Cyclists and pedestrians take over Latah near the railroad crossing. (Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )Right around noon on a bluebird September Sunday in Boise, a pack of cyclists dozens strong turned south onto Latah Street, a chorus of bike bells sounding. A large group of cyclists cruises south on Latah around noon on Sunday, Sept 22, when Boise held its first Open Streets event.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )They cruised past a barricade, where police and volunteers were turning motorists away. Several hundred yards in, the Boise Good Times Street Band welcomed riders with a jaunty rendition of Give My Regards to Broadway. Wide, business-lined Latah is soon packed with bikers, walkers, roller skaters and at least one person on stilts.Food trucks and other stands line the one-mile segment of the street, and long lines stretch out of the cafes and restaurants on the route. Long lines stretched out of the cafes and restaurants on Latah during the event.(Murphy Woodhouse)Lindsey Lind and her family – husband Eric, their two young children, and two dogs – had walked from their nearby home. They're standing in line for some birria tacos.“It's kind of weird,” she said, standing in the middle of the road. “Like, I feel like I keep needing to move over to the side.”Eric described Latah on a normal day.“It's busy, and usually people aren't doing 30 miles an hour,” he said. “It's, you know, 35, 40.”“Or more,” Lindsey interjected. They loved the vibrant sense of community surrounding them, and the promotion of green alternatives to driving.“I think it helps people slow down a little bit and see kind of what's out here as far as businesses and, you know, it kind of puts maybe some of these businesses on the map,” Eric said. Austin Clark, owner of Primal Coffee on Latah, plays fiddle with his friend Matt Hopper's band The Roman Candles in front of his cafe during the Open Streets event. "I think I knew it would be a good coordinated event, so I was happy to be a part of it and see where it goes," he said.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )“I think it's really awesome for Latah's business, this kind of exposure,” said Austin Clark, owner of Primal Coffee, located on the street. “Maybe a lot of people don't come up onto Latah ever, you know, because there's no reason to. But now they've got a reason to come.”Sending a messageThese are exactly the sorts of sentiments organizers of Boise's first Open Streets event were hoping to inspire.“All the chips fell into place. It worked out really well. And here we are today with close to, I would say like 3000 people,” said Nina Pienaar, advocacy director at the Boise Bicycle Project (BBP). Several days after the event, organizers later provided an updated figure of over 6,000. Bike racks were packed tight on Latah Street during the event.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )BBP worked closely with Ada County, Boise, and other local officials to develop location criteria, then surveyed neighborhoods to find a spot with local buy-in. They ultimately landed on Latah.Pienaar said the strong turnout “sends the message loud and clear that like, ‘Hey, the Boise community, we're out biking, we're out walking. We want to see more infrastructure. We want to be able to choose to bike and to walk rather than choosing to get into our vehicles.'”The second Open Streets event is already planned for next year, according to an official with the City of Boise, which sponsored the event. But with thousands in the street for the first event, Pienaar said there's huge potential for a more regular schedule, perhaps even biweekly during the summer, adding: “The more the better.”Social animals“The concept is really, really simple. You open streets to people and you close them to cars. And the magic happens,” said Gil Penalosa. “You get young and old and rich and poor and fat and skinny, and you get everybody.”Penalosa is an urban planner who now lives in Toronto, where he was the runner-up in the 2022 mayoral election. But as an official in the Colombian capital of Bogotá in the late 1990s, he helped dramatically expand the city's weekly ciclovía program, credited as the seed of the global Open Streets movement. Every Sunday some 1.5 million Bogotanos cruise around 80 miles of car-free roads.“Why is it spreading?” he asked. “I think because humans are social animals, and we want to be with other people.”A winged stilt walker makes their way down Latah. (Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )The many benefits of Open Streets are best achieved with frequent repetition, especially the health benefits, Penalosa argued. But in a time of often ugly divisiveness, he said anything that brings a diverse swath of a community together is good.“The possibility of people meeting as equals is really, really, really important,” he said.He acknowledges that some officials and businesses can blanch at shutting down significant stretches of roadways to cars, but encourages cities that haven't tried it to be gutsy.