Joining us for this episode of Feedstuffs in Focus is Dr. David Baumert, Senior Technical Services Veterinarian at Zoetis Pork, to discuss the reasons why producers sometimes choose not to treat pigs — usually heavier weight finishers — in need of swine respiratory disease (SRD) therapy and the implications of non-use from a performance, labor and economic standpoint. This episode of Feedstuffs in Focus has been brought to you by Zoetis Pork.IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: People with known hypersensitivity to penicillin or cephalosporins should avoid exposure to EXCENEL RTU EZ. Do not use in swine found to be hypersensitive. Withdraw 6 days prior to slaughter when injection site volumes are greater than 5 mL up to 15 mL per injection site and 4 days prior to slaughter when injection site volumes are less than or equal to 5 mL per injection site. It's Pride Month, and I thought what a great time to talk about the other half of one of the most infamous pirate duos in history: pirate queen Mary Read. We don't know a ton for sure about Mary's life before she became a pirate. However, we do know that Mary had wild adventures disguised as a boy in the military before she ever took up a life of privacy with her girlfriend, Anne Bonney and Anne Bonney's boyfriend, Jack Rackham. Join me on this episode to learn the wild tale of how a less than half-a-year private career made Mary the most famous female pirate in history. In honor of Flag Day this week, I decided to make an episode about something written in honor of the flag of the United States of America--The Star Spangled Banner. Why was it written and when was it officially adopted as out national anthem? And, as always, I have three great additional history stories that go along with the famous date. Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour...Key Insights:* Someone is wrong on the internet! Specifically Brad… He needs to shape up and scrub his brain… * Back in the 2000s, Brad argued that the U.S. should over the next few generations try to pass the baton of world leadership to a prosperous, democratic, liberal China…* Back in the 2000s, Noah thought that Brad was wrong—he looked at the Chinese Communist Party, and he thought: communist parties do not do “coëxistence”…* Noah understands people with a limitless authoritarian desire for power—people like Trump, Xi, Putin, and in the reverse Abe—and the systems that nurture and promote them…* Why did Brad go wrong? Excessive reliance in the deep structures of his brain on the now 60-year-old Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy: Lord and Peasant in the Making of the Modern World.* Why did Brad go wrong? A failure to understand Lenin's party of a new type as a bureaucratic-cultural organization…* Suggestions for what Brad DeLong should earn during his forthcoming stint in the reëducation camp are welcome…* &, as always, Hexapodia…References:* Bear, Greg. 1985. Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour... Key Insights:* Vernor Vinge was one of the GOAT scifi authors—and he is also one of the most underrated…* That a squishy social-democratic leftie like Brad DeLong can derive so much insight and pleasure from the work of a hard-right libertarian like Vernor Vinge—for whom the New Deal Order is very close to being the Big Bad, and who sees FDR as a cousin of Sauron—creates great hope that there is a deeper layer of thought to which we all can contribute. The fact that Brad DeLong and Vernor Vinge get excited in similar ways is a universal force around which we can unite, and add to them H.G. Wells and Jules Verne…* The five things written by Vernor Vinge that Brad and Noah find most interesting are: * “The Coming Technological Singularity: How to Survive in the Post-Human Era”,* A Fire Upon the Deep,* A Deepness in the Sky, * “True Names”, & * Rainbows End…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: The world is not a game of chess in which the entity that can think 40 moves ahead will always easily trounce the entity that can only think 10 moves ahead, for time and chance happeneth to us all…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: Almost all human intelligence is not in individual brains, but is in the network. We are very smart as an anthology intelligence. Whatever true A.I.s we create will be much smarter when they are tied into the network as useful and cooperative parts of it—rather than sinister gods out on their own plotting plots…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: mind and technology amplification is as likely to be logistic as exponential or super-exponential…* The ultimate innovation in a society of abundance is the ability to control human personality and desire—and now we are back to the Buddha, and to Zeno, Kleanthes, Khrisippus, and Marcus Aurelius…* With the unfortunate asterisk that mind-hacking via messages and chemicals mean that such an ultimate innovation can be used for evil as well as good…* Addiction effects from gambling are not, in fact, a good analogy for destructive effects of social media as a malevolent attention-hacker…* Cyberspace is not what William Gibson and Neil Stephenson predicted. But it rhymed. And mechanized warfare was not what H.G. Wells predicted. But it rhymed. A lot of the stuff about AI that we see in science fiction will rhyme with whatever things are going to happen…* The Blight of A Fire Upon the Deep is a not-unreasonable metaphor for social media as propaganda intensifier…* We want the future of the Whole Earth Catalog and the early Wired, not of crypto grifts and ad-supported social media platforms…* Vernor Vinge's ideas will be remembered—if only as important pieces of a