Rabbi Breitowitz shares his insights on the ethics of separating the art from the artist (as in the most recent case with Chaim Walder), the miraculous existence and success of modern-day Israel (the Haredi argument against Zionism vs the argument for post-facto religious Zionism), the purpose of prayer since we can't change God's mind (and the superstitious elements that some Jews use to close the gap e.g. saying a "mystical" formulation for 40 days by the Kotel, etc.), the recent dogmatic "Daas Torah" rejection of metaphoric readings of certain parts in the Torah (e.g. Rambam, Sforno, Radaq, and Ralbag interpreted some or all of the Genesis narrative to be allegorical, Ibn Casspi said the entire book of Yonah was a vision, Rambam said any story mentioning angels is a vision, Chazal believing Iyyov wasn't a real person, etc.), and the hottest topic of late, the Torah view of abortion.

Rabbi Bashevkin explains why stories of tzaddikim are inspiring and beneficial, especially for children. But is this ideal considering that the Torah seems to not hide or sugarcoat the mistakes of our ancestors, while actually making their failures integral to their narratives. If the Torah did not find it beneficial to gloss over the mistakes or flaws of our greatest heroes, why should we employ such thinking today? His answer may surprise you. He also discusses the controversial beliefs of Ishbitz Hassidut. Antinomianism is a very dangerous and paradoxical doctrine which seems to go against the most intuitive notions of free will and personal responsibility. Why didn't this fact negatively affect the Ishbitz community in terms of their approach to Judaism, as some might have expected it to, such as with the Sabbateans? We also talked about a polarizing idea among Orthodox Jews: Zionism. The approach that many Haredim have taken is to reject it as heresy, citing the Aggadah of "The 3 Oaths" as support for their argument. To counter that, religious zionists easily see the modern state of Israel as a clear fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Putting politics aside and just strictly focusing on the miraculous existence of Israel, is either side missing the point and can this divide ever be resolved? Lastly, being that the Rabbi wrote a book on sin, we asked him to give us his take on "separating the art from the artist", a recent example being the Chaim Walder case. We've noticed that some people were torn about what to do with his popular children's books after all the allegations of sexual abuse came to light. Our opinion is to dispose of these books, but we want to know where the line is. For example, one might make the case against singing Carlebach niggunim because his alleged inappropriate behavior, etc. Some might say "why not watch The Cosby Show for its lessons since the rest of the cast didn't deserve to be cancelled", or that Michael Jackson's or R.Kelly's music can still be enjoyed since the studio is a separate domain from domestic life. We asked what he thinks is the proper approach to this issue in general.

Za'akah, an organization that helps survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the Orthodox Jewish community, recently posted on social media about the arrest of an elderly Quebec rabbi who was charged with sex crimes against a minor that date back 25 years. With a publication ban on the complainant's name, we can't reveal too many details at this time, except to confirm that there was an arrest warrant issued two years ago and the man was picked up at around Passover 2022 in Toronto. The announcement came just weeks before The CJN published an essay by Lorie Wolfe, a musician in Toronto who decided to go public accusing a doctor of sexually assaulting her when she was 17. In both cases, the accused men wound up not at a police station, but a beit din—the rabbinical court that handles matters in a quieter fashion. Wolfe's abuser paid a fine and continued to practise medicine for 15 years; the Quebec rabbi, who spent time as an educator in Montreal, was reportedly told to simply leave Canada for Israel—which he did, in fact, do. To dissect the persistent problems facing the Orthodox community, and discuss the aftermath of the now-infamous Chaim Walder case, we're joined by Asher Lovy, the director of Za'akah, and Ariella Kay, a case manager for the organization and one of their social media producers. Chester the Molester, or the Orthodox Community's Dirty Little Secret Nate starts off the discussion by uttering just one word, “Molestation” and Hershy responds with, “OK, we are going to go there.” And indeed, there they go. The Chaim Walder case is brought up. Nate then shares that his second grade rebbe was charged with molestation. That sets the mood. Nate takes it to the next level when he shares a shocking personal revelation. Nate and Hershy agree that the Ultra-Orthodox community continues to allow abuse and molestation because they protect the accused to keep the community intact. Molesters know inherently that they can continue without fear because they know that their friends and peers will believe them instead of the victims for any of several reasons; from the built-in community control and sexism, to religious extremism. Nate and Hershy go from discussing the problem to potential solutions including providing sex-ed to pre-puberty males, which could allow for knowledge on how to safely channel their sexual urges. Finally, Nate and Hershy urge these communities to change their policies and allow police to conduct due process against accused molesters, rather than try to shield and hush up. On a separate note, it wouldn't be a Nate and Hershy podcast without controversy and perhaps a little wackiness. Somewhere in the seriousness of discussing molestation in the community, Nate and Hershy change course and posit that Arab aggression throughout Israel would be slowed down or even ended if the Israeli military simply flew over their territories and dropped a bunch of porn magazines. Yes, porn. And with that, I say enjoy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/humble-brag/support

