Co-executive produced, written, and directed by Dean DeBlois, How To Train Your Dragon is the fantasy adventure film that is a shot-for-shot live-action remake of the 2010 animated film of the same name – itself loosely based on the 2003 novel by Cressida Cowell. On the rugged isle of Berk, a Viking boy named Hiccup defies centuries of tradition by befriending a dragon named Toothless. However, when an ancient threat emerges that endangers both species, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader. We break down all things re-imagining the animated film into live-action, the cast, the look of the dragons, and how this version does or doesn't differ from its previous version.

Lara and Philip revisit the original 'Lilo & Stitch' from 2002. This was the feature animation debut for both directors, Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who would team up again on DreamWorks' 'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010). Chris Sanders had originally conceived the Stitch character in 1985, and he has gone on to voice the character in numerous appearances, beginning with the famous "Inter-Stich-als" promotional campaign for this film. He would later reprise the role for the 2025 live-action adaptation, directed by Dean Fleisher Camp. The story followed an escaped alien genetics experiment who crash lands in Hawaii. He poses as a dog and is adopted by recently orphaned sisters Lilo and Nani, but their difficult life seems to only take a turn for the worse with the addition of this new family member. How to Train Your Dragon is only the latest piece in a cultural puzzle that dates back thousands of years. How realistic are dragons, anyway?“While other places have ponies or parrots, we have…dragons.”When you think of modern day animated classics, the first projects that people tend to think of are the titans of Disney/Pixar. But under no circumstances should you sleep on the brilliant people at Dreamworks Animation who have their own share of legitimate masterpieces in the form of the Shrek franchise, last year's brilliant The Wild Robot, and the endlessly impressive How to Train Your Dragon franchise. And when it comes to the central concept of that franchise, dragons, well…the folks at Dreamworks have done it about as well as anybody ever has!Think about it. The use of dragons in storytelling far transcends the “pop culture” label. Forget movies, TV, and animation, there's literature, mythology, and something in our collective unconscious that compels us to keep returning to the familiar imagery associated with them. While we usually associate dragons with a particularly European flavor of fantasy, if you pick any culture or society, you'll probably find a dragon myth or story. That's how pervasive they are.Not only that, but they're timeless! Some of the biggest franchises of not just the last century, but this century, prominently feature dragons. Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, Game of Thrones, and yes, How to Train Your Dragon are proof that some old-fashioned concepts never really go out of style. Is it possible that with a slight evolutionary shift we could have ended up with dragons crowding our skies? And why IS the dragon concept so universal, anyway? All this and more in the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…https://youtu.be/Ww84E8udLrASUGGESTED VIEWING We based much of our discussion in this episode on the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, specifically How to Train Your Dragon, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. We hadn't seen the live action remake that's currently in theaters at the time of recording. But while we have your attention, we'd like to direct you to a nearly forgotten piece of dragon-related media. 1981's Dragonslayer is a remarkably dark piece of fantasy from a forgotten period where Disney was experimenting with more adult themes in its work. It's not quite Game of Thrones but there's plenty of gore and some sexy themes that you wouldn't expect. It's also the rare dragon flick that's genuinely scary at times!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Flying Reptiles?!?While it's natural to think in terms of the pterodactyl when thinking of real world parallels to dragons, those weren't the only flying reptiles of that long ago age. But you might also want to consider a reptile that is still flying around today, the Draco lizard, when you wonder how dragons might eventually evolve. As long as they have hollow bones….Convergent Evolution and Evolutionary BottlenecksHakeem takes us on quite a journey as he tries to explain the processes by which dragons could have evolved. But two fo the key concepts involve evolutionary bottlenecks (which likely influenced human development) and the concept of convergent evolution, which would help explain why dragons were to develop very specific and distinctive traits (check out a bunch of real world examples right here). But What About Fire-Breathing?You might think that a fire-breathing dragon is far-fetched, but we'd like to remind you of the existence of the electric eel, the bombardier beetle, and the spitting cobra, all of which have distinctive self defense mechanisms that are pretty alien to humans. So the idea that a dragon could contain methanogens in its gut that provide the fuel for a fire might not be that far-fetched after all!Read the Books!A quick reminder that the How to Train Your Dragon movies were based on a book series by Cressida Cowell. Directed by Dean DeBlois, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON returns to screen with the story of Hiccup, a young viking who doesn't fit in his own village. As the son of the king (Gerard Butler), he is expected to exhibit bravery, brutality and, most importantly, kill dragons to protect his village. But Hiccup believes there's another way and, after forming an impossible friendship with a Nightfury, attempts to chart a new path for his people. In this 1on1, we speak to DeBlois about making the jump to live action and the challenges of listening to the next generation.
Lucy Fenwick Elliott speaks to director Dean DeBlois about his new film How To Train Your Dragon. From three-time Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, the creative visionary behind DreamWorks Animation's acclaimed How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, comes a stunning live-action reimagining of the film that launched the beloved franchise. On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (BAFTA nominee Nico Parker; Dumbo, The Last of Us) and the village's quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost; Snow White and the Huntsman, Shaun of the Dead) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. Together, they must navigate the delicate path toward peace, soaring beyond the boundaries of their worlds and redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader. This week's episode of the freshly award-losing Empire Podcast sees the podteam lick their wounds after a demoralising defeat in the Best Podcast (Consumer) category at the BSMEs earlier in the week. How do they do this? By talking about movies, of course, as they discuss the week's news (a load of trailers, and a potential new James Cameron movie), reviewing Ballerina: From The World Of John Wick, Dangerous Animals, and Predator: KIller Of Killers. Oh, and they talk about actors who might be able to reprise their iconic animation roles in live-action, while James hits Helen and Chris with a question that shakes them to their very foundations. Oh, and Chris also has lovely chats with Dangerous Animals star Jai Courtney, [25:17 - 40:27 approx] and Ballerina star/all-round legend, Ian McShane, [1:00:03 - 1:14:56 approx] while Harry Stainer makes his pod debut as he talks to How To Train Your Dragon (both animation and live-action) director, Dean DeBlois. [1:38:49 - 1:55:16 approx] Enjoy.