“I've seen it [be] successful … in cities of 50,000 people or 500,000 or 5 million, 20 million. It works everywhere,” Penalosa said. “I've seen it in poor cities, in wealthy cities, and it makes everybody happier and healthier. And also to keep in mind that this is low-risk, this is low-cost and has very high benefits.”Terra Reed, an organizer of the Albuquerque Open Streets event Ciclovía – now in its 10th year – similarly encouraged other cities to give it a go, saying that it doesn't have to be huge to be a success. From their experience, she said “having strong ties” with local governments is especially important to start and maintain such efforts.“Try to build those relationships early,” she advised.Just keep pedalingIn a parking lot off Latah, young kids are buzzing around a bicycle skills course. 6-and-a-half-year-old Margot Mace makes her way around a bicycle skills course.(Murphy Woodhouse / Boise State Public Radio )Margot Mace, who's 6-and-a-half years old, is getting frustrated trying to ride her bike over a teeter-totter obstacle.“You can do it, keep pedaling,” her mom, Beth Edwards, encouraged.“It doesn't let me do it,” Margot shouted in frustration after another failed attempt.Beth said they had ridden to Latah with dozens of others – and got a taste of the danger cyclists face in the city.“We were trying to get across Orchard (Street) and a car almost ran us down,” she recounted. “We were a big group of bikers, so we weren't just one cycling family or one person. There was 40 of us and a car still almost ran us down.”Edwards had heard of Open Streets, but didn't really know much about the idea until that Sunday. She loved its emphasis on safety for all road users.“We are just kinda constantly living with that ‘Llook out! Look out!'” she said. “Coming here and being free and seeing her just riding safely and freely is a pretty awesome feeling.”After three failed attempts, Margot backed up to give it one more go. She rolled up and over to the applause of spectators.“I just love how she never gives up,” Beth said. “That's all it takes.”This story was produced by the Mountain West News Bureau, a collaboration between Wyoming Public Media, Nevada Public Radio, Boise State Public Radio in Idaho, KUNR in Nevada, KUNC in Colorado and KANW in New Mexico, with support from affiliate stations across the region. It will come as no surprise to regular listeners of this podcast that we are all big fans of Steve Perry, the chief vocalist of Journey. So it should also not come as a surprise that we would want to feature his debut solo studio album called Street Talk. Perry embarked on this solo project shortly after the release of Journey's "Frontiers" album, at a time when the group was packing arenas around the world. The name of the album comes from his pre-Journey days when he was leading a band called Alien Project - but he had at one time considered naming it, "Street Talk." Perry also used Craig Krampf as drummer, who was also a previous member of Alien Project. The album obviously has similarities to Journey due to Perry's vocals, but it is significantly softer than the more pop rock/hard rock approach typical of Journey. The songs are written or co-written by Perry, and showcase Perry's voice in a more ballad-heavy manner. The lead single, “Oh Sherrie,” was written about his relationship with Perry's then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. We covered “Oh Sherrie” on episode #148, but there are three other singles that broke into the top 40, powering the album to number 12 on the Billboard 200 album charts and to 2x Platinum in sales.Perry had worked outside of Journey during his tenure with the band, including vocal work with both Sammy Hagar and Kenny Loggins. Other members of the band were also working on side projects, so it was expected that all would return to the group after their separate projects. Perry followed suit, this, but troubles began to surface with personnel changes and Perry's mother's failing health causing the "Raised on Radio" Journey album to be delayed.Street Talk gives us a good look at Steve Perry outside of the rest of the Journey band members, during a time when Perry was at the top of his vocal game.Rob brings us this excellent album for today's podcast. She's MineThe track that starts side two is a slow rocker that demonstrates Perry's versatility in musical styles. The lyrics describe a struggle between a guy and his rival over a girl. It made it to number 21 on the US charts - and you can't go wrong with a sax. Captured By the MomentThis song is deeper lyrically, with Perry looking at significant times in history and music as snapshots in a frame. He pays tribute to some key figures from the 60s and 70s including Martin Luther King Jr, Jackie Kennedy, the Beatles, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and others. It has a distinctive 80's keyboard sound. Foolish HeartA subdued piece, this track is the second-biggest hit from the album after "Oh, Sherrie." The lyrics depict a guy longing for love, but who does not trust his heart to make good choices. It was co-written with Randy Goodrum, who wrote "You Needed Me" for Anne Murray. It was the last single released from the album. Strung OutThis faster paced track closes out the album, and discusses love from the perspective of a guy longing for a woman in a relationship with another. "I feel like Bogart in a crazy movie. Bogie and me, we never beg - but this time maybe I've got voices in my head." