Judge Neil Gorsuch, the president’s nominee to the Supreme Court, calls himself an originalist. But what does that mean? "Originalism proclaims that the Constitution should be interpreted according to how it was understood at the time of its ratification in 1789 and similarly for amendments, starting in 1791. Policy arguments and the consequences of different interpretations simply do not matter. For originalists, the Constitution is not alive; it is dead, static." Washington Post Guest Bob Woodburn will speak with me about the roots of Originalism, how it differs from Strict Constructionism, and what difference either makes to matters of law in 2017. We will also discuss contradictions between what Justices may say they are, and how they vote on matters like the Citizens United decision. Tom McCain recently was named the new Executive Director of Peachtree NORML. Peachtree NORML, along with other organizations, is one of the leading voices in Georgia against Cannabis Prohibition. Tom McCain's leadership appointment is important because Tom is a retired Deputy Sheriff and Veteran. He retired as the Chief Deputy of Johnson County and holds a specialized Senior Deputy Certification. An Air Force Veteran retiring as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. After his retirement from law enforcement, Tom was reintroduced to cannabis as a way to deal with chronic back pain. He began doing research about cannabis and used himself as a test patient. He is illegally healed and has been able to stop the usage of numerous pharmaceuticals prescribed by the Veterans Administration. Once Tom discovered that the Prohibition of Cannabis was based on racial bias and corporate greed, he got active in the movement to reform Georgia’s Draconian marijuana laws. “I have made it my mission to end cannabis prohibition in Georgia.”. In our segment, POWER TO THE PEOPLE we give information about opportunities for activists. Are there events we should not promote? Is counter activism a good thing? Can we be peaceful and powerful in the face of opposing activists? This question was raised by Portland, OR mayor Wheeler after the murders of two good samaritans who came to the aid of two dark skinned teenage girls, one wearing a hijab. Given the pain and public outcry after this incindent, he is asking that two events be canceled: the first is the TRUMP FREE SPEECH RALLY scheduled for Sunday, June 4th; and the second is the "March Against Sharia" scheduled for June 10th. Both events are planned in a plaza that is managed by the U.S. government, which offers permits for demonstrations. Does our first amendment right to free speech trump our common decency approach to grief and mourning? Can we exercise our right to free speech and our right to free counter speech peacefully? We will begin with our Power to the People segment, sharing opportunities for engagement. Then we will spend some time ron the question: activism for or activism against? Is there a danger in activism AGAINST? The March Against Monsanto was against many contemporary agribusiness practices, but it was also FOR many things: the bees, our health, food without fear of consequences. AGAINST can be powerful but can it be compassionate? "March for Women, March for Science, March for Truth: activism FOR is powerful, but can it be compassionate? Is there power in looking beyond what we fear in order to see what it is we hope for in our country? In our world? Let’s talk! A long planned TAX MARCH will occur in DC and across the country this Saturday, April 15, 2017 HWhy We March: President Trump is the first president or major-party presidential candidate in four decades to refuse to release his tax returns to the public. We march to demand that the president release his returns, as he has repeatedly promised, but failed, to do. We march because it is in the best interest of the American people to know what financial entanglements and conflicts of interest our leaders have. Because we need to know if the president is personally profiting from the policies he is proposing. And because we want know if he has contributed his fair share of taxes. We march because we will not stand by while the rich and the powerful govern this country guided only by their personal best interests, and not the best interests of the American people as a whole. Read more at https://taxmarch.org/principles-dc-march/ One of the founding goals of Coffee Party USA was Tax Reform. We consider the system broken, not bad. Big money has used lobby power and campaign contributors to escape financial reponsibility for being a part of the American Village. We can begin this process in advance of the current budget actions by asking our presidnet take the first step. Guitar virtuoso and rock legend, Steve Hackett (formerly of Genesis), is set to release his latest album ‘The Night Siren’ on March 24th, 2017 through InsideOut Music (Sony). As implied in the title, ‘The Night Siren’ is a wake-up call… the warning of a siren sounding in this era of strife and division. I recently hung out with Steve on the Cruise to the Edge 2017 and we discussed what inspired him to make this album and the messages he hopes to reach people with. The album's first track 'Behind the Smoke' is about the refugee crisis. Not just now but in history as well. Steve, like many of us, is a descendant of refugees as his grandparents had to flee Poland in the late 1800's. Journalism and Activism: the witness and the witnessed. In this day and age the world, and especially the online world, is awash in communication. The vast majority of this communication, however, is not news and especially not journalism. (If you did any of the homework reading you will recognise this quote from AmericanPressInstitute.ORG). Guest journalist Cheryl Hatch will help us understand the difference. Full disclosure. Cheryl and I have known each other for over 20 years. She was my husband’s journalism student. We met when she returned from Iraqi Kurdistan during Desert Storm. I have had the pleasure of witnessing Cheryl’s career evolve. Cheryl is just back from a trip (as a journalist) to Standing Rock and she and I will be attending the Women’s Rally in Washington DC on January 21st. She will attend as a journalist. I will attend as an activist. ****** Follow Lunch with Louden on Facebook Follow Coffee Party USA on Facebook and visit our Web Site Become a BE THE MEDIA supporter by becoming an annual member or a monthly sustaining member.

