"Face Of 68" The Connecticut-born Peter Holsapple isn't hiding his age--his new album Face Of 68 proudly blares it in its title and though the 68 is representative of his current chronology, like our old friend Billy Bragg, he knows that number is a temporary thing and another waits in front of it. So, to honor this moment in his life, Holsapple's third solo album is a celebration of a year in a man's life and it couldn't sound more life-affirming. The d.B.'s frontman, whose output with that beloved outfit include classics like Stand For Decibels and Like This remain timeless classics, is one of music's busiest characters. Here's a quick and partial glance at his rock and roll resume': In the late-'80s, he was a full-time fifth member of R.E.M., He was an auxillary member of Hootie and the Blowfish for nearly 30 years, he was in the indie pop supergroup the Continental Drifters with members of The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Cowsills, and he's currently playing with The Paranoid Style, the reformed d.B.'s and solo shows on his own. Holsapple's Face Of 68 is one of 2025's very best; a smoldering batch of songs that are filled with jangle, shimmer and stomp, Holsapple and his power trio of Robert Sledge of the Ben Folds Five and Rob Ladd of The Connells, play with confidence and nerve. This is a dynamic album with heavy grooves, pop hooks and melodic muscle and the fact of the matter is The Face Of 68 has never sounded better. www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast
Ben Folds Five cut a swathe in the 90s like no one else. This boisterous three-piece with a lead piano instead of a guitar sounded like no other and had three successful albums to show for it. Eventually the band broke up and Ben went on to be a celebrity in his own right while drummer Darren Jessee and bassist Rob Sledge were less visible. Darren joins us this week to discuss what his career looks like. In addition to working with bands like The War On Drugs and Hiss Messenger Service, he's also put out a few solo albums that sound very different from his old band (check out 2023's Central Bridge for proof). We discuss both sides of his career and much more. Enjoy! www.darrenjessee.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

30 years ago should not be nearly as long ago as it is. To me and my fellow Gen-Xer pal Dustin Prince, 1995 seems like just a few years ago. Even though some of it is a blur, we do have vivid nostalgic memories of that fine year, and musically speaking, 1995 ranks up there with just about any year you can name. As it happens to come in the middle of the decade, the music of '95 is a great encapsulation of the previous 5 years and the following 5 years. It's the most 90's year ever! Dustin Prince, affable fellow that he is, was kind enough to help us with a fun look back with Top Ten Albums Of 1995. What is power pop? The Who's Pete Townshend coined the term in a May 1967 interview promoting their latest single "Pictures of Lily". He said: "Power pop is what we play—what the Small Faces used to play, and the kind of pop the Beach Boys played in the days of 'Fun, Fun, Fun' which I preferred." So take one part Moptop Beatles melodies and harmonies, add in the powerful punch of The Who and The Kinks , mix in some great songs about unrequited love and voila, power pop is born. Despite the persistent pattern of great power pop bands being criminally under-loved, this hearty genre has had a long shelf life and still gets love to this day. Brent Stranathan and Jeremy Levy of the great power pop band Near Beer join to help ATTT scratch the surface of this beloved genre. Picks 10-6 are revealed in the first of many volumes of Top Ten Essential Power Pop Bands. Viva power pop!Near Beer is in your face on stage and in your earholes on your stereo. This holiday season, the singer/songwriter, piano player, and all around musical overachiever Ben Folds released an album called Sleigher (in stores now from New West Records). It's not so much a "Ben Folds Christmas record" as it is a Ben Folds record set at Christmas. For this episode, which makes its debut on Christmas Eve, Paul chats with Ben about what went into the album, and detours into dogs, inflatable lawn Santas, the magic of Burt Bacharach, and what it means to be a human music maker in the age of Artificial Intelligence. When you think of music from New Jersey, you typically think of Bruce Springsteen. Or perhaps Bon Jovi. But most people don't immediately see folk music come to mind. Jackson Pines may not be trying to change that, but they're certainly doing their best to make New Jersey folk a more widely known and understood subset of the Garden State's musical DNA. This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) caught up with the two founders of Jackson Pines, Joe Makoviecki and James Black to get a history lesson on New Jersey folk, talk about the latest music from the group and hear stories from their travels. The band has even played on stage with Pete Seeger, giving them full-on folk credentials. Makoviecki turned out to be sort of a New Jersey folk historian – not unexpected from a teacher's son – so this episode wound up being one of the more educational we've ever had. Falls also asks why vinyl record collectors