In April, we asked VOM Radio listeners to to Christians living in restricted nations and hostile areas. This week, Ty Scott, VOM's Regional Leader for East and Southern Africa, tells us about the work and effort involved in actually placing Bibles into the hands of Christians living in cities and villages in Sudan, Tanzania, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Statistically, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania are majority-Christian nations. Yet each has communities where almost every person is a Muslim. How is the gospel spreading in such places? And how are new followers of Christ treated by their families and the wider Islamic community? Ty will share about family persecution in Comoros, a country we've never discussed on VOM Radio, where Christians comprise only tenths of a percent of the population. Listen as Ty and VOM Radio Host, Todd Nettleton, discuss places where ethnic identity and Islam are completely intertwined. As gospel workers share the hope of Christ in those places, they don't ask people to leave their ethnicity but to fulfill what God would have them be. Hear the amazing testimony of a young man who brought his father, an imam (Islamic prayer leader), to faith in Christ, and how the gospel brought many into Christ's kingdom through his father's witness. Ty will also share specific ways you can pray for Christians in eastern and southern Africa.
Hearing God in the Small Story As we continue our journey through The Big Story of God—a theme introduced last week by Bill Chapman—this Sunday, we zoomed in. Guest speaker Steve Ball, Elim's Regional Leader, led us into a powerful truth: while God is telling a grand story through Scripture, He also longs to speak into our small, personal stories—right here, right now. And how does He do that? Through His Word. "Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." – Psalm 1:1-2 Steve reminded us that if we're looking for a more joyful, anchored, hope-filled life, it starts with this one practice: meditating on the Word of God. Not just reading it. Not just hearing it. But meditating on it—like slowly savouring a delicious meal, letting it linger, nourish, and shape us from the inside out. The Ancient Practice of Meditating on Scripture Steve taught us a method of biblical meditation that is thousands of years old—a way to truly engage with the Bible so that God's voice is no longer distant or abstract, but personal and transformative. Here's how: 1. Read it Don't rush. Read the passage slowly. Re-read it. Read it in different translations. Each time, allow God to highlight something fresh. 2. Speak it Say it out loud. Change your emphasis on different words. Speak it over your life, your situation, your family. There's power in declaring Scripture. 3. Write it Writing helps take things deeper. That might mean journaling, drawing, writing poetry, even writing a song. The goal? To respond creatively and personally to what God is saying. 4. Pray it Turn Scripture into a prayer. Invite God to speak through what you've just read. Prayer and writing often go hand-in-hand in this step. 5. Live it This is where transformation happens. As we meditate, the Word stays with us. It shapes how we think, speak, and live—day and night. God Is Ready to Speak – Are You Ready to Listen? Meditation is not something to endure—it's something to enjoy. The invitation this week is simple: slow down, open your Bible, and let God speak. Whether it's one verse or a whole chapter, He's ready to whisper words that will shape your life. “God has some beautiful things to say to you today—you just need to get started.” – Steve Ball

Ultimately, God called them to go on mission to one of the world's most concentrated areas of lost people – North India and Nepal. Emily Rassam is the Senior Financial Planner for Archer Investment Management. She has a true passion for helping clients make sense of their financial lives and develop clear plans to achieve their goals. Before Archer Investment Management, Emily spent 14 years at investment firms in New York and North Carolina working with families, executives, and institutional retirement clients. In her downtime, Emily enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and hiking with her son, daughter, husband, and dogs. She currently serves as a mentor and run lead for Tri It for Life, an organization empowering women of all ages and athletic abilities to train for their first triathlon. She also serves on the board of YMCA Emerging Leaders in Charlotte, as a foster home for ABC Basset Hound rescue, and as a Regional Leader and Carolinas Chapter Chair for WIPN (WE Inspire, Promote, Network) wipn.org, a women's leadership and networking group for women in the retirement industry. In this episode, Theresa, Ivana, and Emily discussed:Growing by slowing down Balance versus Harmony Assuming the best in others Protect your calendar Key Takeaways:Many times people feel that the meaning of “growth” is to keep getting a bigger title and a bigger salary. However, real growth would sometimes mean that you'd have to pause, slow down, and carefully consider what the most meaningful thing in your life truly is and if you're spending your limited time with the people who mean a lot to you. Work-life balance is like walking on a tightrope - you have