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Who's the Boss?”Tony Danza plays a former baseball athlete trying to raise his daughter while working as a live-in housekeeper for a single advertising executive. Alyssa Milano played Danza's daughter. STAFF PICKS:I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister Wayne kicks off the staff picks with glam rock sensation Twisted Sister in their follow-up to "We're Not Gonna Take It." Many listeners may be more familiar with a cover of this song performed by SpongeBob SquarePants in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" entitled "Goofy Goober Rock."For Whom the Bell Tolls by MetallicaLynch brings us a signature song from Metallica's 1984 album, "Ride the Lightning." The heavy riffs typical of Metallica are accented by the toll of chimes, and the lyrics are inspired by Ernest Hemmingway's novel of the same name dealing with war, death, and fate set in the Spanish Civil War.Hard Habit to Break by Chicago Bruce takes the tempo way down with a hit off Chicago 17. Vocal duties are carried by Bill Champlin and Peter Cetera, and the song is arranged by David Foster. The lyrics depict a man struggling to get over a long lost love whom he took for granted. Chicago 17 is Chicago's best selling album, and their last with Peter Cetera in the group. No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney Rob closes out the staff picks with a single from the soundtrack to McCartney's film, "Give My Regards to Broad Street." McCartney brings in Pink Floyd alumnus David Gilmour for guitar work on this song. Gilmour requested that his session fee be donated to a charity of Paul's choice. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Zoolookologie by Jean Michel JarreWe close out on a jazz fusion number from the time which uses samples of voice and spoken words to form an art rock sonic landscape. MIke's audio starts out trash for 3 minutes, then all systems are normal. Have no fear! Cinema 9 did a movie called The Island last week. Everybody was pissed. Louis Gossett Jr. bit the big one recently, but apparently there will be no Iron Eagle series marathon going down. Govier's mom's boyfriend from 1988 had an ancient sundial in his yard plus he wanted to be a swashbuckling pirate like Errol Flynn. You guys go Joe Lowry or Joe Yori? Which movies do you own outright in your Amazon video library? Govier has 12 or so in his library as the guys review Mike's library. Did Govier overdraft his bank account to purchase the 1993 rollerblading classic Airborne. Tom Green is in town just in time for opening day in Detroit while Tim Robinson is also doing a live show the same day. Get ready for some John Tesh Roundball Rock! Carrot Top is apparently tailor made for Eyes Wide Shut parties. Govier provides a quick appraisal of the hotels of downtown Detroit. One story didn't go too well for him. What's the better show: Detroiters or I Think You Should Leave? We got your emails! Travis from Cinema 9 & 93-94 A Music Pod kicks it off. Travis was there in the 90's, but he wants to know what type of animal all the guys would like to be if they could. Plus it's time for another round of name that random guy from Hartland High School in 1997 who had a pointless nickname like Horse. Get ready for Uncle Luke & some Doo Doo Brown coming your way! YouTube etiquette when it comes to liking or subbing videos is a thing. Luke has a problem with Sand Cranes. The adventures of Finn Gurrer continue! Where will Finn take us this week? That's what you're about to find out. Kirk Cousins or Finn's cousins? Steve has your upcoming 2024 solar eclipse report for those of you in the United States who want to catch a glimpse of this unique event. Steve is our astronomer of record. If he doesn't know, ask Google. Mike reminisces about the 1994 eclipse that his science class went outside to see in May of 1994. Steve also has thoughts on the new True Detective, including the music choices. Of course we couldn't end the show without sneaking in more Israeli/Palestinian murderous chaos. 7 members from chef Jose Andres charity called World Central Kitchen were targeted with drone strikes by the IDF & Jose Andres is furious about it. