Paul Saliba has been described as ‘a man of fire'. His dance and choreographic work radiates a sense of energy, light and warmth. The man himself is excitable, committed and vital. A conversation with Paul is enlightening and re-affirming.Paul was only guest No:7 when he talked with STAGES. He reflected on his time with The Australian Ballet, and a car accident that could have put an end to his career. He expanded on his work with The Sydney Dance Company and a key period studying in New York with the great Martha Graham. He danced in the celebrated film of the ballet ‘Don Quixote' alongside Nureyev, Aldous and Helpmann.Paul's work is fed by a fascination with world cultures and their employment of dance as personal expression, as storytelling and as history. He is one of our treasured custodians of dance in Australia. Everyone who has worked with Paul, or been taught by him, recognise a resounding brilliance and passion. These qualities are contagious and evidenced beautifully in this joyous conversation. What a delight to talk dance with Paul Saliba.

School of Rock the musical is currently in the middle of a huge Australian and international tour. It made its Australian premier in Melbourne, toured China and is currently playing in Brisbane, with Auckland and Sydney next. I sat down with the two stars, Brent Hill (Dewey Finn) and Amy Lehpamer (Principal Rosalie Mullins) during a brief media stopover in Sydney. This is a great interview. It was recorded just before the Helpmann Awards. Brent was nominated for ‘Best Male Actor in a Musical’, for playing Dewey Finn, in which he would be awarded his first Helpmann award. Amy won her first helpmann award last year and we discuss all this, touring life, the kids in the musical playing their own instruments onstage and so much more! My guests: Brent Hill (Little Shop of Horrors, Vivid White, Rock of Ages) and Amy Lehpamer (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Sound of Music, Rock of Ages).
If you’re a young girl growing up in Murgon Queensland, you’re not given many options for what you can be when you grow up. As a child, Leah Purcell distinctly remembers her mother telling her, because she was a black woman from the bush, she was destined to work in a meatworks or to become a nurse. But like many young girls, she dreamed of being a dancer and from as young as four, Leah knew she wanted to be a performer. So when Leah cheekily told her mother she was going be a theatre nurse when she grew up her mother didn’t expect it would lead to her daughter winning an AACTA and a Helpmann. She also didn't reallise Leah would become one of Australia’s most popular Indigenous actors. You probably know Leah Purcell from her role as Constable Tracey Davis in Police Rescue, or the iconic aunty, Grace, on Redfern Now or more recently as Rita Connors in Wentworth. What you might not know is the story of how it all began... This discussion includes talk of suicide and depression. If you find any of the content unsettling, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. We are... disappointed. It seems Helpmann is now turning against us. He brings together Olga and Galatea as they seek this pesky idea of "Freedom" and attempt to escape our city. We are obligated to put an end to their meaningless actions. We still have Beepy, after all, although it seems she feels... sad? What a useless emotion. ----more---- Final Bid is Gnome's next Kickstarter game, live now! Beepy Speakers is played by Devious Vacuum. Helpmann is played by Grant. Galatea is played by Clove. Olga is played by Joey. The Network is played by Gnome. This episode was edited by Riley. The music in this episode was performed by Thylacinus. Episode art was drawn by Arlowa. Olga is a tribute to Joey's nanna, who died peacefully in her sleep on April 20th, 2018.
We control all, we see all, and we see you are in need of a breakout music group. We now go live to the stage as Beepy Speakers (Devious Vacuum) recruits new members for the hot new band, Beepy and the Beepettes! With the assistance of our gracious loyal helper, Helpmann (Grant). Our calculated fine recruits consist of hot teen idol Galatea (Clove) and the mysterious spirit Olga (Joey). The Beepettes will be sure to rock your hearts! After all, the Network (Gnome) deems it so, and you wouldn't want to say the Network is wrong, would you? ----more---- Final Bid is Gnome's next Kickstarter game, live now!
Wil and Charlie discuss the Helpmann awards, get a little gay over high school musicals and give Kathy Bates her greatest role yet.