to keep each side of yourself equal in order to stay upright. However, being in balance in this way is still a stressful picture. Harmony is different, it's about making one side of your life work well with the other, embracing both and discerning which deserves priority in the moment. It's difficult to see past your own hardships and your own pain. However, when dealing with others, it's better to always assume the best in them and recognize that they might be going through something heavy in their life. You can only know so much about a person, even if you see them every day. It is best to give people the benefit of the doubt. Learn to say no. You don't have to say yes to everything and to everyone. Protect your calendar, be mindful of what you're dedicating your schedule to, and make sure that you are always able to keep your work in harmony with your personal life. When you are given a request, take time to really consider if you should say yes or no to it. “[Work-life] balance to me [is] balancing on a tightrope, if you don't have them equal, then you're not going to be balanced. So harmony just feels better. My goal is just that I feel good about both areas. I'm trying to build both [areas] into my life happily.” - Emily RassamConnect with Emily Rassam:Website: https://archerim.com/ , https://archerim.com/team-members/emily-c-rassam/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emilyjcasey/ Connect with Theresa and Ivana:Websites:Theresa, True Strategy Consultants: https://tsc-consultants.com/ Ivana, Courageous Being: https://www.courageousbeing.com/ Instagram:Ivana: https://www.instagram.com/courbeing/ Theresa: https://www.instagram.com/tscconsultants/ LinkedIn: Step into the Pivot: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/step-into-the-pivot/ Theresa: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tree-conti/ Ivana: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ivipol/

In this state of mind, it often becomes difficult to ask for support or receive help from other people. However, we have to push past this resistance and courageously allow people to help us. Difficult situations have a way of bringing people together. It creates an instant connection when you meet someone who's going through something similar to what you are going through. Take your time. You don't have to answer every message right away or return every call that you miss. If it's not an emergency, then don't burden yourself with responding to the point that you become overwhelmed and burnt out. If you're feeling tired, then take a break. Eat healthy and on time. Drink water when you are thirsty. Take a nap if you feel like taking a nap. Listen to your body because it tells you what you need in the moment. Break the habit of ignoring your own needs. “It's okay to say no. No one's bleeding, it can wait till the next day or whenever you're feeling more up to it. If you're feeling tired, don't fight the nap, just take the nap. 195: Leading a Nonprofit in a Post Pandemic Working Environment (Katherine Lambert)SUMMARYThe pandemic put a unique pressure on nonprofit organizations and its leaders to do more with less, and adapt to new technologies and structures. As we usher in a post Covid-19 future, what will the new normal in the nonprofit sector look like? In episode #195 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, we speak with veteran philanthropic leader, Katherine Lambert, about finding balance post-pandemic and moving from surviving to thriving. While the sector sometimes lags in innovation, the pandemic has forced organizations to adapt which has brought positive transformation to how they communicate, engage donors and volunteers, and raise funds. A philanthropic organization's work is as effective as the people who perform it, and Katherine shares how they have revamped work culture, hours and practices to find and retain quality talent. ABOUT KATHERINEKatherine Lambert joined the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter in April, 2014 as its Chief Executive Officer. She works with a volunteer and staff team across the 49 counties in Central and Western North Carolina to achieve the Association's mission to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. In this episode, Shellee and Emily discuss:The best time to plan for collegeWhere to put your money for your future needsPreparing the FASFA and CSS profileHaving financial planning conversations with your child with the help of professionals Key Takeaways: Start to save before you have a child. Thinking about and setting goals together, and understanding what type of support and contribution would be made to your future children and their college is easier to do at that time. There are numerous options if you want your child to be able to attend college debt-free - you can either save all your money beforehand, you can invest it in accounts that the FAFSA doesn't look at, or you can invest it in things that make sense to you.Planning your financial future and setting both short- and long-term goals is the best way to prepare your FASFA and CSS profiles in advance.Don't let financial obligations for your child's college get in the way of your financial goals. Ensure that your child understands how his or her college choice will impact their career options, the