When Fitz Cahall started his “Dirtbag Diaries” podcast in 2007, he was an avid outdoorsman struggling to make ends meet as a travel writer. At the time, this whole ‘on demand audio storytelling' thing was kind of new, and Fitz saw it as a way of bringing new life to his joy of the outdoors.  Today, he's replaced his wild life bouncing around in a van with the concrete landscape of Seattle, where he continues to host his podcast with his wife, Becca, and their team of producers. And 17 years after they first began, Fitz and crew have now adapted 30 of their favorite “Dirtbag Diaries” into a new book titled States of Adventure: Stories About Finding Yourself by Getting Lost. Cahall recently joined Libby Denkmann to discuss the book, the last 17 years of podcasting, and how he continues to find inspiration in the great outdoors. Today on the show I'm joined by Fitz Cahall, creator of the pioneering outdoor podcast the Dirtbag Diaries and co-founder of creative agency Duct Tape Then Beer. I have to say, I really enjoyed talking with Fitz because for me his work has long been a beacon in a sea of noise. This conversation was everything I hoped it would be: insightful, unpredictable, and authentic. As we talked through things like the origin story of the Dirtbag Diaries, Fitz's early influences and creativity philosophy, and some of his most memorable experiences and stories over the years -  what became clear to me is that Fitz has built his life around an unwavering commitment to what he deeply believes in, which needless to say is pretty damn admirable. Perhaps the most salient example of that is the so called magic rule at Duct Tape Then Beer, which guides all the work at the company. The rule is simple, all work must strengthen and nurture connections to the natural world. Period. If that isn't a noble and compelling mission statement then I don't know what is.   Anyway, I know I learned a thing or two in this one, and I hope you do too.    Show Resources: The Dirtbag Diaries Duct Tape Then Beer (DTTB) DTTB's Magic Rule Becca Cahall (CEO and Co-founder DTTB) Anya Miller (Director, Brand and Creative Strategy DTTB) This American Life - Created by Ira Glass

Today on the show I have Brendan Leonard, who you may also know as Semi-Rad from his popular and hilarious long-running blog by the same name. Brendan is one of those outdoor and adventure creatives who kinda does it all. He's a columnist and contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Adventure Journal respectively, he crafts stories and even produces and shoots his own films, and creates humorous cartoons depicting relatable everyday shit we all go through as human beings and outdoor enthusiasts. What I like most about Brendan and his work, is his ethos (which perhaps not surprisingly as a writer Brendan articulates best). He says: "I created my blog Semi-Rad.com as a channel for those of us who aren't elite climbers, skiers, ultra runners, and alpinists - the folks who love to get out there, but maybe don't take it or themselves too seriously. Semi-Rad is enthusiasm for things regular people can do, adventures for the everyman and woman. It's a website for those of us crushing it, kind of.” That is to say that Brendan believes in the democratization of adventure. You don't need to be climbing 5.14 or kayaking class V whitewater or medaling at your next mountain ultra. Instead as Brendan says, we simply 'need to spend more time doing things we love, going to places that make us feel small, remembering to laugh at ourselves, and getting a little cold, tired, and scared every once in a while.” I couldn't agree more Brendan.   Show resources: Semi-Rad (Brendan's) blog New book coming out! “Bears Don't Care About Your Problems” The Art of Getting Lost and other books by Brendan Guide to Peak Bagging Films by Brendan Leonard Blog post about releasing a book Mountaineer's books Between the Covers - bookstore in in Telluride, CO Mountain Film (film festival) 5Point Adventure Film Festival Banff Mountain Film Platforms for creating books: Lightning Source, Ingrim Spark, Create Space The Dirtbag Diaries (great podcast by Fitz Cahall of Duct Tape Then Beer) Adventure Journal - Steve Casmiro (editor) Patreon Outdoor Research (brand partner) Forest Woodward - Film Maker Seth Godin - Marketing thought leader Canon 5D (recommended camera)   Show topics/themes: Self publishing— the pros and cons of doing it yourself, marketing yourself, and finding the balance when making deals with publishers The path to sobriety from addiction Keeping up a blog— making a commitment, being patient, and practicing determination The writing process: anyone can be a writer, just not everyone sticks with it. the difference is actually sitting down and doing the work. On a Grand Canyon trip, Luisa watched her friends snapping staged camp photos. When she returned home, she realized manicured, curated outdoor photos peppered her Instagram feed. Fed up with the lack of transparency in marketing, Luisa created @youdidnotsleepthere and began to poke fun at the phony presentations of tent sites on social media. Then we talk with Fitz Cahall, creator of The Dirtbag Diaries. Fitz realized the negative potential of acting like a brand following two near-miss climbing accidents-- you limit your ability to grow as a person. Learn more about your ad choices. "I think the jack of all trades gets a bum rap. The jack is the master of none, but I think the jack probably has a lot of fun," says Fitz Cahall. We open our annual Year of Big Ideas with an ode to “mediocrity” from Fitz, then turn, as always, to our community for inspiration for the coming year.

