Scientists think that hobbits—yes, real-life hobbits—may still be roaming an Indonesian island! These aren't the ones from The Lord of the Rings, but a tiny human species called Homo floresiensis, nicknamed "hobbits" because of their short height. They were thought to have gone extinct around 50,000 years ago, but some researchers believe they could still be hiding deep in the forests of Flores Island. Locals have passed down stories for generations about small, human-like creatures living in remote areas, avoiding contact with people. Could these tales actually be true? If so, it would be one of the biggest discoveries in history—proof that another human species still walks among us! This is the final episode of 2023. And it is an odd episode. My guest is Gregory Forth. He is an anthropologist who specializes in the biological theories of indigenous peoples. Forth was doing this work on the Flores Island, Indonesia, during the 2003 discovery of a new hominin species: Homo floresiensis. This was an exciting discovery for many. But Forth was, in his own words, "gobsmacked". In his own studies, Forth had been puzzling over a species the local people called lai ho'a, a creature that was not quite human and not quite monkey. It was something in between. According to the local people, the lai ho'a live deep in the local rainforest. They are difficult to see. But people do see one occasionally. They are about a meter in height, just as Homo floresiensis. And they walk on two legs – a feature that separates humans from other mammals. So what should we make of all of this? Could Homo floresiensis, or its descendants, still be alive? Or is this just another fantasy in the realm of cryptozoology? And what would it be like to encounter a species that is half human, half ape? What rights would they get? How would it challenge our ideas about "humanity"? In the far reaches of Indonesia lies Flores, a long narrow island of high mountains, precipitous cliffs, and deep ravines. While doing fieldwork on this remote island, our guest today - anthropologist Gregory Forth - came across people talking about a half-apelike, half-humanlike creature that once lived in a cave on the slopes of a nearby volcano. Over the years he continued to record what locals had to say about these mystery hominoids while searching for ways to explain them as imaginary symbols of the wild or other cultural representations. In his latest book - “Between Ape and Human: An Anthropologist on the Trail of a Hidden Hominoid”, you can follow him as he explores the mystery of this hominoid, and the space they occupy in Lio cultures as both natural creatures and supernatural beings. Why it's especially of interest to Fans of History In 2003, several skeletons of a small-statured early human species were excavated in a cave in western Flores. Named Homo floresiensis, this ancient hominin was believed to have lived as recently as 12,000 years ago—possibly overlapping with the appearance of Homo sapiens on Flores. In view of this timing and the striking resemblance to the mystery creatures described by the islanders, Dr. Forth began to think about the creatures as possibly reflecting a real species, now extinct but retained in the cultural memory. He was the RSGB’s Patron from 1952 and joined the Society on several occasions. These included special event stations, anniversary events and exhibitions. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 9th of April. We had yet another week with poor sunspot numbers. Although we started the week with a sunspot number of 11, representing one spot in one group, it didn’t take long for this to decline and we were back to zero spots again and a solar flux index of 76. What we did have, however, were the effects of a high-speed stream from a coronal hole, which sent the Kp index up to five during the afternoon of Wednesday the seventh. This was relatively short-lived though and the Kp index was back to one by Thursday morning. A pre-auroral event enhancement saw MUFs climb above 21MHz on Wednesday, which saw some DX being worked via FT8 on 15 metres. Otherwise, the DX attention has been on the Russian C92RU DXpedition to Mozambique. This has been worked by UK amateurs on all bands from 160m to 15m and the propagation prediction engine at predtest.uk shows that your best chance of working them is from 1600 to 1800UTC on 30 metres, 20 metres and 17 metres. They have also been worked on the low bands in the late evening and early hours. They are currently due to dismantle their station on Tuesday the 13th of April so don’t delay if you want C92 in the log. Next week NOAA predicts the solar flux index will remain around 70-72, with a maximum Kp index of two. As of Thursday, there were no obvious coronal holes rotating into view, which bodes well for HF propagation over the next few days. Let’s hope it continues until the end of next week. And now the VHF and up propagation news. This weekend we start the period with a wintry theme to the weather, especially in the north, and a longer period of rain sleet or snow over the Downs in the south. This means it's a rain scatter story for the GHz bands again. The models diverge after midweek, when one evolution brings an area of high pressure in from the west, while others stick with the unsettled showery theme. This means that the coming week is largely a rain scatter option, with an outside chance of a new high in the second half of the week for a hint of Tropo. The tropo.F5LEN.org maps show no tropo over the UK until this coming Friday when conditions look promising over the sea path from the North of Scotland up to the Faroe Islands. As mentioned last week we are getting closer to the next Sporadic-E season, so as usual the message is to check 10m and 6m for signs of activity, especially on the digital modes. Moon declination is positive again so peak Moon elevations and visibility windows will increase as the week progresses. The Moon reaches apogee on Wednesday so path losses will begin to fall from then. We are slowly coming out of the annual meteor activity minimum, with the April Lyrids starting to ramp up to their peak on the 22nd. Already there are signs of more meteor reflections being reported. And that’s all from the propagation team this week.