"We all learned in grade school that Abraham Lincoln “saved the Union.” But, in saving our nation, did he destroy our Constitution? He did some pretty extreme things, after all, from suspending habeas corpus to signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Were his actions constitutionally justified, or not? We’ll talk to Daniel Farber, who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley, and who presented this year’s R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture at Lincoln Memorial University’s Duncan School of Law." Your Weekly Constitutional is hosted by Constitutional Law Professor Stewart Harris. Stewart teaches Constitutional Law at the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) in Grundy, Virginia. On this episode of Conscious Bridge Radio, Mark Gilbert presents some of the best moments from the show from the year 2016. The retrospective begins and ends with discussions of Donald Trump. From the January program, Spiral Dynamics co-author Don Beck surprises us by describing how Trump might be the "transitional" leader that we may be looking for at this point in our evolution. In a discussion that foretells the election, Beck explains why he was impressed with Trump. The program ends with excerpts from our last regular program of the year featuring spiritual teachers Gregory Toole and Barbara Bue discussing what Trump, along with each of us, can do to heal the divisiveness in our country. Other excerpts include Arun Gandhi discussing what his grandfather meant by the phrase "be the change", evolutionary teacher Michael Dowd describing why we are facing potential extinction and what we can do about it and Lee Eric Smith of the website "A Message From God" offers what exactly he means by "talking to God" and how such messages are available to all of us. All in all, it's a great opportunity to listen some of the best moments from the past year. Disagreeing about what is right and good (or wrong and bad) can be challenging. Our culture has evolved to reward winners and dismiss losers. Our biology rewards us with dopamine when we are right - and then we want more. Is it any wonder that we all want to be “right” and on the winning team? But relationships are not a game to count the number of times we are right and declare a winner. What is the actual cost to our relationships when we fall into the right/wrong game? And how can we step out of the right/wrong paradigm to explore what’s really important to - and enlivens - us all? Join us as we discuss these questions more. www.livingroomconversations.og Thursday 3:00 PM Eastern/Noon Pacific on the Coffee Party USA Radio Network

On this episode of Conscious Bridge Radio, host Mark Gilbert offers a post election 2016 edition asking the question "what can Trump or any of us do to heal our divisiveness?" The United States is experiencing tremendous political polarization and divisiveness on major issues facing the country. Most of us agree something must be done....but what? To assist each of us in considering that question, Gilbert offers two discussions....one with a couple of his "mastermind" group friends and another one with spiritual teachers Barbara Bue and Gregory Toole. They are interesting takes on the question and are sure to give you some thoughts on what not only President-elect Trump can do but what each of us can do to address the issue. On this episode of Conscious Bridge Radio, host Mark Gilbert offers a special election 2016 edition themed on the issue of it being "a time to vote and a time to heal?" There are three major points discussed on this program. First is the important need to vote in this election. This includes the talk of many about not voting, the sense of some that there is no real difference in the major candidates, and throwing votes towards the third party candidates. Secondly is a look at how this election is evolving and changing our country....which leads to the final point -- how are we going to come together as a people after the election? The topic of muslim refugees and national security has been a point of controversy and discussion during this election. This conversation touches on some of our core values as individuals and as a nation. Our need to balance constitutional rights and generosity with prudence. Balancing freedom and security- safety and care for other people whose lives are at risk due to political, ethnic and religious conflict. How can we offer assistance? How can we protect ourselves? Our group of six participants address these questions and learn from one another. New ideas and possible solutions get brought to light while discovering they have more common ground than initially thought. Living Room Conversations is an open-source project exploring the power of revitalized discourse in America. It provides a platform for people to come together through social networks and engage in self-guided conversations about specific topics. These conversations foster new relationships and often reveal common ground. Click here(http://www.livingroomconversations.org) to learn more and find over 40 pre-prepared conversation materials. "Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence? Not just the “all men are created equal” stuff - have you read the whole thing? If you have, then you know that most of the Declaration is simply a list of complaints, bad things that the colonists said that the king was doing. And perhaps you’ve noticed that one of those complaints accused King George III of encouraging “domestic insurrections?” Really? What insurrections? And by whom? Rob Parkinson of Binghamton University will tell us all about it." Your Weekly Constitutional is hosted by Constitutional Law Professor Stewart Harris. On this episode of Conscious Bridge Radio, host Mark Gilbert asks us to consider the question "what is the America we would like to see and experience?" And from that we move on to thinking on what is the greater world we would like to live in? These questions are a bridge to Gilbert discussing the Coffee Party USA's current Coffee Party Talks program, his 2012 book Be Yourself Evolving the World Through Personal Empowerment, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and a whole lot more! Our constitution guarantees our freedom to express our religion. But what happens when our religious beliefs impact others in society? How can we interact respectfully in spite of our different belief systems? Most recently, the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was the law of the land. But what about traditionalists whose creed says that it is a sin? This conversation is about the line between individual rights and community values…plus the role of government. Please join us on Thursday at 3:00 PM EDT/noon PST on Coffee Party Radio.

