Singer/ guitarist Richard and drummer Pete were introduced to bassist Alan by some HCE fans at St Paul's Arts Centre later that year, and The Anyways' core trio was born. Their goal was to wear black and sound like The Velvet Underground, but luckily they got it slightly wrong and ended up sounding like themselves (while still wearing black). Jennie used to read the newspaper onstage and on one occasion shorted out the keyboard by pouring fizzy pop into it. Trudy, a volunteer mental health worker, brought a big following from the Mill Drop-In Centre, to liven up the usual anoraked indie audience. Sounds reviewed the band's second gig, The Television Personalities offered support slots at the 100 Club in Oxford St, and Notown Records put out the first single, Confession, in 1987. Overcome by the excitement of being played on John Peel (once), Jennie left, and Ali took her place. The Anyways became regular performers at the Camden Falcon, where Bobby Gillespie told them they needed more guitar solos. Two tracks (no solos) were featured on The Jericho Collection in 1988 alongside Notown label-mates Shake Appeal (lots of solos). A video of rousing revolutionary anthem Levitate the Pentagon was shown on satellite TV at 2.00am. The Anyways played in Oxford, London, and Bristol with Talulah Gosh, Razorcuts, The Mission and Ride... and on their own at a Hindu wedding in Hendon (kicking off the evening with that cheery toe-tapper, Love Gone Bad). Band mantra Welcome to Psychedelic Country became even more appropriate when Hamish and Karen joined in 1990. An album (Love Lies) was recorded by Rich Haines at Dungeon Studios, but sadly not released. A swirling cover of George Harrison's If I needed someone graced a charity album called Revolution No. 9. Despite their sterling work on the swirling, Hamish and Karen decided to go more Country than Psychedelic, and left to form Lucky and The Losers in 1991. The final incarnation of The Anyways was completed by guitar maestro Mark, who had previously acted as friend and multi-tasking facilitator to the band for some time - in celebration, chilled Frascati was served to the new line-up onstage at the Zodiac in front of hundreds of delighted Heavenly fans. The Sunshine Down EP came out on Marineville Records in 1993, by which time Richard had received stage-fright counselling from Jonathan Richman and the band had supported Bad Manners at a college ball. Wider (not inspired by Buster Bloodvessel) was featured on the Days Spent Dreaming compilation. By now people wanted to spread their musical wings, so The Anyways' Grand Finale gig was held in 1994 at the Jericho Tavern (the band's spiritual home for many years).

Tras discernir su vocación con los Frailes Capuchinos, fue guiado a la Diócesis de Providence por el Padre James Ruggieri. James Peak isn't an art critic, or even a journalist. He's a Banksy super-fan, and in this series he, and his soundman Duncan, get closer than close to Banksy's secret world - telling the story of the graffiti kid who made spraying walls into high art, the household name who is completely anonymous, the cultural phenomenon who bites the hand that feeds him. James persuades a member of Banksy's secret team – someone who worked closely with the artist when they were starting to cut through – to talk about the experience. The story that results is a rollercoaster ride. In this episode, a nightmare exhibition on Oxford Street sees Steph in big trouble with the big man. Hey Lifers, Britt's stuck her foot in it (unexpected) and our favourite Laura is back!! First up today, a queer bar on Oxford St has had enough of the hens and bucks parties! Our friend Xander joins us to chat about his experiences in gay bars and the reasons behind why this decision has been made! Vibes for the week: Laura - Triangle of Sadness movie on Amazon Prime Britt - Iced coffee cubes Questions for today: I met a guy on an app and he is seeking one person to have FWB. He is in a sexless marriage, and not wanting to leave his wife. Personally, I am fine with what he wants as that suits what I'm looking for, and it's his decision if he is choosing to cheat. I have not actively gone after him. I know it's wrong but I'm so over doing what is right for everyone else when I just want to have some fun and I deserve that. I have been cheated on in the past  and it is horrible. But if it's not me he will still do this with someone else. My question/worry is that if I meet someone down the track, do you think this would be something they would judge me for given the situation? Does this make me a bad person? I've been with my partner for 2 years now and he has a child with his ex partner. He has baby bump pictures of his ex in his phone, some of which she is completely naked in. Am I being a complete psychopath and jealous because I want a baby with him but he isn't ready so him having these photos makes me super sad and I feel like this is such a horrible thing for me to feel. Is this ok? My partner and I have been together for 6 years and lived together for 4. My ideal bed time is 10pm however my partners isn't