Ok so we know we broke your trust. We're sorry we left you alone for so long, but now were back. Truly. So to celebrate we're gonna talk about funerals. Are we celebrating? Are we mourning? Is it a black on black affair or are we wearing our florals girlies? Are we spreading ashes or is it a Gucci coffin? We also mourn J.Lo's umpteenth marriage somewhere in there. In our final interview for Season 2, Joe pulls out the big guns and surprises Jarrod with none other than the legendary Frank Oz! Frank needs no introduction, but let's give him one anyway. Frank was the original performer of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal and Sam on The Muppet Show, as well as Bert, Grover and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street. He directed The Muppets Take Manhattan, before going on to direct films like Bowfinger and Death At A Funeral. A few years ago he released the incredible documentary Muppet Guys Talking, where he teamed up with Jerry Nelson and previous To Introduce Our Guest Star guests Fran Brill, Bill Barretta and Dave Goelz! Listen as we discuss Frank's ideas for The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, teaming up with Dave Goelz for voice overs and drinking with Joan Rivers. Plus Muppets From Space wasn't great, Jarrod's getting surgery, and Frank thinks we're terrible at our jobs.
DZ-96: Ensembles 1 - What do we mean by an ensemble? How can the same story feel different when you have more characters? In the first part of our series on ensembles, Chas, Stu and Mel start by laying the groundwork for our future episodes. And we begin by asking the seemingly innocuous question: ‘what do we mean by calling a story an ensemble?' As we unpack our own assumptions, biases and thoughts, we ask (and attempt to answer) more questions: How does an ensemble differ from a single protagonist or two hander? Why does this distinction even matter? What challenges What genres inherently are ensembles? And what do we hope to learn from the series? We ice-skate over myriad films including JURASSIC PARK, ALIEN, TOP GUN vs TOP GUN: MAVERICK, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, WAR OF THE WORLDS vs INDEPENDENCE DAY, LORD OF THE RINGS vs WILLOW, OCEAN'S 11 vs OUT OF SIGHT, THIEF vs HEAT, AWAY FROM HER, DIRTY DOZEN, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, SE7EN, READY OR NOT. Look, there's heaps. We talk a lot of movies. We also talk through our lens for breaking down group dynamics: collaborative vs competitive vs combative. As always: SPOILERS ABOUND Thanks to Chris Walker for editing this episode.
Writer/director Dean Craig's film career took off in 2007 when he wrote the hit UK comedy, Death at a Funeral, starring Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes and Peter Dinklage, and directed by Frank Oz. The film won several audience awards for Best Film, and was remade in the US starring Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Martin Lawrence, and Tracy Morgan. In 2020, Craig turned his attention to directing as well as writing, with his debut film Love, Wedding, Repeat. Craig went on to write and directed The Honeymoon, with Maria Bakalova and Asim Chaudhry, and The Estate, starring Toni Collette, Anna Faris, Kathleen Turner and David Duchovny.Craig's other writing producing credits include the feature films Caffeine, A Few Best Men as well as creating the comedy series, Off the Hook with Jonathan Bailey, and Hit the Road, starring Jason Alexander. "So, you have my rhythm on the page, and then David Duchovny brings his rhythm and his attributes. And then you get this sort of hopefully wonderful collaboration between writer and director and actor. The Estate is the film that I directed most recently, and that's with Toni Colette, Anna Faris, David Duchovny, Kathleen Turner, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, Keyla Monterroso Mejia. Some really wonderful actors and I think a very fun ensemble that we were able to do there. I had a very strange year where I got to do The Honeymoon and The Estate pretty much back to back with no break in between, which was challenging, but also amazing to be one minute in Venice with these fantastic actors. Really, I can't tell you how much I loved working with Maria and Pico and Asim and Lucas. They were all totally different people and personalities, but all fantastic in their own way. And then I jumped onto the set and had those fantastic actors to work with. So it's been quite a year, I have to say."www.imdb.com/name/nm1918877/?ref_=tt_ov_dr www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgInstagram @creativeprocesspodcast

