What if there were another way to focus that is not stressful or exhausting? And what if this other way of effortless focus and flow gave us more energy and tapped us into an inherent sense of clarity, compassion, and wholeness?  Three Kinds of Effortless FlowIn this episode of the Effortless Mindfulness podcast, Loch Kelly introduces us to different types of awareness and uncovers a remarkable and innate human capacity called Effortless Focus. In conventional mindfulness and daily life we try to "pay attention” and “concentrate" by using narrow attention like a flashlight. With effortless focus we learn a unique Indo-Tibetan approach to open awareness and then upgrade to a connected flow that most of us know. Loch introduces three types of flow that we can learn to access any time of the day. They're called absorbed flow, panoramic flow, and awake loving flow. Each of these has its own unique qualities to help you transcend chronic attentional issues like burnout, ADHD, workaholism, overthinking, OCD, hyper stress, low energy, and an inability to concentrate. And most importantly, these levels of flow are not just peak experiences but a new way of relating and creating. They're stable dimensions of your own Self that can become your new normal. In this episode, you'll learn what it means to shift out of your limited chattering mind and live from the zone of Effortless Focus.Effortless Focus Mindful Glimpse The episode features Loch offering a guided practice called “Effortless Focus.” These mindful glimpses serve as invaluable tools for experiencing ways to access the awake consciousness that is already here within all of usYou can now explore all of Loch Kelly's practices and teachings on the new Mindful Glimpses app, found at https://lochkelly.org/mindful-glimpses. In this episode, Loch introduces the map and practices of non-dual presence. A lot of us have heard about non-duality before. But how many of us have a truly embodied experience of this profound and transformative dimension of our own consciousness? Nondual Presence MapIn Loch's model of The Five Levels of Mind, he refers to non-dual presence as the Fourth Level of Mind — Unity Mind. Throughout the episode, Loch leads you through an experiential inquiry into the nature of both bliss and emptiness and how non-dual presence represents the life-changing union of these two. We all like peak experiences of bliss. But what if the natural experience of our body on a fundamental level was a subtle pervasive Bliss. In this episode, you'll get answers to fundamental questions like: What does non-dual presence feel like? How can you begin to embody this for yourself? How is it different from Subtle Energy, Pure Awareness, and the Mindful Witness? And most importantly, how can you access non-dual presence in your own life to foster a new baseline of unconditional love and Self Leadership.Glimpse & Nondual MeditationThe episode features Loch offering a guided practice and nondual meditation called “Awake-Awareness Energy Embodied.” These mindful glimpses serve as invaluable tools for experiencing ways to access the awake consciousness that is already here within all of us.You can now explore all of Loch Kelly's practices and teachings on the new Mindful Glimpses app, found at https://lochkelly.org/mindful-glimpses. The Stages of Mindfulness: Beyond the Meditator to Living from Effortless Mindfulness

In this episode, Loch explores the progressive stages of mindfulness. This contrasts with common definitions of mindfulness which only feature the first stages of concentration and witnessing. In addition, Loch introduces a nuanced map of consciousness which includes important distinctions and levels. In this model,  which is based on the Indo-Tibetan approach, mindfulness begins similarly with calm abiding—focusing attention on one object as the main type of awareness. Here the goal is to settle the mind, nervous system, and body. In this method we use a narrow beam of attention, like a flashlight trained on a single object. To illustrate, Loch talks about the neuroscience research that shows how this represses the default mode of mind-wandering and creates a calm state by using the task mode for a simple task. This creates a temporary calm during meditation but is not an essential calm that we can live from.As we progress on the path of mindfulness, we gain the first insight into the changing contents of thoughts, feelings, sensations, and mind objects. In the process we shift into the mindful witness, where the flashlight of awareness shifts from narrow to wide beam or street light. And then the second insight dawns on us that neither our mind nor our self sense is solid. In the next step, we make the pivotal shift to turn awareness around to see what is aware once we are no longer operating from the self-centered