“Indonesia has the potential to lead in eco-tourism, in cultural heritage and in Muslim-friendly tourism... but it tries to promote everything all at once, which dilutes the message.” Beautiful, vast and complex, Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago nation, and home to the planet's fourth-largest population. But tourism is heavily concentrated in Bali, which recorded 45% of inbound arrivals to Indonesia in 2024. Meanwhile, Indonesia lags behind Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam for visitor arrivals, attracting 13.1 million visitors in 2024, while generating more than 1 billion domestic trips. So why does it underperform for inbound tourism? This week, Gary is joined by Bali-based travel executive Nur Wulan T, who has worked for leading travel-tech players and airlines, including Garuda, Traveloka, Tiket.com and STAAH, and is a speaker on tourism and hospitality topics. We discuss the diverse impacts of Indonesia's infrastructure deficit and high domestic airfares. Plus, we asses the mixed progress of the 5 Super Priority Destinations - Lake Toba, Borobudur, Labuan Bajo, Mandalika and Likupang - and Bali's long-touted second airport. Wulan also explains the untapped potential of Sumba and Papua, the lessons to be learned from other Asian countries that are pushing creative boundaries in Muslim tourism, and areas for improvement in destination marketing.

Today, we're headed deep off the beaten path to a forgotten island in Indonesia called Sumba. While it's twice as large as Bali and has only 700,000 inhabitants - Sumba has barely any tourism to the island.  If it's starting to sound TOO remote, don't worry because we uncovered a luxury gem, or as our guest, James McBride, would call it - geographically opulent.  James is the CEO of NIHI Sumba, a gorgeous property on a beautiful swath of beach. But the big draw here is the experiences - from world class surfing, to free diving, to spending special moments with the property's famous horses.  James and I talk about the culture of the island which has persisted for thousands of years, the stunning landscape, and how NIHI's philosophy of organic growth has led to this one of a kind experience.  So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this interesting episode of Luxury Travel Insider.  Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com   Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn

Inge De Lathauwer is the founder of Sumba Hospitality Foundation but everyone calls her "Ibu Inge" on the remote Indonesian island of Sumba.  As a lifelong charity worker, she had previously witnessed the disastrous consequences of poorly planned charities. To better understand the dreams and aspirations of the Sumbanese people, Inge decided to spend more time listening. Not only to their stories of hardship and struggle but also to their hopes and ideas for the future.  The idea was born of building a hotel school that would teach young Sumbanese people the hospitality skills they needed to contribute to the tourism development on the island. Sumba is one of the poorest regions in Indonesia. While tourism is gradually developing, Sumba Hospitality Foundation believes responsible tourism is the only way to protect this fragile island in a way local communities can benefit. To end the circle of poverty, young adults are encouraged to dream big and empower themselves through education, training, and work experience. Last but not least, Sumba Hospitality Foundation aims to raise environmental awareness with students, tourists, and local communities.  Visit the Sumba Hospitality website: https://www.sumbahospitalityfoundation.org/