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with I'll Bear by Car Colors. Oklahoma was never like this...it's summer of 1986 and a new Paul McCartney album is on sale worldwide! Press to Play - Paul's 5th solo studio album in nearly as many years - represented a man on a mission to capture the sounds of the day, forge a new songwriting partnership, and undo the negative attention his Give My Regards to Broadstreet project attracted from all the bitter critics seeking to take a former fab down a peg. Begun mere days in the aftermath of Broadstreet, this project was also one of Macca's longest-gestating studio efforts - and while the music itself exudes trademark McCartney optimism, a darkness also lay on the brim with songs that seemed - at least at the time - bitter and resentful of his critics. But the sunny "Press", released as a single in mid-July, jauntily trotted to decent position in the charts - and while the record would fall short of Paul's "comeback" aspirations, it did point the way to projects, and collaborations, to come... It's the fall of 1985 and new music from the three remaining former Beatles abounds! First up, in their first joint concert appearance together since the Concert for Bangladesh over a decade prior, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are once again singing together on stage -- this time in support of rockabilly legend and founding rock and roll pioneer Carl Perkins. In a new special titled Carl Perkins & Friends, the two fabs are on hand alongside other legendary talents such as Eric Clapton, Dave Edmonds and more, to pay homage to the man who inspired an entire generation. Meanwhile, on the original music front, Paul McCartney's latest single release, a film soundtrack theme titled Spies Like Us, marks Macca's first new release since the disastrous Give My Regards to Broadstreet film the previous year. And a certified hit was most certainly welcome news to Macca's weary ears... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
As summer turned to fall in 1985, the aftermath of the LIVE AID benefit concert continued to ring in the ears of the collective musical consciousness. Paul McCartney's appearance in the show, albeit minus the rumored involvement of George and Ringo, was a welcome revitalization of Macca's profile following the disastrous reception of his Give My Regards to Broadstreet film. The aforementioned George and Ringo were also no slouches at this time, with Ringo Starr lending his voice to a new era of fan - the toddler set - via his narration of the popular Thomas the Tank Engine books. George Harrison's appearance at the European Grand Prix in October was yet another step on the road back ot public life, which would kick up a notch in the weeks to come... Hosted on Acast. Talking about the end of historic run, and thoughts on Broadway. Email: Podcast@mannglenn.com
It's the grand finale of 1984 - a year in Beatles history full of big swings, big misses, and new beginnings for the remaining three former Beatles. Despite the musical successes of Paul's latest project, the US flop of McCartney's Give My Regards to Broadstreet film left a bitter taste in the mouth of its creator - blaming frustrated screenwriters-turned critics for its failures. The Maccas put on a happy face for the UK premiere, palling around with co-stars Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach...as well as Olivia Harrison who attended the function in her husband's stead. George was in New Zealand at the time promoting Dereck Taylor's memoir and, when asked about the film, had nice things to say. But George did more than talk - taking the stage for the first time in years to jam with Deep Purple in Sydney Australia...perhaps signaling a contemplation of a return to music after several years adrift... At last, after years of preparation, planning and hard work, Paul McCartney's Give My Regards to Broadstreet has arrived! First up in the release schedule is the soundtrack album, featuring new Macca tracks (including the successful No More Lonely Nights single) as well as incidental music and re-recorded Beatles tracks featured in the film. As expected, the LP performed well, hitting the coveted #1 spot in the UK and going top25 in the US market. Paul's victory lap would be cut-short by the disastrous critical reception of the film itself, which McCartney tried to downplay as elitist reviewers anxious to use their freshly sharpened knives on the beloved former Beatle... This week we go to the theatre, literally - as Jack takes a pilgrimage to the now defunct Broad Street tube station, honouring Paul McCartney's oft-forgotten but still much maligned venture into Hollywood as a solo artist, Give My Regards to Broad Street. We discuss the film, its soundtrack album and how a project that sees Paul reunite with some of his best collaborators (Ringo Starr, Linda McCartney, George Martin) can go so wrong. Cameron also teaches us how to speak like Stephen Hawking and we discuss the resurgence of 1980s fashion in 2023. Jess