Bride of Frankenstein (1935):  Directed by James Whale, this classic horror film stars Boris Karloff as the Monster and Colin Clive as Dr. Henry Frankenstein. The story follows Henry Frankenstein, who is coerced by his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (played by Ernest Thesiger), and his original creation, the Monster, to create a mate for the Monster. Despite his initial reluctance, Henry eventually constructs the Bride (portrayed by Elsa Lanchester). However, the Bride rejects the Monster, leading to a tragic and fiery conclusion. The Bride (1985):  Directed by Franc Roddam, this film reimagines the Frankenstein story and stars Sting as Baron Charles Frankenstein and Jennifer Beals as Eva. Unlike the original Monster, Eva is physically perfect and human-like. However, she is repulsed by the Monster (played by Clancy Brown) and rejects him, leading to a series of dramatic events. The cast also includes Geraldine Page and David Rappaport. Bryan and Dave are joined by Tyler Hyde, co-host of the That's Spooky podcast to close out their 2024 Pride series and talk about James Whale's 1935 Magnum Opus, Bride of Frankenstein. It's an absolutely gonzo gothic horror from the dawn of the talkies featuring more thrills and excitement in one of the earliest sequels that somehow manages to end up a better movie than the original. Bride of Frankenstein is a high-energy affair packed with unbelievable characters and performances from some a-list weirdos of their era such as Ernest Thesiger as the sinister Doctor Praetorius and the lovely Elsa Lanchester playing duo roles and Mary Shelley and the iconic Bride who, despite your expectations, occupies the screen for a scant few minutes but still manages to leave a powerful mark on the history of film. There is also a deeply queer interpretation of the movie which begs the question, was this subtext intended by James Whale? Was it purely subconscious? Are we just reaching? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

It's a stormy night somewhere in Wales, and three travelers are having a rough go of it: married couple Phillip and Margaret Waverton, and their passenger in the back seat, the dapper Penderel. That's when they come upon a house, which is, shockingly, old… and dark. They manage to gain entrance after convincing the mute, lumbering butler, Morgan, that they are indeed in distress, and are soon greeted by the house's main occupants, the elderly Femms, Horace and his hard of hearing sister Rebecca. The Femms offer the travelers supper, but as the sternly religious Rebecca finds it inappropriate, no beds. As they sit down to eat a meal of meat and potatoes, two more travelers burst in – the jolly Sir William Porterhouse and his personal companion, Gladys Duquesne. Or is it Perkins? As the evening wends from dinner to conversation to an interest in the rest of the house, things take a turn for the weird, and soon, all are ensnared in a trap – not just to make it through the storm, but to get out of the house alive. José gave an introduction to the MAC's screening of The Old Dark House, a 1932 comedy horror directed by James Whale, focusing on queerness. James Whale was openly gay - although what it meant to be openly gay in the 1930s is up for discussion - and knowledge of his sexuality has led to interpretations of his work in that light, including Frankenstein (1931) and The Invisible Man (1933). The Old Dark House arguably invites such readings more explicitly than those, with the demeanour of Ernest Thesiger as Horace Femm (not to mention his surname), the relationship between Morgan (Boris Karloff) and Saul (Brember Wills), and the casting of a woman in the role of patriarch, with actress Elspeth Dudgeon credited as John Dudgeon. As well as its queerness, we discuss its preponderance of tropes and how well they cohere, its use of distorted imagery, its pacing and more. Recorded on 27th November 2022.

Often heralded as Whales' masterpiece, and a standout among the first cycle of Universal horror films, the movie is a lively and campy classic of horror cinema. Starring Boris Karloff as the monster, and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, the films' true MVP is Ernest Thesiger as the conniving and reptilian Dr. Pretorious. Wonderfully shot and lit, with lavish production design and sets, the film deserves special note as being not a only a sequel that betters it's predecessor, but a sequel that represents a massive leap forward in nearly every regard.

As a follow-up to our Frankenstein episode from last year, we're having a lil' bit of the bubbly and watching its superior sequel, Bride of Frankenstein! Starring Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Valerie Hobson, Ernest Thesiger, and Elsa Lanchester as the title character, Bride is more complex, more audacious, more jam-packed with social commentary, and more fun than the first film. Bride is the apex of the classic Universal Monster movies and it's still fascinating to watch over 80 years later. Join us as we discuss, analyze and laugh! Dan and Garrett are joined by Tori Potenza, host of Butter With That?, to discuss James Whale's seminal sequel THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. The gang discuss Whale's eye for perfect frames and his interest in shooting characters through objects like flowers or fire. They also praise they oddball performances by Ernest Thesiger, Colin Clive, and Una O'Connor, some of Whale's favorite players throughout his career. And while they realize this isn't exactly the romance ol' Frank thinks it will be, they list their favorite horror romances as well. twitter | Facebook | tumblr | iTunes

Love is in the air for monsters, and the team are joined for this episode by special guest Lady Jennifer (The Bride of Lee’n’stein). We dial back the clock to another true classic of Universal Horror, and cinema in general: “The Bride of Frankenstein”, in which Ernest Thesiger grows his own, Karloff shares a blunt with a blind man, and Una O’Connor gets the fear. A lot. Along the way, Lady Jennifer roasts chestnuts on an open fire, Lee unboxes our Welcome To Horror T-Shirts, and Adam is swallowed by a sofa. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. [For anyone wondering - the outro music for this episode is the Bride herself, Elsa Lanchester singing “Fiji Fanny”, from her delightful album “Elsa Lanchester Sings Bawdy Cockney Songs”]
