Fellow music lovers, you are in for a treat, because for this episode we are diving head-first into a full-on rock concert of epic proportions. Join us for the 13th annual SMooCH benefit show at The Showbox in Seattle, where our community, this year alone, has raised over $2.2 million dollars for Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We've mentioned SMooCH before on the Nordy Pod way back in episode 3 with Megan Jasper, and again in episode 29 with Dr. Jeff Sperring, but we've never actually taken you to the show itself. If you're new to the Nordy Pod; SMooCH, which stands for Seattle Musicians for Children's Hospital, is an event that was started by Pete Nordstrom and his wife, Brandy, in 2012 after their own experience needing the care of Seattle Children's Hospital. In this episode you'll learn more about the Uncompensated Care program from return Nordy Pod guest, CEO of Seattle Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Sperring, you'll hear from one of the many patient families that have been directly impacted by the support of the Uncompensated Care fund, and you'll hear from Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub-Pop Records, who talks about what it takes to pull together a mind-blowing rock concert like SMooCH. On top of all that you'll get to hear from a few of the incredible musicians that agreed to come play the event this year. Since the very first show SMooCH has consistently managed to bring iconic artists to the Showbox, like Macklemore, Modest Mouse, Ben Gibbard, Iron and Wine, The New Pornographers, The Head and the Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Phantogram, and so many more. This year's event is no different. Prepare yourself for this all-star lineup featuring Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Duff McKagen, of Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, and the headliner, Nude Dragons, which are the reunited members from Soundgarden. We're very grateful to all of the musicians who showed up to donate their time and talents, we're grateful for those who helped organize the event, and we're super proud of our community that has donated to date over $30 million dollars to the Uncompensated Care fund. Thanks for tuning in to episode 77. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. Doug Martsch in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.builttospill.com Martsch's first band was Farm Days, with Andy Capps and Brett Nelson in the early 1980s. His second band was Treepeople, with whom he released three albums and two EPs. He has been the lead singer and guitarist of Built to Spill since 1992 The band signed to Sub Pop in October 2021. On September 9, 2022, the band released their first album of new material since 2015, When the Wind Forgets Your Name.

