George Canyon, a local country music artist and long-time advocate for diabetes awareness
In this episode, Dr. Laura branches away from the specific subject of career fulfillment and speaks with her guest, country music star George Canyon, about spirituality and servanthood. George Canyon has recently released his memoir, My Country, and the book reveals the challenges and adventures he's faced, his determination to help others dealing with Type One diabetes, and the faith that keeps him going.George tells Dr. Laura that though his book is full of vulnerability and authenticity, he shied away from relating negative stories. He chooses positivity wherever he can because, as he says, “nobody needs to read more negativity”. The conversation delves into the challenges his teenage diagnosis of Type One diabetes brought him, how hard he worked to succeed in the music industry, and his spirituality and faith in The Creator that drives him day to day. It's a more spiritual conversation than is usually had with Dr. Laura's guests but it's not tied to any specific religion and it's a conversation full of hope that everyone can benefit from. “... we're humans, we put titles to everything - everybody has to title something, I don't know why. It's just, I guess, to make us feel more safe and conformed. Church, the title church, is a community. It's a community of people. The original churches were held in people's homes. It wasn't a big building you went to with four walls. It was a home where you got together to talk about your faith, to talk about what the Creator's done for you, to encourage each other, to pick each other up, not to be judgmental and condemn each other.” George CanyonAbout George Canyon:George Canyon rose to become one of Canada's hottest Country Music stars in the early 2000s and has won countless accolades and awards, including Juno Awards, CCMA Awards, and ECMA Awards to name a few. He has been inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame, recorded 12 albums, and was recently presented a certified Platinum Award for his debut album ‘One Good Friend'. With country hits like Just Like You, I Believe in Angels, Drinkin' Thinkin', Daughters of the Sun, I Got This, I Want You To Live, Slow Dance and many, many more. He is also a highly regarded humanitarian, a strong supporter of the military, and, most importantly, a proud father and devoted husband.Over the years George has also had the privilege of collaborating with fellow talents, a prime example being when he joined forces with multi-platinum pop and rock icon Richard Marx to produce two albums, 2008's ‘What I Do' and 2011's ‘Better Be Home Soon', the latter of which featured When Love Is All You Got, written for George by Marx and the legendary Kenny Rogers. ‘What I Do' was an enormous success, going Certified Gold during the first three weeks of release.George is so much more than an award-winning musical talent. Helping others has always been a huge priority for him, particularly for children with Diabetes and his work as a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). It's a cause close to Canyon's heart, starting from when he himself was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes at the age of 14. In addition to his work with JDRF, George is an ardent supporter of our military, having performed many times for troops overseas and even releasing a moving tribute with the single I Want You to Live, which touches on the very heartbreaking fact that in fighting for our country, some of our troops won't make it back home. The music video for the single features several real soldiers talking about their lives and careers, putting faces to the group of people working to make our country safe.Among his many identities, Canyon is also a proud Canadian and huge hockey fan, and roots for his team, the Calgary Flames, for which he just completed his 8th season singing the national anthem during the home games.Resources:Website: GeorgeCanyon.com“My Country” by George CanyonJuvenile Diabetes Research FoundationGerald Auger on InstagramEpisode 54 | Special Episode on the LiLoHia Project: with guests Gerald Auger and Sass JordanLearn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.liveFor more resources, look into Dr. Laura's organizations: Canada Career CounsellingSynthesis Psychology

Today's guest is Jim Cressman. Jim is the CEO and President at Invictus Entertainment Group, Founder and President at Big Star Recordings Inc, and music agent to some pretty profound artists including Aaron Pritchett, George Canyon, Cory Marks, and Brett Kissell. Jim has a big role and a big heart and today's topics of conversation are just as immense. In all honesty, this episode is a LOT. Jim and I talk about the pandemic and how it has influenced both of our lives - both personally and in our careers (as you can imagine, there's quite a bit to discuss here). We also talk about personal experiences with healing the body and achieving optimal health, and how traditional Western Medicine is really failing society as a whole when it comes to promoting total-body wellbeing. Jim shares his thoughts, wisdom and experiences in a way I think many may derive impactful meaning and powerful take-aways from. I encourage you to listen to this podcast with an open heart and open mind, and to take pause when you find yourself triggered - to ask yourself what story you are creating and how the thoughts and opinions shared resonate with your mind, body and soul. I ask that you use this podcast to challenge yourself to question, to hold space for alternate perspectives and to acknowledge that the opinions of others are based on their own experiential stories. We begin with a look at the Federal COVID benefit program that has been in place for the past 20 months or so. We speak with a Law Professor from the University of Calgary who brings us shocking details from a new report, which claims that billions of these ‘CERB' program dollars went into the hands of criminals. Then, it's another edition of “Motivational Monday”. We hear the personal and passionate story of Kelly Fallardeau, International Speaker, Author, and Burn Survivor. Kelly shares details of her journey, how she used ‘positive self-talk' to turn her life around, and inspire others. Finally, it's a new and local business generating a lot of ‘buzz' ... quite literally! We meet Bri Hallet, owner and creator of “Queen Colony,” a line of organic beauty and healthcare products. We ask Bri about how her business ‘came to be' and what it's like to have a working ‘bee colony' in her backyard! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Blu over Zoom audio! Country recording artist, Manny Blu will release a new EP, titled New Ink, on November 13, 2020. Manny’s debut single off the record, "Born To Ride," is now available and perfectly lays the groundwork for what is to come.Bringing to life a completely different side of the Montreal native, New Ink speaks directly to what Manny himself calls the "true heart" of the band's live shows: "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."With his amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude, Manny brings his rebellious outlaw vibe to country music, creating an original sound that makes room for his blues and rock upbringing. While influenced by Brantley Gilbert, The Cadillac Three, and Jason Aldean, each of the five tracks heard on New Ink live in an edgy new space with rock-based instrumentals at the forefront. Recorded at OmniSound Studios in Nashville and produced by Aaron Eshuis, its rock-forward approach is fitting since the title stems from one of Manny's favorite bands, Mötley Crüe, and their album New Tattoo. One look at Manny, and it's no secret that he's a fan of tattoos-but to him New Ink means more than just thinking about the next one, for him, it's the release of his inner creative expression and his new sound to the world. The first single off of New Ink, "Born To Ride," is a track about finding that 'ride or die' person who will have your back as much as you have theirs—written by top songwriters Rhett Akins, Ross Copperman, and Josh Osborne, the track debuts today with a lyric video that provides a snapshot of Manny's acclaimed live shows.Consisting of four additional tracks telling the stories of real-life through love and heartbreak, Manny's upcoming EP displays substantial growth. Not only has 2020 already been a landmark year when it comes to streaming for the up-and-coming artist, it has also led to the development of global expansion with the addition of teams in the US, Canada, and the UK."Music is one of the most powerful elements to someone's life," said Manny when talking of the story behind the EP. "I think it can make what someone is going through ok, it can motivate, and empower people–so I tried to add a little piece of each of those things into New Ink."Manny continues to bring his vibe to country music–a sound he introduced with Leave It Like It Is, his debut record (2019) that earned him thousands of new fans and presented him with the opportunity to hit the road across Canada and the US. Last spring, Manny spent two months crossing Canada while opening for George Canyon's "Hit After Hit Tour" and then headlined his Canadian tour to close out the year. Earlier this spring, Manny crossed the US and Canada on another headlining tour. Fans can expect new show announcements in the coming months.ABOUT MANNY BLU:Manny Blu has always been a fighter. Years before he crisscrossed North America as an acclaimed country singer and a true road warrior-playing nightly shows in support of his 2019 debut album Leave It Like It Is, while also sharpening the larger-than-life sound that would fill his 2020 follow-up EP New Ink, Manny spent his days in the gym, training for a career as an MMA fighter.Traveling often to Nashville from his hometown of Montreal, he began piecing together a new record–one that showcased the lessons he learned on the road. Working with producer Aaron Eshuis and hit songwriters like Josh Osborne, Rhett Atkins, and Ross Copperman, Manny Blu emerged from Nashville's OmniSound Studios with New Ink. From "Born To Ride" to "Sink," these new songs tell relatable stories about love, loss, breakups, and everything in between, rooted in an amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude."I wanted the album to sound the way we do live," says Manny. "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun."Raised as a versatile athlete who played hockey, soccer, and football before kickstarting his MMA training at 16-years-old, Manny Blu hasn't lost that fighting spirit. If anything, he's gotten stronger, learning to roll with the punches and knock down any obstacles in his path. New Ink, with its hard-hitting hooks and country-rock edge, is the soundtrack to a career on the rise–and Manny Blu is ready to deliver a knockout blow. New Ink will be available on November 13, 2020.We want to hear from you! In this week's episode, we're featuring the fourth album from Canada's Western Swing Authority: "Big Deal" (2018). Fronted by husband and wife team Shane Guse (fiddle, vocals) and Stacey Lee Guse (vocals), the Western Swing Authority is a seven-piece act based around Ontario. Their music is big, bright and appealing: much like Haggard helped bring Bob Wills to a 70s audience, the WSA take the traditions of the music pioneered by Wills and his contemporaries and present it in a way you won't hear anywhere else in 2018. Packed with fiddle breakdowns and steel solos, the WSA have plucked help from every corner of Canadian music, especially giving contemporary Canadian country stars in George Canyon, Jason McCoy and Jason Blaine a chance to sing on something a little more traditional than usual. These genre-busting collaborations will only help the propagation of this uniquely American artform. Highlights on "Big Deal" include a dynamite rendition of Hoyle Nix's "Big Ball's In Cowtown", the prohibition-esque "Swingin' From The Rafters" and my personal favourite, the straight-country heart and soul included in "This Old Bar". The music itself is delivered in an incredibly fun, infectious and accessible yet traditional manner - with a little more exposure, the WSA could be the act to bring western swing to a 21st century audience. Here's hoping!

