In this episode of CASAT Conversations, we are honored to welcome Dr. Steven C. Hayes, a pioneering clinical psychologist and the originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). With decades of groundbreaking work that has transformed the field of psychotherapy, Dr. Hayes brings a deep understanding of how we build resilience, move through suffering, and live with purpose.Drawing from tribal traditions, spiritual wisdom, and cutting-edge behavioral science, Dr. Hayes shares how ACT helps people willingly take on their own history, turn toward their pain, and connect with what matters most. He reflects on pivotal moments in his career—including his TEDx Talk, Turning Pain into Purpose—and emphasizes the importance of developing mental flexibility in a post-COVID world where "5 out of 5 of us" need resilience.Dr. Hayes also critiques the systemic challenges facing the mental health field today, including the limitations of the DSM, the influence of pharmaceutical companies, and the reduction of individuals to data points in normative science. With humility and fierce compassion, he calls for a culture shift in psychotherapy—one where practitioners are empowered to trust their intuition, meet clients with curiosity, and reject categorical thinking in favor of wholeness and integration. In this episode, Dr. Hayes discusses:The role of acceptance in healing and transformationACT's connection to tribal traditions and human resilienceHow personal pain can become a path to purposeHis critique of the current mental health system and the DSMThe power of integrating all parts of ourselvesA vision for bottom-up change in psychotherapy through practitioner wisdomJoin us for a compelling and candid conversation about how we can reimagine mental health care—from the inside out—and reconnect with the core of what makes us human.Key words: acceptance and commitment therapy, ACT therapy, resilience, mental health, healing, wisdomResources: TEDTalk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o79_gmO5ppgInstitute for Better health: https://www.ibh.com/Books by Steven C. Through stories from recent New Warrior Training weekends, they explore what real accountability looks like when you're no longer the rookie — but still far from finished. This is not a conversation about perfection. It's about presence. About dropping the mask. About recognizing the impulse to power through and instead choosing to pause, get honest, and grow.

In this episode of the Nonprofit Exchange, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Long, the president and master coach of Own Up, about her book, Accountability Without the Drama. Jennifer brings a wealth of experience in corporate training, executive coaching, and team development, stemming from her family's long-standing commitment to people development since the late 80s. We delved into the concept of accountability, which many perceive as punitive. Jennifer emphasized that true accountability should be viewed as a practice centered around clarity and growth rather than blame. She shared her insights on how effective communication and the art of dialogue are essential for fostering better relationships and enhancing leadership effectiveness. Jennifer introduced her six-step SOS model for accountability conversations, which includes identifying issues, analyzing context, and engaging in meaningful dialogue. We discussed the importance of creating space for team members to take ownership of their actions and decisions, rather than micromanaging or rescuing them. Throughout our conversation, we highlighted the significance of clear expectations and the impact of anxiety on accountability. Jennifer's approach encourages leaders to shift their mindset and focus on building trust and collaboration within their teams. Listeners can find more resources on Jennifer's website, accountabilityatwork.com, where they can also access a free chapter of her book. This episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone looking to improve their leadership skills and create a more positive organizational culture. Own Up To It In this episode of Do The Work | Mindset Mastery…   I reflect on the challenges and growth that come with self-awareness, especially as a father, husband, and businessman. As the year draws to a close, I share how self-development has played a central role in transforming my relationships and leadership. The Power of Deposits I talked about the Prime 3—a daily system I follow to make deposits into health, purpose, and profits. While all three are vital, the purpose deposit stands out as the one that has shaped my relationships and leadership the most. It's a practice that encourages me to see myself fully, not just as a businessman, but as a father and husband striving to grow.   But growth isn't without its setbacks. I opened up about how dysfunctional behaviors, like impatience and quick outbursts, have caused tension at home and work. However, I've learned to catch these moments faster, take responsibility, and work through them. The journey hasn't been easy, but it's been transformative. A Hard-Learned Lesson I shared a recent moment with my youngest daughter, Madeline, where I let frustration get the best of me. During a family dinner celebrating my eldest daughter's upcoming study abroad in Barcelona, I mishandled a situation involving Madeline and her phone. Instead of communicating calmly, I grabbed her phone and created unnecessary tension.   Reflecting on this, I used Byron Katie's four-question framework from her book Loving What Is: Is it true?   Can you absolutely know that it's true?   How do you react when you believe that thought?   Who would you be without that thought?   This process helped me see that my reaction stemmed not from my daughter's behavior but from my unspoken expectations and unresolved frustrations. By owning my actions and apologizing genuinely, I rebuilt trust and repaired the moment. Applying the Lesson I encourage you to examine your own reactions and assumptions. Whether in your personal life or business, miscommunication and unspoken expectations can create unnecessary problems. By taking responsibility for our actions and processing our thoughts, we can strengthen relationships and create a better environment for those around us. Key Takeaways Growth is a daily commitment—don't shy away from self-reflection.   Address issues head-on instead of letting them linger.   Own your mistakes and apologize with sincerity.   Effective communication starts with setting clear expectations.   Trust is built through consistent actions, not overcompensation. Reader Engagement Questions What unspoken expectations might be causing tension in your relationships?   How do you typically react to frustration, and how could you handle it better?   Have you ever mistaken someone's actions for disrespect when they weren't?   What's one step you can take today to strengthen a relationship in your life?   How can you use self-reflection to grow as a parent, partner, or leader? Notable Quotes “I don't let the small things take me over the top anymore.”   “Without purpose deposits, I wouldn't be the success I am today.”   “It's never too late to own your mistakes and rebuild trust.”   “Miscommunication and unspoken expectations are often the real problem.”   “We completely own the environment we're in—we can make or break it.”   