How we might take a step back from the sensational to ask ourselves (aside from the obvious need to protect the innocent and believe the victimized)  what message we can take from this for our own spiritual growth...Note: We did not chose to avoid the name of the perpetrator (Chaim Walder) during the epsidoe to protect him or his memory or for some fall sense of what Lashon Harah is, but rather because his identity is known, no one needs us for that news, and we have no desire to unnecessarily welcome negative energy into a space of personal positive  growth and development, and to honor the Victims (and avoid the tendency to virtue signal by calling out the villain).Consciously The Podcast  is a project of The Light Revealed. The news that convulsed the Jewish world last week about Chaim Walder's suicide, following many credible accusations against him of sexual abuse and harassment, highlighted Orthodoxy's leadership crisis. Some prominent rabbis in different sectors of Orthodoxy said and did the right things; but many did not. Some of what these other leaders publicly asserted was ignorant, hurtful, and damaging. Some leaders even implicitly or explicitly showed honor to Walder... and last week, a victim of Walder's abuse died by suicide, apparently triggered by the honor shown to Walder after his death. Yes, we have a leadership crisis. The occasion of Walder's suicide didn't create that crisis, but it may have caused that crisis to reach a boiling point. The question now is, what do we do about it? To talk about this crisis Scott spoke with Rabbi Yosef Blau, the senior mashgiach ruchani at Yeshiva University. TLDR: help us be the best Charedim that we can be. Find your closest black hat-pants-shoes and white shirt, yeshiva fellow. Ask how you can help start a Vaad Hatznius to combat voyeurism and me2-type situations. Ask how you can help start a Va'ad L'Tohar HaChinuch, to root out ‘pritzus' attacking our tinokos shel beis rabban. If you have an idea teach us. Charedism is VERY anti inappropriate sex. Help us. On December 27, celebrated children's author Chaim Walder was found dead after apparently shooting himself in a Petach Tikva cemetery. In November, Walder had been credibly accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment in an expose published by Haaretz; this was followed by the revelation that these particular accusations were only the tip of the iceberg. Walder, it turned out, was a monster. The news of Walder's suicide has rocked the Orthodox world. Scott asked Shana Aaronson, the executive director of Magen, to join him again on the podcast to answer questions that she has been receiving over the past two days. Although Shana discussed Chaim Walder last month in episode 87, she now answers some of the new questions that have arisen, as well as questions that people asked after listening to the earlier discussion. https://www.timesofisrael.com/haredi-author-haim-walder-accused-of-serial-sexual-abuse-dies-in-apparent-suicide/ Chaim Walder, the popular ultra-Orthodox children's author who was accused of sexually abusing women and children, was found dead in a Petah Tikva cemetery on Monday. Police said a man was found in the cemetery just before 1 p.m. with a gunshot wound. A passerby heard the shot and alerted authorities. According to initial reports, Walder died by suicide and was found next to the grave of his son, who died several years ago of cancer. He had previously threatened to take his life over the revelation of accusations against him. The author of 80 books, Walder, 53, had reportedly left his house early Monday after having holed up there for days, and his family had raised the alarm, concerned for his safety. He was accused last month by three women who said he had sexually abused them when they were 12, 15, and 20, respectively. A famous ultra-Orthodox author of children's books, Chaim Walder, was accused by multiple women of sexual abuse.  Their disturbing accounts, first reported in Haaretz, are creating shock waves in Haredi communities, from Jerusalem to Brooklyn. Senior analyst Anshel Pfeffer joins the podcast to discuss the story, starting at time code 11:00. Earlier on this week's episode, we ask: Why did Turkey arrest two innocent Israeli tourists and accuse them of espionage, and why did 'Sultan' Recep Tayyip Erdogan agree to release them? Turkey expert Dr. Gallia Lindenstrauss says the incident could open the door to broader rapprochement between Israel and Turkey. Listen to her conversation with host Amir Tibon. Just over a week ago, we heard the very disturbing news that the well known and influential children's author, Chaim Walder, was accused by multiple people of sexually abusing several girls between the ages of 13 and 20. Apart from his celebrity as an author, Walder has worked as a therapist, and is the founder of the Center for the Child and Family in Bnei Brak, a talk show host, and a columnist. After these allegations were published in Haaretz and other media outlets, his newspaper and radio station have discontinued working with him, while numerous stores have stopped selling all of his books. Shana Aaronson, the executive director of Magen, had heard of these allegations before they became public, and Scott spoke with her both about the Chaim Walder situation, as well as about how parents can protect children from sexual abuse. They talked about what parents should and should not do, what are the yellow and red flags they should notice, and if they notice such warning signs, what they should do next.
