The two cases shared a checklist of similarities - a conventionally handsome perpetrator preying on sex workers behind closed hotel doors. But the difference in how the media and investigators handled the two serial killers who took the lives of Robin West, Sarah Butler, Joanne Brown, Mawa Doumbia, and Julissa Brisman could not have been more stark. In today's culture, it's easy to be sedentary. Most people have access to food, entertainment, and work without having to move much at all. And of course, a sedentary lifestyle has been shown to be linked to a whole host of chronic diseases. The question is: how do we become more active in a culture that encourages a sedentary lifestyle? Today's guest, Katy Bowman is a biomechanist, bestselling author, and expert in all things movement, mobility, and functionality. She's back on The Model Health Show for another engaging conversation on how (and why) to add more essential movement into your daily routine. In this conversation, we're going to cover how our sedentary, convenience-based culture removes opportunities for movement, the difference between movement and exercise, and specific ways to improve your functionality—from your eyes to your feet. Katy has an insightful way of teaching these movement principles, and I know you're going to take away something that changes the way you think and move. Enjoy! In this episode you'll discover: An important distinction between movement and exercise. (12:52) Why reducing movement to its parts is like dissecting an apple. (15:44) The problem with outsourcing our movement for convenience. (17:58) Why labor can be an important category of movement. (19:28) The importance of the eye-brain connection and how to strengthen it. (25:31) How working on your spinal curvature can improve your outcomes as you age. (28:47) The role your feet play in whole body movement. (34:50) A simple stretch you can use to improve the functionality of your feet. (53:19) Why simply sitting on the floor can increase your mobility. (56:36) What we can learn from the way that kids move. (59:58) How to improve your physical workload in middle age. (1:01:45) Why we need to broaden our definition of exercise. Folks, when we began dreaming about the Parenting Personalities series, we had a lot of fun ideas about what we'd hoped to cover. The central idea for the two of us was that we would use this incredibly valuable tool of the Enneagram that we use in the everyday of our work at Daystar. As a foundational piece of this Parenting Personality series. So we'd been holding on to a little surprise for quite some time. We had the chance to fly to Dallas,TX and interview our favorite Enneagram teachers and spend time in their company learning as we always do, when we're in their company. Suzanne and Reverend Joseph Stabile, who we love dearly and have learned so much from. And we got a chance to sit down and first hear them talk about how they developed life in the Trinity Ministries and learned the Enneagram. How they found their way to this tool. And then we traveled through every number and talk about the Enneagram and parenting. And it is such a rich, valuable conversation that we'd been so excited to share with you. We've been holding on to this for some time. And hang on until the end, because after we travel through the numbers we will spend some time at the end of the conversation talking about spiritual practices and disciplines for the numbers. You're going to love this conversation with our delightful and wise friends, Suzanne and Joe Stabile! In this episode, Emily Kaplan—co-founder of the Broken Science Initiative (BSI)—pulls back the curtain on systemic flaws undermining modern research. From manipulated data in high-impact journals to misuse of peer review and statistical tools like p-values, Emily reveals how corruption and misconduct shape medicine, including the infamous Alzheimer’s study that misled treatment development for years. She explains how BSI is working to restore trust in science through education, transparency, and a renewed focus on metabolic health. One key effort is MetFix, a grassroots initiative empowering communities to prevent and reverse chronic disease with nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Emily brings deep expertise in strategy and communication. As BSI’s CEO, she has built educational platforms, training programs, and professional networks that unite healthcare workers, patients, and scientists to confront irreproducibility, misconduct, and the true drivers of chronic illness. Through in-person and online events, BSI fosters communities committed to what’s working—and exposing what’s broken—in modern medicine. Her career spans journalism, entrepreneurship, and high-level advising. She co-founded The Kleio Group, guiding companies, celebrities, and politicians through strategic communication and crisis. She previously scaled Prep Cosmetics into a national chain, co-developed one of the first geolocation-based dating apps, and founded Prime Fitness and Nutrition, a women’s health concept with three locations. Emily has also hosted the Empowered Health Podcast, authored two books with HarperCollins Leadership, and contributed to ABC News, Boston Magazine, and major outlets. With degrees from Smith College and Northwestern, plus advanced studies at Harvard Law, Emily blends business acumen, investigative rigor, and a passion for performance. Her mission: challenge broken science and empower individuals to reclaim health. Okay you guys, Buckle up! We just interviewed Dr. Kevin Leman, whose work on Birth Order, we have talked about, referenced, more times than we could possibly count. We are so excited about having this conversation with him. We knew without a doubt we'd learn a lot. We were not expecting to laugh as much as we did. And we were doubled over in some moments. He is so funny, which will make more sense when he talks about his birth order and how that translates to often be true for that particular birth order. Now stick around to the end, because he threw out some incredible wisdom of what to say to kids: who want everything to be fair, and how to navigate allowance, expectations and bed time unique to birth order. And stick around because he gave David a really hard time about being a 1st born. He teased him hard and so I never said that I was too, I just laughed along! Humanity's relationship with black holes began in 1783 in a small English village, when clergyman John Michell posed a startling question: What if there are objects in space that are so large and heavy that not even light can escape them? Almost 250 years later, in April 2019, scientists presented the first picture of a black hole. Profoundly inspired by that image, physicist Jonas