and thought-based sense of “me.” Thus we enter into the advanced stages of mindfulness found in Indo-Tibetan and Zen traditions. This insight represents a new foundation of mind and identity as we become mindful of Mind or aware of Awareness. Then, once we discover that this wordless awareness is knowing, the next insight is that there is no separation between empty awareness and the contents or forms that arise. This nondual mindfulness—often called Same Taste—is mindful of the interdependence of life. The next stage of mindfulness Loch talks about is Effortless Mindfulness, also known as bodhicitta or non-meditation in the mahamudra tradition. Loch proposes that this represents a potential next level of human development. A mindfulness from awake loving flow that brings together wisdom, safety, connection, clarity and unconditional love. You can now explore all of Loch Kelly's practices and teachings on the new Mindful Glimpses app, found at https://lochkelly.org/mindful-glimpses. In this episode, Loch unpacks how his unique approach to awakening fuses two powerful and transformative systems—Effortless Mindfulness (EM) and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Each of these systems asserts that our true Self is ever-present and inherent. We don't need to create or develop anything to realize our true nature. In Effortless Mindfulness, we uncover this ever-present Self (aka the IFS Self) directly. Each of these systems is the missing link for the other. EM+IFS solves the psychological problem of trying to develop a strong and kind ego and also the Buddhist problem of calling the ego an illusion with the goal of “no self.” IFS ExercisesIn this episode Loch leads us through powerful IFS exercises designed to evoke the IFS Self and the shift to Self Leadership, where the ego is part of the team and neither an enemy nor an illusion. What kind of IFS exercises and parts work therapy help us to become aware of our sub-personalities? And what role does learning the markers of the 8 c's of the IFS Self play in living from awake loving consciousness? Loch explains how doing IFS exercises like parts mapping and healing with parts therapy is essential not only to reduce our suffering but for accessing our true nature. What does Self leadership as the next stage of human development look like in the world in and as you and me? How do we consistently make decisions based on wisdom and love instead of our egos or our protective parts? EM and IFS offer us a model for recognizing the interdependence of all our parts, so that we can truly live from a ground of awake loving flow.[Want to learn more about IFS and parts work? In this episode, Loch introduces you to the essential shift in the Effortless Mindfulness Awakening Process (EMAP)—Awake Aware Mind. He addresses the often elusive but essential question: What is it like to directly experience our already Awake Mind? The goal in EMAP is not a sustained experience. Instead, we aim for an orientation, recognition, and realization of this already awake and ever-present dimension of our own consciousness. The key is to shift out of the thought-based knowing of “I think therefore I am” by having  awareness rest back and know itself as both the subject and object of knowing. From this spacious and pervasive way of simply being, you are aware of pure awareness—as what knows directly—without needing to refer back to thought for a second opinion. To help facilitate this shift, Loch leads you through three powerful experiential inquiries and glimpses.Mindful Glimpses:(00:13:33)-Embodied awareness to effortless awareness (00:58:03)-Awareness of senses to awareness of awareness (01:33:43)-Finding awake awareness between your thoughtsIn the first Glimpse, you'll traverse everyday mind into the conventional mindful witness. From here, you'll attend to the contents of body and brain and then turn awareness around to look through the meditator and discover Awake Aware Mind. Your Awake Mind is free from fear, worry, and shame and welcomes all positive and negative experiences as waves on the ocean of our awake humanity. In the second Glimpse, you'll unhook from thinking and move through the doorways of seeing and then hearing, decentering your normal head-centered awareness. Then you'll move into hearing and the auditory field, mingling awareness with space so that awake space is both outside and within all of life. And in the final Glimpse, Loch guides you into an inquiry to help you discover and identify the ever-subtle awareness of awareness between thoughts and words. This is a simple yet profound practice recommended by the Dalai Lama. You can now explore all of Loch Kelly's practices and teachings on the new Mindful Glimpses app, found at https://lochkelly.org/mindful-glimpses. What Are the Obstacles to Awakening?

