A U.S. service member has died after setting himself on fire Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., authorities confirmed Monday. A video posted online showed the man shouting "Free Palestine" as he burned during the incident, which lasted about a minute before law enforcement officers extinguished the flames at about 1pm. The man appeared to be in military uniform and identified himself as "an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force." Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek confirmed via email Sunday evening that "an active duty Airman was involved in today's incident." The Israeli Embassy said in a statement that none of its staff was injured and all were safe. The latest: The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said in a statement Monday that after first responders arrived on the scene the man was "transported by DC Fire and EMS to a local hospital where he later died." Police identified the man as Aaron Bushnell, 25, of San Antonio, Texas. An investigation of the incident is ongoing, MPD said. In the video of the incident, Bushnell said he would "no longer be complicit in genocide," which the Israeli military was accused of committing in Gaza in an International Court of Justice case brought by South Africa. "I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest." The MPD said in a post to X that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal was called to the 3500 block on International Drive in northwest D.C. "in reference to a suspicious vehicle that may be connected to the individual," but it later reported that no hazardous materials had been found. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. As protests continued at the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, DC, fire marshals attempted to enter the building and remove the activists occupying the space. Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence claims volatility in Venezuela is threatening the peace and security of the Western Hemisphere. During a speech at the State Department Tuesday, Pence said the struggle within Venezuela is a battle between dictatorship and democracy. He argued that embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro must go and said the US will continue to stand with the people of Venezuela. The US recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the South American nation. The US has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, its strike group and bombers to the Middle East ahead of schedule to send a "clear and unmistakable message" to Iran. National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration was acting "in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings." Where did this so-called intelligence come from, and what does this mean?According to Ramin Mazaheri, chief correspondent in Paris for Press TV, "The French government has been forced to shamefully admit that they made totally false accusations that May Day Yellow Vest anti-government protesters tried to break into the Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital in order to 'attack,' 'assault' and 'steal.' Countless mainstream media are just as covered in ignominy for having repeated these untrue claims. I was right there when it happened, covering it for PressTV, so I witnessed exactly what transpired. In fact, I even gave a live interview at the exact time of the incident, just after 4 p.m. I don't have a copy of that for now, but I hope to get one soon." So what happened and why? General elections will be held in South Africa on May 8 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. They will be the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and will determine who will become the nation's next president. As South Africa prepares to head to the polls in the crucial general election on Wednesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa faces a stern challenge to restore waning faith in the African National Congress party, after more than a decade of rampant corruption and misrule. Our nation’s capital, Washington DC, is actually a relatively small parcel of land. At the same time, DC Fire usually can be found in the top 12 for total runs and several of its engines and ladders run in the top 5! Our guest today, Capt. (ret) Jimmy Partridge, knows all about that, having served over thirty years in DCFD. In our podcast today, Jimmy starts off telling us about several of the challenging calls he ran, including the last call of his long career. As you listen, you’ll hear him describing conditions and tactics, rather than self-promotion and bluster. These calls lead to the crux of what the retired captain wanted to focus on, namely if you are thinking about seeking a promotion, what are some of the challenges you will face. An officer must change the way he or she thinks as a basic firefighter. With rank comes responsibility – a lot of responsibility, over many areas. Jimmy tries to help you move over that “mine field.” Listen to a real, long-time veteran of one of the busiest departments in the country.