Enander has traveled the world to investigate how our understanding of these elusive celestial objects has evolved since the days of Michell. With the particular goal of discovering our human connection to black holes, Enander visits telescopes and observatories, delves deeply into archives, and interviews over 20 world-leading experts, including several Nobel laureates. With Facing Infinity: Black Holes and Our Place on Earth (The Experiment Press, 2025), he takes us on a spellbinding journey into the universe's greatest mystery, deciphers the most mind-bending science, and answers questions surrounding how black holes work, where they come from, and what role they play in the universe. Along the way Enander discovers how our desire to understand black holes inadvertently paved the way for the invention of Wi-Fi and the calibration of our global navigation satellites, how astronomical discovery became entangled with colonial conflicts, and how our looking outward gave us critical evidence of the impact of climate change. Facing Infinity helps us appreciate and understand as never before these mysterious celestial objects and our surprising connections to them. Learn more about your ad choices. My guest is Dr. Christof Koch, PhD, a pioneering researcher on the topic of consciousness, an investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and the chief scientist at the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation. We discuss the neuroscience of consciousness—how it arises in our brain, how it shapes our identity and how we can modify and expand it. Dr. Koch explains how we all experience life through a unique “perception box,” which holds our beliefs, our memories and thus our biases about reality. We discuss how human consciousness is changed by meditation, non-sleep deep rest, psychedelics, dreams and virtual reality. Parenting Personalities is a series for understanding more of yourself, understanding your kids personalities. We will do a deep dive into Enneagram numbers, Birth order, Extroverts/ Introverts and Attachment styles in this series and a host of other surprises. 266: After an intense struggle with depression, Karalynne Call began to explore the way that nutrition impacted mental health. This journey quite literally saved her life - by prioritizing real foods and regular exercise, she felt whole again. And along the way, she created one of my favorite clean food brands, Just Ingredients. Karalynne is known for her food swaps on social media, where she helps people all over the world identify the cleaner alternatives to unhealthy ultraprocessed pantry staples. We spend so much energy trying to think our way to insight, yet a fuller understanding of our lives often arrives from somewhere beyond the usual way we know ourselves. When our hands are busy with ordinary tasks something vast can sometimes settle into awareness. What happens when we discover that our bodies know a kinship with the earth our minds may have forgotten? Could belonging be less about finding our place and more about recognising we never left it? This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction to Turning Towards Life 03:03 Exploring the Source: Of Gravity and Light 05:43 The Significance of Menial Tasks 08:47 The Relationship Between Thinking and Receiving 11:45 Belonging and Recognition 14:43 Connection and Community 17:44 The Mystery of Existence and Our Place in It 20:59 The Importance of Acknowledging Our Already Existing Ways of Belonging 23:43 Creating a Sense of Belonging in the World 26:55 Conclusion and Invitations Here's our source for this week: Of Gravity and Light What we need most, we learn from the menial tasks: the novice raking sand in Buddhist texts, or sweeping leaves, his hands chilled to the bone, while understanding hovers out of reach; the changeling in a folk tale, chopping logs, poised at the dizzy edge of transformation; and everything they do is gravity: swaying above the darkness of the well to haul the bucket in; guiding the broom; finding the body's kinship with the earth beneath their feet, the lattice of a world where nothing turns or stands outside the whole; and when the insight comes, they carry on with what's at hand: the gravel path; the fire; knowing the soul is no more difficult than water, or the fig tree by the well that stood for decades, barren and inert, till every branch was answered in the stars. In this powerful conversation with Bill Rapier, you’ll discover both the practical and philosophical sides of self-defense, preparedness, and living with vigilance and intention. Bill—a former Navy SEAL and founder of Amtac Shooting—shares not only his deep expertise in firearms, blades, and integrated combatives, but also the mindset that will help you train responsibly and live ready. You’ll learn why carrying tools like firearms and knives is less about aggression and more about having “violence insurance”—a rare but critical safeguard for protecting yourself and others when it truly matters. Whether it’s choosing your first holster, sharpening threat assessment skills, or building resilience, this episode gives you the tools and mindset to elevate your preparedness (while staying true to your values and priorities). Dr. Shannon Richey is a trainer, founder of EVLO Fitness and host of the Dr. Shannon Show. She joins me for a myth-busting deep dive into women's fitness, physiology, and how to get the results we are striving for. We unpack what most people get wrong about training men vs. women, the truth about cycle syncing, and why building a sustainable routine matters more than chasing soreness or “no pain, no gain.” Dr. Richey breaks down progressive load, recovery days, and the science of rest, plus how to avoid overtraining while still seeing results. We get into hot topics like Pilates vs. strength training, why women sometimes feel “bulky,” and the real metabolic benefits of muscle. She also shares practical strategies for reaching body composition goals with or without food tracking, healthy high-protein snacks, how to diet without missing out on fun, and the four key pillars for building muscle. Ever wonder why some people just click with everyone? Today's episode is honestly WILD. I read through YOUR anonymous confessions and whew… some of y'all are going THROUGH it. From being with someone who doesn't love you back to struggling with p*rn, judging other moms, and stealing… this one hit hard. I react to your anonymous confessions with as much love and truth as I can, because honestly, we've all been there in some way. And I just want to remind you: you are not alone. There is freedom in confession, and I pray this episode gives you hope, healing, and permission to open up and pursue God's best for your life.

