Today we revisit another one of my favorite episodes, the sinking of the Eastland. On July 15th, 1915, a steamship with a checkered past called the SS Eastland docked at a wharf on the Chicago River in downtown Chicago, ready to transport 2500 Western Electric employees and their families across Lake Michigan to a company picnic. Once boarding completed, however, terrible tragedy struck when the ship tilted over and into the river, killing over 800 people -mostly women and children- in a horrific, chaotic scene. My guest is Michael McCarthy, author of the New York Times Bestseller "Ashes Under Water: The SS Eastland and the Shipwreck That Shook America". He offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the ill-fated SS Eastland and recounts the story of the tragic sinking and its aftermath, including famed attorney Clarence Darrow's involvement in the trial that followed. Ted and Barb Wachholz are co-founders of the Eastland Disaster Historical Society in Chicago. QUOTES TED:  “...That was one of the things that we decided early on when we organized, was that if we were gonna be successful, we had to tell the history through the eyes and voices of those that actually experienced it." BARB: “...we've also talked about how the times have changed so much where if that tragedy happened today... There are support groups, there are psychologists to talk to. They didn't have that back then. People would either talk amongst themselves within their family... or friends, but again, for those who were told, we're not gonna talk about this. That had to be absolutely horrible. I can only imagine that ripple effect of that trauma.” TED: “Their voices were taken away from them.  Their stories were taken away from them. But, you know... it's important to have a legacy. And if we can help preserve and share that legacy of those thousands of people, then there's value there. On the morning of July 24, 1915, employees of the Western Electric Company and their families excitedly boarded the SS Eastland near the Clark Street Bridge in Chicago, eager to set off for a day of fun in Michigan City, Indiana, during their annual company picnic. Tragically, the ship capsized just 19 feet from the wharf in the Chicago River, killing 844 people in one of the worst maritime disasters in United States history. Joining me on this episode to help us understand more about the tragic Eastland disaster are Ted and Barb Wachholz, who co-founded the Eastland Disaster Historical Society with Barb's sister, Susan Decker, and their mom, Jean Decker. Barb and Susan's grandmother, Borghild Amelia Aanstad, who went by Bobbie, was 13 years old, when she, along with her sister Solveig, Mother Mariane, and Uncle Olaf, survived the capsizing of the Eastland. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode audio is “Somewhere a Voice is Calling,” written by Arthur Tate in 1911. This recording is by the Revillon Trio in 1915 and is in the Public Domain. It is available via the Internet Archive. The image is a photograph taken on July 24, 1915 during the rescue operations; it is freely available via the Eastland Disaster Historical Society. The Eastland Disaster was the most deadly shipwreck in Great Lakes history. More passengers would die in this disaster than in the sinking of the Titanic. This was supposed to be a fun excursion to the grounds of a company picnic. The annual employee appreciation event had become a much anticipated break from the six-day work weeks that the lower middle class employees endured. On this fateful day in 1915, hundreds would die including whole families and leave a mark forever on Chicago. Locations that housed the dead until they could be identified are still haunted by the tragic event, both figuratively and literally. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Eastland Disaster! Learn more about your ad choices. It was 105 years ago this week. The S.S. Eastland was packed with passengers, and tied to a dock along the Chicago River, when things went horribly wrong. The steamship tipped over on its side. Hundreds died just feet from shore. It happened only three years after the Titanic, but even here in Illinois, many have never heard about the tragedy. We talk with an author who has investigated what happened and why. That and more on this episode of Statewide.
