The World Health Organization failed to draft a treaty to drive the global response to a potential future pandemic, but that doesn't mean it won't try again. A legacy media outlet quietly erased the fact that it falsely reported 215 graves were uncovered at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Two men have been charged in a human smuggling case that the U.S. Department of Justice has called a “dangerous scheme” to traffic people from British Columbia into the United States. The truth matters, and it often falls victim when the dominant ideology is being promoted. In this episode, we use the examples of the Kamloops Residential School and the Nicholas Sandmann case to discuss the importance of discernment, and the lack of discernment that has often been shown, even in the evangelical world. In this episode, I go through the following article, published in January of this year: https://www.dorchesterreview.ca/blogs/news/in-kamloops-not-one-body-has-been-found

In spring of 2021, news broke that the bodies of hundreds of potential murder victims, mostly children, were uncovered in a mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School. It was horrible news. Children snatched away from their families, punished for their culture, and abused until their were dead at the hands of the Catholic Church. There were even bones, a tooth and a rib bone just lying there on the ground, evidence of a genocidal crime. That's how the story was first reported, anyway. But then it quickly evolved. Perhaps it was a series of graves and not a pit. Maybe the tooth wasn't a tooth at all. Maybe the graves were previous ground disturbances. And then news of any subsequent investigation or excavation at the site just went dark. Why did this alleged crime scene not see the same sort of fulsome forensic investigation as the Pickton Farm, where dozens of women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside met their gruesome ends at the hands of a serial killer? Why wasn't the woman who claimed to discover the graves insisting on it? The facts of the story were not necessary for a spate of church burnings and vandalism — 69 in total — to kick off across the country last summer. What really happened in Kamloops? Rebel News reporter Drea Humphrey has a brand-new documentary out today at http://www.RebelNewsPlus.com which details her attempts to follow the facts where ever they may lead. It's called Kamloops: The Buried Truth, and Drea joins me today to discuss what she discovered and why she felt compelled to dig deeper.

Following our conversation about the movie Big Fish, Blake reached to Troy Hill -  an Indigenous educator, a father and a son to a larger-than-life man whose stories, like those portrayed in the movie, seemed to defy authenticity. The conversation was supposed to be about how one reconciles such tall tales with reality. But Blake and Troy ended up talking about a different kind of truth and reconciliation – one that's particularly relevant as Canadians mark the first national holiday dedicated to those goals. In their conversation, Troy recounts how he learned of his father's experiences at a residential school and the toll it has taken on his family. Just a few days later, news broke about the discovery of the remains of more than 200 children at the Kamloops Residential School.  Today, in honour of this first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we're presenting their conversation again. Though the discoveries themselves are not discussed, we feel Troy's story is an important one. Please take the time to listen, and share it with a friend.

In this episode I am looking at the Native American Residential Schools here in America.  Ever since June, when the graves of 215 Indigenous School children were found at the site of the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia and, weeks later, 751 unmarked graves were found at the site of the  Marieval Indian Residential School in  Marieval,  Saskatchewan , attention has been drawn to similar boarding or residential schools for Native Americans here in America.   Although the concept of residential schools can be traced back to 1634 Maryland, they did not gain the support of the U.S. Government until 1879 when Richard Henry Pratt opened the Carlisle Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. While it's impossible to teach every good and bad thing in American History in school, I believe we need to look at it all.  As Americans we have a lot to be proud of, but we also have a lot to learn from.  We should be having these conversations.  Maybe not all of them in school but sometime, somewhere, so that we can learn from them. Please don't forget to check out my friends at Kahuna Window Cleaning for all of your home care needs.  If this show brings any value to your day, please consider showing your support.  It would be greatly appreciated.

We've had more conversations about our own as many of us struggled with new uncertainties and challenges this past year, but also more conversations about the mental health of public figures (Naomi Osaka's recent appearance in the news comes to mind). So, do Canadians feel comfortable prioritizing their mental health at work without fear of facing stigma? Her search of an area on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School identified 200 of what she called remaining "targets of interest," which may be graves. Tedros says the Geneva-based body is “asking actually China to be transparent, open and cooperate, especially on the information, raw data that we asked for at the early days of the pandemic.” He also says there had been a “premature push” to rule out the theory that the coronavirus might have escaped from a Chinese government lab in Wuhan. Here's the link to one of the articles from NEWS 1130 : https://www.citynews1130.com/.../cancel-canada-day.../ The word "Cancel" has been THE word of 2021 and you may have heard of the phrase "Cancel Culture." Is this another example of cancel culture? Or is this completely different? This Wednesday, Jonathan LK Chan offers his Christian opinion on the subject of Cancel Culture AND if cancelling Canada Day is related or not. Want to know more about Company of Disciples? In an attempt to be topical, Sabrina goes through the storied history of polio in Manitoba - from the early epidemic era, through bizarre treatment ideas and wonky science, to one of Canada's largest vaccination initiatives. We promise, we didn't want this episode to feel quite as relevant as it does.   Content Warning: This episode was recorded over a month ago, before the discovery of the bodies of 215 children at the former Kamloops Residential School. The recent discovery of 215 bodies at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia, Canada surprised everyone except Native people. For several decades survivors of these genocidal institutions have told stories of the abuse, neglect and violence that they experienced at these schools but the general public largely ignored them. In this episode, we take another look at the genocidal residential school system implemented by the Canadians and the Americans. Just days before entering June - which is National Indigenous History Month - remains of 215 indigenous children were found in a mass grave at the Kamloops Residential School on the Tk'emlúps te Secwe̓pemc First Nation. This horrific discovery has brought to light the lesser known struggles of the indigenous peoples of Canada via various laws under the Indian Act and in particular via the forced assimilation of indigenous children into the new Christian Euro-Canadian society created via European colonial settlers via residential schools. These schools are arguably the darkest hour in Canada's history and have echoed into the present, still impacting the communities that have suffered. In this episode we briefly run through the history of discrimination and oppression that indigenous communities in Canada face while reflecting on our role and experiences as immigrants here.

