Comhaltas na nGaedheal (CnG) is a newly-established group of right-wing extremists in Ireland. It focuses on physical confrontation and is part of a growing international network of so-called “active clubs”.The Active Club movement mixes extreme right-wing positions with a focus on masculinity and physical fitness, particularly mixed martial arts. The CnG group frequently posts photographs of its members engaged in combat sports training. Great care is taken to blur faces and other identifying marks. In some cases, participants' footwear is even blurred to conceal their identities.Members of the group have shown up at several anti-immigrant protests, including in Coolock last March. CnG does not just want a dramatic reduction in immigration, it wants mass deportations, according to an associate of the group who spoke with The Irish Times. In this episode, Irish Times Crime and Security correspondent Conor Gallagher assesses just how much of a threat these groups of self-styled “Irish patriots” are and how the Garda is handling this wave of far right groups. A Clarecastle councillor claims he was "shocked" by a request to withdraw a motion he tabled at the most recent meeting of Ennis local representatives. Ahead of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the first Fleadh Nua, Councillor Tom O'Callaghan, along with Councillor Johnny Flynn, called on the executive to "refrain from preventing" Comhaltas from using the Abbey Street Carpark Civic Space as a venue for events. A number of the meeting's attendees took exception to the wording of the motion and asked for it to be withdrawn, with Councillors Mary Howard and Clare Colleran-Molloy describing it as "incorrect" and "null and void". Fianna Fil Councillor O'Callaghan says he can't understand the level of opposition to what he believes is a common-sense proposal.

Seán Cleland is an Irish fiddle player, Irish music teacher, adjudicator, collaborator, producer and executive director of the Irish Music School of Chicago, a non-profit traditional Irish music, language, song and dance school, which he founded in 2003.Seán grew up on the North side of Chicago in an Irish-American household.  He started classical violin lessons at age 7, and at age 9 his parents took him to one of the first North American concert tours of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ireland's national music organization. The performers that fall night in 1972 were the absolute best traditional musicians, singers and dancers from Ireland including Paddy Glackin, Paddy Ryan and Antoin MacGabhann. That night was so impactful that he decided right then and there that he would play the fiddle. His musical education through the 1970s was energized by such local legends as Liz Carroll, Michael Flatley and Jimmy Keane who were bursting out of Chicago onto the world stage.  Additionally, there were quite a few older Irish musicians who had emigrated to the United States in the 1950s and Sean was incredibly privileged to get to know them and to spend so much time listening to their music and stories.Niall O'Leary TCRG, ADCRG is from Dublin Ireland. A former All-Ireland and World Champion, he founded the Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in Dublin in 1995, in the New York metropoilitan area in 1996 and in Florida in 2007. The School is currently the largest in New York City.  Niall O'Leary performs regularly as a solo artist, in duet with Darrah Carr, and with various acts such as Natalie MacMaster,Cherish The Ladies, The Prodigals, The Andy Cooney Band, Atlantic Wave, The McCabes and Mick Moloney's Green Fields of America. He is in constant demand as a choreographer and master instructor and conducts regular workshops around the US, Canada, Ireland, Japan and Mexico. He has made a CD and an instructional video in Irish step dancing entitled 'Cuts from the Kitchen'. He was the founding chairman of Ull Mor CCE, the Manhattan branch of Comhaltas.Marty joins Seán and Niall to talk about the Kilgubbin Project, which is an ongoing exploration of Irish music, pushing the boundaries of what Irish music means, and plumbing the depths of appreciation and love for it as well.

So - when it comes to this episode, we're nearly lost for words. It's engrossing. A deep dive into a sea teeming with life.  Clare born fiddle player Tola Custy talks about how Irish music nearly died and how his father and others of his generation saved it. About out of tune whistling, the woman who bossed the Tulla Céilí Band and Radical Comhaltas. Growing up in a house divided - Kevin Burke fans on one side, Frankie Gavin fans on the other. He talks about Asturian fiddle playing and Irish fiddle playing; the James Goodman manuscript collection; the Time (Ireland) Act of 1916. He talks about stage fright and feeding off the energy of other musicians, the different beauty of Micho Russell's playing. He talks about the waltz time in his head, and much else besides.  And he plays the folllowing pieces: The Lighthouse and The Mermaid (his own tune) into a Swedish jig followed by a Breton jig So Small The Boat, So Big The Sea (Tola Custy) Time Zone Laneway (Tola Custy) into The Maple Leaf (a reel composed by Darach De Brun for his wedding in 1976) The Yellow Wattle, which Tola learned from the playing of Micho Russell, into Metro-Gnome (his own composition) and finally Love At The Ending.  Following the last solo piece, Tola plays a set of tunes with Ado Barker, and they're then joined by Corinn Strating on flute. Recorded at The Last Jar in Melbourne as part of the first of three bush fire relief fundraisers.