Country star George Canyon was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 14. At the time, all he wanted to do was be a pilot and serve his country. His dream had to change, but he never gave up on flying. Just this week, and due in part to George's efforts, Canada changed their regulations, allowing people with T1D to become private pilots. George was the runner up in the 2004 version of the TV show Nashville Star, he’s had several huge albums since and a big career before, but he’s also been to medical school and has spoken out about diabetes since he was diagnosed. Stacey spoke with him at the Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Conference, where he performed for a very appreciative crowd.
From early in her career, Amy Nelson has performed at events across Canada such as the Calgary Stampede, Craven Country Jamboree, and even opened for country stars like Terri Clark and George Canyon. She has also performed internationally in the United States and in Mexico. A career highlight for Amy was performing at the Canada Day celebrations in London, England. While on stage, representing all of Canada in Trafalgar Square, she says will never forget the feeling facing a sea of people dressed in red and white. She continues on to say that performance was the first time when she was covered in goose bumps and reminded of why all her hard work is worth it. Amy never loses sight of that connection with her audience and always gives a performance to remember. Amy chats with me from Nashville about songwriitng and working on her third CD. It'll be produced by Dan Swinimer. She's also a CCMA Spotlight Performance Finalist. Tune in to hear about that & much more on this ediiton of In The Country!
Ever since he was young, it was clear that Bruin was destined to be a part of the country music world. As a baby, he would easily be mesmerized by the upbeat sound of Marty Stuart's song Hey Baby along with the tunes other popular Country music artists played on the television at the time. It was his strong connection with the music of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, though, that truly had him hooked on Country music, and ultimately inspired him to start playing. By the time he attended his first concert (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at the age of three, Bruin had already mastered airstrumming on the flyswatter and belting out his favourite tunes. At the age of nine, after showing rhythmic ability, Bruin received his first drumset; passed down from his uncle. He started drumming regularly at his church services, playing alongside his mother, the church's organist. Fast forward to present: the Saskatchewan native has performed across western Canada and even into the United States, sharing the stage with award winning country music artists such as Hey Romeo, Codie Prevost, George Canyon, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Releasing his debut album Dirt Junkie in May of 2015, Bruin was honoured to embark on a 20 day ‘Dirt Junkie Down Under’ Australian tour in January and February 2016 (thanks to the support of Creative Saskatchewan) that would see him headline the Main Stage of the Tamworth Country Music Festival - the second largest country music festival in the world! Following this tour, Bruin was also excited and humbled to be recognized by the Saskatchewan Country Music Association who nominated him for three 2016 Saskatchewan Country Music Awards for Emerging Artist, Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year for Dirt Junkie.
George Canyon released a brand new album in February 2016 called I Got This. It features the title track as the first single as well as the second single called Daughters Of The Sun. The album is available at iTunes. “I wanted to create a record that was fun to play, and exciting for the fans to listen to. It’s been a while since I’ve had an album of new original songs, and these songs put a smile on my face,” says the talented Canadian Country artist. He started the year off with a very successful cross-Canada tour called the Jekyll and Nothing To Hide Tour. In 2015, George was inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall Of Fame. Tune in to hear George discuss his latest album, working with Richard Marx, writing songs with Gord Bamford and more! Plus, you'll hear two songs from I Got This. Under a big Stetson, accompanied with a big smile, and based, under even bigger skies of Grande Prairie, Alberta, is Canada’s newest gentleman of country music, Brad Sims. Of Metis heritage, Brad’s call to immerse himself in all things country occurred when attending an annual Bud Country Fever Music Festival. After sneaking backstage to gain main stage access to watch the performers, Brad’s realization of one day doing exactly the same thing resonated; he was 10 years old. Fast forward and a short 8 years later, Brad’s musical journey commenced with a band called Nowhere Road. Competing in various and well known vocal competitions had Brad take center stage and be awarded the winning position for Duke’s Entertainer of the Year (2010), the Alberta/BC Talent Contest (2013) as well as garnering an impressive third place win in The Next Nashville North Star, at the Calgary Stampede (2014). Inspired by musical influences including Marty Stuart, George Strait, Mark Chesnutt, Dwight Yoakum and George Jones. Canadian country trailblazers. Terri Clark, George Canyon, Dean Brody and Bobby Wills, to name a few, also ignite Brad, whose songwriting process begins with creating the melody, followed by the lyrics. Brad is excited for his upcoming self-titled CD - featuring the just released single Blue Jeans - with special guest appearances including Chris Byrne, Bart McKay, Russell Broom and Chad Melchert with songwriting collaborations including George Canyon, Phil O’Donnell, and Johnny Reid and produced by Johnny Gasparic and Graham Sharkey of 2-time CCMA Award winning studio, MCC Recordings (Calgary).