Low Profile with Markly Morrison

If you don't know already, La Luz is killing it these days.  They got the thick harmonies, they got the deep twang in the guitar department, and everybody in the band brings a hell of a lot to the table.  Outside the band, they all have other music projects that are keeping it fresh.   The solo projects of guitarist Shana Cleveland and keyboardist Alice Sandahl are glorious in their own right, as well as bassist Lena Simon's new studio project Kairos Creature Club and drummer Audrey Johnson's Fresno-based band Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries. When all those forces combine, it really hits.  While on tour this past summer, they made a detour in Olympia and came into the KAOS air studio earlier to give us a show.  I brought them some instruments so they didn't have to unload all their gear, so in addition to the interview, they're doing a special unplugged set with celestette, shaker, and dual acoustic guitars.  This episode is a co-production of Thurston Community Media and KAOS 89.3FM and is adapted from a video recording, which will eventually be made available on this episode's web page.  Get cozy, there's a lot of music on the show today. For the month of December, I'm doing a patreon drive.  Folks who support this show will be helping out me and my family, chipping in with the costs of doing this program, and making a huge difference... a little goes a long way.  And as a bonus, everybody who is a part of the Low Profile Patreon community donating $5 or more per month gets an exclusive mixtape- yeah, a physical cassette - featuring tunes that have never been released outside of Low Profile, with artists like Donnie and Joe Emerson, Stephen Steinbrink, Doug Martsch, Ashley Eriksson, Lavender Country and more.  I'll be sending the tapes out at the end of the month, and you'll get yours right in the beginning of 2023.  To support the show, visit patreon.com/lowprofile and sign up for flexible monthly donations. Also, since this episode was recorded, Lena has left the band La Luz after 8 years.  We wish her the best with her new endeavors in Florida! The artwork for this episode is by Lani Morrison.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of fantastic songwriters from the indie-rock world: Kenny Becker and Doug Martsch. Martsch I'm guessing our listeners will know as the chief songwriter and sole consistent member of Built to Spill, the band that made Boise, Idaho famous. Built to Spill has been an ongoing concern since the early 1990s, releasing a ton of great albums at a fairly leisurely pace, including stone classics like There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Keep it Like a Secret. The Built to Spill lineup has mutated a bunch of times over the years, and that's never been more true than for the genesis of their latest album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Writing and recording the album was done with members of the Brazilian band Orua, but the latest live lineup features Martsch alongside a pair of incredibly talented young women from up-and-coming bands: Prism Bitch's Teresa Esguerra and Blood Lemon's Melanie Radford. They bring a new energy to this storied band. Check out the hilarious video for “Fool's Gold” from When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Goon has a much shorter history than Built to Spill, having really started as Kenny Becker's solo project around 2015. Along with some college friends, Becker recorded Goon's dreamy debut album Heaven is Humming. But that lineup was slowly lost to attrition and now, like Martsch, Becker has an entirely new set of players alongside a brand new album, Hour of Green Evening. This new one was recorded in a more bandlike setting, as you'll hear in this chat, and Becker even had some help from Alex Fischel of Spoon. Check out the sweet and tender “Emily Says” from that new record. In this chat, Becker and Martsch talk about recording in a studio versus recording at home; they talk about finding those eureka moments in the studio, Built to Spill's recent cover of a Cate Le Bon song, and getting musical ideas from TikTok. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Doug Martsch and Kenny Becker for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all of the other Talkhouse network shows and written pieces at Talkhouse.com. For the second collection of highlights from the Scherler Sundays 2022 concert and interview series, we have a document from an indie rock lover's dream: Doug Martsch of Built to Spill and John Atkins of 764-HERO, and more recently, his new band Sun Breaks. Doug and John each play intimate acoustic sets behind the old Carnegie Library in Olympia. For this show, I interviewed the two of them together since they have a bit of mutual history in their formative years in their respective music careers- you'll hear about that in a bit. I'm including about 20 minutes from each performance on today's show, and it was really difficult to choose which songs. Doug had a terrific selection of familiar cover tunes, including songs by Cat Stevens and Mazzy Star that aren't included here. If you want to hear the complete, unedited show you can find a link to that at patreon.com/lowprofile.Doug Martsch is best known as the man behind Built To Spill, Boise's undisputed kings of indie rock since the early 1990s, Treepeople before that, and a solo album called “Now You Know” released 20 years ago. Built to Spill also toured as the late Daniel Johnson's backup band, and shortly thereafter released the album "Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnson" in 2020. But my first exposure to his music was through his band with Olympia's Calvin Johnson on K Records, The Halo Benders. His wry lyrics and virtuosity on the guitar have made a life-long fan out of me from day one.Three Magnets Brewing Company, this season's collaborator, has also released several beers inspired by Built to Spill albums/songs, and were absolutely thrilled when Doug agreed to perform at Scherler Sundays! Built To Spill has a new album, When the Wind Forgets Your Name, out this Fall.  He plays a tune from it here, along with some other BTS favorites and a few surprising cover tunes.John Atkins' band 764-HERO toured with Built to Spill in the early 1990s when they were label mates on Up! Records, and this commonality inspired the idea to interview Doug and John together for this show.  John's music is cemented in the minds of indie fans in the Northwest and beyond.  Following 764-HERO, the ever-evolving Atkins' other projects Hush Harbor, and currently, Sun Breaks, have continued to create emotionally charged, contemplative records.  Today, you'll hear some favorite tunes from across the past few decades in John's catalog. This episode was recorded and engineered by Robin Carmosino behind the historic Carnegie Library in Olympia, WA on June 26th, 2022.

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2022 68:12

For the 25th anniversary of Built to Spill's astonishing third album, PERFECT FROM NOW ON, Doug Martsch joins us for a detailed look at how the record was made. After Built to Spill released their first two records on indie labels, they ended up signing with Warner Bros. for their third album. Signing with a major label left Martsch feeling conflicted but inspired to experiment in the studio and was determined to make an ambitious album that deserved to be heard by a larger audience. Martsch's original vision was to change the lineup for the third time and play the majority of the instruments himself with Peter Lansdowne on drums. After reconnecting with producer, Phil Ek, in Seattle, they recorded the first version of the album but were dissatisfied with the results. Martsch then decided to bring bassist, Brett Nelson, back, along with new drummer, Scott Plouff, and record the album a second time. After Phil Ek drove with the tapes from Seattle to Boise, they found that the tapes had been damaged. The band ended up recording the album a third time and brought in collaborators, Brett Netson, John McMahon and Robert Roth to help fill out the arrangements. From envisioning a classic rock sound to the difficulties of analog recording in the nineties to combining ideas to make collage-style songs to stealing lyrics from his wife to the never-ending quest for perfection, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

Doug Martsch is the founder of influential indie/classic rock band Built To Spill. This interview was taken over the phone as Doug sat on his porch in Boise Idaho. LIsten for the part where a squirrel falls from a tree and then bounds to safety. Dig in to the history of his other bands, Treepeople and Farm Days. Hear all about BTS's new rhythm section and the new record. This was killer and i think you should listen. I guarantee you will be grabbing for them Built To Spill records as soon as you finish. Interviewed at Hollow Earth Studios by Jaybo August 20th 2013