historical discussion about why the Superintelligence Singularity road was not (or was) taken—as long as the Thrones of the Valar endure…* Noah Smith continues to spend too much time picking fights on Twitter…* &, as always, Hexapodia…References:* DeLong, J. In the 1960s, one hopeful British psychiatrist hoped he could prevent disaster—not with science, but with the supernatural. For a number of years. Approximately 9.5% (16,595,00) of American adults aged 18 and over will experience a depressive illness (major depression, bipolar disorder, or dysthymia) each year. Women have nearly twice the likelihood of experiencing major depression compared to men. On the other hand, both men and women have an equal chance of developing bipolar disorder. However, most studies indicate that when Black individuals do experience depression, the condition tends to persist for a longer duration. Additionally, they may have a higher likelihood of co-occurring diagnoses such as addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.Racism and stigma within the mental health profession can exacerbate the impact of depression. Healthcare professionals and other providers tend to offer lower treatment rates for Black individuals with depression compared to their white counterparts.Sources: "Black Depression." In late November 1989, college freshman Mandy Stavik returned to her hometown of Acme, Washington to celebrate the holidays with her family. On the afternoon of November 24, the day after Thanksgiving, Mandy told her family she was going for a run. When she still hadn't returned that evening, her mother became concerned and called around to her friends, but none had heard from her. When she still hadn't returned the next morning, the panic set in, and the search began. For three days, the residents of Acme, Washington undertook an increasingly desperate search for Mandy Stavik and were heartbroken when her body was eventually located in the shallow water of the Nooksack River. Local police began an intense investigation, but after months of dead ends and dwindling leads, the case wound down and eventually went cold.Mandy Stavik's death would likely have remained unsolved, were it not for a tenacious cold case detective, who in 2009 began running old DNA samples against samples collected from suspects over the last two decades.Thank you to the fantastical David White for research assistanceReferencesAssociated Press. 1989. On December 2, 2018, the parents of twenty-one-year-old Grace Millane, a British tourist on vacation in New Zealand, became concerned when the birthday wishes they sent their daughter went unacknowledged. Having completed her degree at the University of Lincoln a few months earlier, Grace had spent several weeks traveling during her gap year but had been keeping in regular contact with her parents since leaving for her trip. When they still hadn't heard from their daughter three days later, Grace's parents called Auckland police and reported her missing. A week later, Grace Millane's body was discovered in a suitcase near an access road in the Waitakere Ranges, a dense wooded area about twelve miles outside Auckland. A day later, investigators arrested twenty-six-year-old Jesse Kempson, who was the last person seen with Grace on the night of the murder when the two were captured together by a CCTV camera going up to Kempson's room at the CityLife Hotel. Please Consider Signing this PetitionThank you to our favorite David White for research assistanceReferencesBBC News. 2018. On the evening of February 16, 1981, nineteen-year-old Arne Johnson stabbed his friend and landlord Alan Bono to death during an argument, after which Johnson fled the scene and was arrested several miles away later that night. Under normal circumstances, the murder of one man by another in a small town would hardly register on the scale of national, or even regional news, but if Arne Johnson was to be believed, these weren't ordinary circumstances. According to Arne, the devil made him do it.Thank you to Dave White for research assistance.References:Associated Press. 1986. "Man released early in 'demon murder case'." The history of the United States wasn't always pretty, and that was proven on June 25, 1876. On that infamous day, General George Armstrong Custer met on the battlefield with member of the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes in what would become known as Custer's Last Stand. A little after 10:00 pm on the evening of May 1, 1990, Pamela Smart returned home from work to find her husband, twenty-four-year-old Gregg Smart, lying dead just beyond the front door of their condominium, a single bullet hole in his head. Detectives from the small town of Derry, NH arrived to find what appeared to be the scene of a robbery; though, very little looked to have been stolen and to investigators the scene felt staged. Two days later, Derry Police Captain Loring Jackson announced that Gregg Smart's death wasn't a random attacked, he'd been murdered by someone who knew him. The murder of Gregg Smart, and the trial that followed, shocked the population of New Hampshire, where it remains perhaps the most notorious criminal trial in the state's history. As the first criminal trial to be televised from beginning to end, the case of Pamela Smart and her teenage lover captivated a national audience, leading to television and feature films, several nonfiction books, and countless television specials in the decades that followed.Special thank you to the brilliant David White for research assistanceReferencesBaker, Frank. 