Hello all, The Cricket Slouch podcast is back with a broad post-mortem review of New Zealand's historical whitewash over India in India.I am joined by Shounak and Aryan in dissecting what NZ did well and where India fell behind in this series and wondering what may have been if certain events had panned out differently.Whilst NZ did the basics well, this series loss was a perfect storm of things going wrong for the Indian side and we ponder whether this side is now ready to transition towards youngsters. We talk a little about the squad for the BGT and how India are likely to perform there.Take away message - Paternal obligations are the secret to away wins !Shounak writes features for Emerging Cricket.Aryan writes match reports and feature articles for Guerilla Cricket.
With USA head coach Stuart Law being sacked over the weekend, as the American team turns in a dismal performance against Scotland at League 2 in Texas, Nick Skinner is joined by Emerging Cricket's USA correspondent Nate Hays to discuss the latest off-field turmoil. They also look to some more encouraging news from the women's side, who are currently touring Zimbabwe.
Nick Skinner (home from Iceland), Tim Cutler (commuting to Vanuatu via Sydney from Sri Lanka) and Daniel Beswick (just chilling) all manage to be at the same place at the same time, so why not record bulk Emerging Cricket content! Part 1 of our mailbag/catch-up episode made possible by all of you!
In this episode, I sit down with Shounak and Nate Hays to discuss the upcoming Cricket T20 World Cup from an American perspective. We talk about Nate's foray into cricketing fandom, the Big Innings podcast and his venture with Jomboy, the Ball in Play League. We fawn over USA's first ever series win over Bangladesh and then move on to discuss the various venues for the World Cup, some politics, fan expectations, chances of the USA team, rivalry with Canada, and Nate's involvement in the WC as an Announcer at the grounds, and whether attending the opening match is more important than his daughter's birthday. Some chit chat about other new teams in the tournament then wrap up the episode. Both Shounak and Nate write for Emerging Cricket and Nate's podcast can be found on the website as well as his channel on Youtube.
Apologies for the delay in pushing this out due to availability of the speakers, but we finally get round to having a detailed discussion about the performance of the Indian cricket team in the recent India-England test series. Ajit, Shounak and Sandeep give their views and share their observations in this episode. We talk about the name of the series, individual performances if most players, strategies seen, areas for improvement transition of the team, future prospects, DRS and give due credit to the Selectors and the Coaching staff of the team. The blog article on DRS written in 2011 can be found here. Ajit's podcast can be found here on Spotify. And this links to the Guerilla Cricket website. Shounak's articles can be found at Emerging Cricket website.Big thank you to all the listeners for your support and patronage.
Nick sits down with fellow Emerging Cricket contributor and author Tim Brooks to talk about his upcoming book The Batmaker of Copenhagen. The wartime novel is based on a true story about the Gestapo's pursuit of a man trying to source materials across Denmark to make cricket bats and ensure the game continues to run. Nick and Tim also discuss issues in the emerging game, with a focus on Europe. As always make sure to give us a five star review wherever you are listening and to follow us across the social medias, and as always you can find us at emergingcricket.com. Enjoy!
Greetings to all listeners. In today's episode, I sit down with Shounak , from Emerging Cricket website, and talk about the rise and growth of cricket in the African region, with special emphasis on its development in Nigeria. We also touch on its decline in Kenya, which is a tragedy in its own right. Shounak's interview with the Nigerian Cricket Federation president can be found HERE !A huge thank you to all the listeners for helping The Cricket Slouch cross 3000 unique downloads and for your continued support and patronage over the past couple of years. We truly appreciate it !
