In this episode of Capital for Good we speak with Maria Ressa, the globally celebrated free speech champion, journalist, entrepreneur, dissident, and winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her work “to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” Ressa is a co-founder of Rappler, one of the most influential media platforms in the Philippines. For her reporting on the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, Ressa was threatened, arrested, tried, and convicted of cyberlibel, facing over one hundred years imprisonment. Today Duterte has been arrested by the International Criminal Court and awaits trial in the Hague, Ressa has been cleared of nearly all charges, and her work as a journalist and activist continues as she warns of the very real world challenges of online disinformation. We begin with Ressa's earliest days in the United States, when her family immigrated in 1973 after martial law had been declared in the Philippines. We discuss the importance of her education in those years, in elementary, high school, and at Princeton, and the support of those who “taught her to keep learning,” lessons that would inform her pursuit of journalism when she returned to the Philippines. “I fell into journalism,” Ressa says, as she found it to be critical “connective tissue between government and the people,” and a way to “hold power to account.” She and three fellow journalists launched Rappler in 2012; by 2016, when Duterte was elected President, Ressa found herself persecuted by the government — threatened, arrested, tried and sentenced to over one hundred years in prison — for reporting on its corrupt and increasingly authoritarian practices. We discuss Ressa's fight for her rights “as a journalist and a citizen” and her realization that technology could accelerate misinformation, distort truth, and blur the boundaries between the virtual and real world. “A lie told a million times becomes a fact,” she says. Ressa chronicles these experiences in her 2022 memoir and call-to-arms How to Stand up to a Dictator: The Fight for our Future. Ressa cautions about the dangers of and linkages between the weaponization of algorithmically driven disinformation — and illiberalism worldwide. “Without facts you can't have truth, and without truth you can't have trust. The only government that exists without trust is a dictatorship: you can't have journalism or democracy.” In her own work, she and Rappler are building upon the Matrix protocol, a secure, open-source decentralized platform that has the potential to become a global independent news distribution outlet.  Although she is deeply concerned — “I feel like Cassandra and Sisyphus combined,” she says – Ressa also maintains her faith in the power of people to come together for change. “It's all about community,” she explains. “We are standing on the rubble of the world that was; we need to take responsibility for the world we want. We can build a world that is more just, more equitable, more sustainable; we can do this if we decide to come together, to demand better.” Thanks for Listening! Today we talk with members of the organizing collective of the Coalition for Action in Higher Education, or CAHE, about their second National Day of Action, taking place on Thursday, April 17. The Day of Action is a call for free higher education in every meaning of that term. CAHE calls for “the elimination of all existing student debt, making all public colleges and universities tuition-free, and ensuring that our colleges and universities remain sites of robust free thinking about the world we live in and the world we want.”We talk about the genesis of this group, and the gap it seeks to fill at the intersection of all of these interests, with Palestine squarely at the center. CAHE is thus a critical hub for activism that addresses each of the major points of attack on education coming from the Trump administration. Karim Mattar is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  A descendant of survivors of the Palestinian Nakba of 1948, he works at the intersection of Palestine studies, the humanities, and higher education.  He is currently at work on two book projects.  The Ethics of Affiliation seeks to develop a curriculum and a public pedagogy of truth and reconciliation in historic Palestine, focusing on the areas of education, culture, public institutions, civil society, and law.  Reflections on Palestine: Exile, Privilege, Responsibility interweaves personal experience, family history, cultural critique, and political analysis to tell a multigenerational, transcontinental story of responsibility to the oppressed.  Also a dedicated community organizer, Karim works at the local, state, and national levels to enhance public awareness and understanding of Palestinian literature, history, and politics and to advocate for Palestinian liberation.  Karim received his D.Phil. in English at the University of Oxford in 2013, and writes and teaches more broadly on comparative Middle Eastern literatures and cultures, the history of the novel, media and technology, and critical theory.Bill V. Mullen is Professor Emeritus of American Studies at Purdue.  He is the author of several books including most recently We Charge Genocide! American Fascism and the Rule of Law (Fordham University Press) and (with Jeanelle Hope) The Black Antifascist Tradition Fighting Back from Anti-Lynching to Abolition (Haymarket Books).  He is a member of Purdue AAUP and the organizing collective for the Coalition for Action in Higher Education.  He is also a member of Writers Against the War on Gaza.Jennifer Ruth is a professor of film studies at Portland State University. Once again, we are grateful for the miracle of modern technology that allowed us to record this episode from two locations. Chris was recovering from the flu and, to keep Emily healthy, we recorded over Zoom. In our Just Read segment, we talk about nine very different books in a variety of genres: epic poetry, memoir, biography, and novels, including a graphic novel. Both Cougars finished THE BOOKBINDER by Pip Williams, our last readalong in our year of reading Books About Books. Chris finally finished THE PARADISO by Dante Alighieri and is happy to have THE DIVINE COMEDY under her belt. She also finished Megan Marshall's fascinating biography, The PEABODY SISTERS: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism. Taking a break from historically-minded reading, she listened to Ruha Benjamin's award-winning book, VIRAL JUSTICE: How We Grow the World We Want. Emily dove into history and read THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester. Then she switched things up with a middle-grade graphic novel, SEA CHANGE by Frank Viva. She read two books that look at grief through very different windows: Sloan Crosley's memoir about the death of her best friend, GRIEF IS FOR PEOPLE, and a new inspirational rom-com by Emma Grey, THE LAST LOVE NOTE. She explains how technology is not socially or politically neutral and actually does the work of power and maintaining inequality along the color line through what she has termed “the new Jim Code”. Benjamin also highlights the ways that technologies such as search engines, algorithms, “big data”, the surveillance society and other digital tools have disproportionately negative impacts on black and brown and other marginalized communities. She also encourages us to take back our agency by finding ways to use these new technologies to do the work of creating a more humane and just society. Christoph Bartneck is an associate professor in the department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury where his research focuses on human-computer interaction, science and technology Studies, and visual design. He explains how racism and other forms of animus influence how human beings treat “black” and “brown” robots much worse than “white” robots. Bartneck also reflects on the human-machine interface and how algorithms and other technologies inevitably reflect the biases of their designers, engineers, and programmers. He also shares his thoughts on artificial intelligence,  “the Singularity”, and the exaggerated and fantastical claims that are made by many futurists and technologists.   On this episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega honors two people who recently passed away and who meant, albeit in very different ways, a great deal to him. I feel it is an urgent read for all of us who want to integrate the structural and the individual, the academic and the poetic, the political and the personal, knowing that each of these things are necessarily interlinked and interdependent: just like us. As big as our problems seem the solutions are closer than we think. We don't have to start from scratch to transform our world. All it takes is an attitude of inventiveness - to look at our current world and everything we have available to us, and then to reshape our current systems for the better.
