In this episode, Alice Thomson and Rachel Sylvester speak to children's book author and illustrator Cressida Cowell known for the How to Train Your Dragon, The Wizards of Once and Which Way to Anywhere book series. She was the Waterstones Children's Laureate from 2019 – 2022. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Enter the magical world of children's writer Cressida Cowell. She created the hugely successful How to Train Your Dragon series, which continues to excite children across the globe and has been turned into Oscar nominated animated films. For her latest series, Cressida explores teenage magic and Iron Age warriors. As she works on the illustrations for the second book in this new trilogy, The Wizards of Once: Twice Magic, she gives fellow children's author Michael Rosen an insight into how she creates these worlds.
Happy Lunar New Year to everyone, and welcome to the Year of the Dragon. I can't wait to share today's book, How to Train Your Dragon by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (translated by Cressida Cowell). It's very different from the movie, and worth a listen to the audio book, which you can get for free on Libby . It's a fun read, and has some poignant lessons that animal trainers, in particular, I think will get a kick out of. Based on Cressida Cowell's childhood experiences of living in a remote cottage in Scotland, her How to Train Your Dragon series of books was a wild success, and so naturally Hollywood came calling. The writer/director team of Lilo and Stitch came on board the project, and the whole mythology surrounding the island inhabitants of Berk, and the mythology and biology surrounding its dragon neighbours, was built from the ground up.How to Train Your Dragon not only has the style, the substance, the entertainment value, and a great cast, but also powerful emotional storytelling, focusing on Hiccup, a young man who doesn't quite fit in to traditional Viking standards, and instead prioritises intelligence, kindness, and Toothless, the cutest, most fearsome dragon in the land (anyone with a cat will understand!).How to Train Your Dragon seems to be somewhat forgotten in the plethora of excellent animated movies - not just from DreamWorks, but from other studios too. There's no doubt it deserves the praise, especially for its positive representation of disability.I would love to hear your thoughts on How to Train Your Dragon !CONTACT.... This episode is a chat with Cressida Cowell, author of the How To Train Your Dragon books, the Wizards of Once series and Which Way to Anywhere. Cressida grew up in London where her Dad, Michael Hare, had significant roles in several well known organisations. In the 1970's Michael bought the island of Little Colonsay, which lies between Ulva and Staffa, which was to become the family's summer home. The island, it's history, topography and setting had a profound affect on young Cressida's imagination and her summers would be spent in a reverie of story making, listening to the tales her Dad would tell her of the people of these islands' past. These experiences lead to Cressida becoming an author, and not just any author. Her works have been translated into 38 languages and sold tens of millions of copies around the world. There are film and tv adaptations of her work. In our time together we talked about her childhood memories of Little Colonsay and the people who helped her family to build their home there. We talk about her father and his love of nature. We explore the impact that the island had on her imagination, and how that lead to her career. Cressida goes on to talk about her maternal Grandfather, Alan Hare, and his experiences in the 2nd World War in Albania and how that generation of people influenced her writing. We then talk about the importance of the natural world and the nature of climate change. I owe a big thank you to my dear friend Colin Morrison for putting me in contact with Cressida. Colin and his family run Turus Mara, which, departing from Ulva Ferry, to my mind, is the best way to see Staffa, Fingal's Cave and to meet the puffins on Lunga for some puffin therapy. See the links in the episode notes for more details. Most importantly of all though at the end of this episode Cressida kindly took the time to answer three questions from Lachlan, one of her young readers who lives in Dervaig, who sent me some questions to ask. Thanks for listening! Episode links and more on whatwedointhewinter.com

This month we're reading Knock Three Times, by Cressida Cowell, and Wishes, by Muon Thi Van and Victo Ngai. Knock Three Times is the third book of a four part series, but anytime is a good time to jump on board thanks to Cressida Cowell's chatty and unnamed narrator. We praise David Tennant's performance of the audiobook very highly, but you'll want the paper book too, so you can look at the pictures. It's a silly adventure story, it's also surprisingly poignant about the difficult relationship between children and their parents. Wishes is a fabulously sparse illustrated poem about migration. Inspired by the author's own experience as a little girl in the 1980s, it's also a much broader, more universal story. We both just loved this one. The illustrations are stunning. No notes. The play Matt mentions is The Beekeeper of Aleppo. And we talked more about Pook's Hill, or the Learning Place for Spectacularly Gifted Wizards, on our schools special back in September. And if you want to hear more audiobook chat, we recommended specific