This week on CounterSpin: Elite media can give the impression that problems wax and wane along with their attention to them. So it is with police brutality. The news media has moved on, yet 2023 saw killings by law enforcement up from the previous year, which was up from the year before that. More than 1,200 people were killed, roughly three people every day, including not just those shot dead but also those fatally shocked by a stun gun, beaten, or restrained to death. Thirty-six percent of those killed were fleeing, and they were disproportionately Black. Unheard in the news is the hard work of communities to reimagine public safety without punitive policing. We hear about it from Monifa Bandele from the Movement for Black Lives. Also on the show: Little research is more important or less acknowledged than Princeton's (now UCLA's) Martin Gilens and Northwestern's Benjamin Page 2014 work on the translation of public opinion into public policy. Looking at more than 1,700 policies over 20 years, they concluded that where economic elite views diverged from those of the public — as they would — the public had “zero estimated impact upon policy change, while economic elites are still estimated to have a very large, positive, independent impact.” Awareness of that fundamental disconnect is always relevant — but maybe especially when it comes to election season, where corporate coverage suggests we have an array of choices. How do we acknowledge flaws in the system while still encouraging people to participate and to fight the roadblocks to voting that we're seeing right now? We get at that with Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way and former mayor of Ithaca, New York.   The post Monifa Bandele on Reimagining Public Safety / Svante Myrick on Roadblocks to Voting appeared first on KPFA.