get upset about people using the term “vinyl” as a noun. So for all the hall monitors out there, this part will piss you off. Falls also tells his Ron White-like story of being “thrown out of a bar in New York City,” and, of course, Frank and Falls share their pickin' the grinnin' choices for good music for you to check out this week. Welcome to an unusual episode of Constellation. It is I, Colin! Some time ago, I expressed that I'd like to pursue 'themed' episodes on occasion, and indeed we pursued such a program with episode 60, which was purely political in nature. This time around, I wanted to cover another of my deep passions -- music -- and I wanted to do so with the perfect companion: My best friend, Ramon. Ramon is the writer and musician behind all of Last Stand's theme music, yes, and it's true that we met as freshmen at Northeastern due to our shared love of 311. But, in his own right, he's also an accomplished and experienced working musician with excellent insight into the business, who knows obscure bands and records like I know Vita games, and who's currently toiling away on a new project of his own. We touch on a lot of topics, and we do so loosely, so... no timestamps (sorry). Click play to listen to us wax about Coachella's lame crowds and the grind of touring, the rise of the mega-festival, how the '90s helped fashion our musical tastes, the downside to the streaming economy, how the pandemic affected live music, and so much more. We discuss bands like No Doubt, Limp Bizkit, Blur, Ben Folds Five, and the Deftones, and touch on some non-music fare, too, like pro wrestling and baseball. Please enjoy. In this episode, John and Stewart sit down with producer, engineer, musician, song writer, studio owner, and the Godfather of Jangle Pop, the one and only, Mitch Easter. Mitch has always been and continues to be a staple of the Indie Rock scene in North Carolina and beyond. First operating out of Drive in Studio located in his parents' garage, and in 1994 moving to his current studio, the Fidelitorium. Mitch has worked with a laundry list of seminal artists, including R.E.M., Helium, Pavement, Wilco, Ben Folds Five, Pylon, and Polvo. He's also an active musician and writer, releasing music for almost a decade with his band "Let's Active" and currently as a solo artist. In this episode Mitch discusses building, operating, and outfitting his recording studios, the joys and perils of tracking to analog tape, producing the first R.E.M. records, and why it's not always a good idea to fix everything in a recording.

In this episode we travel south of heaven where Hell awaits to spend seasons in the abyss and reign in blood with our undisputed attitude that God hates us all in the Chri$t illusion. Without divine intervention we see a world painted blood in repentless diabolus musica and tell the story of Slayer's debut album, Show No Mercy. In 1981 Huntington Park California guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman met at an audition and realised they were into the same stuff. Living only just around the corner was like-minded bass player and singer Tom Araya. All they needed to create the loudest, heaviest, fastest and most satany band ever was a double kickarse drummer. Then suddenly there was a knock at Kerry King's door. 16 year old Dave Lombardo had been told there was another long haired disreputable type in the area. So the plucky, pizza delivery man went and introduced himself. The original, the classic and the most persistent line up was complete. We will pick up the story there and tell you how that debut album came to be. It's hard to imagine a piano-led trio playing power-pop and 70s singer-songwriter influenced songs making headway in the sea of sorrow that was the first half of the 90s. Maybe it's better Ben Folds Five made their debut in 1995, when labels abandoned looking for the next Pearl Jam or Nirvana and went after anyone with a radio-friendly song that could pair with an MTV video. Boasting Billy Joel and Elton John-style piano flourishes over fuzzed out basslines and active drums, the trio move deftly through a dozen tracks of "punk rock for sissies" with smarts and savvy, keeping the songs tight with memorable melodies throughout. Though they would shoot into the mainstream on their follow-up, the self-titled debut effort shows the band had the songwriting chops from the start. We tend to think more of the guitar as a rock and roll instrument, but Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Fats Domino were a big part of the early sound of rock and roll. While there are plenty of great rock piano players, that lead guy or gal mostly tends to be playing a six-string. In the 70s and 80s, the big piano frontmen were Billy Joel and Elton John – hugely popular with what they did, but much (though not all) of it was balladry. Where were the trouble-makers and the pisstakers behind the 88s? One of them was hiding out in North Carolina. Welcome to episode 171 of Love That Album. By 2000, Ben Folds Five had broken up, leaving behind three incredible albums of “punk music for sissies” (Ben's alleged description of the band). They'd created songs both raucous and tender, angry and loving, serious and funny. In 2001, Ben Folds released his first solo album “Rockin' The