"What I tend to do is I write for the character and then the actor will come onboard. I've had some incredible talent that I've been very lucky to have been sort of collaborating with, and they'll often bring their own rhythm and their own style, and sometimes their own words to the role. So it's a collaboration, especially when you've got talent, as you mentioned, Rebel Wilson. She's so specific in the way that she does her comedy and the way she plays her role. So she brought a lot of herself to the part that we did in A Few Best Men. And David Duchovny in The Estate also did that. He came with a lot of ideas, a lot of suggestions, a lot of funny things that he wanted to do and try out.So, you have my rhythm on the page, and then David Duchovny brings his rhythm and his attributes. Happy November, Overdue Rentals family. What a lovely way to kick off the month; a brilliant chat with Writer/Director Dean Craig about his new film, The Estate. PUBLIC VERSION. Celebrated filmmaker and playwright Neil LaBute (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, NURSE BETTY, DEATH AT A FUNERAL, LAKEVIEW TERRACE, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, THE WICKER MAN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his craft in creating some of the most provocative and beautifully honest cinema and theater of the last 25 years. From growing up in a blue collar family with a father that didn't initially view filmmaking as a real career… to shooting his first feature film without any prior filmmaking experiences… to welcoming the collaboration of cast and crew when blocking a scene… to the power of a master shot and using coverage sparingly… to how he approaches scenes that require intense intimacy between actors… to the creative leeway of shooting independently despite the sacrifice of resources… to the incredible value of spending quality time with cast during pre-production… to the benefits of casting fresh faces and just how much an audience can forget that they are watching a performance… to critics and audiences projecting a character's worst behavior onto the filmmaker personally… to the making of his latest film HOUSE OF DARKNESS (in theaters September 9th and on-demand/digital September 13th)… to revealing which one of his films was actually shot to be in black and white… this conversation with one of the industry's most daring, artistic, and important voices is one that will hopefully inspire you to create the art you truly want to create rather than conforming to whatever is currently considered en vogue and safe. Hold onto your valium, and avoid falling caskets, people. This week, the sibs cover a delightful little romp, Frank Oz's 2007's 'Death at a Funeral.' Hosting an ensemble cast of the highest caliber, this movie spurred a handful of remakes -- one of which includes (Eden's boyfriend) Peter Dinklage as the same role that he plays in this film. Honorable mentions go to the amazingly physical Alan Tudyk and a crotchety Maester Aemon. POP ART, WHERE I FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE: PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNERALS UPCOMING EPISODE (to be uploaded 11/26/21): “That's not my father”. It's fall. The leaves are dying. The plants are dying. The earth is dying. It's nothing but death, death, death. But is that going to get us down? Well, we shall see. Sounds like it's time for Episode 69 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, film enthusiast, blogger, and host of the LAMBCast podcast Richard Kirkham, who has chosen as his selection the Frank Oz farce, Death at a Funeral, while I have chosen the perhaps more subtle, but no less effective Japanese film by Juzo Itami, The Funeral, two films that put the fun in funerals. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What's so funny about funerals? Why did Juzo Itami make so few films? Where have I seen that actor before? Why was Japanese comedy so oxymoronic for such a long time? What is Frank Oz's best film? Who is Itami's brother-in-law? What are the here remakes of Death at a Funeral? Where does 55 Days at Peking and Lord Jim come in? What married couple play a married couple in what film? Who was Itami married to? Funeral Director Dan O’Connell and intern James Ellison were shot and killed in Dan’s office at the O’Connell Funeral Home. Police were stumped as neither of the victims had any enemies, on the contrary, both were upstanding and beloved members of the community in Hudson WI. With no leads in the investigation, the case went cold. Until police decided to take a second look at the background of one of the most prominent people in town – respected youth pastor, Rev. Ryan Erickson.

On this episode, Oktay and Ryan examine two dark comedies that deal with death in vastly different ways: Frank Oz's 2007 "Death at a Funeral" and Paul Bartel's 1982 satire "Eating Raoul." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
Human tendency has always been to maximise prosperity and minimise adversity. In fact for most of us—if we're honest—adversity is avoided at all costs. In a less significant scenario, it is why we are tempted to quit in the middle of a run or workout. In a more significant sense, it is why, on our best days, we fail to see God at work in our difficulties. And on our worst days, we place the blame squarely on Him.But the Teacher challenges us to higher thinking. He calls us to operate in wisdom and see that, as opposed to ignoring God or blaming God in adverse circumstances, The wise consider God in adversity and prosperity—because He's in control in the midst of both. If we can get our hearts around this message today, then how we approach every moment of our lives will be filled with redemptive potential. Vanity | Death At A Funeral | Ecclesiastes 6:10-7:14

How can the middle of your film pivot so much that it pulls the rug out of your audience? Stu and Chas embark on the first of a series of explorations into the dreaded Second Act. Their first stop is midpoint reversals or shifts, a plot point bang in the middle of ACT II that changes the protagonist's goal, raises the stakes and potentially leaves your audience leaning forward and asking "How the hell is this going to end?". To get to the bottom of what makes a good midpoint shift (and whether your story needs one or not), Stu and Chas ride through DEATH AT A FUNERAL, PRISONERS, SHORT TERM 12, ALIEN, ALIENS and UP. We also drift across FULL METAL JACKET, PHILOMENA, HOW I LIVE NOW, ELYSIUM, DIE HARD and STAR WARS. Of course. Stu couldn't resist. It's not even funny anymore, is it?
