Viewed at one level, Paul's 1980's career was bookended by the album triumphs of Tug of War and Flowers In The Dirt. But that would be to overlook the January 1980 Tokyo drug bust, the dissolution of Wings, John's murder, and then a period that may best be described as uneven: duets (of varying quality), … 293: Macca's 80s Read More »

August 1989.The final year of ‘the finest pop decade ever'™️ is moving along quite nicely thank you very much. There's most definitely a change in the air, and we don't mean the launch of the FOUR channel Sky TV network. Relax everyone, UK Gold and TOTP reruns are coming in three years! No, real change was coming. The second summer of love in 1988 (sorry Danny Wilson, probably a year out) as witnessed on the utterly imperial NOW 11, 12 and 13 had demonstrated that the 90s were calling and they would be decked out in dayglo. And most importantly a new positivity was being felt in the air, across the airwaves and through the pop we were all immersed in.And let's not beat about the bush, folks, 1989 was a seismic year for music. Let me indulge you listeners:Disintegration, Three Feet High and Rising, Doolittle, Technique, Club Classics Volume One, Raw Like Sushi, The Stone Roses, , Like A Prayer, Hats, The Seeds of Love, Flowers In The Dirt, Paul's Boutique, The Raw And The Cooked…And of course Neither Fish Nor Flesh (A Soundtrack of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction). And so, to our favourite compiler of variously compiled pop. 1989 saw four (yes, as many as that!) new NOW, That's What I Call Music albums. Why four, I hear you cry? Well, because the summer was adorned with the first new dance volume since 1986, an album that, NOW fans will know, featured Love Can't Turn Around by Farley Jackmaster Funk - the first House track to break the UK. And 1989 was time (not for the guru, that's 1990 of course) to celebrate how dance was back, Back, BACK!And this additionally delicious dance volume enabled the BIG summer fifteenth volume to go deeper into the year's genres. So step forward delights including Soul II Soul's era defining classic, Paul McCartney's Hofner bass-adorned celebration of TV dinners, Swing Out Sister's mind-bending, sumptuous sixties throwback and De La Soul's daisy-age makeover of Hall and Oates (the ultimate backward nod to the outgoing 80s?).What a time to be on the edge of seventeen (deliberate Stevie Nicks nod, there) as this listener was!And joining me for this sepia-tinged and frankly tear-stained 1989 nostalgia fest through NOW 15 is the music journalist and author of the 33 1/3 book on George Michael's Faith, Matthew Horton.Discover how homemade mixtapes (his mums AND his own) inspired many a house party and achieved (almost) legendary status. Which cassettes were stuck in his Walkman at the outdoor Lido pool, why goth stars and American soap operas need to come together, which rapper performed for Matthew (and others, obviously) at Bristol University and (YES!) why the love for Fish and Flesh will never go away. And amongst these glittering 1989 delights, experience the moments when I actually say positive things (almost) about our friends from the north The Beautiful South and Hue and Cry.Join us on the glorious beach (best cover ever™️ - Jude Rogers) as we head back to NOW15. I think it's going to be alright. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"Flowers In The Dirt" runder snart sit 35-års jubilæum.

"Elsker The Beatles" er virkelig stolt over nærværende episode.

We are very happy to have Chip Madinger & Mark Easter back again this year for another deep dive for a Year In Review show. Chip and Mark published the epic Eight Arms To Hold You book in 2000. It is the must own book for fans of the Beatles Solo music. See link below to purchase the 2018 revision on Chip's site. This time we chose 1989. A very productive and busy year for Paul that centered around the release of Flowers In The Dirt. Was it a "comeback"? or just another record? A lot of people like to crap on Flowers these days but we still think it holds up although as you see our guests and hosts don't like every track! Our discussion also focuses on the heavy promotion Paul did at the time. We included 3 segments from various appearances throughout the year and Chip and Mark tell us in detail about the shows they saw on the World Tour that began in September of 1989. These guys are truly the benchmark for this stuff and we are happy to present another episode for you. The history books will note 1989 as a big year for Paul and we agree. Let us know your memories of this period and if you saw any of the concerts! Thanks Chip and Mark! Chip's Site for the book (and his other book "Lennonology")

This episode is actually devoted to an entire Paul McCartney album, 1989's "Flowers in the Dirt," that we think deserves more love than it gets. This was the beginning of everything Paul is currently doing to this day, from a major world tour to including a number of Beatles songs in his set. (Also, WE SAW HIM IN CONCERT ON THIS TOUR.) This album saw Paul collaborating with songwriter Elvis Costello and various producers of the time, one of whom will be very familiar to regular listeners of this podcast. This is one of the less popular albums in Paul's discography, at least to some of those OTHER people, but we unabashedly love it. We also love "Back to the Future" and have a great time revisiting it. We even give a special nod to composer Alan Silvestri for his amazing score, and expose the truth about DeLorean cars. Be sure to stay tuned to the very end (don't be fooled by the fake-out ending!) to hear more about the Catherine wheel, otherwise known as the 'breaking wheel', the medieval torture device Blaine mentioned in our previous episode. Hey Gang, We're back with a brand new episode. This week we went back to the Documentary/Film/Concert review series that we've done in the past. (Red Square, Broad Street, Space Within Us) but this time we opted to view and discuss the 1989 Doc Put It There. The film chronicles Paul's then newly assembled band of Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), Robbie McIntosh (Pretenders), Paul "Wix" Wickens, and Chris Witten (Dire Straits) and of course Linda preparing for the upcoming World Tour that took place between September 1989 to July 1990. Paul mostly discusses about rehearsing the band with the new material from Flowers In The Dirt. Paul also occasionally dives into the tracks on the album. The documentary was directed by longtime McCartney film collaborator Geoff Wonfor and Paul was interviewed by Tracy McLeod. One of the better documentaries in Paul's career we both felt. You? Be Well, Tom & Andy