Effortless Mindfulness with Loch Kelly

In this podcast episode, Loch explores the three main obstacles to awakening. As part of the Effortless Mindfulness Awakening Process, he emphasizes the importance of having a map, a method, and markers to help us understand where we are on the path at any given time. In Effortless Mindfulness, that map is called the Five Levels of Mind, and Loch spends time illuminating the different levels. He then goes on to pinpoint the three biggest obstacles that prevent us from truly awakening to and abiding in the deeper levels of our being. The Three Main ObstaclesThe first obstacle to awakening is that many people have an incomplete map of the awakening process. That means people often start on the path of awakening but don't always have the necessary tools to follow through. The second obstacle to awakening is our confusion around what to do with our common experience of ego identity. Many psychologies try to balance and strengthen our ego while many meditation systems ask us to see the ego as an illusion that's unnecessary. Loch leads us in a glimpse to appreciate our “ego” or “problem solve” identity and then shift out of it as the center but to include it as a helpful part of us. And the third major obstacle to awakening is spiritual bypassing and getting lost in the mistaken assumption that delightful spiritual experiences of pure awareness, no self, peace, and ecstasy are the end point of awakening. Instead, Loch emphasizes an awake, embodied, and heart-based connection to the community of life.Loch unpacks these obstacles in depth. He stresses the importance of thanking and acknowledging all the parts of oneself, including protectors and exiles. He also highlights why off-the-cushion practices and entering flow are essential to integrating awakening into daily life, promoting a sense of peace, well-being, and optimal functioning.Guided Glimpse Practice(00:22:02) The episode features Loch offering a guided glimpse practice called “The Everyday Problem Solver Is the Obstacle.” These mindful glimpses serve as invaluable tools for experiencing ways to access the awake consciousness that is already here within all of us. You can now explore all of Loch Kelly's practices and teachings on the new Mindful Glimpses app, found at https://lochkelly.org/mindful-glimpses. We chat about two topics she's passionate about: parts journaling and dating. (Our dating convo begins at 15:50) First, Kylie shares tips on connecting to our parts through journaling. Her book, IFS Daily Parts Journal, offers a structured method which she first developed as her own self-care tool. We explore how journaling can be a valuable way to check in with our parts, unblend, and create inner openness, and why it isn't always as easy as it seems. Then we switch gears to explore dating through an IFS lens. Sharing personal insights from her experience in the dating scene, she shares how dating presents opportunities to notice trailheads, meet new parts, and practice Self leadership.  We discuss: Journaling with our parts can be like having a self-led therapist, helping us track, check in, and create openness towards different parts of ourselves. Resistance to journaling or parts work is common, and it's helpful to approach these resistances with curiosity and compassion. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to IFS practices; journaling, singing, art, and even walking can be ways to connect with parts. Dating offers a unique opportunity to explore our parts, activating trailheads that can lead to greater self-understanding and healing. Kylie's approach to dating with IFS emphasizes self-love, curiosity, and the importance of building internal relationships before seeking external connections. The concept of trusting one's system and allowing for natural growth and change in relationships is key to healing through IFS. Kylie will be presenting at the 2024 IFS Annual Conference in a session titled: Parts Journaling: Develop The Habit of Checking in With Your Parts. About Kylie Feller: Kylie is a Canadian clinical counselor, digital nomad, and Level 3 Certified IFS Therapist. She has personally experienced the healing power of IFS and is passionate about helping others on their self-healing journeys. In her new graphic memoir, Past Tense, Sacha brings readers along on her deeply personal, years-long journey to heal trauma, uncover legacy burdens, and connect to her true Self. She began illustrating her IFS and therapy experience privately in her sketchbooks. Those evolved into webcomics vividly depicting her inner system and healing process which she shared with the world through social media, and now in her new graphic memoir.  We discuss: How her private therapy session sketches grew into webcomics and a book How IFS can shift our inner world and multi-generational family dynamics Breaking the chain of legacy burdens for her daughter  Sharing her family members' private details and stories in her comics Using comics to visually represent the complexity of therapy and inner healing, making the IFS therapy process more tangible, relatable, and approachable for many people One of my favorite quotes from this episode: "How many of us carry shame or trauma that isn't even ours to begin with?   My guest today is Mary Kruger, an IFS lead trainer and therapist specializing in addiction and eating disorders. Mary helped develop the IFS Level 2 training for addiction recovery and treatment. This episode is a re-release from Season 2. Episode Summary: In this episode Mary shares her own story of finding IFS and her personal experience of the healing power of its integration with the 12-step model. We explore: How can we shift the way we approach addiction, eating disorders, and shame? Have traditional approaches to addiction recovery, such as AA or 12-step programs, left us demonizing our behaviors rather than understanding them?  