until 11pm. I like to go to bed at the same time as I tend to sleep better and don't get interrupted when he gets in. It might seem comical but we are often arguing about bedtime! Is this an area of contention in other relationships? How do you suggest we manage this? Presume other couples like to go to bed at different times so there must be a solution here! A crowd of around 250 gathered to hear Gideon Falter of the Campaign Against Antisemitism demand of the BBC “Where is the proof? Tell the truth”. This is about a bus load of Jewish people heading down London's Oxford St in high spirits, dancing and singing in celebration of Chanukah - only to be attacked by an aggressive group of men shouting anti-Zionist jibes, banging their shoes against the bus windows and panels, performing Nazi sieg heil salutes and then chasing the bus down the road. The BBC covered the incident - but claimed they had heard conclusive proof of an anti-Muslim slur which came from inside the bus. It came from a video recorded by someone inside the bus. BBC London TV went further and broadcast speculation that the slur might've even triggered the group of men into attacking the bus. Joining Gideon on the stage was Fiyaz Mughal OBE of Muslims Against Antisemitism who reminded the crowd that bias against minorities also extends to stereotypes about Muslims too.

The Institute of World Politics
The UN's Human Security Challenge: The Plight of North Korean Refugees in China

The Institute of World Politics

This event is sponsored by the Asia Initiative Lecture Series at The Institute of World Politics. About the lecture: The problems arising from the presence of North Korean refugees in China warrant a human security approach, meriting protection from the UN and the international community. There are three scenarios dreaded by the refugees: first is being caught by North Korean border patrol while trying to escape; second is being subjected to human trafficking ring; and third is being repatriated after being caught by either the Chinese police or North Korea's own secret police operating in China. Despite the 1995 agreement between the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and China, which provides the UNHCR unimpeded access to all refugees within China, the UNHCR has been passive in exerting its mandate to protect the North Korean refugees. One possible solution is the construction of a refugee camp in China or Mongolia. If China allowed for this, it would catapult itself as a genuine “soft power” deserving of the much-coveted G2 status. Otherwise, China's leadership ambition, UNHCR's reputation, and most importantly, human rights of the refugees will remain in jeopardy so long as the discriminatory sŏngbun system in North Korea continues. About the speaker: Ambassador Jung-Hoon Lee is Dean and Professor of International Relations at the Graduate School of International Studies, Yonsei University. He is formerly the ROK government's Ambassador for Human Rights as well as its inaugural Ambassador-at-Large for North Korean Human Rights. On campus, he served as Dean of the Underwood International College and the Office of International Affairs. He has also served as Director of the Institute of Modern Korean Studies, the Yonsei Human Liberty Center, the Center for American Studies (IEWS), and the Center for European Studies (IEWS). His other academic affiliations include a visiting professorship at the Dept. of Politics, Faculty of Law, Keio University, and a senior fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. Ambassador Lee has advised South Korea's National Unification Advisory Council, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Council, and the National Assembly. In the case of the Ministry of Unification, he chaired the Advisory Committee for Humanitarian Affairs. His current domestic commitments include his role as Chairman of SaveNK, an NGO that helps the defector community, Senior Advisor to the Future Korea Weekly, a current affairs magazine, and Chairman of the Board of Tongwon Educational Foundation. Internationally, he is a Board Member of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) based in Washington, D.C., an International Patron of the Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based organization that promotes Hong Kong's democracy, and an Advisory Council Member of the International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute, also based in London. He received his BA from Tufts University, MALD from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (St. Antony's College). In 2017, he published Tongbukah Kyŏkrang ui Hanbokp'anesŏ [In the Midst of a Northeast Asian Current]. His most recent journal contributions include “Déjà Vu in South Korea? Lessons from the 1992 Philippines Withdrawal” in The Washington Quarterly (2020), “The UN's Human Security Challenge: The Plight of North Korean Refugees in China” in the Journal of International Politics (2020), and “North Korea's Nuclear and Human Rights Conundrum: Implications for South Korea's Unification Goal” in Pacific Focus (2020).