In a special episode of the Film Stories podcast, Simon is joined by writer/director Dean DeBlois. He's the co-writer and co-director of the original How To Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch films, and after writing and directing the second and third Dragon movies, he's now done the same with the live action remake. Why did he do it? We get into that, as well as live action films that he's come close to making before. Plus, he talks about losing his father, Ireland, and what he's up to next. How To Train Your Dragon is in UK cinemas from 9th June 2025. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, this week with special guests Deirdre Molumby and Graham Day, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This week, Chris Sanders' and Dean DeBlois' How to Train Your Dragon. On the island of Berk, the Viking settlers have found themselves engaged in a war against dragons spanning literal generations. Hiccup, the son of the town chieftain, struggles to find his place in a community that doesn't value his unique strengths and attributes - he wonders whether he will even be manly enough to hunt and kill dragons. However, a chance encounter with a fallen dragon named Toothless leads Hiccup to question everything that he thinks he knows about dragons. At time of recording, it was ranked 198th on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
Just a mere two months after the "smash hit" that was Snow White, Disney is back with another live-action remake! Yay! Lily & Stitch, based on the 2002 animated classic from Dean Delois & Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon), is now out in theaters globally and is sure to break a bunch of box office records over the weekend, as this is poised to be one of the biggest films of the year, let alone the summer. Up until a month ago, I hadn't seen the original in a good decade plus. Rewatching it, I definitely found it to be pretty damn charming and surpassingly emotional, even if it's not one of my favorite Disney movies, even of that time. Does the live-action remake live up to the original? Tune in as Dustin Holden (The Rewatch Recap) returns to 2CC for a breakdown of How to Train Your Dragon, the 2010 animated fantasy movie about the bond that grows between a teenage Viking boy and a dragon. The creatures and their mannerisms that inspired Toothless's design, worries over the upcoming live-action reboot of HTTYD, the aversion to referring to wild animals that you hunt as “game,” and the physical aspect of voice acting comprise a few of the subjects that this episode dives into.Directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon stars Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Will How To Train Your Dragon's live action remake be good? After years of experiencing animated films being turned into live action films from company's like Disney, is How To Train Your Dragon doomed or can DreamWorks and Universal pull it off? Well I think there may be hope for this version of How To Train Your Dragon. Dean Deblois, the creative champion of the original Dragons trilogy, is returning to direct this new version of the story, but I'm not sure if anyone can be done to help the remake escape the shadow of the animated classic. ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐
Robert Winfree, Mark Radulich, Zachary Strobel and Chris Owen present their The Wild Robot 2024 Movie Review! The Wild Robot is a 2024 American animated science fiction survival film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown, produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders, produced by Jeff Hermann, and executive-produced by Sanders's longtime collaborative partner Dean DeBlois. It stars the voices of Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. In the film, Roz (Nyong'o), a robot shipwrecked on an uninhabited island, must adapt to her surroundings, build relationships with the local wildlife, and become the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose.Sanders first encountered the original The Wild Robot book through his daughter and years later was offered an opportunity to direct a film adaptation at DreamWorks. The film uses a hand-painted aesthetic, inspired by classic Disney animated films and the works of Hayao Miyazaki. It would be the final film to be animated entirely in-house at DreamWorks, as the studio would begin relying heavily on outside vendors after 2024. Kris Bowers composed the film's score, marking his first score for an animated film. The Wild Robot premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 27, 2024. The film received critical acclaim and has grossed $54 million against a $78 million budget.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
Netflix reveló el primer vistazo oficial de la segunda parte de la serie The Sandman. Cillian Murphy regresará para la película 28 años después. Dean DeBlois anunció que el live-action de Cómo entrenar a tu dragón concluyó su rodaje.
In October 2008, Chris Sanders was asked to take over a troublesome film with a March 2010 release date. He immediately called his old co-director Dean Deblois. Somehow, despite everything we've ever discussed on this podcast, the film they made is good. How To Train Your Dragon is the opposite of almost every film we've covered before - an instant classic that pushed the animation form and made bold calls on a tight deadline, and actually stuck the landing. But to understand how it pulled that off, we need to cover early Dreamworks, renaissance Disney, and a little picture book called The Big Bear Aircraft Company. Universal Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation's “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy with a March 14, 2025, release date. Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original animated trilogy, will be writing, directing, and producing the film. The movie will feature the friendship between a young Viking boy and a dragon he nurses back to health. This story revolves around the quest to combat humanity's prejudice against dragons, first love, and the ache of overcoming the loss of a parent. The original trilogy was well received by the audience, earning more than $1.6 billion at the box office. DeBlois is making his live-action debut with the feature, and veteran movie and theater producer Marc Platt will produce the film. Platt will be working with Adam Siegel, the president of Marc Platt Productions. One of the creative challenges facing the filmmakers is making the dragons both appealing and realistic. The budget for the film has been worked out by the studio, and the casting process is already underway.