This conversation was recorded before the May 29th news release that 215 Indigenous children were discovered buried outside the old Kamloops Residential School. This school is located on Sunny's traditional territory. This tragic reminder of Canada's past and present racist policies is a wake-up call and a call to action. For many Canadians, this is the first they have learned of the shocking practices of our country and the church. I hope this conversation furthers your learning and inspires you to learn more. Thank you for your courage to be here and listen. What is reconciliation?  I can't think of a better time to ask this question and listen for the answers. In this circle, we are joined by Sunny LeBourdais of the Pellt'iqt te Secwepemc Nation and Qwastanaya (L.Maynard Harry) of the Tla'amin Nation to hear the stories of their communities, the brave leadership work they are doing, and the hopes for the future. What I have learned about reconciliation is that it must start with the truth. In this conversation, you will hear the truth in very clear and direct ways. This experience is both an education and a call to action. Please take care of yourself as you listen in, and know that by letting these words soak in and change you, you can make a difference. What's in this episode for you: 9:55 - An opening passage by Richard Wagamese 11:40 - Be inspired by learning about these courageous leaders and the change they are making in their communities 19:35 - A better understanding of what is needed to create real change in Indigenous communities and the role of leadership in that transformation 27:08 - A way to reframe the concept of governance in a way that decreases conflict and division 29:15 - How intergenerational trauma interferes with the ability to deal with conflict and why social media is contributing to divisiveness 35:30 - How non-Indigenous people can support healing and understanding by doing their homework 39:40 - Why Canada is one of the most racist countries in the world and a call to action to change our systems 48:15 - Some tangible and actionable definitions of what reconciliation means and what it does not mean 1:03:45 - Hope for the future and the new leaders that are bringing reconciliation to life Poem: Excerpt from Embers, by Richard Wagamese: Unity cannot exist when exclusion is allowed to occur. I was graced with this teaching years ago, when I was working as a traditional elder's helper. The teaching was given in the context of the sacred pipe, but its intention was to help me understand community. What brings us together cannot exist in the same time and place as what keeps us apart. You. Me. Everyone. My choice is to be aware of our similarities: our yearning for truth, peace, love, belonging, welcome, grace, mercy, a god of our own understanding and at least one moment of real contact at the heart of every day. Seeing that, I am made more, included, extended and in harmony…until that moment when I no longer see. Who's in circle with us: Qwastånayå (L. We have dedicated a whole show to a subject that will affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide: flexible working hours and "work from home". While staff in many Asian countries have been back to the office for a while now, companies in the United States and Canada are now rolling out announcements for an imminent return to the office. The problem? Not everyone wants to go back. Aside from the pandemic, Ewan looks at some of the demographic changes that are giving the WFH movement an extra push, and shares his ideas on how employers and employees can prepare. Then Cam gets specific -- with Apple. The company's CEO Tim Cook told staff last week they can return to the office on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each week, while granting remote work on Wednesdays and Fridays -- a step widely seen as very accommodating for a company with an old school outlook when it comes to work. But that change wasn't good enough for thousands of employees who penned a lengthy letter taking the company to task for not doing more. We look at this issue from every possible angle and hopefully stumble on some solutions. In Check This Out, Ewan recommends an editorial on a horrific mass grave found in Canada, while Cam has bookmarked a New Yorker piece on the strange radio waves targeting US officials worldwide. ***The subject matter and content of this episode may not be suitable for all listeners*** "We did hear of children's bones being found in the foundations of buildings when (Residential) schools were dismantled. We heard of children being thrown into furnaces. These were children. The little ones who have woken up in Kamloops this week, these are children calling out to all of us now." Marie Wilson, former Commissioner on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated crimes and abuses against Indigenous children at Residential Schools in Canada, joins the Ahkameyimok Podcast from Yellowknife to discuss the shocking find of a mass grave of 215 children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. The grave was found on the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School at the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in British Columbia. Dr Wilson discusses her feelings on hearing of the the Kamloops mass grave, her memories of visiting that site as Commissioner, why her work on the TRC from 2009 to 2015 means she is shocked but not surprised by this mass grave and believes there are many more like it across Canada that need to be investigated, and why she believes the Pope and Catholic church, which ran the majority of the Residential Schools, needs to apologize for its role in what the TRC described as cultural genocide. Welcome back to Gaining Mom-entum! *Trigger Warning* Meghan & Abi spend this week's intro discussing the recent discovery made by the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation of the remains of 215 Indigenous children at the former Kamloops Residential School. They discuss the way the country continues to let down our Indigenous communities as well as some actionable steps that non-Indigenous people can take to show solidarity with the Indigenous communities across the land.  They then segue from talking about systemic racism to, well, talking about more systemic racism. Their guest for this week's discussion is Grace, a friend of Abi's, who was generous in sharing her time and personal experiences with anti-Asian hate as a Filipino-Canadian woman and the mother of a child who is Filipino, Chinese, and of course, Canadian. She begins by sharing what it was like for her growing up surrounded by people who did not look like her and how her mother's experience as an immigrant led to internalizing the goal of assimilation. Grace talks about the discipline of diversifying her world and seeking out professionals who operate through a decolonizing lens. Grace shares with Abi & Meghan how she is seeking safety for herself and her son, particularly over this past year with the unprecedented increase in anti-Asian attacks.