We're already seeing the devastating effects of failing to maintain global warming at the 1.5 degrees, as pledged in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. In order to get this back on track we all need to consider our current energy consumption. So, what can businesses do to manage their impact? That's where ISO 50001, the Standard for Energy Management, comes in! ISO 50001 can help your business to continually improve its energy performance, energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption. Building an energy management system will ultimately help you to understand, monitor and measure your use of energy. Today Darren Morrow, Senior Isologist here at Blackmores, joins us to share his top 5 top tips for ISO 50001 Implementation. You'll learn ●      What is ISO 50001? ●      5 top tips for Implementing and Energy Management System   Resources ●      isologyhub ●      ISO 50001   In this episode, we talk about: [00:52] We have a more detailed walkthrough of ISO 50001 Implementation available in our steps to success podcast series, which are episodes: 84, 85 and 88 [01:05] What is ISO 50001? ISO 50001 is all about continually improving energy performance, energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption. By Implementing an energy management system, you will be able to fully understand and monitor and measure your use of energy. Like most other ISO's, continual improvement is at the heart of ISO 50001, and It's also based on the Annex SL format. So, it shares some similarities with Standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. If you've got ISO 14001, you're already half-way there! [01:40] ISO 50001 and ESOS – ISO 50001 can also help you comply with ESOS (The Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme). If you'd like to learn more about that, listen to episode 138. [02:50] Tip 1 – Top Management commitment and allocation of resources: This is vital, as the reason for implementation, management, requirements and aims along with expectations of everyone within the business for their support, is clearly demonstrated and communicated from the top down. With an energy management system, part of this commitment includes making sure suitable resources are made available, this includes: ·       People - For implementation, maintenance and improvement of the systems, including the means of gathering and reporting data. ·       Financial support - There will be times where investment will be required. Ensuring existing equipment maintenance and servicing undertaken as required to maintain efficiency. Allocate clear responsibilities for individuals e.g. gathering data such as meter readings, fuel usage, so that this is done consistently and the data is not only available but accurate. [04:14] Tip 2 – Data: For data collection we need to understand certain things, an Energy review will support the identification of energy sources, identify and understand energy use and determine clear performance monitoring and indicators, leading to the determination of the data required. Some key considerations include: ·       Identify sources of energy and your energy consumption from the energy review ·       The quality, precision and accuracy of the data collected needs to be considered and monitored if measuring / monitoring results are to be meaningful. ·       Data collection frequency should be determined and maintained to support the overall statistical analysis. Finally, set goals and targets for improvement (EnPIs) - this can be in overall energy consumption, specific equipment improvements, other ratios measures such as consumption per person of consumption vs revenue. [06:10] Tip 3 – Align and Integrate with other business management systems, goals and strategies: Sounds simple, but not always undertaken effectively, when implementing an energy management system consider any other management system that is already in place and look at any similarities, any elements that already exist that can be tweaked or expanded - this way, it is treated as 'business as usual'. [07:20] Tip 4 – Communication, training and awareness:  Communication plays a key role in any system, make sure you: ·       Communicate requirements, goals and commitments, and objectives or targets. ·       Keep staff informed of what's going on as their involvement and direct actions support achieving goals and targets, along with identifying improvements. ·       Assign responsibilities, create a team and/or assign a champion - This supports the effectiveness of data collection, and also can increase motivation and encourage identification of energy saving opportunities Energy savings require the commitment of the whole workforce. There ideally needs to be a champion in the organization who can drive change and savings. [08:41] Tip 5 – Record opportunities for improving energy efficiency: Any and all identified opportunities can be, and should be logged and monitored for suitability, no matter how 'far out there' these may be. Some may not be appropriate or feasible immediately, or in the short term, possibly due to costs / investment requirements. However, once an opportunity is logged, it can be monitored, assigned financial support and be planned for Implementation. In 2018, Catherine Hand was one of two producers for Walt Disney's adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved children's classic A Wrinkle in Time. Catherine's career in the entertainment business was launched working for the legendary writer/producer Norman Lear. She was the Associate Producer on Lear's Emmy Nominated ABC TV special, I Love Liberty, and helped to create the national nonprofit, People for the American Way. Later, she served as a development executive at Zoetrope, Francis Coppola's company where she worked on several projects, including Godfather III. Catherine has also worked for years in the public service sector. After having produced several large-scale events for national organizations, garnering a Gracie Award for best public affairs programming in 2009, Catherine was recruited by the Obama Administration where she was part of the core leadership team involved in communicating policy and political decisions impacting the federal workforce. Catherine shares some beautiful life lessons in this episode. "Faith is for when things are going wrong," she shares. Her lifelong dream did not come to fruition until after she turned 60. But she did not give up. "We can't changes things...but we can stop fearing them," she counsels. "Thoughts are temporary," she says of her 3:00 am musings. "They are not permanent," and we can talk back to them. One of her takeaways from writing her book, Becoming a Warrior, is that "Have something worth fighting for...that is greater than yourself." And others can benefit from what you have learned. Catherine encourages us to become warriors in the universe to illuminate others. She continues to develop new projects and enjoys coaching others to become warriors in their own lives. Her memoir, Becoming a Warrior is scheduled to be published by Bold Story Press on October 25, 2022. It will be available everywhere. "I read Madeleine L'Engle's award winning novel, A Wrinkle in Time, when I was ten years old and dreamt of one day making it into a movie. It would take five decades for my childhood dream to come true. My journey would include working alongside the television luminary Norman Lear in the creation of the nonprofit People For the American Way, and a 25 year-long conversation with author Madeleine L'Engle about her book. My memoir, Becoming a Warrior: My Journey to Bring A Wrinkle in Time to the Screen due to be released in October 2022 illustrates one woman's persistence—through a demanding career in the entertainment industry, the sudden and unexpected death of my beloved husband, raising three young children on my own—and eventual success. In 2018, over fifty years after I first read A Wrinkle in Time, Walt Disney Studios released a major motion picture based on this beloved novel directed by Ava DuVernay, written by Jennifer Lee and starred Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Storm Reid." -- Catherine Hand “Catherine's journey of over 50 years to have A Wrinkle In Time brought to the Silver Screen is simply extraordinary. And the book's impact upon her life is both compelling and inspirational.” -- Alan Horn, Former Chairman of Walt Disney Studios - Motion Pictures “No one I've known ever loved a book more than Catherine Hand loved A Wrinkle in Time. Her perseverance and journey to make the film is nothing short of inspiring.” -- Norman Lear, award winning writer/producer To learn more, see catherinehand.com https://www.instagram.com/catherinehand5555/ twitter: @madebyhand --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/maria-leonard-olsen/support

