When artist Vincent Fantauzzo was a boy he was a street-fighting petty criminal with dyslexia and a blazing talent for drawing. He escaped jail time, and grew up to become one of Australia's most well-known portrait artists.VIncent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most successful portrait artists. For his luminous, photo-realistic paintings he's won the People's Choice Award at the annual Archibald Prize more than any other artist. He's also won the Moran National Portrait Prize twice, once with a painting of his friend, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and the second time with a painting of his wife, actor Asher Keddie. All the success is a long way from his upbringing in Broadmeadows in Melbourne, when at times it seemed like he was going to end up in jail, or dead.Vincent struggled so badly with dyslexia that he developed elaborate rituals to avoid writing at school, which is partly how he came to drawing. He became a street-fighting petty criminal and he was kicked out of school at 14 and was drawn into a violent world where he had to be extraordinarily streetwise to survive.Vincent still carries the scars of surviving his childhood into the big, beautiful life he's built for himself as one of Australia's most well-known artists. This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, social disadvantage, parenting, father son relationships, boxing, learning disabilities, struggling in school, Hollywood, the art world, Heath Ledger, Kim Ledger, Batman, family, family dynamics, life story, art, portraits, painting, juvenile crime, drug dealing, hot houses, brothers.Unveiled, written with Craig Henderson, is published by Penguin.
This week Brian and Harrison kick things off with a few areas of interest: AFL supporters writing teams off after a few games, they give an update on an ongoing project for another of Brian's sons (‘Ryan's Shed'), Jesse Taylor joins the show to give an update on local football and his job with Powercore, plus, Content Corner is back. Next, the boys are joined by Eddie McGuire. 'Eddie Everywhere' as he's affectionately known is an Australian commentator, journalist and TV presenter, his passion for sport and insatiable appetite for work is unmatched in the Australian media industry. From growing up in Broadmeadows to becoming one of Melbourne's most recognisable identities, there is no secret sauce to Eddie's great success, he's just prided himself on being the most prepared and hardest worker in the room. The character and charisma does of course help, but it's determination at the core. We thank Eddie for his time. If you’re not familiar with the unique football and life story of Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne midfielder Jose Romero, you’re in for a treat in the latest episode of the Glory Days podcast.Romero, who was born in Chile, came to Australia and played 211 high-quality games in the AFL, sat down with former team-mate Bob Murphy this week to recount his footy journey.Romero recounts his voyage to a new country when he was seven years old and struggling with the language barrier, going to school in Broadmeadows and encountering racism, and why he came to love the game of AFL.He remembers how he was zoned to play at North Melbourne as a teenager, why his time at the Kangaroos came to an end, and how he ended up a Bulldog in 1995 when he thought he might be drafted by Carlton.Romero describes how he came out of his shell and became more “aggressive and outspoken”, what it was like playing in a Bulldogs team which was a force in the competition in the late 90s, his memories of Murphy being ‘petrified’ before his first AFL game, the joy of watching the 2016 premiership, and his time spent as an AFL runner and Bulldogs Board member.

In a week dominated by stories of the Black Lives Matter protests in the US and closer to home protests against Aboriginal deaths in custody and the overincarceration of our First Nations people, we look at promising Aboriginal-led decision-making processes that are helping protect culture and keep Aboriginal people safer through the justice system in Victoria. We're talking restorative justice, and we're also talking about a beautiful possum cloak that's keeping culture real and present in the children's court. We hear from Jarrod Hughes, a Taungurung man and Senior Advisor from the Research and Advocacy team at the Centre for Innovative Justice about their Open Circle Restorative Justice program. Website: https://cij.org.au/opencircle/ We also speak with Ashley Morris manager of Koori Services and Programs at the Children's Court of Victoria in Broadmeadows and hear about their Marram-Ngala Ganbu Program an innovative response to the over-representation of Aboriginal children and families in the child protection system in Victoria.Website: https://www.childrenscourt.vic.gov.au/evaluation-marram-ngala-ganbu
When Moana Hope burst onto the footy field wearing a Collingwood jersey for the debut AFLW season in 2017, it was a moment she’d been waiting for her whole life. Having kicked a football around the backyard from the age of three, this athlete, activist and all-round legend has never been afraid to speak her mind (or fight for what she believes is right), both on and off the sporting field.Raised in a family of 14 in Broadmeadows, Melbourne, by an incredibly strong mother she still credits as her biggest inspiration, she went from playing against the boys to representing Australia in one of sport’s biggest arenas at 18 years old. But last year, she made a ridiculously tough choice, withdrawing from the AFLW draft in order to support her family, including wife, Isabella, and her sister, Vinny. As she says in this raw, honest and uplifting chat: “It was either quit my job and play footy. Or play footy and quit my job. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. But it was like a forced decision. Family’s got to come first, because footy doesn’t pay the bills.”In this inspiring conversation with Women’s Health Editor, Jacqui Mooney, she opens up about resilience, marriage equality, surviving tough times, her secret love of high tea (thanks to sporting trailblazer and mentor Susan Alberti) plus her hopes and dreams for the future, including her current IVF journey. But most importantly of all, she shares a message of self-love and acceptance, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. As she says: “Unfortunately, a lot of kids these days are getting caught up on who they think they have to be. But every single person (even identical twins) has something different about them for a reason. We don’t need to be clones of each other. Just be you, and bring out your beautiful uniqueness.” If you’re looking for positivity and a little life inspo, then you’ve come to the right place. He is currently driving for Melbourne's north to become a "Smart City" - an innovation, education and technology hub. In 2016 he published 'Creating Opportunity: Postcodes of Hope', a blueprint for cultural, generational and systemic change delivering lifelong learning, economic development and jobs. This is the first event of Victorian Fabians' Spring Series for 2018, and will feature talks by Professor Barbara Norman and Frank McGuire MP, with a special introduction by Fabian Luminary and National Treasure Barry Jones. Our familiar urban and suburban areas are at the forefront of much of the economic, social and environmental change sweeping Australia. Challenges arise in an arc of suburbs around Melbourne and other major cities. They are the result of the closure of old industries and changes in employment. Furthermore, the rise of inequality between suburbs contributes to the challenges, where some may become waiting rooms of permanent unemployment and a marginalised existence, with little expectation of the better future that spurred on former generations. Challenges to planning are also waiting in the wings from the social and physical effects of climate change, whether from increased numbers of people harmed or displaced by drought and flood, or from the struggle to adapt our cities to new land-use, energy and transport imperatives, as food and energy are stretched and the natural environment put under even more pressure. How can we address these issues so that people can have confidence in the future of the communities in which they live?