"There are lots of bad guys out there. And lots of people who could be bad guys. And other guys . . . well, we're not so sure about them. But can the President simply make a list, sit down in his big chair in the Oval Office, and decide which of these alleged bad guys to kill? We speak with David Adler, the Director of the Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State University, an expert on presidential power. David takes us on a fascinating journey, concentrating on the way executive power has dramatically increased during and after the Cold War, and especially after 9/11. You'll want to listen to this one. In the meantime, don't make the President mad." Your Weekly Constitutional is hosted by Constitutional Law Professor Stewart Harris. Stewart teaches Constitutional Law at the Appalachian School of Law (ASL) in Grundy, Virginia. In 2011, Professor Harris created a public radio show, Your Weekly Constitutional, which is produced at WETS-FM, the NPR affiliate in Johnson City, Tennessee, and syndicated nationally. YWC is underwritten by the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution at Montpelier, the historic home of the Father of the Constitution, James Madison. Please listen on Friday 3:00 PM EDT/Noon PST on Coffee Party Radio
What would happen if we had a National Basic Income (NBI)? Every citizen of the country is guaranteed to receive money, regardless of circumstances. This idea has been around for a few decades as a potential solution to ending poverty. It has also been championed as a way to reduce social programs and government bureaucracy. In the spring of 2016, Switzerland voted down a referendum on this, but Finland is drafting a plan which will be presented via referendum in late 2016. While some fear automation will shrink available jobs, others see NBI as a way to stimulate the economy. We invite you to engage in a little dreaming about what our future could be. Many of us are caught up in the trap of identifying with our ego and believing that our lives are about controlling the world "out there". Spiritual teacher Loch Kelly offers practical tools to awaken us from this pattern so we can create more freedom in our lives. On this episode of Conscious Bridge Radio, host Mark Gilbert interviews Kelly about his new book, Shift into Freedom - The Science and Practice of Open-hearted Awareness. They discuss how Kelly came to write this book and how its tools can be useful for anyone know matter what their beliefs---religious, spiritual, agnostic or atheist. Kelly guides us all in a couple of quick processes that provide "glimpses" of "awake awareness" and allows us to know how we can all awaken to a new sense of spiritual freedom from which we can live our lives in joy, love and service. You won't be disappointed in listening in on this captivating conversation! Gilbert is the author of four books including Be Yourself Evolving the World Through Personal Empowerment and Our Spiritual Evolution. "Executive Orders have been in the news lately. Some people claim that President Obama goes too far with his Orders. Others are more concerned about the recent statement by Republican candidate Donald Trump that he would use his Executive Orders to limit Muslim immigration to the United States. Homelessness in America is a “wicked problem” that reminds us daily of our failure to be our best. How do we explain to children the presence of hungry, cold, neglected and often mentally ill men women and children on our streets in the midst of plenty? Living Room Conversations are one opportunity to begin to build community and better understand the challenges and opportunities surrounding this problem. If we gather neighbors, business owners, health care workers, police, government officials, homeless people and their families in conversation might we build trust and begin to explore opportunities to do better? Conversations are admittedly only a starting point, but isn’t it time to start? Please listen on Coffee Party Radio Thursday 3:00 PM EDT/Noon PST This interview is part of the American Citizens Summit, a free online event featuring respected political leaders, grassroots visionaries, business pioneers, change agents and advocates who are leading the way to actualize the full power of democracy by building bridges across divides. We all love our children and want our community to be safe. We have seen tragedy in our communities and want that to end. We all want law enforcement to be fair. And we want police to be able to do their job in a manner that is safe for them and the community. Let’s start with this as a given. Over the last year, policing has become a major point of discussion as violence crossing racial lines has provoked racial tensions. Too often, the conversation remains paralyzed in fear or anger - with people unable to share deeply considered feelings and perspectives. We're hoping this conversation may contribute to a thoughtful exploration on this question. Please join us on Thursday at 3:00 PM EDT/Noon PST for an important Living Room Conversation on Coffee Party Radio.