On April 18, 2014, HGTV announced it was planning to premier a home improvement reality television show called Flip It Forward in October 2014, featuring the identical twin brothers David and Jason Benham. By May 6, 2014, Right Wing Watch , a project of People For the American Way, published a report that labeled David Benham as an outspoken anti-gay, anti-abortion "extremist." The following day, May 7, 2014, HGTV issued an announcement via a tweet that it would not move forward with the brothers' series, thereby immediately canceling production in the middle of filming. Why such hatred for those whose ideology is different than your own? Why such lack of tolerance in the name of tolerance? In this episode Kenny answers that question. With less than 90 days to the November election, concerns are mounting that the Trump Administration is actively undermining the  U.S. Postal Service. Although the USPS is the country’s most popular government agency, President  Trump recently dismissed it as a “joke” and questioned its ability to deliver mail-in ballots on time. Trump’s newly appointed Postmaster General, who was also a major Trump campaign donor, has limited overtime work, and extra mail delivery, moves that postal workers say have created mail backlogs. In response,  Benjamin Jealous, the President of the People For the American Way, is spearheading a campaign to defend the Postal Service. We’ll talk to Jealous about what can be done to ensure that Americans can have confidence in the mail service.

Maybe this week’s title should have been: “Overthrow of the Empire” because I love Star Wars.Today I share an interview I had this summer with Jonathan Soto on Institutions and Working class movements and speaking on an overthrow of the Colonial Consultancy class in Puerto Rico. This interview happened shortly after Pierluisi attempted to take on the title of Governor. We spoke about laws that create inequality to benefit global corporate entities, and that oppress people of color/marginalized communities. Just look at the fact that Six out of 10 kids are living under the poverty level in Puerto Rico. However, there is more awareness around corporate schemes and the people are realizing that the power can be taken back as Jonathan says because “They have money but we have People”For me it was really refreshing to discuss the shift that we are seeing from campaigns to communities. While we didn’t know at that time Wanda would take the “throne” so to speak… it is important to look back and to keep in mind going forward because there is still a lot of corruption in Puerto Rican politics. But keep an eye out for Asambleas de Pueblo / the Town Halls that are brainstorming & organizing around local issues that affect communities.“People aren’t awarded their contracts based on performance, it’s based on relationships and that’s why we see so much misuse of funding and inefficiencies” - SotoThis particular quote from the interview is incredibly relevant right now because the Ministry of the interior in Puerto Rico, Zoe Laboy, has had to come out to defend the awarding of $125,000 in contracts to her own son. In a poor attempt to persuade us that nepotism isn’t happening, she is convincing no one of the influence her position would have in these decisions. A recent article covers comments from Trump’s chief of states, Mick Mulvany that they are withholding Aid money from Puerto Rico because it is a corrupt place, and compare it to a foriegn country - the Ukraine. But the difference there is that Puerto Ricans went through a natural Disaster, have had to fight in US wars, have been forced to be a territory, without representation, without ability to really govern themselves outside of a puppet government and really Trump and his buddies should be holding up a mirror with an Impeachment inquiry that doesn’t appear to be going away. One interesting note too - that when I recorded this interview I mentioned that this is something that’s happening all over the world - people are waking up to corruption and the way the elite take advantage of those with less. Now we are seeing how the protests in Chile especially are creating the kind of pressure that forces our political leadership to step to the plate and answer for their abuse of the working class. My favorite quote from Jonathan’s interview was this one: “Political Parties just distract from who’s really in power… and who is really in power is Wall Street.”I’ll leave you with one of Jonathan’s recent skits in front of the home of a Hedge Fund manager John Paulson who supports Trump and who holds $120 million in Puerto Rico bonds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxxNVTtEizg&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR28qiaYkwKacE-PzxskL9bWg4acJ09j7C171TOehx0-w4GKzOgzzCZuf3E And don’t miss the discussion at the very end about the Pinata!! Here's What I Don't Get

