Heavy duty AI processing requires specialized hardware that more resembles High-Performance Computing (HPC) than conventional enterprise IT architecture. But as more enterprise applications leverage accelerators like GPUs and DPUs, and become more disaggregated, AI starts to make more sense. Power is one key consideration, since companies are more aware of sustainability and are impacted by limited power availability in the datacenter, and efficient external storage can be a real benefit here. This is still general-purpose infrastructure but it increasingly incorporates accelerators to improve power efficiency. One issue for general purpose infrastructure is the concern over security, and enterprise AI applications will certainly benefit from broad access to a variety of enterprise data. Dell Technologies is introducing new infrastructure solutions, co-engineered with VMware, that deliver greater automation and performance for organizations embracing multicloud and edge strategies. “Customers tell us they want help simplifying their multicloud and edge strategies as they look to drive more efficiency and performance from their IT,” said Jeff Boudreau, president, of Dell Technologies Infrastructure Solutions Group. “Dell Technologies and VMware have numerous joint engineering initiatives spanning core IT areas such as multicloud, edge and security to help our customers more easily manage and gain value from their data.” Business data and applications continue to grow in multicloud environments comprised of edge locations, public clouds and on-premises IT. Many organizations have already adopted a multicloud approach, and the number of applications running at the edge will grow 800% by 2024. “IDC's global research shows many organizations are struggling to balance the rapidly rising complexity and cost of data centre, edge and cloud operations with relentless business demand for better data integration, security and application performance,” notes Mary Johnston Turner, IDC research vice president, future of digital infrastructure agenda. “These organizations recognize the need for a consistent operating model tightly integrated with infrastructure platforms that support sophisticated, large scale data-driven workloads.” Dell VxRail delivers greater performance and smallest-ever systems at the edge Dell is introducing several new VxRail systems and software advancements that improve performance on-premises and at the edge including the industry's only jointly engineered HCI-based DPU solution with VMware. Improved system performance: A result of co-engineering with VMware and its Project Monterey initiative, VxRail systems support new VMware vSphere 8 software that has been rearchitected to run on DPUs. Customers can improve application and networking infrastructure performance and improve TCO by moving these services from a system's CPU to its new onboard DPU. Support demanding workloads: Select VxRail systems now support VMware's new vSAN Enterprise Storage Architecture (ESA). With up to 4x vSAN performance improvement, customers can better support demanding mission-critical applications. Smallest edge systems: VxRail rugged modular nodes deliver high performance and scalability in the system's smallest form factor to date. Modular nodes are ideal for edge use cases including healthcare, energy and utilities and digital cities because of VxRail's industry-first, on-board hardware witness, which allows for deployment in high latency, low bandwidth locations. “The increasing demand for software-defined infrastructure services for networking, storage and security places more demands on already-strained CPUs. As more distributed, resource-intensive applications are onboarded, there is a need to reimagine data centre architecture to fully support the requirements of these applications,” said Krish Prasad, senior vice president & general manager, Cloud Infrastructure Business Group, VMware. “Dell VxRail with VMware vSphere 8 will deliver a foundation for next-generation data centre architecture by running infrastructure services on the DPU. This will enable greater network and application performance and a new level of sophistication in adopting Zero Trust security strategies to protect modern enterprise workloads.” Dell APEX expands multicloud and edge support for VMware environments Dell is adding several offers to its APEX portfolio for VMware workloads that speed development of cloud-native apps and better allocate compute and storage resources for applications at the edge. APEX Cloud Services with VMware Cloud adds managed VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid services, which allows IT teams to help developers move faster by using a container-based approach to application development. Contributions from investments in Eindhoven DC, Guangdong DC, London DC and NetCo bonds totalling c.S$386mn, and completion of AEI at DC1 and Intellicentre3 development were wiped out by higher electricity costs, provision for litigation and absence of rental support for KDC4. 3. Portfolio occupancy up 0.4ppts YoY, from 98.3% to 98.7%. This was due to higher occupancy at DUB1, which improved from 82.3% to 95.9%. 4. KDC initiated litigation against tenant DXC over revenue for provision of colocation services totaling S$14.8m for the 4-year period between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2025. The affected occupancy is c.0.4% of KDC's NLA as at 31 December 2021, and the impact arising from the disputed sum per annum is approximately 2.0% of FY21's distributable income. Maintain BUY on earnings stability and attractive entry price for future-ready DC assets. FY22-26e DPUs lowered by 3.7-6.1% due to provision for litigation and higher electricity costs, resulting in 8.2% reduction in our DDM-TP (COE 5.88%) from S$2.81 to S$2.58. We reiterate our BUY recommendation, lowering our DDM-TP slightly from $3.65 to S$3.52. FY22-25e DPUs have dipped 2.1-4.9% after factoring in higher OPEX. Our DDM-based TP is lowered by 3.6% to S$3.52 due to lower DPUs and higher COE, which was raised from 6% to 6.12% after factoring in a higher risk-free rate. The Creativity of Designing Edge Solutions for the Enterprise with Nick Barcet, Sr. Director of Technology Strategy at Red Hat

Over The Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2021 47:41

