One thing that is remarkable about finding ones passion is it can happen anytime in life, passions change as we age. So it's never to late to find that one thing you are absolute obsessed with. My guest today found her passion for Archery and hunting after retirement and has really taken to it. Karen is an advocate for women in the outdoors and helps with different women based events and courses teaching other women about the wonderful sport of Archery and hunting. Let me tell you...she is one hell of a shot!! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube for more content. Cheers!

The Outdoors Fix is a podcast to inspire you to make the outdoors a bigger part of your life. It's hosted by Liv Bolton. Are you looking to join an adventure community or thinking about setting one up? For this episode, I went for a walk with Kate Capelli, the founder of Adventuress in the Wild. It's an adventure community for women based in London and the South East that's massively grown since Kate set it up a couple of years ago. The group offers everything from weekly walks around London and bouldering through to hikes in Surrey and the Chilterns, and wild weekends in Snowdonia, the Peak District and South Downs. There are trips abroad in the works too. With so many events on offer, Kate, who is now a qualified lowland walk leader and hiking guide, has created a big buzz around the community and she's opening up adventure to hundreds of women. As someone who defines herself as queer, she emphasises that the group is open to all women, particularly those in the LGBTQIA+ community & women of colour. Kate and I met back in the summer and chatted in Ashridge Estate in the Chilterns, only about 10 minutes from where I grew up! I wanted to find out what sparked the idea to set up her adventure community, how Kate runs it and how it's profoundly changing her life. Kate shares her tips for getting outdoors more and great places to explore in London at the end of the episode, so make sure you don't miss her advice. There's also a minute of the sounds of nature at the end for a little bit of escapism in your busy day. Kate's episode of The Outdoors Fix is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you get your podcasts. I hope you enjoy it! On this episode I go for a walk in Pine Hill with Alex McClain, a Catskills 3500 peak completionist, Long Path End-to-Ender and outdoor apparel designer. Alex's outdoor adventures began as a child, hiking and camping with family in her home state of Indiana, but it wasn't until she moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion design, that she began to notice how spending time in the outdoors became essential for both her mental health, and her creativity. Like many carless New Yorkers, Alex utilized regional public transit to get her out of the city and into the woods and soon found herself hiking even further upstate, summiting all the Catskill 3500 peaks and section hiking all 357-miles of New York State's Long Path. Throughout our conversation, you'll hear how Alex managed to fit all of this adventuring into some very short weekends, how spending so much time on trail inspired her to become a trail maintainer, and how getting furloughed during the pandemic, actually allowed for her to land a dream job as a sock-designer for Darn Tough! We also go deep on what it takes to make a good sock and how wearing what you love can play a key role in your enjoyment of the outdoors. Becky Marcelliano understands very well what it means to embrace the outdoors in work and play, challenges and triumphs. About ten years ago, she began her health journey with chronic autoimmune disease, and she has since decided to open up about her own story after hearing other people share theirs. Becky is all about welcoming women of many different backgrounds and abilities to play outside, and she is redefining—or undefining—what it means to be a woman in the outdoors. In this episode, I chat with Becky about her deep-rooted love for the outdoors, what it is like to navigate an autoimmune diagnosis while dwelling on the positive things, the benefits of building each other up, and how women can take their first steps toward experiencing the outdoors for themselves. On this episode, Melissa talks with Jenny Siegfried, a mixed-media artist, illustrator, Public School Art Teacher in New York City and quite possibly one of the nation’s most enthusiastic outdoor fans. When she’s not in the classroom, Jenny is often exploring the trails of the greater New York Metropolitan region, running, hiking and creating beautiful drawings and paintings right out in the elements. She talks with Melissa about art education, how she has learned to adapt her art making process for the outdoors and both the fortuitious and sometimes accidental path she took to get there. Jenny is super passionate about spending time in nature and about giving back to our lands. She talks with Melissa about volunteering for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy on trail maintenance projects way out in the back country and about her time as Artist in Residence in The Great Smokies National. Her passion for the Smokies is likely unrivaled.Melissa first met Jenny on a hike in early 2019. As one of the regular participants of the Gotta Hike Public Transit Series Hikes, Jenny’s enthusiasm for spending time outdoors and her appreciation for the beauty of nature is infectious. Her participation always seems to bring smiles to the other hikers as well. Their conversation occurred in early January of 2020. The plan was to air it just ahead of the April Public Transit Series Hike, as Jenny was going to be leading a small art-making workshop during that hike. Of course, as of the publication date of this podcast, all Girl Gotta Hike in person events are on hold as a result of the social distancing recommendations for Covid-19. When gatherings are safe again, Melissa can’t wait to have Jenny host an art-making workshop on trail!Show Notes / Useful links:Jenny Siefried website Jenny’s Instagram Great Smoky Mountains National ParkAppalachian Trail Conservancy Volunteer Opportunities REI Speaker Series Dolly, Dolly, Dolly!