Looking west from Seattle, the skyline of Olympic National Park is defined by the notched peak of The Brothers. "I see it stuck in traffic. I see it from meeting rooms in downtown Seattle. I see it on my evening runs that I use to stay in shape for my days in the mountains. I've looked at that skyline and imagined the light, the wind and thought, 'I could be standing on that peak,' -- instead of dealing with 'this', whatever 'this' is," writes Fitz Cahall.  It can be easy to wallow in the constraints, responsibilities, and duties of life. It can be so damn easy to play the grass is greener game. When Fitz takes a spring Friday to go and climb The Brothers, he gets a chance to look back in the opposite direction and realizes that it's not about which side is greener. It can be as simple as going when you get a green light.

"Our four seater plane touched down on a small gravel bar in the heart of the Brooks Range. We unloaded. The engine roared back to life, and the plane disappeared down valley into the blue-gray mountains. Then, the mosquitos came," writes Fitz Cahall. In May, Fitz received an email that contained a golden ticket--a float trip down the Kongakut River through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. There was just one problem: the timeline collided with prior commitments to family and friends. How one email, one trip and one decision to say yes crystallized Fitz's commitment to responsibility and desire.

"In the day to day tangle of life, it's easy to let go of the things that provide focus, and calm and perspective," writes Fitz Cahall. "I find that serenity so easily in wilderness. How do we carry that home?" While on a trip to Minnesota's Boundary Waters, Fitz resolved to do something back in "regular life" to try to tap into that quietness every day, for one year.

An interview with adventure filmmaker Bryan Smith It's been more than a month since the last podcast. Thanks to everyone for all the emails and Facebook messages asking for the next edition. After an action packed first season of production, the realities of life came crashing down like a devastating wave. The recession of 2009 made times a bit tough. Simply put the project was placed indefinite hold while I scrambled together a few odd writing jobs through the end of December and all of January. I had to work to make enough cash to pay our property tax bill. I'm happy to say that I recently wrote a fat check to city of Madison and now the project is back on track. Bryan Smith I've learned a lot through that first season. With the collapse of traditional media, as newspapers and magazine continue to fold up under the weight of an antiquated model of communication, I've discovered that this form of storytelling, sharing music, art and adventure online is the wave of the future. With many creative souls out there building new high quality content for Internet there's no shortage of great stories to tell. If you've been following along on the blog and on Facebook, you'll know that I've been more than a little busy still traveling and finding new subjects to share with you. And in the process I've become thoroughly inspired by the work of many others who are pushing the boundaries of creative expression as they explore the heights and depths of the human spirit. You've heard me mention my friend Fitz Cahall. He's the creator of my favorite podcast The Dirtbag Diaries. Fitz has new project that recently posted the Internet, a series of short films that depict the lives of adventurers chasing their passion through course of a year, a season. I connected with Fitz toward the end of last year during the Banff Mountain Film Festival. There I saw the premiere edition of the 22 part film series The Season. It's an exciting yet, moderately paced thoughtful contemplation on what motivates ordinary people who do exceptional things in the outdoors. At the Banff Centre for mountain culture, in Alberta Canada, I also met Fitz's partner co-producer and director of the Season Bryan Smith. Produced exclusively for distribution online, the Season brings Internet adventure storytelling to a new level. Directed by Bryan Smith this new film series illustrates the narrative behind the lives of people like each of us who aspire to lead a rich live in adventure. Today’s guest on the show is Fitz Cahall.  Fitz is a podcaster, filmmaker and storyteller at Duct Tape Then Beer.  He is the producer and host of the Dirtbag Diaries, one of the most popular podcast series focused on outdoor adventure, and he’s also the director of the new film, Paul’s Boots. I had a lot of fun talking with Fitz - there aren’t too many other people out there that share my same passions for both filmmaking and podcasting!  I was particularly interested to hear about Fitz’s approach towards producing and directing his film, Paul’s Boots.  Paul’s Boots is about a unique journey across the Appalachian Trail - any anyone who follows this podcast series knows that that Appalachian Trail holds a very special place in my heart.  I produced my own film about a trip across the Long Trail in Vermont - the trail that inspired the creation of the Appalachian Trail. Beyond my own fascination with long distance hiking however, I’m also excited about this conversation with Fitz because we are actually screening his film Paul’s Boots as a part of Les Bois Film Festival, the local Boise film fest that we co-host with the Land Trust of the Treasure Valley.  So our listeners in Boise will actually have the opportunity to see this film up on the big screen at the Egyptian Theatre this coming Saturday.

If you’re like me, you are a total sucker for story. The kind that make me lean-in, as if my ears closer to the speaker could possibly offer more, is my favorite. I’ve come to learn that this is, in fact, a nearly universal human trait, emerging spontaneously in childhood, and existing in all cultures studied thus far. Humans have been telling stories for thousands of years, sharing them orally even before the invention of writing. They allow people to see patterns where there is chaos, meaning where there is randomness. Humans are inclined to see narratives where there are none because it can afford meaning to our lives—taking on a form of existential problem-solving. As Spring begins to hint of Summer and outdoor adventures start filling up my calendar, it feels like the season of storytelling; shared on the trail, around the campfire, over beers after some epic Type II fun. Amid all of it, I ache for ways to take more people with me to these places, to engage them in these experiences, to awaken a passion in them for the preservation and protection of nature. When Matt Podolsky interviewed Fitz Cahall, well-known outdoor adventure storyteller, I left the show filled with inspiration on doing just this. In honor of this seasonal transition, I wanted to re-broadcast this show on the off-chance it may prove equally inspirational for others.