books and narrators at the end of series 5. The best-selling author of How to Train Your Dragon, Cressida Cowell, explains her love for the Swedish author, Astrid Lindgren. Born in 1907, Lindgren invented the Pippi Longstocking stories to tell to her children during the war years, only writing them down for a publisher years later. Following the immense success of Pippi, Astrid Lindgren went on to write Emil of Lonneberga, Children of Noisy Village and the fantasy novels Mio, my son; Ronia the Robber's Daughter; and The Brother's Lionheart. But it was Pippi who brought her fame and fortune. She was a particular hit in post-war Germany, where it is claimed the stories helped de-nazify the Hitler youth. In the 70s and 80s Lindgren began campaigning on child, environmental and animal rights, influencing Swedish government policy and becoming known as the 'Grandmother of all Sweden'. She is still very much adored there today. Cressida Cowell is a recent children's laureate. Also joining the discussion is Johan Palmberg, Lindgren's great grandson, who recalls. "She had this understanding of what a child might be interested in ... she would be the first one to climb the trees and have the children follow her up" Produced in Bristol by Ellie Richold Image courtesy of Jacob Forsell
This is the fifth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we're reading the first half of Finn Family Moomintroll. Spring has sprung and the children have discovered a very interesting hat on top of a hill. The hat starts to transform everything that sits inside it, from eggshells, to outlandish words, to Moomintroll himself. Moominmamma is in the mood for a change of scene and leads an expedition to the Hattifatteners' lonely island. Snufkin catches sight of a terrific villain in the heart of a storm. Our theme for this book is ALCHEMY, and we're looking at transformations and all things golden. Also, colonialist fantasies, various masculinities and the first edition of Nina's Botany Corner. Our question this week pertains to Dave's nonmonogamous emotional life (!) so you'll definitely want to tune in for that. Our Spirits of the Moomins are Bluey and Knock Three Times by Cressida Cowell. Our Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Black Men Can't Jump [In Hollywood].
Nineteen85 is behind some of Drake's biggest songs, from “Hotline Bling” to “Hold On We're Going Home.” And when he's not putting his Grammy Award-winning touch on other people's music, he's making his own as part of the R&B duo DVSN. Nineteen85 talks to Tom about his new album, his love of Jimi Hendrix and what it was like producing some of Drake's most beloved songs. Plus, Cressida Cowell's children's book series “How to Train Your Dragon” has sold more than seven million copies worldwide and has become an award-winning franchise that you've probably seen with your kids… or just by yourself because it's a great movie regardless of how old you are. Cressida tells Tom about the famous franchise and about her newest book, “Which Way to Anywhere.”

K2 and his warring siblings are going to have to use this gift to cross over into another world on a daring rescue mission to save the one thing they agree on: their baby sister Annipeck. With a terrible beast and a petrifying robot assassin in their way, they must work together and learn how to be brave - because the future of their family is at stake. In this episode Gregory Dobbs cats to Cressida Cowell about the way her writing and illustration work hand-in-hand in her creative process, how she brings fantasy and reality together to tell real human stories, and her fascination for magical maps from a very early age.

From the Old Testament to Captain Underpants, via Jane Austen and pulp fiction, the relationship between the page and the screen is unbreakable. But the journey from book to screenplay can be a long and winding road that is sometimes paved with gold, and often filled with detours and potholes. To get under the skin of literary adaptations, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones decamped to the Hay literary festival where the book world's biggest names gather to enjoy discussion and sharing ideas. Cressida Cowell, author of the popular How To Train Your Dragon series, talks about the joyful process of seeing her characters come alive in a huge franchise comprising animated movies, TV series and a video game. When her first novel Brick Lane was turned into a film in 2007, Monica Ali was not involved in the adaptation. Now, 15 years later, Monica is writing the screenplay of her latest novel Love Marriage and she talks to Mark and Ellen about the new skills she has learned along the way. After many close calls with producers, Jennifer Egan (A Visit from the Goon Squad, The Candy House) knows about the mercurial nature of having work ‘optioned'. She discusses her favourite literary adaptations and shares a cinematic piece of writing by Arthur Conan Doyle. Also, broadcaster and writer Jeffrey Boakye takes a spin with an 80s classic movie to reveal the deeper issues at play in Dirty Dancing. Episode Notes A Special Bonus episode. We repost our review of the winner of Book of the Year - Audiobook: Fiction. Congratulations to the Wizards of Once: Never and Forever by Cressida Cowell as narrated by David Tennant from HODDER CHILDREN'S BOOKS. This episode also contains Cressida's acceptance speech. #Nibbies #BritishBookAwards Please get in touch via email at audiobookishpod@gmail.com or follow us on social