What's common across the Boeing 737 MAX debacle, the 1MDB financial scandal and America's opioid crisis? They are all illustrations of how business leaders, in pursuit of performance, neglected and undermined progress – specifically fairness, well-being and sustainability. With each such scandal, trust in business frays. While one may blame specific firms and leaders, too much is amiss in modern business to solely blame the actors, says INSEAD Professor of Strategy and Management Subi Rangan in this podcast. Business theory and business education also warrant careful scrutiny and correction.
Badan Pengelola Investasi (BPI) Daya Anagata Nusantara (Danantara) masih asyik dibincangkan. Sementara, 1MDB terjerat skandal finansial hingga menyeret skandal politis eks PM Malaysia Najib Razak.Lantas, bagaimana proyeksi masa depan Danantara? Bakal untung atau buntung? Bagaimana memastikan pengawasan ketat dana investasi yang dikelola Danantara?Kita bincangkan bersama Ekonom Senior FEB UI, Telisa Falianty dan Ekonom Bright Institute, Awalil Rizky.

1MDB is undeniably the largest financial scandal in Malaysia's history. Malaysian journalist Leslie Lopez has released his first book, The Siege Within, which reveals previously unpublished material from his own archives related to the embezzlement of 1MDB funds. The book explores the roles of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and fugitive financier Jho Low in this political crime. We speak with Leslie about his journey in covering this story.

The 1Malaysia Development Berhard scandal (1MDB Scandal) is known as one of the world's most prolific financial scandals. With billions lost as a consequence of fraudulent activity by a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB, the scandal saw a huge backlash from Malaysian citizens, the media, and civil society organisations alike. In this episode, P. Gunasegaram, an Independent Journalist and author of 1MDB: The Scandal That Brought Down A Government, joins the host, Max Levites (Senior Governance Specialist, International Republican Institute), to discuss the history and context of the scandal itself and the motivations for and nature of the collective action response. Gunasegaram discusses the driving force behind the collective action movement, more notably the importance of the media and news outlets, derived from his own personal experience and involvement. He highlights the significance of cohesive and coordinated action by the media, civil society, and international actors working together to bring corrupt government officials to account and recover stolen assets. Gunasegaram finally outlines the key lessons and success factors to take away from this complex and multi-faceted case and its subsequent collective action response.

In this inaugural episode of "Seize & Desist" host Aidan Larkin (Co-Founder & CEO of Asset Reality) presents a compelling perspective on the challenges and significance of asset recovery. This field might fly under the radar of mainstream discussions, yet it has an enormous impact on societal funding for essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. With less than 1% of the estimated trillions in illicit financial flows being recovered around the world, there is a pressing need to examine why such a crucial sector is failing and what can be done to enhance its effectiveness.Asset Recovery is not just about arresting criminals and publishing sensational headlines, it is the intricate process of returning stolen wealth to victims and the public purse. Aidan Larkin skillfully deconstructs the complexities of the industry, stressing the alarming fact that crime does pay — and pays well for criminals, due to the vast amounts of unrecovered assets. The episode delves into potential reasons behind the inefficient recovery rates, from a lack of understanding and the fear of appearing ignorant to an overemphasis on the initial seizure rather than the subsequent economic restitution.Timestamps01:00 | The global asset recovery sector is failing03:00 | Less than 1% of global illicit financial flows are recovered05:00 | Asset recovery affects victims and communities09:00 | Asset recovery in the context of digital and crypto assets11:00 | Aidan Larkin's background and unique perspective on asset recovery13:00 | FATF's new focus on asset recoveryAbout The Host/Guest:Aidan Larkin is a prominent figure in the global asset recovery sector, boasting over 16 years of experience in the field. Working with former Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia, Low orchestrated a scheme to exploit 1MDB, a sovereign wealth fund established in 2009 with the noble purpose of benefiting the people of Malaysia. In 2015, the intrepid journalist Clare Rewcastle-Brown receives leaked financial documents, setting off a global investigation that uncovers a staggering amount of money being funneled into international bank accounts to fuel Low's extravagant lifestyle.
Dear Future Robots, Will the evolution of inorganic sentience require algorithmic code? ** When anger joins the conversation , logic leaves the room. ** My Today-People, I'm Back! Appreciate you all being patient with the process. In today's entry into the time-capsule, I discuss scammers in detail...those that scam for money, power & respect. Forgive me on the sound quality during the main segment, there was a noise cancelling program glitch (Somebody take the editing off my hands please lol). More Specifically, I talk about Eddie Tipton; Iowa's convicted lottery thief, the Writer's Guild Strike in Hollywood, the 1MDB scandal & Pras, Elon Musk's appearance on Bill Maher, The Woman King, President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, the false concept of Race, and much more. Guess I made up for some lost time. Enjoy, Share ideas! Ps: Extra Details Carter G. Woodson's research on the fact that around 12,000 free Black people owned slaves in the United States was based on his analysis of historical census data and other primary sources from the antebellum period. Specifically, Woodson referenced the United States census of 1830, which was the first census to include information on the number of free Black people who owned slaves. According to Woodson, the census data showed that around 12,000 free Black people owned slaves at the time, which represented approximately 10% of the free Black population in the United States. Woodson's research on this topic also drew on other primary sources, including historical accounts and legal records from the antebellum period that documented the experiences of free Black people and their interactions with the institution of slavery. It is worth noting that Woodson's analysis of the historical record and his interpretation of the significance of the fact that some free Black people owned slaves has been subject to debate and critique by scholars over time. However, his research and analysis on this topic were based on historical data and primary sources available to him at the time of his writing. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dear-future-robots/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dear-future-robots/support