1990. Mention the Pamela Smart case to someone in New Hampshire, and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. The case captivated the nation in the early 90's and at the center of it all, of course, was Pamela. A New Hampshire native, she had big dreams of becoming somebody and making a name for herself. She moved away from her small town and almost did, but in the name of love she moved back home and settled into her career as a School Administrator. It was via that position that she would meet young sophomore in High School, Billy Flynn. Pam groomed the boy, and had him thinking they were fully in love before she asked him a question that would change both of their lives forever: Would he murder her husband? In part one we'll cover the early life of both Pam and her husband, Gregg Smart, we'll break down how Pam and Billy became involved with each other and just how Pam got Billy to believe that murdering her husband was what it would take for them to be together forever.Special thank you to the brilliant David White for research assistanceReferencesBaker, Frank. 1990. Bird banding, also known as bird ringing, is a scientific research method used to study various aspects of bird biology and ecology. The bands, usually made of lightweight aluminum or plastic, are placed around the bird's leg and contain a unique number and contact information. By tracking the movements and behavior of banded birds, scientists can learn about bird migration patterns, population demographics, behavior, and survival rates. The data collected through bird banding helps to inform conservation efforts and policy decisions related to bird populations and their habitats. Albanese, J. In some cases, it might be beneficial for a population of bighorn sheep to be isolated if the population is facing a disease outbreak or if the population is genetically distinct from other populations. Isolation can prevent the spread of diseases to other populations and allow the isolated population to recover. It can also help maintain the genetic diversity of a distinct population. However, if the isolated population remains small, it may still face problems related to inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity in the long run. Elk antlers are remarkable structures that can withstand large impact loads during combat. Understanding the fracture toughness of antlers can provide insight into designing impact-resistant materials. A recent study investigated the dynamic fracture toughness of elk antler and found it to be significantly tougher under dynamic loads than bone. However, measuring the fracture toughness of the antler was challenging due to its extreme fracture resilience by multiple toughening mechanisms. This research could have implications for improving the crashworthiness of structural materials. Dynamic fracture resilience of Antler: Biomimetic inspiration improved ... (no date). Adolescents represent a portion of the fastest growing demographic for development of sexually transmitted infection. Studies have found that STIs have some of the highest rates in individuals aged 15-24, and 20% of new HIV diagnoses occur in people aged 13-24. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is medicine people at risk for HIV take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use and is an effective tool to dramatically decrease the risk of HIV acquisition in at-risk youth. Dr. Cheryl Newman, a board certified infectious disease specialist joins medical students Patrice Collins and Elise Liu to discuss PrEP for HIV prevention in the adolescent population. After listening to this podcast, learners should be able to: Learn the approach to sexual health screening in adolescents. Understand the risks of HIV exposure in adolescents. Define PrEP and how it works. Understand the requirements for starting PrEP, including demographics and preliminary testing. Explain the federal and/or state laws that govern the prescription of HIV prevention medicine for adolescents. The grind of surgical training has been celebrated in the past, but to what end? With mounting evidence that supports a high prevalence of burnout in the surgical community, surgical educators and leaders are often called to develop initiatives to address the detrimental and potentially irreversible effects on trainees' wellness during surgical training. We invite Dr. David Rogers, who has personally experienced burnout, to share his insight and expertise in improving workplace wellness. Spoiler: it's not as easy as group yoga sessions and daily donuts. Hosts: Dr. David Rogers Dr. Jeremy Lipman Dr. Judith French Dr. Amy Han Learning Objectives 1. Listeners will be able to define wellness in the context of surgical training. 2. Listeners will be able to better characterize and recognize signs of burnout among surgeons and surgical trainees. 3. Listeners will be able identify strategies for overcoming burnout. 4. Listeners will be able to apply conceptual frameworks from workplace wellness outside of medicine that can guide developing effective programs that promote wellness in surgical education community. Contributor: Jared Scott, MD Educational Pearls: About 50% of those infected with SARS-CoV-2 will shed the virus in their feces Wastewater surveillance can be used to track COVID burden, which may be easier than collating test data from multiple hospitals across a region Viral shedding begins 5-7 days prior to symptom onset, so wastewater data can be used to anticipate outbreaks and inform policy and public health initiatives Some existing limitations to wastewater surveillance include: Reporting by counties were water sources may be mixed Septic tanks and other closed water systems will not be counted Not all those infected will shed the virus References Weidhaas J, Aanderud ZT, Roper DK, et al.