Follow A.Z. Jen and Sandi are joined on this episode by Dr. Todd Conklin, author of Pre-Accident Investigations: An Introduction to Organizational Safety  as well as host of his organizational safety podcast of the same name. From his website:      "Todd Conklin spent 25 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Senior Advisor for Organizational and Safety Culture.  Los Alamos National Laboratory is one of the world's foremost research and development laboratories; Dr. Conklin has been working on the Human Performance program for the last 15 years of his 25-year career.  It is in this fortunate position where he enjoys the best of both the academic world and the world of safety in practice.          Conklin holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of New Mexico.  He speaks all over the world to executives, groups and work teams who are interested in better understanding the relationship between the workers in the field and the organization's systems, processes, and programs.  He has brought these systems to major corporations around the world.  Conklin practices these ideas not only in his own workplace, but also in the event investigations at other workplaces around the world.  Conklin's best selling book, Pre-Accident Investigations: An introduction to Organizational Safety is a best selling book on safety.  Conklin has several other books and a huge podcast following for his twice-weekly podcast of the same name.  Conklin defines safety at his workplace like this:  'Safety is the ability for workers to be able to do work in a varying and unpredictable world.'" Listen along as they talk about the 5 HOP principles mentioned in Dr.Conklin's book and how leadership mindsets can flourish within those principles, what simply having confidence can do for you, "why?" versus "how?" and what kind of leader flocks to each question, and more! Thank you so much for joining us on this episode, Dr. Conklin! You can find all of Dr. Conklin's books and his podcast on his page on HOP Hub here. Ever had one of those weeks when things just go from bad to worse? We all have, right – so we can appreciate how bad things got for KiwiRail this week. It was like watching an episode of Utopia or The Office as more details about the Aratere ferry grounding came to light. Then, to top it off, the Transport Minister refused to confirm or deny whether an advisory group has suggested KiwiRail no longer run the Cook Strait ferries. The Maritime Union says it looks that way. A couple of weeks ago, we spoke to the Duncan Roy, the General Manager of Interislander, after the ferry was successfully refloated. We celebrated the good news and the lack of damage to the ferry, but Roy was hesitant to comment on the Government pointing the finger very directly at the company for their standard of asset management. He diplomatically referred to a formal investigation. And you have to wonder if that's because Interislander knew what was up - that human error caused the ferry to slide onto the beach. At this stage, who knows why auto-pilot was turned on and then the 'execute' button pushed, but knowing that's what happened makes you think differently about the photos of the beached ferry. For all of us who weren't passengers or businesses directly impacted, it suddenly looks comical. Like, say, taking bolts out of a power tower and then watching it fall over. None of us are perfect – we are human. We all do silly things at times. For a while, I had a habit of driving off with a cup of tea on the roof of my car. My children gave me a plastic keep cup. But some mistakes have a greater impact than others. So I'm not surprised the question has been asked whether KiwiRail should continue running the ferries. But if not them, who? And how are we going to deal with the replacement of the ferries and landside infrastructure? A big picture plan needs to be in place before we start making other changes – like creating a new entity to run the ferries. It's clearly a complex business with specific challenges – and maybe those who know it best should hold the reins a little longer, until we know where the business is heading. The Government received a report from the Independent Ferry Advisory Group a few weeks ago. Decisions are yet to be made about the recommendations it contains, and once that's done it will have to go to Cabinet. It may take be some time, but the Government scrapped the previous plan so the onus is on them to get moving. In the meantime, I suggest Interislander just step up, own up, and do themselves a favour - move on from the grounding. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode of Power House, we are bringing you a fantastic conversation with Mike Tassone, COO and co-founder of Own Up. Own Up is a concierge mortgage marketplace that allows consumers to access customized data and a network of vetted lenders. Prior to his current role, Mike co-led the residential lending business for Leader Bank, which he helped grow to a top 40 lender in the US during his tenure. During their conversation, Clayton and Mike talk about the mortgage lender growth strategies, tactics to recruit high-quality loan originators, and the pros and cons of being maniacal Fed-watchers. They also discuss the pricing ecosystem in the mortgage industry and how the NAR settlement may impact mortgage lead gen and the order-of-operations of the homebuying and financing journey. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: The recent Fed meeting had no surprises and the market responded favorably to the expected rate cuts. Own Up was founded to solve the frustration of mortgage shopping and provide a better consumer experience. Recruiting high-quality loan originators and focusing on their strengths contributed to the growth of Leader Bank. The lead generation market has shifted from refinance to purchase, and lenders have had to adapt to the changing landscape. The future of real estate agents and loan officers depends on their ability to prioritize their time and provide value to consumers. In 2005, he faced an investigation by federal authorities and was subsequently charged with multiple counts of trafficking minors for sex. However, he managed to secure a plea deal in 2008, pleading guilty to a lesser charge of solicitation of prostitution and serving only 13 months in a county jail, while being allowed to leave for work during the day.Despite his criminal conviction, Epstein continued to maintain a high-profile social circle, including numerous politicians, businessmen, and celebrities. He cultivated friendships with influential figures such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton, current U.S. President Donald Trump, Prince Andrew, and other prominent individuals. In July 2019, Epstein was arrested again on federal sex trafficking charges, this time in New York. However, before he could stand trial, he was found dead in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan in what was officially ruled as suicide by hanging. His death sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding it.Epstein's case drew significant attention due to the scale of his alleged crimes and the high-profile nature of his connections. It also led to investigations into his trafficking operation, which allegedly involved a vast network of underage girls who were exploited for sex. The case highlighted broader issues related to sex trafficking and the abuse of power, as well as flaws within the criminal justice system that allowed Epstein to evade more severe consequences for his actions.Since his death, investigations have continued into his associates and enablers, and efforts have been made to bring justice to the victims of his abuse.