income they can expect from their career, and the length of time they will be required to work for free.Engage in financial planning conversations with the help of professionals who can objectively zoom out and share figures about return on investment and any other area of financial planning. “It's good to have those conversations and have that goal setting occur first. And the more organized that you are going into that process, the easier those types of profiles become because you have a clear understanding of your balance sheet as it stands today, and how the college education process fits into your overall life plans and life goals.” — Emily Rassam About Emily Rassam: Emily works as a Senior Financial Planner for Archer Investment Management, a 100% digital and virtual firm that serves clients nationwide. She has a genuine passion for assisting clients in making sense of their financial lives and developing clear plans to achieve their objectives. She got degrees in law and economics, and started her career in sales at IBM in Brazil in the mid-1980s. In 1992 she moved to the U.S. to get an MBA at Northwestern University. That led to a career of over 30 years in technology, M&A and global business transformations. A couple of years ago she retired from her last job as CEO, and she embarked in her board "portfolio career": public, private and non-profit boards, in addition to teaching and doing some advisory work for CEOs.4:55 Her advice for aspiring directors: "Think of your board journey as any career." She started serving on non-profit boards and worked her way up to private and public companies. Her first public company board was CME Group. She's served on 7 public company boards, plus many private and non-profit boards.7:46 Distinctions on serving on public/private/non-profit boards ("even within those buckets there are significant differences.") Her other current public company boards: First Internet Bancorp (NASDAQ: INBK), Carparts.com (NASDAQ: PRTS); Amyris (NASDAQ: AMRS), and Pembina Pipeline (NYSE: PBA). When she thinks about board opportunities, she thinks about three things:Is she aligned with the mission/vision of the company and what it stands for.Does she have the skills, experience, credentials and competencies to add value to the board.Does she like the people (other board members).12:56 Her experience serving on the board of Eletrobras, a major Brazilian state-owned power generation company. "There is always a give and take --what you offer and what you learn-- and that to me is what makes board service so interesting."16:27 Her thoughts on the evolution of ESG and DEI. Her article "Cutting Through the ESG Noise: A Practical Framework for Corporate Boards" with Cigdem Oktem, Regional Leader, EY Center for Board Matters.22:15 Her thoughts on boardroom diversity, SB-826 and AB-979 getting struck down in California Courts. "I wish we didn't have to rely on quotas, but the truth is that when left in the hands of nom/gov chairs, board chairs and companies and executives, [progress] was just not happening.""All I can hope for is that some halo effect [since SB-826] has demonstrated that having diversity and inclusion on boards is a good business practice."24:41 On the progress of Latinos on boards. She serves on the board of the Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA), co-Chairs its Latino Corporate Directors Educational Foundation (LCDEF) that delivers on the BoardReady Institute (BRI).28:20 On the politicization of boards. "Both companies took a stand, and that is what's important."34:52 Her take on governance practices in the tech industry. On the role of experience and self-awareness in leadership.37:17 Discussion of founder-led tech companies, governance consequences, and reverse bias discrimination. "Revenue is vanity, profit is sanity but cash is reality." "Sometimes there is too much of a good thing." "What is lacking is appreciation and respect for experience."44:52 The 3 books that have greatly influenced her life:Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl (1946)The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho (1988)Exodus, by Leon Uris (1958)46:06- Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them? "I have had so many, I apply a 360 mentorship model" "I crave feedback and mentorship all the time."47:05 - Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by? "When contemplating an opportunity, if you don't foresee the possibility of death, bankruptcy or prison, then go for it!""Always think about how to pay it forward" (good karma)Particularly for women who suffer from imposter syndrome: "Remember that you're seeing people from the outside where they seem so confident but you don't know what they are feeling on the inside, so do your thing, walk in confident, don't worry too much about outside influence."49:16- An unusual habit or an absurd thing that she loves: "Melting chocolate and top it with yogurt or nuts to pretend that it's healthy." Reality TV, she's watched every season of the Survivor!50:30 - The living person she most admires: her middle sister, a pediatrician in Brazil, "probably the most knowledgeable, powerful and yet so humble and generous."Ana Dutra is an experienced CEO, business advisor and corporate director of publicly traded, family-owned and private corporations.