We'll show you the exact setups we were going to be using throughout the weekend, talk about the different species of fish we could potentially be catching in that area and more! Then you'll come along with us for our official day one- and it was a fun one! Be sure and check out the video version of this episode on YouTube too! Picture this. It's a sweltering hot, windy day in the Everglades. You're covered head to toe in UV protective clothing to avoid getting sunburned on top of the sunburn you already have from the fishing outing a couple of days earlier (lesson learned the hard way!). You're fishing the flats with a super experienced captain and guide and you're paired up with an airforce vet who traveled all the way down from Alaska to be a part of this amazing adventure. The fishing's been hard due to the windy conditions and the partly cloudy skies. It's finally time to break for lunch. Then...the unthinkable happens...
Bonus episode time! We got so much great stuff from the Redfish Roadie Roadtrip with Rip and Hopper's Aventure, we wanted to share two with you today! We're still rollin' in the minivan (#minivanlife). This time we've got some special guests in the van. They joined us for the Stuart, FL leg of the trip and we're so glad they did! We had Jackie Kutzer from Orvis on the show back on Episode 27 of the show (if you missed it check it out here) and Angie Scott was so happy to meet her in person. Not only that but we had Linda Leary from FisheWear all the way from Alaska (we'll definitely be chatting more in-depth with her on a future episode) AND Jessica Haydahl. Jessica is one of two full-time female photographer/videographers in the fishing industry and what a talent. In fact, our cover photo for this episode is from Jess' drone. By-the-way, if you're interested in content creation and want to hone your skills specifically for fishing and the outdoors, check out the workshops Jessica is hosting this summer. There just may be a spot still open so click here to find out more and then book your spot! What's a road trip without a little adventure? This trip didn't disappoint, at least not for Angie. Not only did she get stranded on an island in the Everglades (stay tuned for a future episode for more on that!) but she also witnessed a harrowing water rescue complete with a runaway boat...and she caught it all on Facebook live. Lessons learned here are always wear your kill switch AND your PFD. Now come be a fly-on-the-wall once again as we continue on the adventure! (And if you're feeling a little FOMO after listening to these episodes, be sure and mark your calendars for next year's trip! Dates are already set...9/16-23 2020! You heard it here 1st! But what will the theme be???) "19 Days, 3,796 Miles, 5 States, starting in Nashville and heading to Homosassa, FL then all along the coast to New Orleans, LA with the goal to fish and meet up with as many women as we can along the way." That was the premise of the 2019 edition of Rip and Hopper's Adventure, the Redfish Roadie Road Trip- Pretty. Darn. Epic. As you may recall waaaay back on Episode 16 of The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast Angie Scott interviewed Jen Ripple from DUN Magazine and Heather Hodson from United Women on the Fly at Fly South in Nashville as they were about to embark on their first Rip and Hopper's Adventure. (By-the-way, that episode won 1st place at the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association 2019 Excellence in Craft Awards in the Radio/Podcast category!) Well, fast forward a year later, Angie Scott had the honor of tagging along on the 2nd incarnation of the trip! Now you're invited to come along too, as we travel in the minivan on our way to New Orleans, LA looking back over the Florida portion of the adventure. Lots of fun was had, many memories were made and loads of fish were caught! We discuss the Community Casting Events that were held along the way and tying in well with our "Mansplaining" episode last week, the importance of being self-aware when instructing and introducing new people to the sport. Join us for this episode as well as Episode 86, the bonus episode where we get to chat with a few of the amazing ladies who joined up with is from the Stuart, FL leg of the journey. I have been working in the fishing industry for many years and about once a month I get a message or an email asking my opinion on the wording of something, a photograph or if I think a post could post be offensive. Most time's it is well-meaning guys who want to be doing the right thing and occasionally is a Women who is upset about something. Well, I recently received a call from a long-time acquaintance, Lyubaka, who is an avid angler and a You Tuber (lyubakavideo). He preceded to tell me that he recently was invited to go fishing by a woman from Kanas. His truck driving job allows him to travel and he always packs a fishing rod and hopes to wet a line. His paths crossed with a gal, and he joined her to fish her spot for catfish. He filmed the fishing and later watched the video. Lyubaka stated " I wanted to punch myself in the face" after seeing how condescending he was to the lady. At one point he even reached over to further adjust the drag while she was fighting a fish. ( see picture ) His behavior on the video shocked him, and he did not realize how he was acting. We decided to do the podcast and have a discussion about it. Many times those mansplainers have good intentions, and seeing it from the outside looking in, gives it a whole new perspective. As an angling educator, this caused me to look in the mirror and see if I could have been a "womansplainer". It got me thinking......have I???? all in all a good lesson and a good reminder to not make assumptions about what you think other people may or may not know. They might just surprise you. - Barb Carey Additional Resources: Subscribe to Lyubaka's YouTube Channel Highway Bassin' with a Wild Woman Video Barb and Lyubaka's YouTube Livestream Watch this episode on YouTube Pre-order your "Get Out of Mansplaining Free" cards! Three years ago, Amanda Wilson won a big musky tournament, and her phone started to ring off the hook. Fishing Companies were calling her as asking if she needed sponsors, offers to fish other tournaments were suggested, and she felt a bit overwhelmed. After the dust settled, she decided that working full time as the owner of Deerfoot Resort, she may as well host a Musky School for Women. Fast forward, and we join Amanda on year three of the Women's Musky School.
