Entrepreneur and business strategist Daniel Priestley reveals how the industrial age model of 15 years of education, 25 years as a worker, 10 years as a manager, and retirement has been shattered by the digital revolution. Geography no longer dictates your value, physical products have given way to intellectual property and software, and the most successful professionals now operate in fast-action loops - identifying problems, assembling small teams, testing solutions, and scaling rapidly before moving to the next opportunity.Priestley exposes the reality of the new economy where high performers juggle multiple ventures simultaneously - writing books, running agencies, developing AI products, organizing events - all with lean teams of just five people creating extraordinary value. He addresses the common trap of spreading yourself too thin across too many opportunities, becoming a "seven out of ten" at everything, and shares the strategic approach to cycling between expansion and focus phases. For professionals feeling stuck in outdated career models or overwhelmed by endless opportunities, this conversation provides a roadmap for thriving in our high-velocity, digitally-driven economy where adaptability and strategic focus determine success.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter

When I saw the news about the Supreme Court's ruling on the definition of ‘sex', I knew it was a topic I needed to understand better. As a straight cis man, it could be easy for me to ignore these news stories, but as a human, I know it's a topic I can't ignore.Bel Priestley is a trans actress, best known for her breakout role in Netflix's Heartstopper, but her journey to that point is a story filled with pain, bravery and incredible strength. I've known Bel a while, and having seen her tearful TikTok after the Supreme Court ruling, wanted to invite her into the studio to chat.At just 21, Bel has lived through extremes - from being bullied at school to rising as one of Gen Z's most influential LGBTQ+ voices. Through honesty and courage, she's turned her platform into a beacon for trans visibility. She opens up about what it means to be a trans woman in the UK today, especially in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that's shaken her community, and what it's like to navigate love and hate when the odds feel relentlessly stacked against you.Bel shares, with heartbreaking honesty, the darkest chapters of her life: surviving sexual assault, enduring years of abuse and rejection, and the mental toll of fighting simply to exist. But she also shares what it means to find power through pain, how vital her chosen family has been, and why she's most worried not for herself, but for the next generation of trans youth.Through it all, Bel radiates warmth, humour and wisdom. This is a conversation about strength, identity, and the fundamental right to be who you are.You can also follow us on Instagram and Tiktok @greatcompanypodcast and if you've got thoughts, questions and comments, you can email us at greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.uk--THE CREDITSExec Producer: Jemima RathboneAssistant Producer: Gurlina HeerVideo: Jake Ji & Ryley KirbySocial Media: Laura CoughlanGreat Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. Today's poem is about (not) getting the last word. Happy reading.Walter de la Mare, born on April 25, 1873 in London, is considered one of modern literature's chief exemplars of the romantic imagination. His complete works form a sustained treatment of romantic themes: dreams, death, rare states of mind and emotion, fantasy worlds of childhood, and the pursuit of the transcendent. As a youth he attended St. Paul's Cathedral School, and his formal education did not extend beyond this point. Upon graduation he went to work for the Anglo-American (Standard) Oil Company, remaining with the firm for 18 years. De la Mare began writing short stories and poetry while working as a bookkeeper in the company's London office during the 1890s. His first published short story, “Kismet,” appeared in the journal Sketch in 1895. In 1902 he published his first major work, the poetry collection Songs of Childhood, which was recognized as a significant example of children's literature for its creative imagery and variety of meters. Critics often assert that a childlike richness of imagination influenced everything de la Mare wrote, emphasizing his frequent depiction of childhood as a time of intuition, deep emotion, and closeness to spiritual truth. In 1908, following the publication of his novel Henry Brocken and the poetry collection titled Poems, de la Mare was granted a Civil List pension, enabling him to terminate his corporate employment and focus exclusively on writing.….As a poet de la Mare is often compared with Thomas Hardy and William Blake for their respective themes of mortality and visionary illumination. His greatest concern was the creation of a dreamlike tone implying a tangible but nonspecific transcendent reality. This characteristic of the poems has drawn many admirers, though also eliciting criticism that the poet indulged in an undefined sense of mystery without systematic acceptance of any specific doctrine. Some commentators also criticize the poetry for having an archness of tone more suitable for children's verse, while others value this playful quality. It is generally agreed, however, that de la Mare was a skillful manipulator of poetic structure, a skill that is particularly evident in the earlier collections.