Kylie Fox Returns to East Coast DNA! The burgeoning New Brunswick-based singer-songwriter Kylie Fox is back on East Coast DNA to share her second studio full-length album, Sequoia. Supported by ArtsNB, Music New Brunswick, and the Canada Council for the Arts, Sequoia is an 11-track album developed with her band and six-time ECMA-winning producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Fortunate Ones, The Good Lovelies). Deeply rooted in folk-Canadiana, Sequoia also delves into folk-rock and jazz-pop fusion, embodying a sound Fox describes as “70s Sesame Street meets Sharon Van Etten.” The album reflects on themes of gratitude, women's roles, relationships, and the environment, with inspiration drawn from a news story about firefighters saving a Sequoia tree. Kylie shares, “It resonated with me how severely nature and time have been taken for granted.” In songs like the title track, she explores personal realizations about how we sometimes neglect the most important aspects of life—echoing the sentiment of Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi. Sign up for Kylie Fox's newsletter at: kyliefox.com Join us on the podcast to hear Kylie discuss the stories behind Sequoia and her journey as a rising star in the Canadian folk scene!
Finish the sentence, I'll have the good life when… I truly believe that one of Satan's greatest deceptions is to fool us into comparing our lives to some future reality that may not ever come. We practice this deception by entertaining the thought that when this season passes, life will be good. When I don't have to change diapers anymore, life will be good. When I have enough money, life will be good. When I retire, life will be good. When this dynamic changes in my relationship, life will be good. Your ability to experience the good life is not based on a set of circumstances, but the reality of God's blessing in your life. In this message we dive into a new series on the Beatitudes and God's ability to bless us. Pastor Matt McCarter

“Dark Island” Inspired by poetry, traditional celtic music, indie rock and the terrain of their beloved home of Cape Breton, the members of Villages have the island in their bones. And that makes sense—because they come from five generations of Cape Bretonians. So it's safe to say it's in their bones, their hearts, their minds and their souls. And it shows. The band's new long player Dark Island is a moving meditation on ancestry, roots and Cape Breton itself, the latter being the spiritual connective tissue that links the album's eleven tracks. From songs like the buoyant Love Will Live On to the moving Celtic groove of Play The Fiddle All Night, which you just heard, Dark Island is filled with pure sonic joy. Produced Juno-award winning composer and producer Joshua Van Tassel, who has worked with the Great Lake Swimmers and Fortunate Ones, this album is nothing short of revelatory. Inspired by the dramatic terrain of Cape Breton and the nature that inhabits it, Dark Island creates a moving landscape of sonorous melodies, lifting harmonies and poetic finesse. www.thevillagesband.net www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Weekend AM's Melissa Tobin is at the Juno Awards in Edmonton! She caught up with local nominees Fortunate Ones before they played for an Alberta audience.
Newfoundland-based musicians Catherine Allan and Andrew James O'Brien are the couple behind Juno-nominated band Fortunate Ones. The band's latest album, That Was You and Me, released early in June of 2022. Fortunate Ones recently embarked on a tour alongside fellow East Coast artists, The Once and Old Man Luedecke. That tour, dubbed the Anchors Up! Tour finds the band performing shows in Alberta in late November 2022. The duo behind this incredible folk outlet took time out of their busy tour schedule to chat with Hidden Track host Grant Stovel for a look at their personal and artistic journeys thus far. Andrew and Catherine tell us about how the pandemic caused them to look deep within themselves (and each other) in a whole new way creatively, how the songs on this new record took shape during a secluded summer in a seaside clapboard house, the great Newfoundland tradition of songcraft, staying grounded by running marathons and doing yoga, and the excitement of touring in a bus for the first time ever.