Suburbs” (recorded in Adelaide), and he plays and sings nearly everything. Once again, he aimed for your funny bone, but he also told stories that could break your heart. These stories showed once again that Folds was a master of melody, harmony and was very literate. For this episode, I am joined by the host and “numbers girl” of the wonderful All Time Top Ten podcast, Ben Eisen and Shannon Hurley. We sit around the virtual table discussing Folds' techniques in composition and arrangement, his potty mouth, the seeming contrast between the man who could write both The Luckiest and Song For The Dumped, and real life stories from the suburbs about everyday people brought to life in this collection of short stories – love spurned, love embraced, parenthood, mental health, and cussing on the mic. My huge thanks to both Ben and Shannon for being such great partners for this discussion about a performer who we all love. We never even mention the one song seemingly everyone knows….because Folds is so much more than that one song. I won't let it be 3 years before Ben and Shannon rock the mics with me on LTA again. We tend to think more of the guitar as a rock and roll instrument, but Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Fats Domino were a big part of the early sound of rock and roll. The standard guitar tuning is only a suggestion! Joe talked about Mellotron, Cubase and Pro Tools, creative guitar tunings, recording piano and drums, training your ear for eq, headphones vs speakers, home studios and the sound of drywall vs volume. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Joe Pisapia a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his work as a member of Guster and k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang. He co-produced and co-wrote Guster's 2006 release, Ganging Up On the Sun, an album that cracked Billboard's Top 25 and was one of the best selling internet albums of the year. He did the same on the band's 2010 Easy Wonderful. He produced and penned the title track for Lang's 2011 album, Sing It Loud, and acted as music director for the accompanying tour. As a producer and mixer Joes credits include: Ben Folds Five's, The Hush Kids, Zac Clark, Drew Holcolmb, Chuck Mead, Josh Rouse, Courtney Jaye, Matt Wertz, William Tyler, The Silver Seas and The Pierces and when the Grammy Award-winning band Fun needed orchestral recording for its Grammy performance, they called on Joe. Originally from New Jersey Joe moved to Nashville with his band Joe Mark's Brother in the 90s with whom he has made beautiful sounding records and Joe has continued to record as a solo artist producing from his own studio Middle Tree in East Nashville. His 2002 release Daydreams was given four stars and called “stellar” by AllMusic.com. Ron Sexsmith called 2015's Nightvision, “amazing” and the “best thing” he's “heard in a long time.” In 2016 Pisapia collaborated with singer/ songwriter Kate York for the duet E.P. “Kate York And Joe Pisapia.” and in 2018 Joe released two full length solo albums. “Connection” and “Cosmic Christmas”. In 2019 Pisapia recorded his first instrumental album, “Imbolc.” For a 2020 release of the album, he made music “videos,” which consisted of him making some of his favorite comfort foods. Joe also produced much of, and mixed all of Pam Tillis' “Looking For A Feeling.” Tillis cut Pisapia's song “Better Friends,” which was originally released on his solo album, “Connection.” NPR's Ann Powers singled out Tillis' version of “Better Friends” calling it a “quintessential country song.” Also in 2019 Joe produced Jillette Johnson's “It's A Beautiful Day And I Love You,” and was part of the live ensemble whom recorded the album “Outside Child” by Allison Russell, produced by Dan Knobler which Joe described as “tantamount to a holy experience.” THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.native-instruments.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off! https://lewitt.link/rockstars https://www.Spectra1964.com https://MacSales.com/rockstars https://iZotope.com use code ROCK10 to get 10% off any individual plugin! https://www.adam-audio.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Y5ypkRrlcKQWcy6fPjgX8?si=dec7efe6473e4d00 If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/425
This week I can't believe it, but it's Mr Jack Docherty. Yes that one! Jack who famously hosted the UK's answer to Letterman in the late 90s and starred in the brilliant sketch show 'Absolutely' joins me for a chat about his career in television and how he deals with fame. I try and work out how I managed to get into the audience of both 'Mr Don & Mr George' and 'The Jack Docherty Show' before the internet age and ponder if it might be Jack who curated my musical taste after introducing audiences to Ben Folds Five and The Divine Comedy. Darren Jessee is a gifted singer-songwriter and troubadour whose captivating melodies and poignant lyrics have earned him a dedicated following in the world of indie and folk music. Darren's songwriting prowess was evident as the drummer for the critically acclaimed band Ben Folds Five. The band's fusion of alternative rock and piano-driven pop produced hits like "Brick" and "Song for the Dumped," and gained the band a loyal fan base. After he departed from Ben