Today’s episode is about love. Specifically, it’s about finding it in your MID years. Maybe for the second, fourth, first time. This is a story about Dr Amantha Imber, an organisational psychologist who got divorced a few years ago. When Amantha knew she wanted to re-partner, she went about it with a typical approach to efficiency - going on more than 50 first dates in her first stint of online dating. Those dates had strict rules and boundaries, time limits and schedules and… they didn’t work. So then, Amantha drew up a brief and cold-called a long list of people in her circle who might know the person she was looking for…. But… well, that didn’t work either. You can learn more about Amantha and follow her work here. You can purchase Amantha's book The Health Habit here. You can also listen to her podcast, How I Work, here. THE END BITS: You can listen to our second ever episode was called the Mid Life Dating Pool Has Wee In it, and it was about Catherine Mahoney’s chaotic app-dating world and it was very very funny here. You can listen to our episode with Divorce & Separation coach, Nikki Parkinson, here. Nikki Parkinson's husband kept assuring her that her suspicions about infidelity were all in her head. And then one day, she got an email in the middle of the night that changed everything...What happened next took Nikki's life apart piece by piece. Six years on, former lawyer Nikki says she made so many mistakes during that time she never wanted other women to do the same. Now she's turned that into her work, becoming a Divorce Coach, Separation Strategist and Co-Parenting expert, and she wants us to celebrate the end of bad marriages as much as we celebrate the beginning of good ones. This is a story of the hard-won expertise that only comes from lived-experience - no matter where you are on the relationship spectrum, Nikki's story has something to teach you about self-preservation, smart preparation, and rising from the ashes of a life you thought was set in stone. Globally, 50% of all marriages end in divorce. And yet despite being so common, divorce is still stigmatised and largely viewed as a failure. There is no established roadmap for divorce, as there is for marriage. It's a confusing, challenging, and often turbulent path that most people sadly find themselves walking alone. Here to change this, and to paint a brighter vision of how we could do divorce better, is divorce doula Nikki Parkinson.Nikki is a family law expert, TEDx speaker, divorce coach, separation strategist, parenting coordinator, co-parenting coach, Parents Under Pressure therapist, mother of 3 and unmarried. Her warm, wise, no-nonsense approach draws on her 25 years of experience in the Australian family law system, as well as her own personal divorce experience. We discuss all the hot-button topics that arise during a divorce, including communication, boundaries and co-parenting, as well as tools for navigating grief. Nikki shares her perspective on how we could reframe divorce as a courageous act of self-advocacy, and ideas for rituals to celebrate this important (and common!) rite of passage in our communities.

Beauty standards when it comes to media have been a controversial topic of discussion for decades. The representation of a certain type of woman has been evident on screen, in marketing and top of the social media algorithm. Today's guest was previously a journalist and accidentally found her way into the world of the online at the young age of 41, long before it was an everyday part of our lives. As a result, Nikki Parkinson has long advocated for a disruption in the way that fashion is marketed to women. Styling You The Label is the first label globally to invest in showcasing its designs on every size that it sells – from 6 to 20. This increases customer confidence and flips the idea that fashion should only be seen on one size, height, age, colour, belief or ability. Nikki has a remarkable story and she shares it with me in today's wonderful discussion. Listen as Nikki and I chat about: Growing up as a 70s wild child under unusual circumstances which were out of the norm and how that has shaped her beliefs and parenting today - specifically the outward confidence that gives inward confidence for her to succeed. Modelist women which deterred her from entering into the media industry earlier in her career. How confidence played its part and the particular look which she felt she couldn't live up to. Putting work into relationships and being able to reflect and learn how to champion the interests of your partner and support their growth and change. How that was a major catalyst for having the courage to leave her former career. Being in a product based industry and how simplicity of life is the end goal right now. For Nikki, it's a privilege to start a conversation and be able continue it with like-minded people anywhere in the world and I encourage you to follow her journey via her blog, website and Instagram @stylingyou and @stylingyouthelabel. She's a business powerhouse and shares the power of community and how