As we approach the end of the league phases of the CWC 23, and head into the knock out phase, Sandeep suggested we talk about memorable knock out matches from the ODI World Cups of the past. And to do just that, Sandeep and I are joined by other regular contributors Ajit, of Armchair Cricket and Guerilla Cricket fame, and Shounak, a regular contributor at Emerging Cricket website.Matches discussed -4:10 - India vs England 1987 WC semi final 18:25 - Pakistan vs New Zealand 1992 WC semi final31:50 - India vs Pakistan 1996 WC quarter final47:30 - Australia vs West Indies 1996 WC semi final61:30 - Australia vs South Africa 1999 WC semi final86:30
Welcome to another edition of The Cricket Slouch. Why do we need to talk about ODIs ?In today's episode Shounak, Sandeep and I talk about the recent comments made by Mark Nicholas on the decline of the ODIs and that perhaps we should stop playing ODIs altogether, other than the World Cup.We look at this from the view of a common cricket fan, like us, and try and parse that statement down from various angles and contemplate on the reason for this, as well as come up with reasons why continuing with the format is equally important for the global health of the sport, especially among Associate countries.I hope we have been able to encapsulate this from the viewpoint of an average cricket fan and done justice to the discussion. We then segue into whether acceptance as an Olympic sport will be of any benefit to existing and emerging countries, the cons of this, and how much funding is likely to come in. The Cricket Slouch - @Cricketing_ConvSandeep - @Sportsfan3791Shounak - @Shounak_WA Mark Nicholas' comments can be found on this Cricinfo page.Links to articles penned by Shounak on the Emerging Cricket website.Article 1 – Five Rings, Five Hundred GrandArticle 2 – Cricket makes its long awaited return to OlympicsKimber's viewpoints reference in this show can be heard on his YouTube channel.Kimber's Double Century podcast on Player FM and Apple Podcasts

This episode was recorded before the final match of the CWC Qualifier final between SL and Netherlands, which is a mere formality to decide which team ends in which group for the Ten Team Tournament. It has been a fascinating competition thus far over the past 3 weeks with more than a tournament's fair share of highs, lows, heartbreaks and feel-good stories. To help talk about this further and share their joy over the developments, I have Shounak, who is an Emerging Cricket correspondent, and Ajith from the Armchair Cricket Podcast. Nick is joined by regular Emerging Cricket contributor Tom Grunshaw to help process all the emotions conjured by the Netherlands' scarcely-believable win over the West Indies in their final group match at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Set 374, the Dutch tied in regular time before a remarkable display from Logan van Beek took them home in the Super Over.
Emerging Cricket contributor Tom Grunshaw joins Nick to chat through the news of the week including Nepal's impressive home performance benefitting from the services of an out-on-bail Sandeep Lamichhane, and in other men's cricket, Afghanistan took on the UAE and the Asian U19s Qualifiers got underway.
Daniel Beswick - Co-Founder of Emerging Cricket, and Digital and Editorial content contributor for the ICC - joins The Last Wicket to talk all things Under 19 Women's Cricket. We discuss why we should be excited about the first edition of the ongoing under 19 women's World Cup, the emerging cricketing talent in Indonesia and Rwanda, the participation of senior cricketers in the under 19 World Cup, and even the rising incidence of bowlers running out batsmen at the non-striker's end. Tim, Nick and Bes are back together to try and catch up on all the Emerging Cricket of the past fortnight!
In this episode, I talk to Shounak, a contributor and reporter on the Emerging Cricket website that covers cricket in the non-mainstream nations. We talk about the success of the Emerging teams at the T20 WC, the overall state of the game, how they can benefit from more exposure, funding and to be shown a little more respect by their more illustrious peers. We also bash the ICC a bit and take an optimistic look at the future of Emerging Cricket. Shounak is on twitter @Shounak_WA and he writes for EmergingCricket.com
Once again a packed show in this week's Emerging Cricket podcast after a rowdy hangout last week. Kwibuka Tournament, ACC Women's T20, Challenge in Uganda, Dutch Super League action and we pay tribute to the retiring Pieter Seelaar ❤️
