South Bend's Own Words

In the small, midwestern city of South Bend, Indiana, for members of the LGBTQ+ community, having a space for themselves is life changing. And for twenty years, people here have had that space.  Today, it's called the LGBTQ Center. As the Center approached its twentieth anniversary, Dr. Jamie Wagman and students from Saint Mary's College students preserved the history of the Center by conducting oral histories of fourteen people who were foundational to the Center's evolution.  For the Center's anniversary gala in 2025, Dr. Wagman and student Phoenix McClellan pulled clips and organized them into this presentation.  Featuring the voices of some of the many people whose time and dedication have shaped the LGBTQ Center throughout its two decades, including Rhonda Redman, Hank Mascotte, Phillip Schatz, Meghan Buell, Eli Williams, Drew Gardner, Nancy Mascotte, H.R. Jung, Michael McMillion, Krista Cox, Angela Hankins, Kathryn Kirk, J.D. Schock, Jamie Morgan, Derek McDowell, and Rhiannon Carlson. This episode was produced by Dr. Jamie Wagman and Phoenix McClellan from Saint Mary's College, by Jon Watson and Caleb Matz from the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend, and by George Garner from the Civil Rights Heritage Center.  Full transcript of this episode available here. Want to learn more about South Bend's history? I recently had the absolute pleasure of recording a conversation with Dr. Julia Blau and Dr. Jeffrey Wagman, authors of "An Introduction to Ecological Psychology: A Lawful Approach to Perceiving, Acting, and Cognising." Our conversation explored how humans actually perceive and interact with the world around them and question the traditional assumptions about psychology which suggests that we need to create mental representations of the world before we can act. Julia and Jeff shared insights on how the ecological approach transforms our understanding of human movement, and we contextualise this to enpack how we might better provide opportunities for young people to develop their abilities in sport and physical activity.  We discussed how creating rich, varied environments allows people to develop their own solutions to movement problems. This approach promotes agency, enjoyment, and ultimately better performance across many fields from sports coaching to education. Key Takeaways:Ecological psychology views perception and action as directly connected - we don't need to build internal models of the world to interact with it effectively.Variability in practice isn't something to eliminate; it's actually essential for developing adaptable skills that work in changing environments. When teaching movement skills, focus on helping people recognise when something feels right rather than precisely dictating the movements they should make.If you're interested in joining a community where we explore these concepts further, join our learning group 'The Guild of Ecological Explorers' by heading to www.thetalentequation.co.uk and clicking on the 'join a learning group' button.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

After 15 years as an in-house fundraiser, Cindy started her business doing Fractional Fundraising. Today she teaches other fundraisers how to be their own boss by starting their own Fractional Fundraising business. She's also a consultant to nonprofit consultants, helping them shake off the “shoulds,” drop the scarcity hangover from the nonprofit sector, and abundance in entrepreneurship. Key Takeaways:The concept of fractional executives allows nonprofits to benefit from the strategic oversight and hands-on support of experienced fundraisers for a fraction of the time and cost. it's important to note that hiring a fractional fundraiser is not a magic solution. It requires a long-term commitment and clear expectations from both parties to achieve the desired outcomes.Shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. By embracing innovative consulting models and hiring fractional experts, project-based workers, and specialists, organizations can optimize their in-house capacity and prevent staff burnout. As fractional fundraising continues to gain traction, it's crucial for organizations to clarify the specifics when working with a fractional executive. By embracing this growing trend and walking through the discomfort of change, nonprofits can unlock the "secret option C" and achieve sustainable growth and success. “How do we think differently about doing things in a way that allows our organizations to grow and flourish and achieve our missions without that scarcity or feeling like we have to self-sacrifice.” “We are not magic.  The way I train fractional fundraisers and the way I talk to organizations about considering fractional executive support is it's not a short-term solution. It does not happen overnight, it takes a year minimum to start to see a return.” “We're teaching them to fish, organizations need to know how to fish. But the unique thing about fractional executives is we're also kind of doing the fishing for them. Yeah, in the short to mid-term. Because sometimes the organization is literally starving and it takes time to learn how to fish.” - Cindy Wagman Reach out to Cindy Wagman at:Website: https://www.fractionalfundraising.co/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cindywagman/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cindywagman.consulting/   Ask for and receive all you want need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. On this episode we delve a little more into the underpinning science of Ecological Dynamics.I recently read 'Introduction to Ecological Psychology' written by Dr Julia Blau and Dr Jeff Wagman which was a terrific read. The book was just recently published in the summer of 2022. Had this book been available years ago, it might have saved me countless hours of confusion and frustration. While there is little talk of MMA or Grappling in this episode, it does offer a teaser of the fascinating area of ecological psychology and how we interact  and move in our world. Our discussion lends support to what many of the guest coaches and academics that have been on the podcast are telling me. That we are complex systems and we must let the body acquire skillful movement solutions trusting it to do what it is designed to do. Solve movement problems.Dr Blau and Dr Wagman also recently appeared on the Perception Action Podcast to discuss the book.  As mentioned countless times, Dr Gray's podcast is a treasure trove of contemporary sports science and any coach that wants to better understand the human system and how it learns should absolutely subscribe and listen to it. Thank you to all who support and listen. And especially all those who took time to talk to me an participate in the discussions.

As the dust settles on Week 3, host Pat Fitzmaurice (@Fitz_FF) welcomes in Sam Wagman (@Swagman95) to assess the battered value of the preseason RB1s. Should we be worried about Austin Ekeler? Can Alvin Kamara get his mojo back? Sam and Pat take stock of a bumper crop of rookie receivers, sending love letters to Drake London, Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave. Sam assesses the value of Khalil Herbert and Alexander Mattison after injuries to David Montgomery and Dalvin Cook. Sam and Pat also discuss DeVonta Smith and his Week 3 explosion. Sam explains how he first got into fantasy football and how LaDainian Tomlinson fed his addiction. Sam talks about dealing with hurricane season in Florida and whether hurricanes and oppressive summer humidity are a worthwhile trade-off for year-round golf. Is it work grabbing George Pickens in anticipation of Kenny Pickett becoming the Steelers' starting QB? Has Mark Andrews passed Travis Kelce to become the TE1? Who's more valuable -- Allen Lazard or Romeo Doubs? Sam and Pat tackle these questions and more. They also discuss the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars, and Sam names a player whose value he expects to increase in the weeks to come. Are you looking to accelerate your real estate success but have no idea how? In today's episode, we will be talking about my absolute favorite kind of real estate investing, multifamily. And we will also be deep-diving into mentorships, and coaching, what that entails, and what it looks like. Michael brings solid experience with nearly every stage of residential real estate investing: from finding off-market discount properties, planning, and managing renovation, determining the proper exit strategy, refinance or rent, marketing, and listing the properties as a retail agent. In a few short years, he was able to leverage the sales of Fix and Flip properties into a portfolio of smaller multi-family properties and currently owns 8 units. Prior to real estate, Michael worked as a sales professional in Tel Aviv, Israel for a software company.