We got you all fired up for striper fishing in Episode 77 featuring "The Fish Wrap Writer" Todd Corayer. We were talking about our upcoming surfcasting clinic in Cape Cod with Wisconsin Women Fish and Al's Goldfish Lure Company. Now that the event is in the books, we've got a great event recap in store for you! Not even a Nor'ester could stop this group of passionate anglers! We had ladies from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maine, Tennessee and even a couple of locals from the Boston area. I'm happy to report that our guides Eddy and Todd did their job and put us on some exciting striper action. It was a great time and we all learned a lot about surfcasting techniques, how to rig different setups and much more. This episode features the 1st part of our trip, which was technically before the event officially started. We were on our own fishing the Cape Cod Canal, but first, we stopped in at Red Top Sporting Goods for a little inside intel... We hope you take away something from our experience and hopefully you can join us for the next one! Special thanks to Toyota for providing us with an amazing 2019 Tundra TRD Pro for our event! It came in really handy to have a secure place to lock up our gear as we traveled about from spot to spot in search of striper action! Additional Resources: Al's Goldfish Lure Co. Welcome to Fish Camp Radio Live 2.0! We're so happy to say that last year's Fish Camp Radio Live won TWO awards! First place at this year's Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) Awards in Craft and also at the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association Excellence in Craft awards. That being said we've set the bar high for this year's episode and you won't be disappointed! It's been said there's a "secret sauce" involved in the group Wisconsin Women Fish and the main ingredient of that sauce seems to be The Woman Angler and Adventurer's own Barb Carey. This year, Angie Scott had the opportunity to attend the annual Fish Camp to experience this dynamic first hand... "It was hard sitting at home last year editing the Fish Camp episode because listening to it gave me major FOMO!" said Scott. (For those of you who don't know the acronym, FOMO stands for "Fear of missing out.") Scott was happy to have the opportunity to attend this year and even made a video episode of this year's Fish Camp Radio Live 2.0 which you can view on Waypoint TV or on YouTube! We're definitely taking it to the next level this year because it's worth taking there. Between women learning about different types of line, how to launch a boat, bass fishing techniques, landing their first Master Angler Fish to surviving frigid waters after tipping over in a kayak, the inspiration and lessons learned from each other are endless. Experience the magic for yourself by watching or listening to this episode. Then go get YOUR fish on with a local club, if not, join Wisconsin Women Fish! They welcome women from all over the country to become a part of the "secret sauce!" Meet Chanda Gelbhart! Chanda is an active member of Women Anglers of Minnesota, is an avid gardener, cook, entrepreneur AND is one of the most inspiring women we've come across when it comes to making outdoor adventures like fishing and hunting a family affair. We were so thankful to get introduced to a young angler by the name of Chasten Whitfield while we were at iCast. Chasten was among the multitude of women in the industry who came out for RBFF's Wave Makers event. We did a short interview with her there and it didn't take long to realize we would need to have her back on the show for a full interview because the things she's doing at such a young age is nothing short of awe-inspiring! As soon as she turned 18, she got her USCG Captain's License and started her 501C3...both endeavors are a tall order, even for the most gifted individuals. Through fishing and sharing her passion with kids with disabilities, she had an experience that set the course she wants to follow for the rest of her life. You'll hear about it on today's episode. She has even bigger dreams for the future and we have no doubt she's going to knock it out of the park, Chasten can! Be inspired by her story...and remember, if she can do it YOU can do it! The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast hosts Angie Scott and Barb Carey recently had the pleasure of meeting up with author and hunter K.J. Houtman. They were all attendees of the 2019 Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) conference in beautiful LaCrosse, WI. Houtman recently released a book entitled, "Why Women Hunt," so it was only fitting that the three women spend some time in a ground blind together on this trip. K.J. was outfitted with her bow, Barb with a crossbow and Angie was more than happy to be armed with only a GoPro to capture the scene. Unfortunately, no deer graced