you can develop meaningful relationships that will help grow your business. After making the "failure" of getting married young to the wrong man, Lucy Bloom finds empowerment in her divorce, ditches society's judgement, and discovers the joys of living near the beach, as she learns to make decisions based on what she wants. Lucy Bloom is an author, speaker and writer who openly talks about her divorce and how it was not a failure. She has since embraced the opportunity to write her own next chapter, and encourages others to do the same. Nikki Parkinson speaks to Bec Chappell, passionate communicator, Marketing Strategist extraordinaire, and lover of finding solutions. This hearty chat offers spades of grace, humility and a touch of sparkly hope. The kind of hope that we have all wished (or wishing) for during a 1am meltdown. As the pandemic rolled into our lives in early 2020, Bec was facing the biggest year of loss, and later liberation, that could have once floored her. One night, Bec's now ex, turned to her and said, “I don't want to be together”. Her response was brave and true, “I am not going to force you to love me”. During this time, Bec lost her job and was losing her marriage. In a matter of months her world came crashing down. The final blow after months of ghosting by her ex-husband; “I have feelings for someone else”. She could have given up, but instead, Bec decided to take control over her life and heart before it destroyed her any further. It's a story of hearbreak and an epic comeback. Body image is a topic rife with expectations, taboo, nuance and even debate. Nikki Parkinson is here today to discuss just that! Her career path of journalism, fashion writing and design makes her an ideal expert for this topic. That is because at the core of everything that former journalist Nikki Parkinson has done in her "second life" as a blogger, author and now fashion designer has been aimed at helping women find their confidence through the clothes that they wear and the life they lead. The 54-year-old jumped out of her 20-year journalism career in her early 40s and was one of Australia's pioneers in the blogging and then influencing space before Instagram was even a thing. Over the past 13 years, she's built Styling You, an organic, highly engaged community of Australian women aged 35-55, women who have long felt ignored by the traditional fashion industry in an era when more than ever, women in their 40s and 50s are looking for inspiration on how to dress to feel confident for their work and play lifestyles. As a blogger and influencer, Nikki has represented national and international brands. And in 2019 she launched her own fashion label, Styling You The Label, offering Australian-made, non-boring wardrobe basics designed to simplify a busy women's wardrobes. Styling You The Label is the first label globally to feature a model for every size that it stocks, making it easier for women to buy with confidence online. Size diversity is only the start. The label features women of different ages, heights, colours, beliefs, and ability because it values women. Nikki wants women to feel seen and included when it comes to shopping for the clothes they want to wear. Hear from Nikki on: How has body image evolving, and has it changed over time for the better for both men and women? The rise of “clean eating” and wellness, as well as certain diets have become accepted as mainstream – the goal seems to be weight loss only, although the idea of health is also made apparent when you see the marketing. Are these issues we can combat with more diverse projections of “what is a healthy body?” Recently, Australian Fashion Week was applauded for improving the cultural diversity of its models this year, especially when it comes to representing First Nations people. However, you were part of a media article saying the size diversity was missing still. Why does this matter so much? Beyond the size representation how can using different types of models in a brand be done well so it does not come across as tokenistic? How has social media helped or hindered our body mage battle? Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Body Image? To connect with Nikki: Nikki Parkinson | LinkedIn www.stylingyou.com.au www.stylingyoushop.com.au

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, Tory Archbold interviews former journalist, turned blogger and fashion designer, Nikki Parkinson. ‘Styling You’ started when Nikki stepped into the world of blogging. ‘I now have an amazing community and when you open up a little bit of yourself and put out meaningful content that sparks conversations, you connect’ says Nikki. Age is just a number. Nikki says we should ‘own it’. ‘My mother died at age 51, so I am now older then what she ever got to be - so every year is a gift and I don’t shy away from that celebration.’ As the styling queen, Nikki reveals her tips for managing our wardrobe as our body changes through our 30s, 40s and 50s. ‘I’m a big believer in getting up and dressed for the person we are today.’ If an item of clothing doesn’t serve a purpose for Nikki then it goes. ‘If those items are front and centre in your life, reminding you of who you were, it is only going to make you feel worse.’ We need to stop punishing ourselves for being different to who we were. ‘It’s about who you are today.’ Women of all ages struggle with body image and size. ‘When I was a personal stylist, I worked with women from size 6 through to size 26, and all of them had body image issues. It was a real eye-opener for me as I thought everyone smaller than me would be confident in their body - no– body image is universal.’ As we age, or after children ‘the tummy’ becomes a concern. ‘Again, it is about loving the stage our body is in. It’s not about ‘what you should do about it’ but about ‘how we can dress to feel confident.’ This is why Nikki started her fashion label ‘Styling You, where all items are created for women with curves. ‘My community has taught me to look at what we do have – rather than what we don’t.’ Nikki’s business was built on social media and she shares her tips for managing our self-image. ‘Fill your feed with people who align with your values. You need to edit that part of your life. Then, when we mindlessly scroll, we are only going to see things that fill our cup.’ We are starting to see a switch in the conversation around women’s health. Everything from periods, iron, peri-menopause and hormones changes are being brought to light. ‘My best advice is to seek a medical professional who will listen and helps you live your best life. If we are not feeling 100% don’t settle for it.’ For Nikki, it is about feeling the best we can feel – the clothes are an outward reflection but we need to ask ‘what can we do on the inside to feel the best we can feel.’ So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Nikki Parkinson. ProBlogger Podcast: Blog Tips to Help You Make Money Blogging
Blogger Nikki Parkinson Shares How She Built a Business Around Her Blog In today’s episode, I have recorded an interview with one of Australia’s better known bloggers - Nikki Parkinson from the style and fashion blog - Styling You. I first met Nikki at one of our first ever ProBlogger events. While a newish blogger at that time she stood out to me as a blogger to watch - partly because of her journalistic background (she was one of the first journalists I’d seen make the switch) but also because she was someone who was blogging ‘smart’. Most bloggers, back then, were blogging from the heart - blogging just because they had something to say - but Nikki even back then was not just interested and passionate about her topic - she was being smart and strategic with her blogging (at least, that was the impression I got). Nikki started Styling You in July 2008 and today - 9 years later - she’s not only grown her audience, but she’s built a pretty amazing business around her blog. Nikki has written a book, launched her own shop, is an ambassador to numerous brands and has her own paid membership program for readers. In this chat, we go right back to the beginning to talk about how she got started, the mistakes she made and the things she did early that paid off. We talk about her approach to writing, where she gets her ideas for content from and her approach to planning content. I found this fascinating because her approach to planning was very different to what many bloggers teach. We talk about how Nikki built her audience and how to stand out in a competitive niche. Nikki talks about how she’s not just built a large audience - but how she’s built such an engaging community. We talk about her private Facebook group and a strategy she’s using not just to build her group but one that simultaneously builds her email list - really smart. We also talk about how Nikki monetizes - how she made her first dollar, how she works with brands, how she built her membership program and a little about her ‘shop’ where she sells the products she writes about. Nikki also talks a little about the ‘free stuff’ that brands often send bloggers and how she’s turned some of those approaches into paid partnerships. Lastly we talk about productivity and scaling her business by hiring a team to help her. If it sounds like we cover a lot of ground in this interview - you’re right - we do. The cool thing is that while Nikki’s blog is a styling blog for women, I think most of what we cover is really relevant for most niches. So grab a cup of your favorite beverage and settle down with a blanket in your favorite bean bag, or get your hiking shoes on and get ready for a long walk or get that massive pile of ironing that you’ve been ignoring ready… let’s spend the next hour or so with Nikki Parkinson from Styling you Oh - and her dog decides to join us at the end :-) Links and Resources Mentioned on Today’s Show Styling You Sign Up for Nikki’s Facebook Group CoSchedule Listen to our episode on CoSchedule in episode 195 ProBlogger Facebook Group Join the video challenge in our Facebook group Full Transcript Expand to view full transcript Compress to smaller transcript view Darren: Hi there.