Today’s episode features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Nick Barcet, Senior Director of Technology Strategy at Red Hat. Nick joined Red Hat in June 2014 and now leads the team that helps decide the future of technologies, currently focusing on Telco, Edge, and AI/ML. In this interview, Nick discusses what it means to set edge strategy for Red Hat, where he’s seeing the most edge-related demand right now, why the future of edge must be open, and the floating IP solution he’s constructed in order to get reliable internet while he sails around the world on his boat.Key Quotes: “When we’re talking about a new field of interest, what people are saying is still not yet normalized. We still have problems with definitions and there is a lot of confusion. If I take the average person in the IT field and ask them, ‘What is the edge?’ The answer is generally linked to mobile phones and 5G. And while these are important components, they are not the beginning nor the end of it. So I think it's super interesting to be in this early phase and trying to bring more clarity to the fog in which we are moving.”“[Three areas] where we see a lot of edge-related demand right now are: In telco–they are busy deploying 5G, which requires an edge infrastructure for it to be performant. Then automotive–lots of evolution is happening in the auto industry…And then the general industrial environment–whether it's oil and gas or standard factories–is really, really keen on improving their processes by deploying edge infrastructure. But it doesn't stop there. We see opportunities happening in retail, in healthcare, in the public sector, it’s really, really varied.”“When you're dealing with open-source software, there is never a case where a single company offers that piece of software, there are generally multiple options, and that's another way of protecting you from having to redo everything from scratch. So that's why I think that the edge cannot be fruitful--cannot bring maximum benefit--without being open, because if you are not protected against those risks, you're going to have a very, very costly edge.”“The evolution of networking…is going to change a lot of things on how we approach the networking problem…The availability of network is going to become a problem of the past. If we look at 20 years from now, we have hope to have instantaneous communication--as in quantum--we could have instantaneous communication from any point to any point.”“The other evolution that is really interesting is how we are using processing power in more specialized units. The fact that you have DPUs available in SmartNICs and we can use those to do things in parallel to what the main CPU is doing. I believe that this specialization of resources is going to enable a new generation of software that provides for problem-solving quicker and much cheaper than ever before. We've seen that revolution happen through GPU's, but we are only at the beginning of this revolution, and it's going to go through all kinds of discoveries.”SponsorsOver the Edge is brought to you by the generous sponsorship of Catchpoint, NetFoundry, Ori Industries, Packet, Seagate, Vapor IO, and Zenlayer. The featured sponsor of this episode of Over the Edge is Vapor IO, the leader in edge computing. We discuss the announcements from last week's GPU Technology Conference, along with AI hardware news from elsewhere, and look at Microsoft's proposed acquisition of language AI specialist Nuance for $16 billion – actually closer to $20bn once you account for debt. We start with our regular segment chronicling the revolution in hardware for AI – it's Chip Wars! When Joe Biden is waving around silicon wafers, you know interesting things are going to happen. Nvidia is busy building its first ever CPU to support machine learning workloads, codenamed Grace – after the absolute legend that was rear admiral Grace Hopper. Plus, Nvidia's DGX family of ‘building blocks' for supercomputers will now feature Data Processing Units (DPUs) by default, running a wide variety of networking tasks. DPUs weren't originally developed at Nvidia – these came out of the Mellanox acquisition, which equipped the company with clever networking silicon. Intel's Habana – which has designed its own family of chips for AI – has landed a contract with the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and will build a supercomputer called Voyage. But is it the kind of customer that Intel needs at this point? Meanwhile, SambaNova – which has designed its own family of chips for AI – has announced a massive $676 million funding round, just a few mounts after emerging from stealth. Its CEO Rodrigo Liang appeared on this podcast just a few short weeks ago – making participation a sure indicator of future success. Next, we talk about Nuance, the AI company built from countless acquisitions, now being acquired by Microsoft. The speech recognition and language specialist has helped shape the emerging virtual assistant market – can it give Cortana a shot in the arm? We also cover: Shopping for prying mantises! Fredrik chats with Wilson Snyder about Verilator, chip design, performance, and open hardware. This episode is a bit of a follow-up to episode 389 where Robert Wikander talked - in Swedish - about verification of circuit designs. Afterward, Robert mentioned that we should really ask Wilson Snyder to talk about Verilator, and here we are! Wilson works with CPU and other hardware design, and is one of the lead developers of Verilator. When you design hardware, hardware description languages come in handy - you use them to describe hardware precisely. Then you can generate runnable code simulating the hardware, and run batteries of tests against it without needing to manufacture physical hardware. Verilator is one tool for turning code in the Verilog hardware description language into C++ or Systemc. The major competing tools are more on the interpreter side - which means that Verilator usually has a performance advantage. Oh, and it’s GPL licensed as well. As we discuss, Verilator doesn’t actually support all of Verilog, but that’s being worked on. And increased performance in itself is a clear goal of both research and concrete improvements. We also discuss a bit what might come out hardware-wise in the future. Wilson predicts DPUs - data-offload units, basically - will become even more of a thing than today. The second part of the discussion is focused on Verilator itself - how it’s built, designed, and developed. People with knowledge of compilers will feel right at home inside the Verilator source code. Thank you Cloudnet for sponsoring our VPS! Comments, questions or tips?