media @audiobookishpod. From the British Book Awards website: Never and Forever is the fourth and final book in Cressida Cowell's The Wizards of Once series. Our judges celebrated the return of David Tennant as the voice of the series; his “impish, agile” narration was “masterfully executed”. One judge declared that Tennant is a “reader at the heights of his powers”; it was a “natural match of writer, text and narrator”, added another. Never and Forever reveals the story's hitherto-unknown narrator, which could have been a problem for the audiobook but the publisher found a clever solution. The attention given to the production “conjured a visual world” and an audio experience that was “pure heart from beginning to end”. Never and Forever was Hachette's most pre-ordered audiobook ever, 47% up on previous titles in the series. It is “the benchmark” for kids' audiobooks, the judges agreed Support Audiobookish by contributing to their tip jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/audiobookish Find out more at https://audiobookish.pinecast.co This podcast is powered by Pinecast. The inspiration for the hit trilogy of DreamWorks films is rather different than you might expect. It's still about a boy named Hiccup and his dragon Toothless, but the original has more burping, farting, and Dragonese than the films dared to show -- which is odd because those are the guys what made Shrek. If you have a car and a child, you will be painfully aware that even with the very best intentions it won't be long before the interior of your vehicle is a hoarder’s paradise. Assuming of course that the hoarder in question's idea of paradise includes odd socks, miscellaneous toys, hairbands, half eaten dried fruit and flakes of excrement. I've long worried/fantasised that some of this detritus, a stray water bottle or plastic horse toy say, will somehow become lodged under the brake pedal as I drive, forcing me off or into the nearest hazard, resulting in a gloriously high fall or the satisfying and punishing brutality of ploughing straight into a wall at great speed. Preferably after careening through a home for rescue dogs or an orphanage. Anyway, it was almost certainly these completely normal thoughts which prompted Dan to pick Motor Vehicle Accidents for this week’s Top 5. Remember when we reviewed Damian Chazelle's sophomore feature LA LA LAND back in the days of Anonymous Meeg? Of course you don't. This time we thought we'd try the 36-year-old screenwriter, director and producers’ debut, WHIPLASH (Chazelle's that is, Meeg is both older and as of the time of writing has not written and directed a movie). Jonathan Kimble Simmons (JK Rowling) delivers a career defining performance as Terence Fletcher, the psychotic music teacher at the fictional Schaffer Conservatory who pushes Miles Teller's Andrew to realise his true potential as a jazz drummer through whatever means necessary. An exhilarating and thought-provoking examination of what it means to be truly exceptional at something and whether it's worth the costs, Simmons and Chazelle have together crazy created one of cinema's truly iconic villains in this blistering and breath-taking award winner. Loosely based on novels by British author Cressida Cowell, the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON franchise is 12th in the list of highest grossing animated films, racking up a cool $1.6 billion worldwide over 3 cinema releases. The movies follow the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless as a Viking and a Dragon respectively, I won't ruin it by telling you who trains whom. Amazingly one of the dads had never seen this so we were eased in gently, like a child gradually sticking a big toe into a chilly pool or that time I eased myself gently into your mothers hoop with Netflix's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON - LEGENDS, an animated series of short films continuing the plot of the first movie. GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY is set during the festival of Snoggletog and sees the Dragons suddenly incredibly horny. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it.

The best-selling author Cressida Cowell takes Clare for a nostalgic walk near Chichester in West Sussex. As well as writing the whoppingly successful ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ series, Cressida created ‘The Wizards of Once’ books which draw upon her childhood memories of roaming across the South Downs. She grew up in London but during school holidays would visit her grandparents where she found the freedom of the Sussex countryside intoxicating. Clare and Cressida walk for roughly six miles on a route known as The Trundle Loop, which begins and ends in the village of Charlton. Grid Ref for start of walk: SU 888 130 Producer: Karen Gregor
Trent Dalton explains the concept of sky whispering, Booker shortlisted author Maaza Mengiste and Cressida Cowell's charmed childhood summers on a Viking island.
Today, we round out 2016 with the incredible Cressida Cowell. You're welcome. If you're unaware, Cressida is the author of the How to Train Your Dragon series of books, upon which the massively successful Dreamworks films are based. On this episode, we talk about her childhood experiences on an uninhabited island, her own "uninhabited island" in her backyard where she writes, David Tennant, the changes made to her characters and story for the films, and how it feels to finally be moving on from Hiccup and Berk after more than 12 years.
