For a sixteen-year-old, a summer internship working for a private investigator seems like a dream come true—particularly since the PI is investigating the most shocking crime to hit Bloomington, Indiana, in decades. A local woman has vanished, and the last time anyone saw her, she was in the backseat of a police car driven by a man impersonating an officer. Marshall Miller's internship puts him at the center of the action, a position he relishes until a terrifying moment that turns public praise for his sharp observations and uncanny memory into accusations of lying and imperiling the case. His detective mentor withdraws, friends and family worry and whisper, and Marshall alone understands that the darkness visiting his town this summer goes far beyond a single crime. Now his task is to explain it—and himself. Lost Man's Lane is a coming-of-age tale of terror that proves why its author has been hailed as “a master” by Stephen King and one who consistently offers “eerie, gripping storytelling” by Dean Koontz. Scott Carson is the pen name of Michael Koryta, a New York Times bestselling author whose work has been translated into more than twenty languages, adapted into major motion pictures, and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. A former private investigator and reporter, his writing has been praised by Stephen King, Michael Connelly, and Dean Koontz, among many others. Raised in Bloomington, Indiana, he now lives in Indiana and Maine. For more info on the book click HERE --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steve-richards/support
Easter has come and gone...so what's next? That's what I asked a Georgia pastor who's been a faith mentor for me. We also talk on this podcast (make sure to subscribe) about his path to the Lord...5 decades in ministry...a recent tag team sermon with his son on the unlikely...the utter importance of discipleship...how sports can bring people to church...and more. (5:00) Pastor Mike McBride has been in ministry for 49 years, nearly 3 decades of that as a lead pastor of Trinity Temple Assembly of God in Columbus GA, where he married my wife and I, almost 24 years ago. After having high attendance at churches on Easter, it's a great beginning, but it's then a process of spiritual growth. Those instructions can happen at/through churches. (11:20) Before he became a Pastor, Mike first accepted Christ as a young teenager, after a church invite through basketball. Not having a family support system of faith, he was lost again, but listen to his story about a radical change that happened Fathers Day 1971, and how a Bible Study called "Navigators" thrust him even further. Those steps of faith next weren't easy. (22:50) God does not want to be your co-pilot, Mike preached. he explains. How do we let go and trust God? Does it get easier? It can be tough leaving security and following the will of God. In a recent tag team sermon with his son (who's been in ministry 35 years), they told the church about God using the "unlikely" do the impossible. Pastor Mike also talked about the thief turning to the man on the middle Cross...and how we can do the same. Having his family (29:09) be involved in advancing the Kingdom of God is important. Now in his 80s, Mike still enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting (and knows all too well how athletics brings people to Christ), but came out of retirement to be Seniors Pastor at a church in town. (38:00) This pastor defines Discipleship, how Jesus really modeled it for us, being Learners! Without that foundations, emotions rule. Nowadays, churches do this through small groups, life groups(used to be called Sunday School). (46:27) Top athletes and really any of us can use our platform and gifts for God. Part of that journey for Pastor Mike and his wife was both of them surviving cancer. That included 35 straight radiation treatments in his throat. (50:45) And whatever your difficult circumstances are, ask and HE WILL HELP YOU. This week's guest describes how what's in the Bible transforms people! (54:30) He closes us out in Prayer, then one last story about witnessing to the welders. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. This will go down as another one of our favorite episodes. Singer-songwriter David Wilcox joins us and his music is one seed in the origin story of our friendship. We've both interviewed David separately over the years, but it had been a while, so we were looking forward to this one. David did not disappoint, bringing an hour's worth of insightful thoughts about, yes, songwriting, but also, life and the things we face as humans -- and how he processes all of that back into what he does.David has a wonderful new album, My Good Friends, which is available wherever you get your music on August 18. During the podcast, he performs a couple of songs from that album live, while also discussing some other tracks from his catalog. We talk about dads and so many other things. It was an absolute delight, as always, to speak with David. We also get into conversation with David regarding Jesca Hoop, one of his favorite recent discoveries musically -- and his habits as a fellow music fan. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this chat as much as we did! Please do rate and review this podcast wherever you're listening. It helps out a lot! We'll leave you with some more information about David's new album for your reading pleasure.P.S. For some bonus reading, check out Jeff's 2011 chat with David about his essential album, Home Again.--David Wilcox is a penetrating storyteller. The revered folk musician has an effortless talent for spinning lyrics that quietly cut deep, and crafting melodies that seamlessly ride the plot twists and turns. Wilcox handily exemplifies the power of lyrical and musical catharsis.Pick any song from Wilcox's new acoustic album, My Good Friends, to be released August 18 on his own Fresh Baked Records, and you will find yourself instantly immersed. Sometimes you'll see yourself in the lyrics, other times you'll marvel at the 4-minute mini-movie. My Good Friends is a stripped-down, acoustic collection of 10 songs, a fan-requested creative respite for Wilcox as he also continues to work on a full band album coming in 2024.My Good Friends features Wilcox on guitar, Bill Berg on drums, and Steve Cohen on bass. It is produced by Wilcox and almost entirely written by him except for co-writer Robert Vincent on “Just a Trace of Light.” Of special note are “Jolt,” with its jittery rhythm playing perfect backdrop to lyrics about today's obsession with online fear mongering and internet disinformation. The title track is a folk-blues number about living a life filled with close calls and surviving them all. Then there's a trio of story songs – “Dead Man's Phone,” “This Is How It Ends,” and “Lost Man” – that are as cinematic as they are charismatic. Wilcox says those last three songs “create a whole movie in my imagination.”In fact, the way Wilcox feels about every tune on My Good Friends proves this is indeed a fan-requested labor of love. “I am grateful for the community that sustains me – my good friends,” he says. “These are the kind of friends that get you through difficult times. The kind of friends that you go to for a fresh perspective when the future looks grim. These songs grew out of conversations with friends, and they hold ideas that I like to have around.”

Jane has won numerous awards for writing, including the CWA Gold Dagger Award for Best Crime Novel, the British Book Awards Crime and Thriller Book of the Year, the Australian Book Industry Awards Book of the Year and the Australian Indie Awards Book of the Year. The major motion picture adaptation of The Dry, starring Eric Bana as Aaron Falk, took more than $20.5m at the Australian box office ahead of release dates overseas. We loved chatting with Jane and hearing how she put off writing fiction for years and how winning an unpublished manuscript competition suddenly opened the doors to publishing. We also talked about Australia as a setting for crime novels, discuss whether planners and pantsers are in fact pretty much the same, and chat about why the execution of the writing is far more important than the idea for the story.Links:Buy Exiles and Jane's other books nowFollow Jane on TwitterVisit Jane's websitePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook.