….For his extravagance of invention de la Mare is sometimes labeled an escapist who retreats from accepted definitions of reality and the relationships of conventional existence. His approach to reality, however, is not escapist; rather, it profoundly explores the world he considered most significant—that of the imagination. In the London Mercury J.B. Priestley favorably concluded in 1924 that de la Mare is “one of that most lovable order of artists who never lose sight of their childhood, but re-live it continually in their work and contrive to find expression for their maturity in it, memories and impressions, its romantic vision of the world.”-bio via Poetry Foundation This is a public episode. Gerald Holtom's CND symbol, known internationally as the ‘peace' symbol, made its debut at a protest march by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament on 4th April, 1958.  The march went from London to Aldermaston, where Britain's nuclear weapons were and still are manufactured. Five hundred cardboard ‘lollipop sticks' displaying the logo were produced - and it's since scarcely been out of circulation as an anti-establishment plea for peace around the world. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly question whether Goya helped influence Holton's iconic design; reveal how author J.B. It began with a hum—low, droning, and relentless. Then came the mutilated livestock, towering shadowy figures lurking in the trees, and glowing orbs that defied the laws of physics. But the true terror arrived when unidentified disc-shaped craft descended onto the ranch, leaving behind more than just questions. Was Clearview Ranch a secret battleground between extraterrestrial factions? A government experiment cloaked in secrecy? Or was something even more sinister at play? Join me as we unravel the enigma of Clearview Ranch, where the natural and the supernatural collide in an eerie tale of high strangeness, cryptid encounters, and UFO phenomena.

I so want to connect with my hearers when I preach or speak. Yes, one has a Message -- the One-Way Love of God embodied in the Compassionate Christ. But if it doesn't really connect with the listener -- with the sufferer! -- it is not able to do its job. J.B. Priestley (d. 1984), who had basically lost whatever faith he had been exposed to as a child, spent a lot of years looking for... something. He would gladly have capitalized "something" (i.e., Something). In 1960 Priestley wrote specifically about the decline of Christianity in the West. He wrote that the only way the "Church" could 'come back' -- which he would have welcomed given the cultural despair and nihilism he observed everywhere around him -- was to get through to the unconscious. Christianity's original, great and contagious strength had been to reach individuals in their depth/s. I agree with JBP. For many years Mary and I have listened to sermons that are sincere, sound theologically, and well prepared exegetically. Yet we often leave the service untouched, un-addressed, un-healed. As Herr Kaesemann said once, after listening to a sermon during a conference at Yale Divinity School: "Es gibt keine Anrede!" In other words, the Word has to address me in the deeps. The preacher's "deeps" need to be calling out to mine (Psalm 42:7). This cast draws on Priestley's "Presence of the Absence"; a John Wyndham paperback from 1953; and -- wait for it -- Spanky & Our Gang. The last track, from 1969, is IMO pure perfection. Oh, and "Out of the Deeps" is dedicated to Mary Zahl, whose recent talk to the Women of the Advent in Birmingham, entitled "The Things That Remain" (https://talkingbird.fireside.fm/400) is as fine as anything I have ever heard her present. I'm thinking about ecclesiology today. Rarely do. But a combination of J.B. Priestley's "low anthropology", a couple of recent lightning bolts from outside space and (present) time, and a fresh glimpse of the touching statue of "The Compassionate Christ" outside Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham: Well, they got me thinking of what the Christian Church is centrally and anchoredly about. Add to that the third verse of Lou Christie's number-one song from 1966, "Lightnin' Strikes"; and it's probably all there. One's ecclesiology, I mean. "Dangerous Corner" by J.B. Priestley, which was first performed in London in 1932, unmasks the human tragedy of self-serving, manipulation, and deception in about as unrelieved a manner as could be imagined. The last scene but one, which leads directly to a character's suicide, surely rips the curtain off our world's endemic conspiratorial malice. It is almost a pure enactment of the "low anthropology" that is endemic to us. But the playwright offers us no hope. He actually, explicitly dismisses the antidote of faith in God. I so want to enter that scene myself, speaking sincerely and personally, and address the desperate "hero". He's got it mostly right, you see; his diagnosis is accurate. But we believe in God -- and not a "deistic"/hands-off sort of force, but rather: Pure Empathy, Pure Sympathy, Pure Mercy, Pure Grace. Our ecclesiology, therefore, is the Church, in whatever form, as Embodiment of One-Way Love. That's PZ's ecclesiology. That's Lou Christie's "chapel in the pines" (1966). That's the churches of refuge at the end of War of the Worlds (1953), that's 'Mr. Carpenter' in Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), that's the Isaiah 2, verse 4 climax of The Colossus of New York (1958), that's the hymn chorale at the end of The Space Children (1958), that's the Christ-figure at the conclusion of The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). And so it goes. When the curtain is ripped away on life as it really is and people as they really are, all that's needed is One Helping Hand, One "Next Voice You Hear" (1951), One... Man from Galilee (Ocean, 1971/Elvis, 1972), One Jesus Christ Superstar. LUV U.