A convoy of 50 tractors and utes are set to thunder down Auckland's Queen St tomorrow as thousands of farmers around the country gear up for a "howl of a protest" that will see vehicles parade through urban centres across New Zealand.Groundswell NZ has organised the protest in 47 towns and cities on Friday.Pukekohe to Auckland organiser Scott Bright said that 50 tractors would be escorted by police along the Southern Motorway from Drury starting at 9.20am.The convoy would leave the motorway at Wellesley St, travel down Queen St before going along Beach Rd and rejoining the motorway heading south from Stanley St.People have been encouraged to bring their tractor, ute and dogs for a bark-up in protest against what has been described as "increasing Government interference, unworkable regulations, and unjustified costs".A "massive" number of tractors are expected on Auckland's Queen St down to Southland.Groundswell co-founder Bryce McKenzie, from West Otago, is expecting an "enormous" response to the nationwide event. The only major city Groundswell had left off the itinerary - and that was intentional - was Wellington.McKenzie was expecting a "massive" number of tractors in Auckland's Queen St. The logistics were different in the various areas, with some towns requiring traffic management plans, he said.Bright said a number of vegetable growers would be donating three tonnes of vegetables to the City Mission. The Herald understands a protest planned for Christchurch has been moved out of Cathedral Square as organisers were expecting a large number of participants. Some protesters have been diverted to other Canterbury towns.Christchurch organiser Aaron Stark told John MacDonald on NewstalkZB their main concerns are around constant changes to regulations and the "moving of goal posts"."We're fed up to be honest. Every farmer I know around here, around Canterbury, we're having the talk that maybe it's time to hang up the boots and find something else to do."It's getting to a point where we can't do it."The Otago Daily Times is reporting in Dunedin, organisers have decided it would not be safe for the protest to stop in the city so participants will drive through the Octagon, between about noon and 12.15pm, their dogs barking. They will then return to Mosgiel where former Invermay head Dr Jock Allison would give a short address and Marshall would deliver Groundswell NZ's statement on how it sees things.Even though protest vehicles would be keeping left and letting other traffic flow as smoothly as possible, there would still be significant disruption to the travelling public around Dunedin and Balclutha and more time should be left to get to destinations. In Levin, tradies and farmers are planning to drive their utes and tractors down Oxford St.The local protest group is planning to meet at Donnelly Park at 11am. The convoy would then leave for a drive through Oxford St at noon.Roy Williams, of Levin Scaffolding Ltd, and Ingo Schleuss, of Kapinua, setting up the protest banner south of Levin yesterday. In this episode of the Secret MENS Business podcast we speak to DICK SAVVY about being the Naked Barber, his Self Acceptance and how the gay community can transform itself via self refection. DICK Savvy, a.k.a the Naked Barber, is a well-known figure in the Sydney and Melbourne gay scene, having advertised his services in the gay press and hosted several events in clubs. While there are many have engaged in The Naked Barber’s service, most don’t quite understand what is involved. For those who are curious enough, but not quite brave enough to enquire, media group PLGRM have teamed with Savvy to create a short five-minute documentary on what is reportedly the world’s first and only naked men’s grooming service. The insightful film has Savvy explain his service and why he does what he does. “Having a normal job does not appeal to me,” he said. And on repeat business: “Most women go in for a weekly blow dry… I get a few clients who come in for a weekly scrotum shave.” Enjoy a grooming service like no other with all the fetish grooming details, including Hot Towels, Hot Wax, Cutthroat Shaving and he will even lather you up in Shaving Cream! Twenty years ago this week, the artist Michael Landy famously destroyed every single one of his 7,227 possessions in an artwork called Break Down. The artist looks back on the 14-day event which took place on an industrial conveyor belt inside a disused department store in Oxford St in London, and considers how the process affected him. Since the now notorious Handforth Parish Council Meeting people have been imagining the film version starring Meryl Streep or Lesley Manville as Jackie Weaver, with cameos from Julie Walters and David Bradley, but films take forever to make. Already, though, people have been busy composing Handforth Parish Council, the musical, the opera, the sea shanty and the drill track, shooting videos and posting them online. Millie Taylor, professor of musical theatre assesses some of these almost instant offerings and talks to Kirsty Lang about what they reveal about creativity in lockdown. Cathy Yan joins us from New York, to discuss how her work as journalist in China informed her film, Dead Pigs. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the lives and connections of a disparate group of characters as thousands of dead pigs mysteriously float down the river towards Shanghai. Cathy will discuss what made her want to adapt the story for screen, as well as her experience shooting in China. How has the current situation affected plans for Coventry city of culture 2021, which is due to kick off on 15 May? Chenine Bhathena, creative director, discusses their plans, and how they've dealt with the challenges of lockdown and Covid. The year was 2007. Sydney nightlife was peaking. I had only just started Dj’ing and was already playing in most of the venues on Oxford St 4 nights a week. I decided do an after-hours event called TRASHPALACE. It was on the first floor of The Oxford from 4am until 10am every Sunday morning. It proved an instant success and just a few weeks later we started doing it both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Week after week, hundreds of insatiable party people from all over Sydney packed in from wherever they were clubbing to keep on truckin’ on. It was such a mixed crowd of off-chops all sorts that all sorts of mayhem and magic happened. Oh the sights I saw on that dancefloor! This mixset is a flashback to that time and energy of 2007 & ’08. I will be forever grateful for the love I felt from everyone during those early years. Your encouragement propelled me to start DJ’ing worldwide! The pandemic has been tough for so many. A year without disco lights and dancing is a nightmare for me, but I am blessed to be home with family. I hope we can all get fabulous & trashy soon. Can’t wait to get the green light to party again!!! Until then, keep smiling, keep shining & stay safe. Your contributions go towards my monthly subscription fees. Bob Downe is the stage name of comedian (and polyester lover) Mark Trevorrow, who is… if I can be so bold as to say, a bloody legend. Getting his start in the Globos, a 60s throw back band, in the 80s, his life was turned upside down when the band broke, and in amongst the changes was a move from Melbourne to Sydney. In Sydney he discovered the legendary Albury Hotel, which is one of two queer venues that were used as the inspiration for the film Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert. We caught up to find out about that time in his life, the basement full of drag costumes, and being the ‘dag of dags’!

Aaron Edwards is the owner of Bitter Phew. A Craft Beer Bar located in Darlinghust Sydney. Beer enthusiasts from far and wide have congregated to the 1920's New York-warehouse inspired venue, where 12 taps constantly rotate and showcase some of the finest local and international boutique beers. It could be argued that craft beer and bars are a dime a dozen these days. It's definitely not a bad thing, but when looking at potential business ideas, many people often get trapped in the 'originality' of a business, rather than how you can make an existing service/experience better than the rest. Bitter Phew shows that you don't have to reinvent the wheel, but instead just make it unique and exciting for the potential customer.Aaron is no stranger to event management and establishing venues. The man behind Doris & Beryl's Cocktail Bar in Newtown and Creek & Cella in Leichhardt, he's cut his teeth in the hospitality world, learning the ins and outs of what makes a great venue and ensures that people continue to come back. With Bitter Phew in full swing and having a roaring success, Aaron has set his eyes on his latest venture "Phew", a wine and cocktail bar which is an extension to the Bitter Phew branding. In our chat, Aaron talks about having to step backwards in order to move forward, explains that he needs to always go back to basics when commencing a new business/venture.Bitter Phew's success has come from a conscious organic approach where word of mouth and exclusivity has encouraged enthusiasm and loyalty amongst his visitors. Mainstream marketing does not fit with the branding and as such, the focused, grass roots approach has done the business big favours.Aaron also talks about financial disciplines he applies to his ventures, his background in the self employment world and collaboration ideas where business to business opportunities can help mutual growth. What did you get out of this