then takes lead for a piano ballad rendition of No More Lonely Nights. So far 1984 has seen the release of two new Lennon projects, starting with the posthumous Milk & Honey LP and continuing on with the Every Man Has A Woman single & compilation album. But in October another new Lennon release arrived in the form of Julian Lennon's debut solo LP Valotte. This slickly-produced and catchy collection of songs from John's first born son was an instant success, with its title track performing well in the singles charts and the touching Too Late For Goodbyes resonating with Beatles fans and a new generation alike. Also in October the new single No More Lonely Nights bodes well for Paul McCartney's new feature film Give My Regards to Broadstreet - cracking the top 10 in both the US and UK, as well as charting successfully around the world. With a hit single going for it, and a well of goodwill on McCartney's side...what could go wrong? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We're taking a little mid-series break, but before we go, here's a bonus episode from last year, in which Al Roberts and Jonno for the superb comedy sketch group, Sheeps drop in to chat about Paul McCartney's 1984 film, Give My Regards to Broad Street. The film (and its accompanying video game) are amongst the most critically derided Paul McCartney works, but is it as bad as everyone says it is? Have a listen to find out.You can watch the film on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc1UnNmYP4M&t=6s Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jeremy is joined again by author and scriptwriter Simon Guerrier to investigate Paul McCartney's 1984 musical drama Give My Regards to Broad Street, also starring Bryan Brown, Tracey Ullman and Ralph Richardson. Their conversation covers such vital subjects as the Beatles filmography, Thomas the Funk Engine, dream-storming, alternative storylines and Blame It on Ringo.
Scott and Marty use a wide lens to capture a broad 'bent in three of Sir Jim's finest film outings.(NOTE: In 2002, Jim Broadbent actually declined a knighthood. But he'll always be “Sir” in our hearts!)
As the curtain rises on a new Broadway season, The Shubert Organization's Julio Peterson and CBRE's Mary Ann Tighe join Spencer Levy to discuss the Times Square theater district's central role in another New York City comeback.

Right away, she realizes that Andrew is just as obsessed with Broadway, and they discuss their approach to teaching the Broadway Musical. At Princeton, Stacy is a professor of theater and the director of the program in Music Theater, and she explains that one of her favorite questions to ask her students is their experience with going to Broadway. Stacy dissects all of the elements that are involved in putting together a Broadway musical. While opening up about the importance of community theater, Stacy reveals why theater is an art to be cherished in any community. Andrew even gets to talk about how important his summer theater camp, Mainstage was and how it allowed him to embrace his gay identity. And because Andrew couldn't help himself, he asks Stacy so many hard hitting musical theater questions. What does she really think of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals? Which musical does she always have playing in the background when she's writing? What it's like to teach a Stephen Sondheim course? Get out your tap shoes, ready your jazz hands, and step into the spotlight, because we're heading to Broadway with Tony Award winner Marissa Jaret Winokur (Hairspray) and twink icon Liam Riley (Meeting Liam). First though, the hosts talk about their awful producer**, the pod's big Cybersocket nomination, how terrible Ambulance was, Britney Spears' pregnancy, Al Pacino's cradle robbing, and the season seven cast of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars. Once Marissa and Liam hop on, it's all about musical theatre, CockyBoy moms, Celebrity Big Brother, Matthew Morrison, terrible scene partners, and The Talk. After a dramatic reading of the script to the NakedSword Originals film Get.Away., the hosts play a quick round of Blue Balls and close out the show with a call from Nick Adams (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) to dive into everything from The Other Two to Fire Island, Wicked, and Kelsey Grammer. **Producer's Note: Apologies for allegedly joking that the hosts are old and I am sorry for not knowing who Maggie Rogers is. The hosts spend usually spend their time referencing people like Karen Carpenter and I just assumed Maggie Rogers was a throwback artist like Karen. Oops! So yeah folks, this is the first time I have ever officially posted a "lost" episode of the show. Originally, this was part of the "Catch-Up" side series, where me and Kit O'Toole were going to cover Give My Regards to Broadstreet, both the film and the album. However, the audio quality of the episode meant the whole thing was sadly shelved. After