Cold Tulips, Hot Lions Buzz Holland, Michigan was cold, but Lions gear warmed the streets. Hats. Jerseys. Hoodies. Pride showed up. After a quick day off for family, the Detroit Lions Podcast returned with perspective from outside the bubble. A visiting Colts fan saw it clearly: Detroit is the better run team. That view matches what many around the NFL are saying. Why Detroit Skipped Rookie Minicamp No rookie minicamp in Allen Park. Other teams held theirs over the weekend. The Lions kept rookies involved through voluntary workouts instead. The choice stands out and invites debate. The show argued the team should host something similar, even if scaled. Minicamps can surface tryout flashes, but they can also create churn that does not help a contender. Look at a cautionary example. Las Vegas cycled players after tryouts and released Charles Snowden, a 2023 contributor in their pass rush group. That move stirred fans because help opposite Max Crosby remains unsettled there. Detroit knows the strain of a star carrying heavy snaps. Aidan Hutchinson did that last year. Chasing names cut during post-draft reshuffles can feel tempting. It often is not productive for a roster with standards. If a player cannot stick with a struggling depth chart, patience beats impulse. Free Agent Reality Check Calais Campbell signed elsewhere at age 40. The veteran market still has options, but the board is thinning. The show reviewed remaining free agents and weighed the ring-chase factor. Detroit qualifies. Around the league, the Lions are viewed as a viable NFL contender. That reputation matters when veterans pick landing spots late in the calendar. There have been no splash acquisitions in Detroit this week. Undrafted free agency remains quiet without a rookie minicamp to stage tryouts. That is fine for now. The roster can wait for a value fit rather than force a move based on a weekend flash somewhere else. Fan Pulse and Rookie Spotlight Fans in Detroit are re-energized after the draft. The class lacks headline skill names, but it fits needs and identity. The national Rookie Premiere will not feature Lions picks. That event leans to quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs. No offensive linemen were invited. Defensive linemen rarely get that nod. Pass rushers David Bailey, Arvel Reese, and Reuben Bain are expected there. Detroit drafted Blake Miller and Derek Moore up front. They are not trading-card darlings. They are trench players built for January football. Big picture, the message landed: avoid panic shopping, trust the roster, and use the calendar. The Detroit Lions are positioned to add selectively while keeping continuity. That is how real NFL contenders operate. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #rookieminicamp #kadynproctornfldraft #johndorsey #nflfreeagency #camjordan #jabrillpeppers #lionsdefense Learn more about your ad choices. Jagger May is joined by Andrew Mott as they connect free agency fallout to draft needs, and it keeps coming back to one idea: do not force luxury picks when the roster still has clear holes. The conversation hits teams that missed on Max Crosby and pivoted, including the “consolation” angle around Rashan Gary, plus how bringing back Javonte Williams impacts what a team can justify early. There is also a clear skepticism about overvaluing stopgap receivers as long-term answers, especially when a team still needs a real running mate for Malik Nabers. The Jeremiyah Love debate shows up again, with pushback on trying to force a top-ten running back landing spot when several teams already have capable backs. Instead, the focus shifts to guards, corners, and roster construction. Washington's needs are framed as “get offense,” while the tight end discussion ties Chigoziem Okonkwo to the Zach Ertz style role, and the Eagles angle leans toward finding answers at safety and interior line. The episode also touches teams like the Rams preparing for life after Matthew Stafford, the Vikings' upside if they ever landed Love, and the 49ers' urgency to protect Brock Purdy if Trent Williams becomes a real question. Baltimore backed out of that trade, swooped in on Trey Hendrickson while he was still with Cincinnati, and now everybody in the league is giving them the side-eye. Pack Nation called in HOT on this one. Ryan takes the lines from Dakota in Tennessee and Kyle from Madison as the crew breaks down one of the messiest offseason storylines in recent memory — the Ravens' Max Crosby fiasco. Free Agency Day, Real Moves The NFL's free agency window finally turns official at 4:00. The market already feels volatile after a reported Max Crosby deal fell apart on medical review. That backdrop matters for the Detroit Lions. Big names tempt. Medicals and money complicate. The Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on what actually changed in Detroit today. Cap Reset: What Goff's Move Signals Jared Goff restructured his contract, converting $40 million of base salary into a signing bonus and adding another void year. The move frees up $32 million in 2026. Detroit was not pinned against the cap, but the team needed room to do anything meaningful. This creates it. The Lions did not max out their options. They could have cleared up to $40 million this year by converting almost the entire salary to bonus. They chose restraint. The contract now runs with a void through 2029, with that final year voided. Cap figures spike in 2028 and 2029, but another adjustment then is expected. The point today is flexibility. Expect measured signings at the same tier we have seen, plus the breathing room to stage extensions for Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Branch, and maybe Sam LaPorta. You need upfront space to absorb signing bonuses without creating a bigger balloon later. Detroit will not do restructures just to admire cap space. There is a purpose coming. No Crosby Splash for Detroit The Crosby situation underlines why. A reported Raiders-Ravens deal is off after Baltimore reviewed his medicals. The Cowboys are said to be out, too. Crosby is a good player. The health flags are real in this market. Given Detroit's recent injury frustrations, passing on that kind of swing makes sense. The hypothetical of sending two first-round picks and then backing out on medicals is a cautionary tale. You lose time. You lose leverage. You invite chaos. Detroit's approach reads like discipline, not hesitation. Depth Chart: Rodriguez and Bridgewater Back While driving home last night, the news hit: the Lions brought back Malcolm Rodriguez and Teddy Bridgewater. Rodriguez's return locks in the top reserve linebacker role. He drew interest from the Houston Texans and some from the Seahawks, but he stays in Detroit. Contract terms were not disclosed. The team still needs another linebacker. Coverage has been a known limitation for Rodriguez, so competition and roles will matter. Bridgewater's return stabilizes the quarterback room behind Goff. Continuity counts in March. It keeps the offense aligned while the front office works the margins on defense and special teams. As free agency formalizes this afternoon, expect the Lions to keep pressing the same smart, steady pace. Cap clarity. Targeted adds. No forced splashes. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #jaredgoffrestructure #nflfreeagency #malcolmrodriguez #teddybridgewater #cademays #isiahpacheco #lionsdraft Learn more about your ad choices. Tiki and the crew hit the QB carousel chatter (Rodgers fatigue included), debate the real value of this year's wide receiver buzz, and dig into whether Max Crosby trade smoke is actually real or just a Tom Brady conversation away from disappearing. Then the local angle heats up with Jets franchise tag talk for Breece Hall and why a transition tag makes way more sense than the non-exclusive tag. They also touch the new head coach era with John Harbaugh and Mike McCarthy at the podium, the “Mendoza mania” storyline that might be nothing, and the draft question that could define this class: will there be a second quarterback in Round 1, or are we staring at a rare one QB first round scenario? Finally, they get into Jeremiah Love and how high is too high for a running back, even if he's a top tier talent.