Can't believe I got to see Irma Thomas in person a few years back. (Saw The Stones performing the same song in 1965 on their first American tour. Have to pinch myself that that really happened. But it did.) But time is on my mind just now. This is for two reasons: 1) Two old friends died under conditions that felt like almost the polar opposite of what we would have expected when we were all very young together. There was so much promise and so much hopefulness and so much enthusiasm and so much pluck. But then 50+ years later, aloneness and physical distress and self-despair. Terminal, in fact. Who would have thought? Not I. So I'm seeing each of these old friends as they were when they were 20, then comparing their circumstances at death decades later. Time was not on their side. 2) One of my heroes, J.B. Priestley (d. 1984), wrote plays about this. Especially his 1937 masterpiece Time and the Conways. He tried to understand the meaning, the constituent elements, and the implications of time, and us. I think he came very close. (Time and the Conways, incidentally, was filmed, and very well, in 1985. You can see it right now on YouTube.) Oh, and just to show everyone that time really doesn't matter, within eternal perspective that is, I've put at the end of the cast the absolute best cover version ever recorded of Irma Thomas' famous song. You'll see. Or rather, you'll hear. LUV U.

Anthony Peake was a curious child. While his friends were reading Batman and Superman comics, Anthony immersed himself in learning of the most arcane nature (whilst still keeping an eye on the X-Men and Dr. Strange). It was in 1966, at the age of twelve, that he, quite by accident, came across a copy of The Sky People by Brinsley Le Poer Trench, and from then on, there was no stopping him. The British part-series Man Myth and Magic was read with intense interest, followed by the discovery of John Keel's Project Trojan Horse and Jacques Vallee's Passport to Magonia. What followed was a voracious and unquenchable need to know everything about everything. At university, he chose courses that would accommodate his wide interests, specializing in the sociology of religion, the theory of language development, and the art of the Italian Renaissance. A post-graduate course in management leads Anthony away from his calling as a writer and into a career as a manager in various UK businesses. His interest in the esoteric continued with a growing fascination for quantum physics and neurology developing over the years. It was in the year 2000 that his life was to change. A fortuitous set of circumstances allowed him to take a year's sabbatical from his business career, and he decided to focus the fruits of all his reading and research on writing a book.Exactly one year later, he surfaced with the manuscript of his first book, then entitled Cheating the Ferryman. This book was a distillation of all his areas of interest, quantum physics, neurology, ancient myths, altered states of consciousness, and the mystery of death. However, it was to take five years before this work appeared in print. Thanks to the help of Professor Bruce Greyson of the University of Virginia, an article based upon Anthony's Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis was to appear in the Winter 2004 edition of the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the academic periodical of the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS). A few months later, in early 2005, British publishing house Arcturus bought the rights to the book and, a year later, and after a substantial re-write, Anthony's first book, with the new title Is There Life After Death – The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die was published. The rest, as they say, is history. This book has now sold over 60,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into various foreign language editions, including Spanish, Russian, and Polish. Indeed, Anthony has now had books published in every major European language.Anthony has now written eight books, co-authored a ninth, and co-edited a tenth. All of them develop his Cheating the Ferryman hypothesis into ever-wider areas of application. His approach has always been to apply science to the mysterious and the enigmatic. His tenth book, a work on the time plays and time theories of British author-playwright J.B. Priestley, was published in 2018. In 2019 a sequel to his book, Opening the Doors of Perception, will be published. Also in 2018, an audiobook of Anthony's first work, Is There Life After Death – The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die, was released with Anthony reading his own writings. Please enjoy my conversation with Anthony Peake.
