Peter Jackson films? (And separately: did we have thoughts on various The Rings of Power trailers? Oh did we ever.)SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. The Way Up Is Down I got a text today from a friend who's sitting on a beach finishing reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time (oh, to be in his sandals!). He said it had been well over a decade since he'd watched The Return of the King and he had totally forgotten one of its biggest twists. The Witch-King of Angmar, Lord of the Nazgûl, who could “never be hindered by a man” was very much hindered by… a young woman, and a hobbit (half a man, some would say). As surprising and rewarding as that little verbal loophole is to the new (or forgetful) reader, imagine the shock to readers in the decades before women were commonly seen in battle at all! Yet by far the most surprised of creatures was that vile Ringwraith. He never saw it coming, and wouldn't have believed it if you told him. Those who operate according to the ways and powers of this world cannot conceive of the economy of God. How can it be that the weak could so shame the strong? He was like the Mount of Bashan in Psalm 68 (our text again this week), looking down on “halflings,” like Pippen, or a little hill like Zion, with utter contempt. I was so pleased to discover that the background to this Psalm is formed in part by the story from Judges of Deborah and Barak, and Jael, the brave young woman who brought down the commander Sisera with a tent peg through his temple. What an exhilarating tale of the lowly defeating the exalted! A church member invoked the saying this week as she unexpectedly found herself in a hospital waiting room: “Where dependence is the goal, weakness is an advantage.” I repeat it ad nauseam to you guys because I have found it to be one of the kinder truths I have ever encountered. Don't get me wrong: I resist feeling or being seen as weak with every fiber of my broken little heart. But that is also exactly where I have most felt the abiding presence of God, for Whom I am made. And He's been so faithful to show me that the way up is down. So, I hope you can join us this weekend as we continue on to part two of three in plumbing the depths of our final Messianic Psalm this summer. - joshua
Sam desperately tries to get through the blocked passage while the Orc captains — oblivious that their eaves are being dropped — continue complaining about their bosses (side note: we're seriously creeped out by the fact that the Nazgûl actually give Orc officers the creeps). But when one of the captains reveals some new information, Sam suddenly realizes that getting to Frodo is more urgent than he thought. All this, plus Orc dialogue delivered with increasingly sore throats, a long sidebar on the moral code of Orcs, and an excerpt from our recent interview on the Rings of Power Wrap-up podcast with dialect coach Leith McPherson.

Today Chase & Josh close out The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in its entirety as we compare the second half of the Extended Edition film, to its corresponding sections of the novel. Keep in mind the sequences do not line up as the perspectives shift focus so there are moments that happen early in the novel, that do not occur until later in the film and vice-versa! Tag along as we discuss some of the notable differences found between the movie and the book such as; the Isengard wolves ambush of Rohan, the budding love triangle of Arwen, Éowyn and Aragorn, the portrayal of Faramir's character, who Gandalf brings on the first light of the 5th day to save Rohan at Helms Deep, and Frodo coming face to face with the Nazgûl. With the Riddikulus Crew discussing the main notable differences that stood out to each individually, providing a numeric grade in regards to Part 2 of the film as well as a numeric grade for matching moments of the novel, giving an overall score for the Two Towers as a whole and comparing an epic battle scene with another franchise, this is one you don't want to miss. "But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo." - Faramir