Hours after we recorded our This Week in Cricket episode earlier in the week, news came out that England Cricket legends Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad had been dropped from the Test squad to tour the West Indies. Binksy added a short instant reaction into that episode but the frustration was still brewing, so Baldy jumped on a call to help him talk through the latest in a series of changes going on in English Cricket. Why have they done this? Was it the right thing to do? Is there any way back for Jimmy and Stuart? And what about Dawid Malan? We were planning to pop this segment into our Great Resignation episode, but after the Pat Cummins' press conference, there was quite a bit to digest, so here it is as a stand-alone episode. Enjoy! We'll be back in just a few days with a preview of the Black Caps v South Africa Test series, as well as a recap of the IPL auction and plenty more as the week continues. If you can't wait for that, dip back into our guest episodes, which include the likes of Daniel Beswick from Emerging Cricket, Mike Hussey, Rachin Ravindra, Georgia Wareham, Bharat Sundaresan, Jacob Duffy and many more fantastic characters from around the world. In this episode of the Men's Test Cricket Hall of Fame, we continue our countdown by discussing players 60 to 56 (scroll to the bottom of the description if you can't wait to find out who they are). There's plenty of debate around the table as Baldy and Raj go into bat for an Australian captain, before Binksy threatens to pack up his mic and go home. Lippy sneaks in references to Chris Martin, Mark Richardson and Shane Bond, we talk too much talent, 'that grip' and the most runs in a calendar year, plus share more tales about the joys of watching West Indian fast bowlers from the 1980s. Are any of this group ranked too low? Or are they lucky to be here? We'd love to continue the conversation, so don't hesitate to share your views via email or on social media - or give us some praise if you think we've got things spot on! In this episode of the Men's Test Cricket Hall of Fame, we continue our countdown by discussing players 65 to 61 (scroll to the bottom of the description if you like spoilers). It's another fun group, including some of the most recognisable players that the game has ever seen and heard. There are wickets galore, so many happy memories and some of the best nicknames you could ask for as we reminisce while we examine Baldy's rankings. Is legacy more important than stats? Do average and strike rate matter more than total wickets? Have the Black Caps ever played in Cape Town? Who is the greatest commentator of all time? And who is Joe Mennie? Are any of this group ranked too low? Or are they lucky to be here? Baldy has birds on the mind during this edition of the Test Cricket Hall of Fame, as we count down from 70 to 66. There's pigeons, peacocks, ducks and geese, but best of all, there's a Kiwi. We discuss why Australia hasn't produced more great Test allrounders, as well as the evolution of the flipper and some brilliant batters from South Africa, Pakistan and England - including one who might be a lot higher on this list by the time they retire. Are any of this group ranked too low? Or are they lucky to be here? We'd love to continue the conversation, so don't hesitate to share your views via email or on social media - or give us some praise if we've got things spot on! *SPOILER ALERT* This episode features players from 70-66 in the following order. 70 - Alan Davidson 69 - Clarrie Grimmett 68 - Hashim Amla 67 - Inzamam ul-Haq 66 - Joe Root For an even deeper dive on the theory and process behind the Hall, head to our https://www.thetoporderpodcast.com/hall-of-fame/welcome (website). There's some outrageous claims on this episode of the Men's Test Cricket Hall of Fame as we explore the careers of five fantastic batters ranked from 75 to 71. Is it better to occupy the crease or score your runs quickly? Does a great player have to be a great leader? Is it a good idea to meet your heroes? And did Binksy really say that Baldy has ranked the best English batter of all time at #73? Are any of this group ranked too low? Or are they lucky to be here? We'd love to continue the conversation, so don't hesitate to call us out via email or on social media to share your views - or give us some praise if we've got things spot on! Katey Martin has represented the White Ferns nearly 200 times across an almost 18-year international career, including a rare Test match in 2003. We've heard her dulcet tones as part of the Spark Sport commentary team and through the stump mics, and she joined us last week from MIQ after the UK tour. In this candid chat, Katey took us into the White Ferns camp to discuss events both on and off the field over the past few months - first looking back to evaluate the England series and then looking ahead to the upcoming ODI World Cup in New Zealand in March/April 2022. We talked goals and expectations, the growth of the women's game, riding in a cricket-ball-shaped bus, dial-up internet, what it's like to be sledged by Alyssa Healy and plenty more in this conversation with one of the game's great characters. It's World Cup time, which also means it's preview time! The show starts with an epic Baldwin explainer, before we each select a team to discuss in more detail (no prizes for guessing who we choose). With our biases out of the way, Raj poses four big questions to the group: Which player/s are you most excited to watch? Who is your dark horse team to lift the trophy? Which team will underwhelm? And who will make the semis, final and win it all? We focused largely on the Super 12 stage of the tournament and beyond, but for a rundown of the early stages, you can dip back into recent episodes with Daniel Beswick from Emerging Cricket and Niall O'Brien, commentator and former Ireland wicketkeeper/bat. Have we got it spot on? Or have we got it all wrong? Daniel Beswick from Emerging Cricket talks us through his take on the upcoming T20 WC qualifiers and which countries have the best chance of going through to the Super 12s