Folds Five, he formed the band Hotel Lights. Formed in 2000, Hotel Lights released a series of albums that allowed Jessee to explore his songwriting in greater depth. Hotel Lights' music, often characterized by its contemplative themes and heartfelt narratives, has struck a chord with fans who appreciate Jessee's ability to craft songs that are both introspective and universally relatable. His enduring commitment to his craft and his ability to create music that touches the soul and speaks to the heart make him a respected figure in the singer-songwriter genre. Darren stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith about Hotel Lights, his solo career, and the release of his new album, Central Bridge. Born in London, Theo Adler began playing piano and guitar at the age of five and later started writing songs after hearing Ben Folds Five's Whatever And Ever Amen. Inspired by the likes of Ian Dury, Rolling Stones, Gorillaz, Jungle and Radiohead, Theo weaves his own spin into the songs and recordings he makes. Speaking of ‘Old City Souls', he says, “I wrote this thinking that some things can be better expressed through music than words. The main riff is a major/minor riff, expressing that feeling. With the drums we wanted to go for something fast and I was hoping to go down the drum and bass route, as I was a teenage fan of the genre” Since he was young, Theo has been making music and trying to find new areas in his writing which personally gave him excitement/fulfilment. “I would call it a brit-rock fusion,” continues Theo about the forthcoming EP. “I listen to anything really and am always finding elements of those that I like, too many that I can't list them. Being passionate about production myself, I finished school with a couple hundred demos made using Logic Pro 9, which I was eager to show to anyone I could” After travelling the likes of Germany and South East Asia, the EP has been written over the course of five years. In 2019, Theo started collaborating with producer Luke Potashnick at his new studio The Wool Hall in Somerset. Previously occupied by Tears for Fears and Van Morrison, The Wool Hall has also seen the likes of The Smiths, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones and Paul Weller passing through. Theo continues, “I was lucky enough to be introduced to Luke Potashnick- a fellow South London native- and I was instantly smitten by his musicality and his sonic style. We made an initial demo together that turned out great and once Luke had set up in Somerset at his new studio, we got to work on this EP” “We recorded about half of the songs before I needed to go back to keep working, making ends meet in London teaching piano and guitar. During this time I travelled to Thailand for a couple of weeks, which really inspired me, and wrote a few songs - about three of those ended up being in this EP. What was really enjoyable was experiencing the spin Luke added to them” With a broad blend of genres, Theo's music is truly a marvellous mixture of some of the greats. Storytelling and creating a unique musical fusion, his music is a better version of himself that inspires others to do the same. Upbeat piano chords, distorted bass guitar and well-crafted harmonies was exactly what I needed when I stumbled upon the trio known as Ben Folds Five in 1995. The 90s music scene was always reminding us to expect the unexpected, and by the time this band hit their sophomore release titled 'Whatever and Ever Amen,' they delivered the perfect blend of humor and heart that created a timeless classic.
Our guest this week is Darren Jessee, a singer/songwriter and drummer. In the '90s, he played drums in Ben Folds Five, and he's worked with a number of previous Transmissions guests, including Sharon Van Etten and Hiss Golden Messenger, as well as others like The War on Drugs, Josh Rouse, and Chris Stamey. In 2004, he founded a band called Hotel Lights, and in 2018, he began releasing music under his own name. His latest is called Central Bridge, released earlier this year. On this episode of Transmissions, Darren joins us for a freewheeling talk about influences, lyrics, creative process, and his time on the road with Ben Folds Five. We discuss a wide range of artists—Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, Gordon Lightfoot, and spend a lot of time reflecting on Neil Young, who Ben Folds Five toured with in the 1990s. Along the way, we inspect the notion of how songs change and shape our views, the tenor of the culture wars back in the ‘90s, and the value of occasionally overdoing it. Back in 2022, songwriter Lincoln Barr got in touch, writing a personal note in which he expressed an appreciation for what we do here at Aquarium Drunkard. "Listening to the topics that come up in your conversations, I can't help but recognize a kindred spirit out there in the desert.” Since then, Barr and Transmissions host Jason P. Woodbury have gone back and forth via email, discussing spirituality, art, poetry, Ireland, Sinéad O'Connor, NRBQ, psychedelia, personal work, and much more. And now, they finally link up for a proper podcast discussion. Though their conversation was shaded by the passing of O'Connor, a shared favorite, they covered lots of ground additionally, waxing on mysticism, personal exploration, and Barr's incredible album, Forfeit the Prize. For Ben Folds, coming back on the scene with a new studio album feels like a breeze, literally:“I Feel like the expectations are lowered but I have the wind on my back”.In June 2023 Ben releases What Matters Most, his fifth studio album and his first in over six years, almost an ice age in today's breathless music biz. But part of the reason and the joy it has taken him so damn long to make, is a focus on the craft that is part of Folds' raison d'être as a musician some three decades into a professional career.