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2017 106:14

Everybody buckle in and keep your arms and legs inside the shuttle at all times, because we're all going for a ride as we bring in the following issues:-Price Obfuscation- PETA- Membership Cards- Amusement Park Ticket PricesI know that many of our wonderful listeners hail from other parts of the globe, where some aspects of life may make slightly more sense than the things we do in the U.S. of A., so if it's normal for you to go to a store, see a price on an item, and pay EXACTLY that price, then you should know about a nonsensical thing we Americans do called "price obfuscation". It's where the price on the item isn't the actual price you pay at the register. We, for whatever reason, don't include the sales tax on the sticker price. Only the money that you're giving the store. Once you get to the register, then ol' Uncle Sam gets to take his bite. And it can be a pretty big bite, especially when you're making a larger purchase. But sales tax isn't exclusive to the U.S. Many other countries also have sales tax, but simply include that sales tax on the sticker, so that if you're paying the store six currencies and the sales tax is an additional currency, then the price on the sticker will be seven currencies. But not in America. Nope. That'd make sense, and when you let all of your rules be decided by a committee of people who live in a bubble outside of the real world, anything that makes sense goes right out the window. Every single time. And speaking of things that don't make sense . . .Do you love animals? Everyone has their favorite furry (or feathered or scaly) creature that they just adore. I bet you'd love to see your favorite non-human treated well, because you're probably at least a half way decent person. But not if you work with PETA. People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals is a group of wierd, obsessed psychos who live by the moto "the end justifies the means". Except that, when PETA does it, they don't accomplish the ends; only the means. And the means are assinine, and more often than not are punishable as one form or another of assault. Don't like someone's fur coat? Spash 'em with paint. Not only are you going to jail for splashing someone with a potentially toxic liquid (hey, they didn't know if your bucket was full of paint or acid!) and they'll be pressing charges for destruction of property. PETA members live in a world of fanaticism, but because people get all up in their feelings about images of dogs and cats, they somehow get a pass when their actions cross the line. But that's how people are. We'll support anything that makes us feel or LOOK good, and if we're enabling pain and destruction along the way . . . well, I guess you can't win 'em all, right?Back to the topic of shopping. Everyone's been to a store where the person at the register tries to push some sort of rewards card or memership card on them. Especially grocery stores and Game Stop. But why? What do you actually benefit from that card? A few cents off your total? Big deal. You're still paying more than what's on the sticker! And, furthermore, the person at the register doesn't really want to push that card on you, but they have to, because if they don't, they'll be fired. Companies love knowing who is shopping, and what they're buying. If they can figure out who you are and what kind of things you like to buy, they can shove more products in your face and down your throat. It's all about demographics and marketing. And, hey, I'm all about effective marketing, but the idea of tricking everyone into using a card that collects their metric data is one of those "looks good on paper" ideas. In reality, nobody with a brain wants to fatten their wallet with useless pieces of plastic. And the employee doesn't want to get screamed at by Uncle Buck for asking him for his phone number. And speaking of screaming . . .The thrill, the joy, the excitement of riding a roller coaster . . . How much more American can you get? I know, I know, there are roller coasters all over the world. So, I'll tell you what's more American: capitalism. And while I love capitalism, I don't always get why some things get valued the way they do. For instance, why does it cost me $50 to come into your park and stand in line all day? Why should I find value in paying to get into a place that's extra hot, extra crowded, noisy, and full of products that are astronomically overpriced? Is the thrill of a two minute train ride that returns me to the exact spot I left supposed to justify this? I dunno, man. Seems like a pretty thin deal to me. But people still flock to amusement parks in the summer months as though they'll never see one again. But, hey, if they find value in that, then that's the beauty of capitalism and the free market.Sage calls in, a weather man predicts some precipitation, and Buck gets called out for a screw-up. What did he do wrong? You'll have to listen to this week's episode to find out!

The Resistance is a call for progressive change through engagement and activism. Guest Rio Tazewell, organizer/campaign manager at People For the American Way, will join me for a discussion on the state of the resistance and ways to engage people, particularly young people, in advocating for progressive change. I'm sure we will touch on money in politics (corroding our political system) and what we can do about it together. Rio works in DC and has experience launching startups focused on civic engagement, sustainability and grassroots advocacy. He is also a political hip hop artist, and I hope we will have a chance to hear new material to be released soon. Panel discussion: Why citizens should win the battle for control over sovereign wealth

How can it be that governments are wealthier than ever, yet fewer citizens enjoy the benefits that such wealth can bring? Never before have so many governments owned so much wealth in the form of financial assets amassed in state-controlled investment funds. Despite this, deficits persist, inequality worsens and the effects of the 2008 crash still reverberate. “Citizens’ wealth” – creating an additional source of revenue by turning states into wealth-owners - is a long-established idea, but we are yet to see this powerful tool used to its full effect. On 5 April the Lowy Institute hosted for a panel discussion on this topic with Angela Cummine, political theorist and author of Citizens’ Wealth: Why (and How) Sovereign Funds Should be Managed By the People For the People; David Murray, former CEO of the Commonwealth Bank; Paul Cleary, senior journalist at The Australian; and Lowy Institute Nonresident Fellow Dr John Edwards.