episode? Here’s what I learnt;1. How long can you work for free? - Preparation is key. It's not just about the financials but also the psychological ground work needed before you dive into a business. Aaron has made a rule that when commencing a business that he does not pay himself for the first 3 months. This involves a lot of preparation but sets up expectations and increases the likelihood of success where money can be reinvested back into the business in those early months. This ensures that it is set up for the long term. The temptation to pay yourself as the dollars start rolling in will be high but preparing yourself and getting clear on your goals before you dive in will set you up for success.2. Financially disciplined - We all need to take our financial education more seriously. For many of us growing up, we were often not taught about how to be financially smart. Aaron shares how he sets up his own accounts so that he has clarity and discipline when it comes to the management of this money. Accounts allocated to Emergencies, savings/personal goals and a everyday transactions ensures that you can stay on track and steer clear of reckless decisions.3. Exclusivity - The nature of your business will determine the appropriate approach, however an element of exclusivity to your business or product can attract a demand and tribal loyalty that will have your customers passionately supporting you. In Aaron's case, he rejected the mainstream marketing option and took on a word of mouth approach for those 'in the know'. He made sure that the people who did come in had that personal touch and felt like they were part of something special.4. Win/win collaboration - Collaboration possibilities are endless however they should never begin with profit in mind. Focus initially on covering costs rather than chasing dollars. Aaron shared his idea of cost price beers to the local barber so they can tell their customers where the beers came from and ultimately drive traffic back to the bar. Bitter Phew wins, barber shop wins (they get cheap beer and improve their customer experience) and the customer of course wins. Everyone's a winner!Follow Bitter Phew via Main Website, Facebook, Untappd and InstagramLocation – 1/137 Oxford St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010

Debbie Sterling is the Founder & CEO @ Goldieblox, an award‐winning toy company on a mission to “disrupt the pink aisle.” An engineer and entrepreneur, Sterling has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Sterling was named TIME's “Person of the Moment” and Business Insider's “30 Women Who Are Changing the World” and is regarded as one of the leaders of the movement toward getting more girls interested in engineering and technology. In January 2014, GoldieBlox beat out more than 20,000 businesses in a contest run by Intuit to become the first‐ever small business to air a commercial during the Super Bowl. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Debbie overcame the "engineering boys club" at Stanford and the a-ha moment that led to the creation of Goldieblox? 2.) How does Debbie look to overcome those really tough times as an entrepreneur, from exclusion to the "engineering boys club" to a harsh reception at an accelerator, how did Debbie look to deal with that personally? 3.) Question from Kanyi Maqubela: Is the gender diversity issue primarily a pipeline problem? Where are the key cracks in the system? What does Debbie believe is the point of key leverage? 4.) Question from Harley Finkelstein @ Shopify: How does Debbie ensure that everyone of Goldieblox's videos go viral as it does? What is both the content creation strategy? How does Debbie look to optimise distribution of their content to attain that virality? 5.) Why does Debbie believe that VCs are missing a massive opportunity by not investing in CPG and hardware? Their portfolio companies have enjoyed exits from the likes of Facebook, Google, Amazon Cisco, AirBnB and including companies like eCommerce pioneer and unicorn, Wish and the world’s leading airspace services platform, AirMap. As for David, prior to TenOneTen, David enjoyed an incredible career in operations starting with the founding of his first company, Firefly in 1995, an early pioneer in personalization and privacy technology which he sold to Microsoft in 1998. David then co-founded PeoplePC, a company dedicated to simplifying the process of joining the online world. The company went public in 2001 and was acquired by EarthLink in 2002. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How David made his way from selling a company to Microsoft and taking the next public to being one of the leading new managers in LA's tech scene? 