Niall O'Brien's international career spanned well past a decade, and included more than 100 ODIs, 30 T20Is and Ireland's first Test match in 2018. He's now a player agent and commentator working all around the world, and joined us from the UAE to discuss the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup and take a stroll down memory lane. We talk Ireland's chances and T20 opportunities on the biggest stage for sides in the first round of the group stage, before Niall takes us into his backyard and schoolground to re-live growing up in a cricket-mad family that's had a huge impact on the game in Ireland. We bounce around from Sydney grade cricket alongside the likes of Shoaib Akhtar and Brett Lee, to ICC World Cups and famous victories against Pakistan in 2007 and England in 2011 - including Niall's match-winning knock in the West Indies. Niall recounts phone calls from Mum telling him to be nicer on commentary to his baby brother Kevin, Trent Johnston's epic speech in 2007, keeping to Murali, being sledged by Warne, throwdowns in the carpark, whether it's ever okay to keep in short sleeves and the pride he has to have represented Ireland over such a long career. As you'd expect, it's a fun chat with plenty of laughs along the way. You can view the Breaking Boundaries documentary we referenced in the podcast via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhjFHumOZVU (this link) - it's an absolute cracker! Keep an eye on your feed over the coming days for our in-depth preview of the Men's T20 World Cup - we focused mainly on the Super 12 stage, but in the meantime scroll further back in our feed and have a listen to our recent conversation with Daniel Beswick from Emerging Cricket, who gave us the lowdown on the first stage of the tournament. It's the same old Top Order, but a new episode structure, with more regular programming heading your way. And it all starts with an old favourite, This Week in Cricket, where we go around the cricketing world to discuss what's caught our eye. The Ashes are on (hopefully), and England have named a nearly full-strength squad, but does Joe Root have enough support to get a positive result? It's business time at the IPL and CSK are already through to the final after another quality knock from Ruturaj Gaikwad and some MS Dhoni magic. But there's no place for the star-studded Mumbai Indians, who were pipped to the post by Lockie Ferguson and his Kolkata Knight Riders. The door to the Women's World Cup title creaked open a little when India broke Australia's ODI streak and then kicked on with strong performances throughout the rest of the tour. Keep your eyes on your feed in about a week's time for more on the Women's World Cup and the White Ferns tour of the UK, as Katey Martin joined the show to take us inside the camp. And the resignation of both Wasim Khan and Ian Watmore has us trying to join the dots, while there's also talk of New Zealand attempting to reschedule their cancelled tour to Pakistan. As mentioned earlier, we're changing things up at The Top Order, which hopefully means more content for you, the listener, but also more focused content so you can pick and choose what you are after. In addition to our This Week in Cricket shows, we'll have one more episode each week where we'll dive into a bigger topic - the first of those is an in-depth preview of the Men's T20 World Cup - and in many weeks we'll also have a third episode for you to enjoy, which will include our Hall of Fame series and special guests. The Hall of Fame is back, and in this episode we discuss two spinners with very different styles, a pair of seamers that made life very uncomfortable for batters and one of the best sweepers the game has ever seen. Raj highlights a clash with The Don, Lippy makes the case for consistent spinners to get more respect, Binksy re-lives Headingley 1981 and Baldy hands out the first award at 'The Toppies'. Are any of this group ranked too low? Or are they lucky to be here? We'd love to continue the conversation, so don't hesitate to call us out via email or on social media to share your views - or give us some praise if we've got things spot on! SPOILER ALERT This episode features players from 80-76 in the following order: 80 - Bill O'Reilly 79 - Rangana Herath 78 - Makhaya Ntini 77 - Bob Willis 76 - Andy Flower For an even deeper dive on the theory and process behind the Hall, head to our https://www.thetoporderpodcast.com/hall-of-fame/welcome (website). We said in one of our recent podcasts