What happens when we stop viewing addiction as a "moral failure" or "genetic defect" and instead see it as a system out of balance  What role does shame play in maintaining cycles of addiction, and how can IFS help us unburden that shame?  How can we learn to work with, not against, our addictive parts?  Can group work enhance healing by reducing shame and helping us feel connected to others with similar struggles?  One of my favorite quotes from the episode: "What if we stopped demonizing our addictive behaviors and instead asked, 'What are they trying to teach us?' When we befriend the parts of us that struggle, we unlock the door to true healing."  Mary will host a workshop on October 10 and 11, 2024 with Life Architect on working with polarized parts. In this episode, Loch introduces a pillar of the Effortless Mindfulness model called the Five Levels of Mind. He refers to these five levels as Everyday Mind, Subtle Mind, Awake Aware Mind, Unity Mind, and Heartmind. In this show, Loch explores and unpacks how the first two levels of mind involve working with the body and mind to calm and stabilize them. The next three levels of mind make up a second tier, so to speak, providing access to a deeper sense of fundamental well-being, compassion and wisdom. Effortless Mindfulness really begins with the shift into the awake aware mind—an awareness-based way of knowing that exists prior to thought and can use thought as needed. Then the next two levels allow us to embody and live from a more connected feeling of flow. This episode provides tools, tips, and insights for how you can tune into your already awake mind, shift through the deeper levels of mind, and navigate your own consciousness with greater compassion, clarity, and loving flow. You can join Loch Kelly for a special FREE live workshop.3 Common Obstacles to Awakening That Are Impeding Your Meditation PracticeAnd How to Break Through to the Next Level with Compassion and Flow>> Register for the live workshopEvery great meditative tradition the world over has major maps of the significant steps or stages in meditation as their tradition has come to understand and practice them. The institute is dedicated to teaching direct methods to access awake awareness, living from a flow state, nondual mindfulness, and heart mindfulness.  We discuss the concept of effortless mindfulness and how it differs from conventional mindfulness. Loch shares his journey toward mindfulness and how his father's passing led him to explore and develop effortless mindfulness. Loch provides a simple five-minute practice to help listeners access this more spacious awareness. The conversation also covers the importance of acknowledging the different parts that makeup who we are and how being aware of these parts can help us make more conscious choices. It's literally just like opening up to find a dimension that's subtler and more spacious, but more pervasive and more interconnected. And when we find that sense of being, then that's the goal of what we're looking for because there's a sense of wellbeing, bliss, and clarity that's already here within us.” - Loch (11:10) Our Guest Loch Kelly, M.Div., LCSW, is an award-winning author, psychotherapist, and meditation expert. "Time is the greatest concept of all, hiding the dynamic, open nature of experience under the garments of the concepts past, present, and future," wrote Princeton astrophysics professor Piet Hut. Where do quantum physics and the great wisdom traditions meet? Here in the Now. The "Now" in Tibetan Buddhism is translated as "The timeless awareness that includes the three relative times of past, present and future." But the Now is not the present moment. We can not live in the present moment as moments are here and gone like the tick-tock of a clock, here-gone-here-gone. However, we can learn to shift into the eternal Now, which is always here as a ground that is both infinite and intimate.Being here and now provides a doorway to an awake, open-hearted awareness that can be accessed experientially at any time. It is a field of compassion and well-being from which you can respond rather than react and experience flow states. In this conversation, author, psychotherapist, and meditation teacher Loch Kelly and Princeton Professor and Astrophysicist Piet Hut explore everything from quantum mechanics, the theory of relativity, nonduality, the nature of reality, and consciousness. At the end of the discussion, Loch provides a glimpse meditation to help you experientially shift your awareness into the timeless, boundless Now. "Time is the greatest concept of all, hiding the dynamic, open nature of experience under the garments of the concepts past, present, and future," wrote Princeton astrophysics professor Piet Hut. Where do quantum physics and the great wisdom traditions meet? In this episode, Loch Kelly shares the Effortless Mindfulness Awakening Training (EMAT) approach to shifting into the next stage of human development. EMAT offers a unique way to bring together direct path awakening consciousness with contemporary neuroscience and psychology. While most psychological practices organize around a thought-based small-self or “parts-based identity,” EMAT integrates nondual mindfulness to help shift out of the small-self identity and into the already installed awake consciousness. After the talk Loch offers a guided micro-meditation.
