760: Climate Change: What Future Does the UN IPCC Report Predict for India?

The Big Story

Heatwaves, flash floods, incessant rains, deadly forest fires. Extreme climate change events seem to be grabbing headlines daily across the world and a new UN report has made it clear that some of these climate changes are irreversible. Referred to as 'code red for humanity', the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a landmark report on 9 August which draws on more than 14,000 scientific studies. The report also comes just three months before the important climate summit in Glasgow known as COP26. The report has scientifically projected how the climate will be impacted if carbon and greenhouse emissions are not reduced but underlining it all is a message for the biggest polluters that they need to reassess their climate policy. And one polluter, India, cannot afford to ignore the findings of the IPCC report. The report has predicted an increase in the likelihood of disasters like the Chamoli glacial break in Uttarakhand or Cyclone Amphan in West Bengal. More incessant rains, dry spells, and heatwaves are also frequent tags in the reports when the subcontinent is discussed. What future does the IPCC report predict for the world and what does it mean for India? What action do we need to take? A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Yaas' and is likely to cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts on May 26 after turning into a very severe cyclonic storm. The cyclone fury is set to hit India, barely a week after cyclone 'Tauktae' battered the western coast leaving behind a trail of destruction. The governments of Bengal and Odisha are on high alert for the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas heading their way from the Bay of Bengal and likely to make landfall late on Wednesday. 'Yaas' is likely to cross the coasts between Paradip in Odisha and Sagar islands in West Bengal around noon on May 26 as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 155-165 kmph, gusting to 185 kmph, Kolkata's Regional Meteorological Centre Deputy Director Sanjib Bandopadhyay said. Yaas is expected to be about as intense as Cyclone Tauktae which slammed into the west coast last week but tamer than Cyclone Amphan which hit Bengal exactly one year ago and for about three devastating minutes sustained wind speeds of 240 kmph. During these uncertain times, we offer you a guided meditation in Bangla to manage stress and help reconnect with yourself. This meditation includes calming messages in our mother tongue that can bring forth feelings of comfort and much-needed support. Guided meditations are for anyone who would like to bring calm to their day through breathing techniques, restorative practices, and positive affirmations. By making time to just breathe you can help yourself feel more relaxed. This 3-minute meditation was made for the Bengali diaspora community by Teresa Gomes, Yoga & Meditation Teacher and Founder of Sisters Across Oceans. **************** About Teresa | Zen with T Teresa is a first generation Bangladeshi-Canadian born in Toronto. She is a recent Master's in Environmental Studies graduate from York University. Professionally, Teresa has gained experience in the policy sector, recently, she served as a Policy Analyst at Global Affairs Canada working on the Rohingya Refugee Crisis. She is the Co-Founder and Director of Sisters Across Oceans (SAO), a non-profit that leverages opportunities for Bengali women's growth, well-being and representation. She says  saving lives is not enough.  Her floating hospitals have expanded into schools in the refugee camps, paralegal help, para-veterinary help and training people to maintain the solar panels that connect them to government services. The secret of a long lasting project like this is treating everyone with dignity. It is thrilling to hear how Runa imbues her volunteers and staff with a deep respect for human rights. She speaks to European donors in the same way, wanting their empathy and understanding in a sustained partnership rather than just a guilty cheque. She says seeing the Rohingya refugee camps nearly broke her but she is undaunted. This is one of our best podcasts and should be a tonic for anyone feeling climate angst or despair. The motto of "Friendship" is "Think big, start small, begin now!". Dr Saleemul Huq spoke to an international audience about "Climate, Covid19 and the collaboration we need." He described how the recent Cyclone Amphan was supercharged by the elevated temperatures in the Bay of Bengal. It caused damage in the Sundarban Forests and over two million people were evacuated to safety with their lifestock. But his pride is in the fact that the death toll was low. Compared to the 140,000 killed in the 1990's, Bangladesh is now a model of early warnings and adaptation. The millions of volunteers who go around with loud speakers in the villages, warning of a climate emergency, now go round wearing face masks and giving a Covidsafe health message.  "Be prepared!" Dr Huq says that Covid19 is a rehearsal for the great climate crisis which will affect all of us. He says governments and businesses who refuse to listen to scientists are acting unconscionably. Just as the pandemic crosses all borders so does the climate disruption we cause by our emissions. Listening to these two compassionate and energetic Bangladeshis will remind you of the moral vision of Martin Luther King. When I read  that Global Fossil Fuel Subsidies are currently $5.2 Trillion and $29 Billion in Australia according to the IMF, I understand why the climate frontline states demand justice. https://reneweconomy.com.au/global-fossil-fuel-subsidies-reach-5-2-trillion-and-29-billion-in-australia-91592/ As well as sending a cheque in a crisis and reconnecting with the Green bank, we need to understand and empathise with the suffering caused by the emissions our government is subsidising. This podcast might awaken some so please forward it to those who need to hear.   Support the show: https://www.climactic.fm/p/support-the-collective/

It was a long night for those living in the coastal areas of Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh, as what is being said to be one of the worst storms in decades, left a trail of destruction in the east coast. In Odisha the damage is limited to mostly agricultural lands but two people including an infant have also been reported dead. However, West Bengal clearly took the bigger hit in this cyclone. There's an ongoing power cut, phone lines are still down, drinking water is scare and at least 72 people have died in the state from cyclone Amphan. The Bay of Bengal has triggered many a few deadly cyclones in the past that have battered the east coast, but Cyclone Amphan is only the second "super cyclone" with wind speeds crossing 220 kmph, since 1999. It's being said that the damage from Amphan has been far worse from the cyclone that Bengal and Odisha have witnessed in the previous years. Tune in to The Big Story for more!

Since the start of the pandemic, Bolsonaro has often touted the anti-malarial medication.

Israel declared it would annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

Belgians have been using cranes to reunite families in lockdown.

Cyclone Amphan made landfall in eastern India.

Patients use their brainwaves to control the cyborg.