Jarek Berga - August 10th 2025 This week we paused our King and His Kingdom series for a timely message on avoiding the two ditches that can derail our walk with Jesus—independence and codependence. Drawing from Hebrews 10 and Galatians 6, we're challenged to embrace interdependence: owning our personal load while helping bear one another's burdens in Christ. Along the way, Pastor Jarek shares personal stories, practical confessions, and commitments that foster a healthy, rooted community. Today we're answering the question, “How does nature teach us about the seasons?" I get to talk with my new friend, Rachel G. Jordan. She is a marine biologist and spiritual guide and using the ocean as a lens, she points us to the way God is revealed in biology AND IT IS SO COOL. We're talking about the coral reef, all that we don't know about the ocean, the intelligence of sea creatures, and you're not even ready for the insight she has about Moses crossing the Red Sea. I'm telling you, mind blowing. Rachel has a new book out called If The Ocean Has a Soul, so when this came across my desk you know I was all in. *I also want to note that we had some tech issues in the middle of recording this, so we picked back up on another day because we HAD to finish this conversation* So if you're following along in your TSF Seasons Guidebook, we're on page 83. As always, the guidebook is available for you at anniefdowns.com/seasons.. . . . . In this episode of Lifted, Tembi Locke sits down with visionary entrepreneur and changemaker Shiza Shahid – co-founder of the Malala Fund, founding partner of NOW Ventures, and CEO of Our Place – for a conversation that weaves together purpose, innovation, and heart. Shiza reflects on her journey from organizing protests in Pakistan as a teenager to becoming one of the most influential mission-driven entrepreneurs of her generation. Together, she and Tembi explore how service, storytelling, and social justice shaped Shiza's worldview, and how she's used each chapter of her life to uplift others. She shares the personal pivots that led her from McKinsey to the Malala Fund, and then to launching Our Place, a company that reimagines the kitchen as a place of cultural connection and community care. Shiza also speaks candidly about embracing her immigrant identity and learning that impact doesn't always come through scale but through the values we center each day. For anyone building a life or business rooted in meaning, this episode is a powerful meditation on leading with empathy and purpose. Learn more about your ad choices. Ziggy Marley is an eight-time Grammy winner, he's also a deeply grounded human, who leads with kindness, purpose and a whole lot of love. Ziggy grew up as the eldest son of reggae icon Bob Marley and he's carried that legacy with so much grace. But here's what we love most. Ziggy isn't just creating music that moves people, he's raising a family with intention leading with character and showing his kids and all of us what it means to live with integrity and joy. He is a dad of seven, and the way he talks about parenting is just beautiful! And delightful to hear his accent. Ziggy talks about being present, about listening, about letting his kids be who they are. It's the kind of stuff we talk about everyday. Connection over control, guiding instead of forcing. He's not just about parenting, he's an advocate, a humanitarian and author of children's books that are just as vibrant and thoughtful as his music. Everything he creates, he does with a lot of heart. So whether you're tapping your toes to True to Myself or reading one of his picture books like his newest “Pajammin” at bedtime. Ziggy Marley is one of those people who makes the world feel a little brighter, a little more loving and a whole lot more hopeful. Stay tuned, because we have a really fun conversation about how to navigate bedtime battles in a super creative way. You will love this conversation with Ziggy Marley. . . . . . Today's episode is one of the wildest, most powerful comeback stories you'll ever hear. Damon West was sentenced to 65 years in a Texas prison. Let that sink in. And yet—through mindset, service, and intentional communication—he not only turned his life around but went on to inspire thousands with his message of being a “coffee bean.” We talk about the power of how you speak to yourself (not just listen), how to lead with service, and how one conversation can truly change the direction of your entire life. In this dual release episode with The Meat Mafia podcast, I sit down in Austin, Texas, with co-hosts Brett Ender and Harrison Gray for a conversation that goes far beyond fitness and biohacking. You’ll get to explore how I integrate ancestral living with cutting-edge wellness tech—and why, even with all the gear and science, I still believe nature holds the greatest healing power. And of course, we geek out on some of the tools I use—like mouth taping for deeper sleep, red light and hydrogen therapy for recovery, and breathwork paired with prayer to anchor my mind and spirit. This episode is a window into what it means to live not just optimized, but truly boundless—in your health, your family, and your purpose.