ANDREW FARRISS is one of Australia's greatest songwriters and a co-founder and main songwriter for multi award winning band INXS. Andrew has spent time writing in Nashville and Australia for the last 10 years, before pursuing a solo career. His new EP, THE LOVE MAKES THE WORLD, will be released in October. FORTUNATE ONES is a Canadian indie folk duo from St. John's, Newfoundland, consisting of Andrew James O'Brien and Catherine Allan. Both sing lead vocals, while James plays guitar, and Catherine plays accordion and keyboards. Their album THE BLISS won the Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year. Their latest album THAT WAS YOU AND ME was released this summer. Kyle Yang is a 13 year old classical pianist from Lexington, KY.

DEVS, a tv series on FX/Hulu, is easily one of the best things I've ever seen on tv. It's written, directed and produced by Alex Garland the man responsible for Ex Machina & Annihilation, two of my favorite films of the last ten years. The sound design and music in his films is always perfect. His musical collaborators are Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow and they are responsible for the music in DEVS as well. Garland lets scenes breathe, lets the music wash over you as the camera lingers. It's difficult to separate the original music from pre-existing music used in the series. No soundtrack has been released so this mix has none of the newly written score. But I was able to track down a few of the pre-existing tracks that were used. The most important of which is Jan Garbarek - Regnantem Sempiterna. It makes several appearances throughout the series. One of the other pieces I was happy to find is Fortunate Ones by The Beacon Sound Choir. I ended up using two other tracks from them because it fit the style of the show perfectly. I used several tracks from other soundtracks by Salisbury & Barrow and a few from the new Johann Johannsson album. I also used some favorite tracks from Cliff Martinez because of the steel drum sound he uses. Salisbury & Barrow used that same type of sound throughout their score. And anybody that has seen the series finale will know why I used Rachmaninov - Dues Meus. If you haven't seen the series I highly recommend it. And then, of course, listen to this mix. Cheers! When I first heard about a guy who invites musicians into his car so that he can conduct a quick interview, have them perform a song, and then create a video episode of each encounter, I was immediately intrigued. I also had a lot of question about how he got the idea and how he was making it happen. Jeff Boudreau is the creator and host of the fabulously creative web video series, “Jeff’s Musical Car.” Based in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Jeff has produced over 250 episodes at the time we recorded this podcast, ranging from local artists from the Moncton music scene all the way to Internationally renowned talents such guitarist, Jesse Cook. Jeff has chauffeured a few of the musicians that easily fall into my top ten of any list of my favourite music, including Colin & John-Angus MacDonald from The Trews, David Francey and The Fortunate Ones, though I’ve yet to see an episode where I wasn’t impressed by the musicianship of Jeff’s companion for that particular video. Jeff’s story is a terrific example of the power of an idea and the fuel that genuine passion gives to it. I continue to be amazed by what people can do when they’re acting from their heart and allowing themselves to learn as they go while enjoying the process. Jeff Boudreau and his Musical Car are an exceptional positive example for the rest of us in that regard. Some of the key takeaways I got from Jeff’s “Musical Car” Journey: 1. The gratification that comes from pursuing an idea and allowing yourself to figure it out and get better as you go. As Jeff puts it, "There's no guidebook on how to record bands in vehicles." 2. The value of building relationships & power of networking with patience and good intentions. 3. "dreaming of the bright green fields" [CROO] Mid March means it's time for the wearing of the green, as St. Patrick's Day approaches. Accordingly, we grab our shillelaghs and affect a brogue as we discuss some of the Irish connections in the Sherlock Holmes stories. While there are many Irish references, both subtle and overt, we concentrate primarily on two of the stories where the Irish connection is a central plot point. And interestingly enough, both involved some sort of Irish secret society and the need to go undercover. We also include a bit of history of some musical instruments, discuss a handful of news items that have come to our attention, and welcome Al Gregory, BSI ("The Grimpen Postmaster") to the show as a contestant on Mental Exaltations. We of course wrap things up with another Editor's Gas-Lamp, this time "The Fortunate Ones" from Vol. 2, No. 3 of The Baker Street Journal (OS). Easter is later this month, and we've got another Easter egg for you. Our special thanks go out to Mary Miller and Christian Mongaard for their Patreon support! Won't you join them?