2.) Why does David believe that market sizing is a futile effort, or as he calls it "Tamfoolery"? What is the right way that founders should present the market to investors, both in discussion and visually? Why is it impossible for investors to foresee market magnitude? 3.) Why does David strongly dislike convertible notes? Why does he believe that they are worse for not only investor but founders too? In what rare cases do they make sense? Why are they completely ridiculous in multi-million $ deals? 4.) Why does David believe that pro-rata rights have become such a mess? How can founders honour the agreements with their early investors and satiate the ownership appetite of A funds? How would David navigate this if he were a founder today? 5.) Why does David believe the biggest asymettry in VC is the DD that founders engage with, in comparison to that of VC on Founder DD? How should founders structure this DD on investors? Chad Richard is the Senior Vice President of Business & Corporate Development @ Yelp, where he leads acquisition and investment activity. Yelp is one of the most active in the space having acquired both NoWait and Turnstyle Analytics, plus selling Eat24 to GrubHub for $287.5m, all in the past year. Prior to Yelp, Chad spent six years at Apple as Senior Director of Worldwide Product Marketing focused on Apple’s operating systems and internet services. Prior to Apple, he cofounded and was CEO of Simple Star, a photo and video software and services company that was acquired by Roxio. If that was not enough, Chad has also advised the likes of Flipboard, MoveWith and Curbside, just to name a few. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How did Chad make his way from startup founder to leading Apple's M&A charge to today, running M&A with Yelp? 2.) What did the Apple M&A strategy look like when Chad was with the company? Why was Apple so keen to pursue a product focussed M&A strategy? What were Chad's big learnings from that experience with Apple? 3.) How does Chad look to build potential startup pipe with Yelp? What attracts Chad to one startup over another? What does Chad wish that startup founders did and knew more about in the initial relationship building phase? 4.) Yelp also makes strategic investments, how does Chad ease founder and VC concern that a strategic investment is not an acquisition? Does a strategic investment prevent a startup from partnering with other firms? What should founders be aware of when accepting strategic investment? 5.) How does Chad analyse the compensation element? Why does Chad believe that valuing potential acquisitions is the hardest element of the process? How do acquirers determine whether to present a cash vs stock deal? What should founders consider with stock deals between private and public company stock? Items Mentioned In Today’s Show: Chad’s Fave Book: Disneywar Chad’s Most Recent Investment: Turnstyle Analytics As always you can follow Harry, The Twenty Minute VC and Chad on Twitter here! Shock World Service 069: The New Objectivity (Jon Averill) 24/7/17 London, United Kingdom 1. Oxford Street Saxophone Man – Unknown Part of my listening experience when I 1st moved to London was about how much background noise overtook music on my headphones, i've always tried to reflect this back into podcasts. 2. Wagner - Das Rheingold, Vorspiel Powerful piece of music i've never quite been able to get into a podcast, until now! 3. Mark Franklin - Release To The System (Beaumont Hannant Remix) From Warp's amazing 1994 compilation Artificial Intelligence 2 4. Delicate Features - Prologue St Petersburg's Delicate Features. Like listening to an opera backwards, in space! 5. Bruce - Before You Sleep A cold hammering drumbeat gives way to emotive electronic shimmers. 6. Visible Cloaks & Dip in the Pool – Valve (Revisited) A crystalline polished soundscape from the Portland duo previously known for the mix; ‘Fairlights, Mallets & Bamboo' 7. Ben Frost - Venter (HTRK Remix) Understated lo-fi textures from Ben Frost 8. Wyatt/Atzmon/Stephen - The Ghosts Within The avant-pop legend Robert Wyatt from his collaborative album ‘For the Ghosts Within'. 9. Gora Sou – Choreography Pristine electronic droplets give way to breathy textures & polyrhythms 10. Aphex Twin - With My Family [48k] Rare Aphex track that's not so rare now as he's just put it up to buy on his new site. 11. Afro-Disiak - Tambours D'Eau Belgium world music from 1988 just given a fresh release on Optimo Music. 12. Seefeel - Spangle 2nd track from Warp's Artificial Intelligence 2 compilation. 13. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Elephantism Theme (edit) 2002's oddly titled ‘Elephantism Theme' winding up this episode. 15. Oxford Street Saxophone Man – Rivers of Babylon [Extract] Part of the same recording that intro'd the podcast. Recorded on phone on Oxford St last year.
