Konnichiwa! We're back from Japan and so excited to share our trip to Tokyo Disneyland with you! We did so much in the short day and a half we were there. (The other day and a half were spent at Disney Sea. Stay tuned for that episode next week!)   Environment-wise, the Tokyo Disneyland park was like an even cuter, less commercialized version of the American parks. Duffy the Disney Bear is king and Donald is his royal knight...sorry, Mickey, but you deserve a break from all the hard work. Duffy and Donald merchandise are everywhere from headbands to purses to keychains.    The setup of the park is similar to Disneyland in California or the Magic Kingdom in Florida, which makes navigating the park a little more intuitive. Language-wise, there are some cast members who speak English, but even those who don't are easy enough to communicate with (for things like ordering food or asking directions) as long as you don't have any special needs. The Japanese are excellent at using emphatic hand signals that really help to convey their points.     Ride-wise, Disneyland has some really cool, original rides like Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek! and Pooh's Hunny Hunt (yes, I spelled that correctly). If you ever go to this park, you have to ride Hunny Hunt! The trackless ride system is incredible! The cars weave in and out of each other in near-Broadway-choreographed fashion. Monsters, Inc. is a fun ride that adopts the style of the old shooting gallery: you shoot at a target and the target moves. There are some serious cool animatronics in there, too!   Also, a pretty cool experience unique to this park your ability to go into Cinderella Castle to see the dioramas and sit on the royal throne.   In addition to these new rides, many of the classics got really fun and interesting upgrades. For example, "it's a small world" not only includes the same animatronics as the American parks, but also includes many familiar faces from the Disney movies.   One of the best upgrades to the Japanese parks were the abundance of and quality of shows. Judy and Nick's Jumpin' Splash takes place directly in front of the castle and is a dance party with a (much needed) splash zone! Also, One Man's Dream 2 features many of the Disney characters you know and love dancing and singing to both original songs and songs from the movies.   And, of course, the food! Popcorn and popcorn containers were the biggest story in both of the parks. The tins ranged from alien claw machines to Stitch to Steamboat Willie on his boat!    Thank you so much for lending us your ears! Tune in next week to hear our experience at Tokyo DisneySea! If not, we’re about to change that with this character-specific episode. In it, we’ll tell you everything from who Duffy is to how he came to be and discuss his popularity explosion overseas.   In America, you can find him on some merch or even buy a bear and some outfits to change him into, but Duffy’s an institution that rivals Mickey in the Asian parks. There, he has a whole posse including a girlfriend and several different animal friends including a gremlin-looking cat, an adorable dancing bunny, a baking puppy, and a ukelele-playing turtle.   This episode will have you wanting to join or at least experience the Duffy-mania. I’m pretty sure StellaLou will be accompanying us home on our long flight back from Japan.

The Season of the Force is coming to Disneyland November 16th and we have all the details in this week's episode of Inside The Mouse Castle. As excitement builds for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December and the January groundbreaking of Star Wars Land, the Star Wars Launch Bay will open in the old Innoventions building in Tomorrowland. There will be plenty to preview of the upcoming Star Wars films and eventually, we assume, the park expansion. Also in the Launch Bay will be the obligatory Star Wars character meet-and-greets. Next door, a new Space Mountain overlay, Hyperspace Mountain, will rocket guests through an X-wing Figher battle. Star Tours will get an upgrade as well, adding new show elements based on The Force Awakens. The Force is strong with today's show. Here's what else we have: The Star Wars Land expansion at Disneyland means extended ride closures during construction. Everything on the Rivers of America including the Mark Twain, Columbia and Tom Sawyer will be shut down for more than a year beginning January 11, 2016. Likewise Fantasmic! and the Disneyland Railroad. While much of the Internet is speculating on what the new train and river configurations will be when the dust settles and Star Wars emerges, Tim and Anthony offer their short-term take on what no train, no Big Thunder Trail and no Fantasmic! will do to crowd control. We don't think it will be pretty. Disneyland is extending its Diamond Celebration until September 2016, which means the resort will turn 61 while it's still turning 60. Websites that offer dining reservation services at Disney resorts (usually for a fee) are coming under fire by Disney. Disney Dining Buddy is the first site to suspend activity after receiving a "request" by the Mouse to stop. The Indiana Jones-referential Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar has opened at Walt Disney World's Disney Springs (no longer Downtown Disney). We want to go there. Garrett Hedlund (Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy) says a Tron 3 film may not be dead on the grid after all. Maybe. Duffy the Disney Bear is bidding farewell to Epcot. This pleases us.
