In this episode of the Bioactive Podcast, we dive deep into a lesser-known but serious condition known as Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS). Join host Dr. Riley Kirk and guests Dr. Codi Peterson and Megan Mbengue as they explore the paradox of CHS, where in some rare cases, regular cannabis use leads to severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, despite cannabis being commonly used for its anti-nausea properties. We discuss the symptoms, the prodrome phase, and the potential genetic components that may predispose individuals to CHS. The episode also highlights an ongoing study being conducted by Dr. Kirk, Dr. Peterson and Megan Mbengue with the University of California, Irvine, aimed at understanding CHS better and improving diagnosis and treatment options. Listeners will learn about the unique relief some patients find in hot showers and capsaicin cream, as well as the challenges healthcare professionals face in diagnosing this condition. We also touch on the importance of understanding the role of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in relation to CHS, and the implications for cannabis users. Whether you're a cannabis consumer, a healthcare professional, or just curious about CHS, this episode provides valuable insights and encourages participation in the ongoing research to better understand this complex syndrome. Elana's relationship with cannabis started around age 15, but in her 20s she gave up all substances to start her motherhood journey. Santa came early and brought one of my favorite teachers, Dr. Codi Peterson from California. I'm sure you'll find him as fascinating as I do for what he tells us but wait till you hear his credentials and how he spends a lot of his time. Yet it's his fervor and passion that clearly rings through and infects everyone with the curious bug. I'm really honored that he made the time for us. But that's just his generous nature. Please enjoy the musings and knowledge of one of the leading experts in the world… Dr. Codi Peterson. At approximately 20:52” Dr. Codi calls for a fact check on the numbers he recalled as AM606 which were close but no banana… he meant to say the following; AM404… And you'll find the subject of that reference here = https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30587447/ #CannabisEducation only comes after a lot of scientific exploration. Anyone who has ever tried to convince someone to change their mind over something they feel strongly about knows that it can be an impossible battle, and the only way to succeed is by taking the long view and embracing gradual change. The same can be said for changing public attitudes towards cannabis. In today's episode, we speak with JM Pedini, Development Director for NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. NORML has been representing responsible consumers since 1970, and through their efforts and activism have seen public opinion change drastically in the past fifty years. By sufficiently moving the needle on public opinion, NORML aims to legalize the responsible use of marijuana by adults, and subsequently ensure access to products that are safe, convenient, and affordable. In our conversation with JM, we discuss their work as Development Director for NORML, how their experiences with cancer led them to NORML, and how NORML supports its affiliate chapters that are doing grassroots work to affect public policy changes both locally and internationally. We discuss the changes that have taken place since NORML was founded, and why advancing public policy is reliant on understanding where your state legislature currently stands and what they're emotionally comfortable with. To hear more of JM's thoughts on the importance of small victories, how to build momentum, and patient rights, tune in today! The Cannabis Enigma podcast is a co-production of The Cannigma and Americans for Safe Access. Finding the correct dosage and combination of cannabinoid products for medical treatment is almost universally a long and expensive process of trial and error. And for the most part, patients are undertaking this journey alone and often with little guidance. This week on The Cannabis Enigma Podcast we get together with Otha Smith III, CEO, and Founder at Tetragram, a smart, digital platform that helps users get the most out of medical cannabis. We each have a unique endocannabinoid system, which makes finding the right dosage and combination of products a challenging process. There is also a lack of access to healthcare professionals, and experts in the field, to guide patients through this complicated process. There is still a long way to go in building a model that serves all patients, but in the meantime, Tetragram is providing an essential service for bridging that gap. The app helps patients make sense of their journey by simplifying the information and supplying data-driven insights into their regimen and its effects. It includes a space for journaling, an imperative aspect of improving your experience, as well as tools for determining the chemical profile of the cannabis you're using and how that correlates with your experience with medical cannabis. In our conversation with Otha, we talk about how Tetragram has been able to help its patients, how federal and state laws affect access to medical cannabis and what we can expect of government legislation in the coming years. We delve into how data can further our understanding of different types of cannabis and why standardization is desperately needed in the industry. In this behind-the-scenes episode we are joined with pharmacist Dr. Codi Peterson to talk about how modern insights into the endocannabinoid system and endocannabinoidome are affecting how pharmacists think about modern medicine. Dr. Codi Peterson is a clinical pediatric pharmacist with diverse experiences across the pharmaceutical landscape. A Duquesne University graduate, Codi was trained in an academic teaching hospital where he learned alongside a team of healthcare professionals. Building upon general pediatric hospital experience, Codi advanced to emergency and critical care pharmacy where he found a passion for improving the pharmaceutical care of complex and dynamic patients. Leveraging his hospital experience, Codi has had the opportunity to pursue his passion for educating others. As a staff lecturer at Orange County Emergency Medical Training, Codi teaches paramedics and firefighters the knowledge and skills they need to employ safe drug therapy in the prehospital setting. Codi has an innate ability to translate complex pharmacological information into digestible concepts that are applicable in the field. Codi also lectures to respiratory therapists and pharmacy students in the SoCal area, sharing his knowledge at every possible occasion. Now turning his focus and skills from western medicine to a more functional and holistic therapeutic approach, Codi is enrolled at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy where he is obtaining his MS in Medical Cannabis Science & Therapeutics. He is the President of the Medical Cannabis Student Association at UMB, an active member of the International Society of Cannabis Pharmacists, as well as the Association of Cannabinoid Specialists. With his extensive pediatric experience, Codi is poised to bring a new and needed perspective to the cannabis space. While a proponent of individual rights, home grow, and global cannabis reform, Codi also aims to defend the sanctity of medical cannabis. Codi believes cannabis IS medicine, that all patients deserve access to medicine, and that includes access to trained healthcare professionals who are able to manage complex medical patients.