the women with their presence during the short amount of time at their disposal in between conference events. However, nothing beats spending quality time surrounded by nature with your sisters. That's just one of the many reasons why women hunt. In her intimate examination of 18 different women hunters from all over the United States, Houtman reveals the diverse and deep motivations for hunting these women have. Hunters and non-hunters alike will be inspired by their stories which are accompanied by some beautiful photography. Be sure and listen in to today's episode to find out more about this rapidly growing segment of the outdoor industry and gain some insight into the why behind it all. Then pick up a copy of K.J. Houtman's "Why Women Hunt." While you're at it, pick up an extra to gift to a family member or friend as (Christmas is just around the corner)! Additional Resources: Buy Why Women Hunt! Al Lindner joined up with The Woman Angler & Adventurer podcast and spoke with us. Al's years of experience gives him a unique perspective on the fishing industry both past and future. Social media has helped fuel the change and the working in the fishing industry has significantly more options than it ever has before. One of Al's recent brainstorms was the Fishing Careers Workshop. Now in its third year, Al's talks about this year's guests, the many options available to those looking to work in the industry and how people can sign up for the workshop. Al Linder is well aware of how women have helped the fishing movement grow and talks about some of the early pioneers to leave their mark in the industry. It was a pleasure running into our friend Dena Vick recently at iCast. Barb has known Dena for some time and Angie had the pleasure meeting her this past fall at the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Conference in Bismark, ND. They were happy to finally have her on the show, together and in-person, as Dena is a major player in the fishing industry. She was recently promoted to Director of Fishing and Marine Marketing Strategy and Communications at Traditions Media which is one of the top fishing media companies in the US. A wealth of great information about the fishing industry and all the latest products, Dena had a promising young angler alongside her who wants to one day do what she does. Lee Rose Koza had the unique opportunity to shadow her mentor at the largest fishing conference in the country. It was great speaking with her as well and getting her perspective on the conference, high school fishing and fishing scholarships of which Lee Rose is no stranger. She is a proud recipient of a fishing scholarship to Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN! Be on the lookout for this rising star! Give it a listen and get inspired! What a time to be a woman in the outdoors right now! It’s a norm in society that women are viewed as less powerful in some areas, most especially in hunting. However, the tables have turned because women have proven their prowess in hunting. Heather Shaw, the Regional Biologist for the Ruffed Grouse Society, and her best friend and co-host, Meadow Kouffeld, are models of tough women outdoors. The ladies go from one story and adventure to another to demonstrate that there are no limits for women outdoors. Both passionate women hunters, they take on the importance of doing DIY hunts and mentorship, inspiring and introducing other women to hunting, and the fulfillment of hunting with a bird dog.

Hilary Oliver is a writer, editor and filmmaker. She makes outdoor films for brands such as REI, Outdoor Research and Yeti Cycles. Her mission is to give voice to women in the outdoors - to showcase a perspective deeper than physical achievement alone. Her work includes Above the Fray with Beth Rodden and How to Run 100 miles with Brandon Leonard for REI. She loves filmmaking and is driven to do it but the thing is, it doesn’t pay the bills. Don’t get me wrong, she makes money but it’s not her bread and butter. What is? Her work as a freelance writer and editor of the Outdoor Research blog. Today, we’re going to talk about doing your craft because you love it, not because it pays the bills. How fulfilling it is to be involved in something you love and removing the pressure of making money doing it - how that impacts the experience of making it and the outcome. Hilary will share how she broke into freelance writing and then parlayed that into film making. But we’ll also talk about finding stories and giving voice to women in the outdoors. I hope today’s episode will inspire you if you to pursue things because you want to, not because you want to get rich doing it. With that, let’s listen in and gear up for what’s next: Where to find Hilary: www.hilarymoliver.com Instagram Resources Mentioned: Where to link to videos: https://hilarymoliver.com/films/ Learn more at The Gear Show
