For the latest "High School" cycle episode, Julian, Madeline and Emilio revisit two beloved "one crazy night" teen/buddy comedies, Greg Mottola's 'Superbad' and Olivia Wilde's 'Booksmart'. The trio gets into what really works, and some of what doesn't work as well, in these two iconic films. While there are striking (and well documented) similarities between these two films, there are also notable differences. They discuss the performances of the young leads, what the presence of social media adds to one of these films, how these films present immature adults, and how common it is to be in an unbalanced friendships during your teen years. Madeline talks about the censored scene in 'Superbad' that she just saw for the very first time. Emilio shares his experiences being present at test/preview screenings for both of these movies. Julian sees a great opportunity (and name) for a current troupe of actors to identify as and adopt. And it's an Unlikely Shared Universe you won't want to miss! We'd say we didn't know how badly we needed ParaNorman (2012) on our Spooky Tuesday Pride Month lineup until we saw it, but Sydney definitely did. With everything going on in today's ~*~political climate~*~ (and despite this movie being a decade old), the stop-motion masterpiece feels more timely than ever. It's not just that it was the first animated film to feature a canonically queer character, although it totally was, just FYI. It's also that the whole story challenges viewers to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to the central message that it's OK to be different. If you still need convincing, we'll go ahead and say this: It's cozy horror, babes. Haven't you heard that's all the rage? We're closing out 2007 with the high school classic Superbad. This small budget movie made big money with many stars who are still big today: Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, and Emma Stone were all in the early stages of their careers at the time. How does it hold up? How controversial will Brad be on this one?Superbad was just one of many comedies to explode through the 2000s. So we draft our favorites, including Wedding Crashers, Step Brothers, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Borat, and more. This is a fun list with no shortage of choices. Superheroes, Movies & Superhero Movies: A Cinema Heroes Podcast
*Note* I gave this episode an explicit tag purely for the title of the film (which is also the name of the main character), which some might find inappropriate. There is no additional explicit language in this episode. In 2010, about ten years into the Superhero movie boom, director Matthew Vaughn delivered Kick-Ass: a comedy, action movie that simultaneously spoofs the superhero genre while also belonging to it. It's an R-rated, violent film but has plenty of laughs. Aaron Johnson is the titular Kick-Ass, a teenager who wonders why no one has ever tried being a superhero. So he decides to do it himself and gets in over his head. Chloe Grace Moretz is Hit-Girl and Nicolas Cage is her father Big Daddy, two vigilantes/superheroes who come out of the woodwork shortly after Kick-Ass does. How does it hold up? Check it out and let us know what you think of Kick-Ass! Cinema Heroes YouTube Instagram Twitter

Although we've come, to the end of the road. Still I can't let go. It's unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you. Although we're done! No more watch-ing this chode! Still he's not good, no. It's just factual. He's just too crazy. But what can you do?You guys, we're doi-WE DID IT! We told you we were gonna do it, and we stuck to our guns, and we dug deep, and we (insert cliche inspirational bullshit here), and we crossed the finish line, with flair! The boys that you know and love sat down, cozied up, and settled in for their final movie watch of the podcast: Nic Cage's best-rated movie, 2010's "Kick-Ass." From worst. To best. According to your IMDB ratings. We watched them. We gauged him. We each threatened to quit a few times. We became better friends, better lovers, better film critics. We became dads. We ate a few things. Drank a few more. Rawdawgged as much as we could rawdawg. All on the mic, of course. And we had a few laughs along the way. We get one last peek inside the boys' Father's Day weekends, we get a cooking lesson from a couple of professional-Guy Fieri's-in-training, and we share a harrowing tale of a boys' poker night gone wild. For those of you that have been with us since the beginning, 80 episodes deep...Thank you. We literally would not have done this without you. ***We will have one more episode after this. It’s time for another Fill Our Holes retro review! This week, it’s Ryan’s pick and he goes all the way back to the ancient year of 2013 and the superhero sequel, Kick-Ass 2! Was genau? Hört den Podcast, dann erfahrt ihr es. Viel Spaß.
Charlie Brewster is a teenager with nothing on his mind but his girlfriend Amy. But one night out his bedroom window Charlie sees a woman bitten by a vampire. No one believes Charlie's story, not even his friend Ed, but perhaps monster expert Peter Vincent can be the one to save the day! Have you seen this plot before? In addition to being the story for the original Fright Night film and the 2011 remake, it's told yet again now in the Direct-to-Home-Video release Fright Night 2: New Blood. It's the same basic story...but this time in Romania! Does this third retelling of Tom Holland's vampire tale have fangs, or does it just bite? Listen to this special bonus Halloween review from Now Playing Podcast to find out!

Dracula, Lestat, Angel, Nosferatu, Spike...Jerry??? While Hollywood continues to mine all vampire properties to build on the current fang mania, the 1985 cult film Fright Night was not one with the name recognition that made it an obvious choice for a remake, but with Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Marti Noxon writing, and an impressive cast including Colin Farrell and David Tennant, this unlikely remake seemed like it may make vampires scary again. But can it live up to the 1985 original in the eyes of fans, and will it appeal to new audiences? Listen to Arnie, Stuart, and Brock to find out!

Jerry and Billy would be great neighbors, were it not for all the apple cores they leave in the yard, and the bodies of dead prostitutes they take out in garbage bags. But while the rest of the neighborhood seems not to notice, Charlie Brewster realizes the truth--Jerry is a vampire. In 1985 Fright Night brought back the Vampire genre from the dead with its mix of horror and comedy. With Chris Sarandon as the evil, yet fashionable, Jerry, and Roddy McDowell as Peter Vincent, the fearless vampire killer, is this film's allure eternal, or should it have been buried in the 80's? Listen to Stuart, Arnie, and Brock to find out! Then come back to NowPlayingPodcast.com as we review all the Fright Night films, culminating with a review of the remake starring Colin Farrell!