that it was a buzz to discover we've got listeners in places as diverse as Spain, Singapore, Nepal and El Salvador, and although the Test playing nations - sometimes a select few - tend to dominate the media, we wanted to shine a light on some of the other cricket going on around the world. To that end, we were joined by Daniel Beswick, one of the founding members of the Emerging Cricket platform, to discuss the the outlook for Associate Cricket sides in the current environment and the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Topics include: Is Associate Cricket on the rise? What are the biggest challenges? The value and importance of major tournaments, such as the upcoming T20 World Cup Opportunities for Associate players in franchise competitions such as the IPL and BBL Cricket at the Olympics What now for Afghanistan Cricket? Are the USA a potential sleeping giant? Players to watch and predictions for the T20 World Cup qualifiers And much more. If you haven't already, we recommend you check out the incredible coverage provided by Daniel and the rest of the team at Emerging Cricket, at their https://emergingcricket.com/ (website), on https://twitter.com/EmergingCricket (Twitter) or via the Emerging Cricket podcast. My guest this week is...me! No, I am not interviewing myself, although that would be fun, I was invited to join the excellent team at Emerging Cricket to discuss the Under 19 World Cup Qualifier cancellation and the ICC decision to hand Papua New Guinea a place at the 2022 World Cup ahead of Japan, because they had a better team 10 years ago (really, that's why). A slightly longer podcast than normal, and be advised, I am a little aggreived at this decision! I As always, please do remember to rate and review the show...if you liked it...and you can comment on the Instagram account www.instagram.com/japan_cricket_podcast should you so desire. In this episode of the Sportageous Cast, we bring you an exclusive conversation with Former CEO Hong Kong & Founder Emerging Cricket, Tim Cutler. Tim talks about how funding can impact on associate cricketing nations, and how the ICC can play a better role to highlight associate cricket. He also shares his journey as Former CEO Hong Kong Cricket and how this role led to his idea behind Emerging Cricket. Emerging Cricket is a volunteer-run associate cricket-focused media platform that shares stories and updates on cricket from around the associate world.
In this special feature interview, we chat with Daniel Beswick from Emerging Cricket on all things Associate Cricket. Daniel passionately talks about how the big 3 could be doing so much more to help grow the game more around the world, as well as what the Olympics can do for cricket. Also, we chat about some of the most exciting players in Associate cricket and who could be the stars of the future. It was such a great interview with Daniel, and we hope you enjoy it!
This week we embark on an ambitious assignment, to discuss cricket on the global stage with guests joining us from opposite sides of the world: Brazil Women's captain Roberta Moretti-Avery, and Emerging Cricket founder Tim Cutler, in Brisbane. Across timezones, continents and calendar days, we chat cricket in Brazil and how Roberta came to the game late, scoring a hundred for her country without even realising it. Tim tells us about his time as CEO of Hong Kong cricket, a job that whet his appetite to associate cricket and led to the formation of emergingcricket.com. We also discuss how Brazil cricket - and associate cricket more generally - has been impacted by COVID, what the immediate future holds, both for Tim, Roberta and their respective teams. If you have a thirst for knowing how the world of cricket works below the Test Playing nations, or you're just a cricket tragic like Tim, Roberta and Tom (and Stef a bit but we're working on him) this is the episode for you. Great fun, real insight into the game of cricket, and important work being done by Roberta and Tim on both women's and emerging cricket.
The common refrain from many cricket fans is that that associate teams are largely just Indian or Pakistani second XI's. But in truth, modern sport is much more complicated than that. So this week we brought on Nishadh Rego from Emerging Cricket to talk about immigration in cricket, throughout history, and how it has changed and built cricket nations. We talk Afghans in Pakistan, Afghans in Germany, Oman and early Australia and South Africa, Ranji, the Thai Women's team and how an Italian footballer had a poster of Allan Border on his bedroom wall. - To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121. On the back of my articles on how the T20 franchises don't pay and why the system isn't working, I brought in Tim Cutler, the former CEO of Hong Kong Cricket to talk. In this episode we look at how T20 is run, why no one is in charge, how it is possible that players aren't being paid, and what you have to do to get a league sanctioned. Cutler founded the Hong Kong Blitz, and now is the founder of Emerging Cricket.