finding the file in a hard drive transfer the RAW episode was posted as an exclusive Patreon bonus. Then, my generous patrons decided via poll that not only was it good enough to release, but that it was good enough to release as it was. This means you are about to hear the uncut, unedited conversation between me and The Queen. This is unlikely to be the official episode on Broadstreet, and I expect me and Kit will return to it as a topic in the future some time. Hopefully anyway. So yeah folks, please enjoy this unique, raw episode of Paul or Nothing that comes...FROM THE VAULTS! Peace & love. Hare Hare Krishna. Time Stamps: Intro - 00:00 - 06:04 Housekeeping - 06:05 - 15:26 "Give My Regards to Broadstreet", with Kit O'Toole - 15:27 - End! At long last, T.J. and Tony review Sir Paul's magnum opus: Give My Regards to Broad Street. Starring and written by Paul McCartney, the 1984 movie was panned by critics and audiences alike, but brought us some of Paul's best music of the decade ("No More Lonely Nights"), and some of his worst remakes of his best music from decades past (lookin' at you, "Long and Winding Road"). This long and rambling podcast leads to all the usual goofs and giggles, and—as far as we're able to ascertain—what we believe to be the first reference to the theme music from NBC's "The Days & Nights of Molly Dodd" in podcasting history. And what movie review is complete without also covering the Commodore 64 video game adaptation? Movie viewing recommended (you might be able to find it on YouTube), but certainly not required. Good times guaranteed either way, or your money back. EPISODE LINKS Enjoy this week's Pandora playlist How many Fabs do you give Broad Street? Holler at us on Facebook. Transcript for this show are below pic: Episode 11 features Tatum, an up and coming vocal artist and musical theater star from the Chicago suburbs. Tatum has stared in over 2 dozen performances in her life and was at risk of losing it all when she developed nodules on her vocal cords during High School. Listen to this episode to hear how she overcame this obstacle and if we are lucky we will be seeing her on the big screen in a few short years! Episode 11 - Nodes on Vocal Cords (1).wav Ron [00:00:16] Hello and welcome to PodcastDX the show that brings you interviews with people just like you whose lives were forever changed by a medical diagnosis. Lita [00:00:26] I'm Lita. Ron [00:00:27] And I'm Ron. Jean [00:00:28] And I'm Jean Marie. Jean [00:00:29] Collectively we are THE BORG. Lita [00:00:33] laughing, I'm sorry, what? Jean [00:00:33] According to Wikipedia the Borg is a fictional alien group that appears as reoccurring antagonist in the Star Trek franchise. THE BORG are a vast collection of drones or cybernetic organisms linked to a have mind called The Collective. Lita [00:00:49] Okay Jean collectively We're the hosts of podcast D X. Jean [00:00:55] Okay sure. Right right right. That's what I said. Ron [00:00:58] Anyways on today's show we're interviewing Tatum. Lita [00:01:01] That's right. Tatum is an up and coming vocal artist and musical theater star from the Chicago suburbs. She is currently studying musical theater at Ball State. Ron [00:01:12] Go Cardinals. Lita [00:01:13] Welcome to the show Tatum. Tatum [00:01:14] Thank you for having me. Lita [00:01:16] Tatum is an amazing singer. She's been in countless local musical productions. Thank you for coming in today. Tatum you must be exhausted. Tatum [00:01:24] I'm always ready for anything. Jean [00:01:27] Did I hear that you just had a reunion show last night at the Elmhurst high school. Tatum [00:01:31] Yes I did. It was called The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Jean [00:01:36] Oh that's a good one. Yeah. Tatum [00:01:37] Yeah. Lita [00:01:39] So you didn't even get to take a break when it's your summer off from school. Tatum [00:01:42] Oh no there's always a show somewhere. (laughter) Ron [00:01:46] All right let's get going here. Tatum I'm sure the listeners at home are wondering by now what today's topic will be. After all we have a healthy happy college student. However we know that not all illnesses are blatantly obvious. You can't really tell if someone's healthy just by looking at them. Is that what we're dealing with today. Lita [00:02:07] In a way you're right. Tatum has or I should say had, a condition that could have sidelined her singing career. Tatum [00:02:16] Yes I developed nodules on my vocal folds that made it almost impossible to talk let alone project my singing voice out across a packed theater. Lita [00:02:24] Now I've heard of vocal cords before. Are they the same as vocal folds. Tatum [00:02:30] Yes. According to John Hopkins the vocal cords also called the vocal folds are two bands of smooth muscle tissue found in the larynx which is also the voice box the larynx itself is in the neck at the top of the trachea which is also commonly known as the windpipe. When your vocal