The White House dropped a surprise last night in naming US conservative heavyweight Leo Brent Bozell, rather than frontrunner Joel Pollak, as its choice to become the ambassador to South Africa. Bozell is an anti-mainstream media activist, best known for founding (in 1987) and running the Media Research Centre, whose stated mission is to “expose and neutralise… the (US) national news media.” Bozell is also a vocal strong supporter of Israel. The homeless man tackled and zip-tied by onlookers who say he was trying to start fires with a blowtorch near a Los Angeles wildfire is an illegal immigrant who will likely be protected by California's sanctuary city status, according to sources. The suspect is Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva, a Mexican national who is in the United States illegally, sources told The Post. He was chased and taken down by residents of Woodland Hills after they allegedly saw him torching old Christmas trees and debris on fire with what one resident described as a “flamethrower” soon after the massive wildfire began Thursday.

Our guest is Rachel Kushner. Her writing includes novels like The Mars Room and The Flamethrowers, and essays on everything from prison abolition to art theory and motorcycle racing. Her fourth novel, Creation Lake, is Kushner's take on noir. It follows a young woman infiltrating a French anarchist collective. On December 12th, 2024, Kushner came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk to Jonah Wiener, a culture journalist and contributing writer at the New York Times Magazine. The conversation was wide-ranging, from her research process, to her travels in France, and her opinions on the Tesla Cybertruck.