"How many days will the wet weather last"?   It's 1987. Paul McCartney's 80s "cloudy" slump reaches its peak. Broad Street/Live Aid/Press To Play/Sessions with Phil Ramone/Return To Pepperland all have yielded well below par for our kid. A new manager, Richard Ogden jumpstarts Macca with the All The Best! campaign. He then suggests a songwriting collaboration with Mr. Declan McManus (Elvis Costello) to provide a much needed shot in the arm of creativity ultimately resulting in the critically acclaimed June 1989 release of Flowers In The Dirt. This week on 2Legs we examine the relationship and the results of this collaboration with Mr. Tony Traguardo (Fab4Free4All). British composer and electronic producer Circles And Ellipses releases “Burn:Cycle Reworks” via Here & Now Recordings; a follow-up EP to the original soundtrack of the 1994 video game Burn:Cycle, the first ever video game soundtrack to feature orchestral music, consisting of four reimagined electronic compositions. Originally composed and produced by both Chris Whitten and BAFTA-nominated British film score composer, conductor, producer and musician Simon Boswell in the early ‘90s for the adventure video-game title published by Philips Interactive Media, Chris Whitten now returns as Circles And Ellipses to share reworks of this classic game soundtrack. Whitten’s musical journey has been a vast and impressive one so far, from producing classic ‘80s hit-singles such as "What I Am"by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians (which currently boasts 10 million views on YouTube alone), to providing drums for "The Whole of the Moon"by The Waterboys and the legendary Sir Paul McCartney’s 1989 album“Flowers In The Dirt”and joining iconic British rock band Dire Straits on their final world tour from 1991-1992 and once again during their 2017 reunion tour. Chris Whitten is also widely recognised for composing original scores for top media companies, including BBC and Discovery Channel. Circles And Ellipses has just done a Mix for NTS Radio’s Tim Noakes’ ‘Synth Hero Show’ whose previous guests include film composer Clint Mansell, dance duo Orbital, Stranger Things composer Kyle Dixon, and Paul White from R&S Records. Noakes has described Whitten as“cult drum God”. Chris Whitten was born in Wimbledon, just outside London and now lives in the west of England, near Bath and Glastonbury. With a burning desire to pursue a musical career, Whitten left home at the early age of just 16 to study jazz and classical composition at The City Of Leeds College Of Music, although his musical diploma would be cut short in 1979 after picking up more local gigs and eventually embarking on a tour with seminal British jazz-fusion guitarist Gary Boyle. In the early 1980s, producer and guitarist Simon Boswell invited Whitten to perform drums on an album session in Rome. On returning to London, Whitten would contribute to many various styled projects and bands including punk/ funk band Out fronted by local fashion icon and journalist Alix Sharkey, repeated RCA Studio Sessions in Rome, and working as drummer and arranger on several hit albums for celebrated Italian musicians such as Francesco De Gregori, Gianni Morandiand Riccardo Cocciante, collaborating on Cocciante’s 10th studio album with orchestral arranger Paul Buckmaster(Elton John, Miles Davis). Former bandmate Karl Wallinger had since joined Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys, and in 1984, Whitten would take up drum duties.Chris Whitten performed drums on the hit single “The Whole Of The Moon”, which is still regarded as The Waterboys’“finest hour and signature recording”. Whitten then gained a shining reputation as a prolific freelance studio drummer for artists such as Swing Out Sister and Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders). Co-producer of the original “Burn:Cycle Soundtrack”Simon Boswell currently holds more than 90 credits in film and TV composition, including acclaimed classics such as Phenomena(1985), Santa Sangre(1989), A Midsummer Night’s Dream(1999)and many more. Boswell's record productions from the 1980’s have influenced many other contemporary musicians, notably "Block Rockin' Beats"by UK electronic act The Chemical Brothers. Whitten sees himself as a drummer with a passion for synthesizers. Although he loves the synth sounds of 90’s techno and electronica, Whitten also takes influences from more classic sounds such as the work of Herbie Hancock, Jan Garbarek and Eberhard Weber. As for his electronica inspirations, Whitten has drawn influence from the likes of minimal techno artist Speedy J, early Detroit techno from 69(Carl Craig) and Kenny Larkin, as well UK’s Kirk DeGiorgio and contemporary electronic producer Lone. Whitten’s work as Circles And Ellipses for the “Burn:Cycle Reworks” EP can best be compared to minimal techno maestros such as Stephan Bodzin and Max Cooper.

From the Beatlesesque pop of "My Brave Face" to the golden-era Hollywood glamour of "Distractions," or the paternal whimsy of "Put It There," Paul is in strong writing and performing form. Also, enter Elvis Costello, his acerbic wit balancing and enhancing McCartney's creative yet cloying compositions from the 1980s. Was Elvis Paul's finest collaborator since John Lennon? Is this Paul's best album of the 1980s? Is there more buried beneath the flowers in the dirt? You'll find out all this and more in this swan ... this one.If you heard our message at the start of this episode, you can use the coupon TAKEITAWAY when you sign up to Pippa.