cords vibrate and air passes through the cords from the lungs that's what produces sound. The sound is then sent out through the throat nose and mouth giving the sound resonance on the sound of your individual voice is determined by the size and shape of your vocal cords your throat your nose and your mouth. Ron [00:03:05] TATUM How did you know that something was wrong. Did your throat hurt. Tatum [00:03:10] Yeah it did but it felt different. Then just like a sore throat from a cold or something like that I was noticing that my vocal endurance was very low I would lose my voice after like an hour of talking in like a loud group like out at a loud restaurant or something like that. Also during rehearsals for shows that I was in I noticed that I couldn't make it through a full rehearsal without feeling like I needed to go home and not talk. Lita [00:03:37] Oh well. Tatum [00:03:37] Yeah. Lita [00:03:38] Did you try any home remedies before you went to the doctor. Tatum [00:03:41] Yeah I did. Just like normal things you would do to try and get your voice back because at the time I didn't know that I had vocal nodule. So you know I would go home and drink a lot of water and have lozenges and just rest my voice for a while just like anyone else would do. But it was it was more than that. Jean [00:03:58] Sure. Sure How does one actually get nodules on their vocal cords. How did they form. Tatum [00:04:03] Well according to the Merck Manual acute trauma or chronic irritation causes changes in the vocal cords that can lead to polyps and nodules and granulomas all three conditions cause hoarseness and almost a breathy voice and diagnosis is based on a laryngoscopy. Jean [00:04:21] Oh. Lita [00:04:21] A laryngoscopy, what is a laryngoscopy? Tatum [00:04:28] A laryngoscopy which also just could be called getting scoped. Lita [00:04:31] Oh scoped. Tatum [00:04:31] Yeah, It's basically they stick a really tiny camera down your throat or when I got it it would go up my nose and then down the throat. Jean [00:04:42] nooo. Lita [00:04:42] laughter. Tatum [00:04:42] It's really uncomfortable but yeah it goes in and you can see on a screen your vocal folds. It's pretty cool actually actually again. So they do something called a strobe test which is basically just like really rapid pictures and you can see it like it almost like slow motion your vocal cords vibrating. Jean [00:05:02] Oh. wow Tatum [00:05:02] Because it's going so fast. Jean [00:05:05] mmhmm. Ron [00:05:05] interesting. Tatum [00:05:05] So that was really helpful for me when I went in and first got my diagnosis. I could see the bumps. Lita [00:05:11] So they let you watch this. Tatum [00:05:12] Yeah. Yeah. Jean [00:05:13] Oh see you were awake ohh. Lita [00:05:14] Laughter Tatum [00:05:14] I mean you're watching it. Well this thing is like down your throat. Jean [00:05:18] So that's amazing. Lita [00:05:20] oh wow. Ron [00:05:20] If you got to see it How did they treat the nodules then? Tatum [00:05:23] Judicious surgical removal restores the voice and removal of the irritating source prevents recurrence. So when I got it it was basically a laser that cut them off of my vocal folds in my particular case that irritation came from previous acid reflux problems. Lita [00:05:41] ohhhh. Tatum [00:05:42] And just improper overuse of my voice like over practicing and yelling and. Ron [00:05:47] So they were using a laser. Tatum [00:05:49] Yes. Jean [00:05:49] And were you awake for this. Tatum [00:05:50] No I was not awake for that. Jean: OK. Ron [00:05:52] And if the laser would have slipped. Would that have impacted your voice. Tatum [00:05:59] well Yes. Jean [00:05:59] I always wonder if, if the doctor sneezes or something. Lita [00:06:03] oh my. Jean [00:06:03] During the procedure. Any. Yes. Any procedure. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Tatum [00:06:07] laughter. Lita [00:06:07] That's it. I think that's why they don't want to robotics. Jean [00:06:10] It could be. Well again just thinking about all this makes my throat hurt. Tatum [00:06:13] But they used to do it with like scissors. Lita [00:06:16] Oh. Tatum [00:06:17] Like way way back in the day which was just way less accurate since the lasers just like it was like a 45 minute surgery. Yeah. Jean [00:06:25] Wow could you talk afterwards. Tatum [00:06:27] No not right afterwards. Lita [00:06:28] Were you nervous about having the surgery. Tatum [00:06:31] I was mostly because like I mean it was my voice like I'm majoring in musical theater. This is my instrument. And my surgeon he's like one of the most acclaimed vocal surgeons in the world. So Lita: OK I obviously trusted him. But you know I mean anyone's nervous going into surgery. Jean [00:06:50] I think I heard you were in good company maybe like Barbra Streisand may have seen your doctor. Tatum [00:06:56] Yeah yeah. she did. Lita [00:06:57] oh wow. All right. And what was the recovery from your surgery like. Did