At least six countries have opened investigations into the scandal, which implicates high-level officials and major financial institutions. *) Thousands buy Covid-19 vaccines in Pakistan Thousands of Pakistanis are queuing up to spend $80 on the two-shot Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine. Last month, the country allowed the private sector to import vaccines and sell it to the public. Despite the cost and government issuing free jabs, the vaccines are almost sold out and are being bought largely by young people. *) Landslides kill scores in Indonesia Flash floods and landslides in Indonesia's Flores Island and neighbouring East Timor have killed dozens of people and displaced many more. Several are also reported missing after homes were buried in mud. Indonesia's weather agency says a tropical cyclone is approaching, which could bring more rain and floods. And finally … *) Tom Brady’s rookie card sells for record amount The so-called Holy Grail of Tom Brady's rookie cards sold for a record $2.25 million at auction to an anonymous buyer. The sale comes two months after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback picked up his seventh NFL Super Bowl title. Last month, another card from Brady's rookie season fetched $1.32 million in an online auction.

Indonesian police have arrested smugglers selling Komodo dragons online. Last March, five animal smugglers were apprehended after being caught using Facebook to sell endangered animals. Komodo dragons, which are the world's largest lizards, were among the animals on sale. The police recovered five Komodo dragons after arresting the smugglers. However, the smugglers had already sold over 41 Komodo dragons for up to $1,400 each. The smugglers captured the reptiles from Flores Island and were about to deliver the remaining five dragons to Singapore. From there, the animals would have been transported to three countries in Southeast Asia. The smuggling of Komodo dragons is a very lucrative but illegal business in Indonesia. In the past, smugglers had sold Komodo dragons for prices ranging from $1,000 to $1,400 apiece. The reptiles, which are often kept as exotic pets, are sold at extravagant prices because their blood can be used to create antibiotics. Komodo dragons are an endangered species found in a group of islands in Indonesia. They are threatened not only by smuggling but also by the destruction of their natural habitat at the hands of locals and tourists. As of last year, only around 6,000 dragons have been accounted for, with only 350 females capable of reproducing. To save Komodo dragons, national and international regulatory bodies have passed laws against the reptile's exploitation. Indonesian law punishes smuggling these animals with prison terms and high fines reaching $7,000. International environmental laws, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, also protect Komodo dragons.

Richard learns of the incredible Flores Island discovery in the newspaper. In the process of researching the find, he revisits the events that have lead to his professional and personal decline.

In 2003 and 2004, a team of Australian and Indonesian anthropologists made some interesting discoveries in a cave on Indonesia's Flores island -- bones from small creatures, that may just prove to be cousins of humanity. Since these bones came from adults, but they apparently stood only about 3 feet tall, they were almost immediately christened "hobbits." These creatures seem to be more closely related to ancient hominids than to modern humans -- but were still alive 18,000 years ago, long after Neanderthal died out. While the initial fossil discovery was well publicized, more recent news hasn't been covered as thoroughly. Listen in, and I'll give you a summary of what's been found, and where things stand.