Sky Wyatt has already stoked a buzz in his native Vancouver, BC area with appearances at the Plaza of the Nations main stage at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, showcasing at the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference, and making it into the final round of the Red Robinson Talent Showdown at the Pacific National Exhibition and the British Columbia Youth Talent Search. He has also written songs with such talents as country singers Patricia Conroy (whose material has been cut by The Rankin Family, Emerson Drive and more), Jesse Tucker (who plays guitar in the Brett Eldredge band) and Willie Mack (whose cuts include Sara Evans and George Canyon). He hails from Deep Cove in North Vancouver, and grew up in a musical family with a father who taught guitar and mother from a large singing family. A range of styles played around his childhood home from rock to soul, jazz and funk plus such country-folk acts as The Eagles, America and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. During his high school years, Sky appeared and sang in musical theater productions. While in college he started taking vocal lessons just for fun - and singing quickly became a primary passion. A vocal coach urged him to explore all genres of music, and on hearing Tim McGraw’s “Red Rag Top”, Sky became hooked on Country music. Sky's first radio single "Wild Side" was released to Country radio in August 2015.

Their musical bond is as strong as their small town roots: Twin Kennedy, comprised of West Coast sisters Carli and Julie Kennedy, have been making music together since they could talk. Born and raised in the small town of Powell River, British Columbia, the sister duo grew up perfecting their sibling harmonies and dynamic live performances, while making their name known throughout their small community as a family band. Growing up in such a musically infused family, it is no wonder that these sisters crafted their sound through a unique fusion of their background in country, folk, jazz and classical music. With years of classical training, including their Bachelors Degrees in Music Performance from the University of Victoria, the sisters have found their home in country music. With Carli on vocals and guitar, and Julie on vocals and violin, these petite powerhouses will fill your soul with joy and warmth through their seamless harmonies and heartfelt songwriting. Having released two EPs - and receiving seven BCCMA Award nominations since 2012 - as Carli & Julie Kennedy, these sisters are set to debut their first album as Twin Kennedy on April 7th. Produced by multiple CCMA and JUNO award winning artist George Canyon and renowned producer Graham Sharkey, the album "It's A Love Thing" is a beautifully honest account of the ebb and flow of the navigation through love and life.

Country artist MIKE TRUDELL is preparing to make his mark on the country music scene with a new album, new stage show, along with a renewed passion enthusiasm. Born in Elliot Lake, Ontario, this Northern singer/songwriter is no stranger to the Canadian country music scene having started his musical journey as a lead guitarist for Juno-nominated artist John Landry. A gig backing up country superstar George Canyon prompted the singer to ask Mike if he was doing this full time. Mike said no, he was not sure if this was the life for him. “I was thinking of making EMS my life’s work because I like helping others in need. I got that from my Mom who passed away at a very young age. No matter how sick she was she always had time to help someone in need.” Growing up, Mike was surrounded by music. He played the piano, his brother played the guitar while family members sang and danced. He was also exposed to his parents' choice of tunes. "They always had a Buck Owens eight-track tape in the old Chevy," explains Mike. “I starting listening to country songs when I realized they were full of great guitar licks and lyrics that told stories. I was hooked.” In a great display of discipline, Mike backed away from opportunities thrown his way to determine a musical career path with proper direction and planning. He realized he needed a team around him with a product that he was proud of and could support with live performances. Enter Canadian songwriter and producer Gil Grand. Gil helped Mike pick the tunes for his new album (Gil wrote a couple of them too) and produced the project. The first single called Do Ya Wanna is a radio friendly song that is sure to give Mike Trudell a solid shot at country radio. You will wanna add his album to your music collection!