anything speed along your recovery. Tatum [00:07:04] I don't know if anything necessarily sped it up besides just being on vocal rest because immediately after I was completely silent for a week. Jean [00:07:14] Oh wow. Tatum [00:07:15] I didn't know anything yeah. Lita [00:07:16] Oh God. Tatum [00:07:17] So that was just I mean that was the protocol they gave me. Lita [00:07:19] How do you, I know that you are the type, that walks around your house singing singing everywhere. Tatum [00:07:26] (Laughing) Yeah. Lita [00:07:26] How did you do that. Tatum [00:07:27] It was hard. I watched a lot of movies. Ron [00:07:31] Oh oh that's incredible. Jean [00:07:34] What my mom really though wants to know is if you had to eat a ton of ice cream Were you forced to do it. Was it prescribed. Tatum [00:07:42] It was not prescribed but it didn't hurt. (Laughing) Lita [00:07:47] Nothing. It never hurts. Would you say. Jean [00:07:50] It hurts the waistline. Lita [00:07:50] Yes. Would you say that now you're back to normal or have you noticed any deficits or maybe even improvements in your voice. Tatum [00:07:58] I wouldn't say I'm back to normal I'd say I'm better than I ever have been. Lita [00:08:03] OK. Jean [00:08:05] Awesome. Tatum [00:08:05] Definitely. Well I had it done right before going to college so I definitely seen improvements like working with the voice teacher at school and everything. I think my vocal ability I can I can do a lot more than I was even able to before I got this surgery. Jean [00:08:20] Has it extended your range. Tatum [00:08:21] Or a little bit yeah. But mostly just like the clarity of my voice it was less breathy raspy and just endurance wise like I could make it through a show and not feel like I had to sit down and not talk to anyone for like a day after. Jean [00:08:37] Oh OK. That's awesome. Tatum [00:08:38] Yeah. Ron [00:08:38] All right. I hate to be the one who had to ask this question but is it possible that additional nodules can come back in the future. Tatum [00:08:47] Yes. Actually if you get surgery to remove vocal nodules you actually have a higher percent chance of developing them again just because you have scar tissue and everything. But it's not a super high percentage especially if I've been going through speech therapy and everything. So if you learn how to properly take care of it then you should be fine to be healthy in the future. Lita [00:09:11] Is there anything that you and our listeners can do to keep their vocal folds and larynx healthy. Tatum [00:09:19] Yes. The larynx and the vocal cords need moisture. So it's so important to drink plenty of water. I mean I carried around a half gallon jug. So I mean the typical recommendation is to drink six to eight glasses of water a day. But, I'd say some days I have more than that some days less. You know some days you forget. But and whenever possible to avoid alcohol and extremely spicy foods and smoking. In addition using a humidifier to maintain about 30 percent humidity in the room is also very helpful. Jean [00:09:52] OK and have they treated you for your acid reflux. Tatum [00:09:54] No that was just something I had it more when I was younger. Jean: OK. And they've think that kind of just set it up. These are not good. Yeah. Lita [00:10:03] All right. Jean [00:10:04] Yeah. Thank you. Tatum. Tatum [00:10:05] Thank you for having me. Lita [00:10:06] I am going to be watching for you on Broadway. Tatum [00:10:10] (Laughter) I hope so. Lights, Camera, Podcast! This episode of How Was Your Week is mostly about movies. Take your seats and pop your corn! First up, KURT LODER (MTV, Reason.com) is here to share a list of his favorite films that nobody else has really seen, including The Saddest Music in the World, The Midnight Meat Train, and The Fountain. You may know Kurt from MTV, but his film criticism is top-notch. Buy his book, The Good, the Bad and the Godawful: 21st Century Movie Reviews, here! Then, NATHAN RABIN (My Year of Flops, The AV Club) joins Julie to talk in depth about two terrible Beatles movies: Paul McCartney's Give My Regards to Broad Street and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, starring The Bee Gees. An important conversation about how great the Beatles are and how insane these movies turned out to be, mostly for reasons having to do with folly, hubris, and Tracy Ullman. Also: A treatise on Crispin Glover and fresh-pressed vegetable juice! A jazz musician's cat-related toilet project! Fiona Apple's long sweater and Francis Ford Coppola's nipples! Fancy chickens and why you shouldn't fight with theater ushers! And a hunch that Soon-Yi Previn watched the last season of Entourage. Plus: A call for redheaded ladies coming to the June 27th How Was Your Week Live who want makeovers, Colin Firth naked, what Paul McCartney's movie self dreams about, what Kurt Loder does and doesn't like about Quentin Tarantino, and when to listen to the White Album. Enjoy this!