“I have carried a tradition of craft, that is not easily come by, in an era when it was always going away, until now” It might sound cocky to say that this is a lesson in songwriting but I dunno, it is.”This is coming from someone who in the past decade has committed part of his career to promoting and campaigning for better music education. Come to think of it, a conversation with Ben Folds is a music education class in itself. His role as music scholar and teacher is now part of his legacy but his contribution to music is easily underestimated. For starters he sandblasted a music scene that in the mid-90s was dominated by grunge, Britpop and pretty soulless boy & girl band pop. And he did it with a fucking piano. Aided and abetted of course by belting bass (Robert Sledge) and drums (Darren Jessee) combo that made up Ben Folds Five - a refreshingly guitar-free rock band. After the trio disbanded following the usual music industry roller coaster ride (a familiar story beautifully told in Fold's 2019 book A Dream About Lightning Bugs) Folds went solo - sometimes quite literally. He made ‘sustainable touring' a thing, by going on the road with himself and a piano. That's something now essential for bands in the mid-tier - the so called “working class musician” - to tour with a minimalist set up. Fold's truly took to it - improvising and bantering with the audience - even creating a song (Bitches Ain't Shit) that became a sort of regrettable classic. He found the experience scary but took his inspiration from James Booker. “I was playing standing places - rock venues. I was shaking in my boots the first time I went out on tour like that, but I felt the need to do it”.Folds is a pioneering independent artist. He called the creative shots even when first signed to a major label imprint with Ben Folds Five. He paid for vinyl masters to some of his albums knowing full well it would come out of his royalty account. He was an early adopter of the direct to fan model with his Patreon site, recently expanded to include a private Discord channel. It's very much the modern fan-centred business model for up & coming artists these days. Through it all, Folds is one of those artists that can always rely on the ability to write a song. It's something that has seen him through the thick & thin years as he transitioned from a band to a solo career and then later as he expanded into soundtracks and orchestral works. That songcraft is firmly intact on What Matters Most on songs such as Back To Anonymous, Winslow Gardens and Kristine From the 7th Grade. But Folds can strategize the biz side too these days, and his plan is to make this new album an event. “I know we're making movies in a way when we make records but I wanted to make a record that you could date on all counts. The event is powerful, because you are either expressing an ideal, a design - or you are expressing an event”. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
It's another concert report, as we leave the house and creep down to Rhode Island to see Flopcast favorite Joan Osborne! And since Joan's big hit album (and that song - you know the one) came out way back in 1995, we're looking at the other albums we bought that year. There were lots of 1995 records from the women of the Boston rock scene (Juliana Hatfield, Mary Lou Lord, Belly, Letters to Cleo), as well as plenty more Lilith-friendly artists (Jewel, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann). We also recall the debut of Ben Folds Five, a weird covers album from Elvis Costello, and a band only Kornflake remembers. Plus: The Top Ten movies of 1995, a 90s edition of The Pudding Pages, and Happy Birthday to the guy who co-wrote all those Alanis songs. (Isn't this podcast ironic? No, it is not.) Every fan gather round now, while the So So / Cool Five sings you a song. Well… actually we're not singing, so much as bringing you another episode of selfless, cold, and composed musical analysis. And this week we're talking about Ben Folds Five's sophomore 1997 album “Whatever and Ever Amen.” This record was in heavy rotation for all of us in our happy high school days, so join us to see which parts of the album still hold up and which parts fall a bit flat. We talk at length about the band's virtuosic musicianship, lush arrangements, and iconic commitment to fuzz bass. We also break down how the band's songwriting talents led to some great tunes, but left much to be desired on the lyrics front. Plus, you can hear us try to figure out if any of these songs include piano, and Joe makes a startling admission about Girl Scout cookies.Be sure to support the artists by purchasing "Whatever and Ever Amen" on iTunes or wherever you get your music.
